WoW!!!   That's fantastic!!   I don't know what they use for shipping?   Did you use the express post envelope?   Maybe through Australia Post?   AhhhH!!   You will probably have it by Friday!

When you pay online for the MRV (visa fee) at US travel docs, the fee includes the Toll priority post bag! You only need to purchase the 3kg Aust post satchel to bring to the interview if you pay through Aust post.  :)

I am eagerly awaiting Toll to email or call me with the tracking number! ahhhhh

Yea, we will wait till he actually has the visa then book the flight!   Hopefully early Sept.  Eeeppp!

Side note:   I just finished printing off skype logs- holy cow that was crazy!  And I just did about 2-3 per month.   68 pages.  lol

Exciting! I think you won't need them at all but you're smart being prepared!  :joy:

I just got an email from the U.S. Consulate saying my visa has been issued and mailed!  :o that was FAST!
I checked my CEAC status too, says issued!!!! I dunno how to track the post though cos i payed through US travel docs and there's nowhere on my profile when i'm logged in that has a tracking number. Does anyone know if they use DHL?

Australia and New ZealandHow is everyone feeling about the interviews on Tuesday?

It was so easy and I was nervous for nothing! My interview was scheduled for 10am, and I arrived about 9.45am, security was fine although I had to take the gold belt off my dress haha
When I got to level 59 the lady asked for my passport and buzzed me in, had to pull open that big heavy door!
I took a number and when it got called about 10 minutes later I handed in my paperwork in the order they asked for it, sat back down and got called up again 10 minutes later for my fingerprints. I watched others taking their interviews, saw a few people be told they'll need to provide a co-sponsor before their visa would be issued,
Then my number was called again to window 2! I Took the oath looking the CO in the eye, he asked when i met my fiance, I told him the story and he laughed, and we joked a bit about my lack of criminal record then he handed me my slip that says I've been approved! The only questions he asked was when we had met, how long I had been in the U.S. (no overstays), what I do for a living, what he does for a living, and would I take his last name! DONE!  :joy:

Hi gang!
Our interview is tomorrow at 9:30am. Turns out I have to work tonight so I'll be travelling from Wollongong in to the city beforehand! Parking is ridiculously expensive around Martin Place.
We are all ready, my fiancee will be with me. Are people bringing couples photos? It says nothing on the checklist?

Hi there! My interview is at 10am.
I'm bringing the check list items in one plastic folder envelope, and an envelope with my evidence of a relationship such as letters, phone calls, bank transfers, and couples photos. They don't ask for this on the check list but they may ask to see some at the interview which is unlikely because Sydney is a low fraud consulate.

You'll be fine. She doesn't need to be there; I wasn't there for my husband (then fiancé), and they didn't even blink. It's apparently not common for petitioners to be there, given the brutal plane flight and all.  ;)

Which photos? Proof of relationship? A4 is fine (well, it was for us-ours were a mix). Anything passport-photo-y needs to be gloss.

You can arrive early, but they may not let you in. (Might say come back later.) If you look in my timeline, you should be able to find my now-husband's review of the entire experience (including the "will they even let him?" since we brilliantly missed that whole "need to confirm interview appointment" thing in the rush of the Christmas holidays), what to expect, questions they ask, and so on.  :)

Also, per my husband, if you like coffee, drink LOTS of it before leaving, because unless you're in a city with an Aussie barista, you're gonna miss Aussie coffee fast. DOWN THE FLAT WHITES LIKE MAD.

I was referring to the couples photos on A4  Already got my passport photos in gloss!

I read the review, very helpful!

What's this confirming the interview appointment?! My interview email didn't say to reply with confirmation of the date;
"Please reply to this email within 5 business days if you are unable to attend your appointment and you would like to ?reschedule? or ?cancel?.Please include your name and date of birth in the response."

I've already started guzzling flat whites!  :content:

Quick question! I was extremely busy this weekend and Didn't get to print out my photos on gloss photo paper, would it be a big deal to print them on an A4 normal paper?!

Also, do they allow you to arrive more than 30 minutes before the interview?

Slightly nervous, but very excited! I have all of my paperwork ready to go, but I want to go over it one last time on Monday just to be sure!

I live in Sydney so it's easy for me to get to the consulate, but regardless I'll get there early so I can get a coffee beforehand  :)

Australia and New ZealandNext exciting topic: THE WEDDING...

im havign a small vegas wedding in 2 weeks and next year a giant one where all my best friends and parents from australia will (hopefully) be coming over

its a bit cheaper reception wise to have it in the USA as well.  Personally I wish i could have the bigger wedding in Australia since we are having the first initial one in the USA but alas its a bigger deal for his family and extended family to attend and have a reception so hence next yr after it can be planned properly we will do a church and reception in his hometown.

Im trying to keep this inital vegas wedding as low key.  for SSN and AOS and EAD reasons i will be changing my surname now, but for all other intensive purposes i will still want to be refered to by my maiden name and live in a bubble of "im still engaged - not married" until the big deal next yr.

Ofcourse my friends. his friends will understand that its beyond our control havign to get married within 90 days but that doesnt mean u dont get to have a wedding because of it whether its this yr or next yr!!!

I'm glad i'm not the only one! I am tossing around changing my name on social media now or later, i think we're leaning towards not telling acquaintances that we're married yet. I got my ceremony dress for September :D getting very excited, only 3 weeks til I leave!

For the 'big' wedding, were you planning on redoing the ceremony and reception, or just the reception?

We had a ceremony with a judge and only Josh's parents and younger brother (and his wife and two kids) in attendance. We are having our reception in August, and the invitations were worded to let people know that it would just be the reception and that the ceremony had already taken place. We then plan to have a second party (aka reception) next year back home in Australia.

Just saw your reply! Yes we are re-doing the ceremony due to all of both our families being unable to attend in September this year, my mum is sick and I want her to see me get married. I know that might seem strange to do the whole thing again but we really want a big wedding to share with our loved ones.

Hello everyone!

This will be an odd question. My lovely fiance and I are getting married by his father who is a minister, on September 7th 2014.
We're having a small ceremony with just immediate family. I'll be changing my last name to his last name straight away
We're having a big wedding next year in July 2015 when we can afford it. After some feedback from some friends, we were unpleasantly surprised by a friend saying whats the point on the big wedding? For us, we want to share a big day with everyone but we were limited on time to arrange such a festivity so soon.

My question is this; For those of you having a small ceremony now, and a big wedding later, did you announce it to the world you were married already prior to the big wedding? or anything such as changing your last name on social media, emails etc?  :huh2:

Ok, so who knows how I book in for a court house wedding? Do I need any other legal certs, etc or do I just book, show up and BAM, married?? Lol.
And... what is everyone else doing?

My arrival is August 20th, We're heading to the court house to apply for the marriage certificate with our photo I.D's and picking up the licence 3 days later as that's the wait time in Pennsylvania, we're getting married by a waterfall September 7th and his Dad is the minister!

I don't think it is strange at all to 're-do' the ceremony, especially since your mother is not well and you would like to be able to share that occasion with her. In fact, I think a lot of couples with a partner arriving on a K-1 would do something similar by having a legal marriage first to satisfy the visa requirements and holding a more formal ceremony and reception at a later date.

Ok, so who knows how I book in for a court house wedding? Do I need any other legal certs, etc or do I just book, show up and BAM, married?? Lol.
And... what is everyone else doing?

The first step will be applying for a marriage license from within the state you will be getting married in. These are usually issued from your local county administration office (search for registrar or recorders office in your county). There is often a waiting period from when you apply for your license to when you can actually get married (usually a few days). You will require photo ID (passport is the best option), and in some states a witness.

The second step is finding out what the arrangements are for the specific court house you wish to get married at. Some will allow you to book a time, others will have set days or times where you show up and you get the first available judge. In some cases there is a risk that you can show up and no one will have time available on that day. Some judges will make themselves available to do out of hours marriages (for a fee).

If you are going to be in LA County, this page should be a good starting point: http://www.lavote.ne...k/marriages.cfm

*grin* I've learned to never make assumptions here at VJ.

Yeah, our interview wording was a bit different. My guess is because we got the notice at the holidays/Aussie summer, so they wanted to have confirmation that he would be there rather than have him contact if he needed to reschedule. Which would have been fine and all, but it was the holidays so he didn't actually open the attachment to his interview email until about a week before the interview itself-about 5 weeks after the deadline to confirm. (Yes, I did almost kill him. From here.) Needless to say, it was a tense week and change.

Australia and New ZealandShipping NZ - USA

Anyone know any good shipping companies to go with?

It does matter what you are going to be sending along. I had about 5 boxes of things I was not about to part with, and was not bringing any furniture or electronics. In the end, I went to the PostShop, and mailed myself the boxes, to my new address in the states. They told me it would take 6-8 weeks, but before 3 weeks had passed they'd all been delievered, and were fine. I think it was in the neighbourhood of 350$ to send the lot.

Australia and New Zealandchanging name after married

Howdy! Just wondering if you changed your name after you got married? We are both planning on changing our name so we will hyphen both our surnames. Can you apply to Births deaths and marriages from the USA or is the process a bit hard? Also, because our marriage wont be recognized in Australia will it be an issue? (same sex)
Thanks guys!

I was able to change my name through the Victorian BD&M from within the US, and also got a new passport from within the US. The process was a little tedious but it kept me occupied while waiting for my green card. I have been meaning to write about the process but keep forgetting. What state were you born in? I don't think it will be an issue in Australia.

Australia and New Zealandwhat did you take to the interview for evidence?

More than likely you will not need any evidence at all. I've yet to see any K-1 applicant here asked for evidence at the interview in Sydney. But just in case, you should take a sample of evidence you feel proves the legitimacy of your relationship. Photos, proof of vacations together, proof of common address, common bank accounts etc are solid. Good luck, you'll be fine. Sydney is one of the easiest consulates.

Australia and New Zealandmedical and the flu...

Could be an issue.  It is a serious transmittable disease.  Best bet is to bring all records from your doctor to the medical along with the bottles of whatever the doctor is prescribing.  Hopefully the exam doctor will see that it is being properly treated and will let you slide.

I had bronchitis last winter, and it really sucks.

Australia and New ZealandMelbourne Visa Medical Review.

One of the things the doctor needs to do is to assure the embassy that the person presented for the medical is the same person who applied for the visa.  I guess that is why they are so specific about the tattoos.

The doctor was smart to get a female assistant in the room before touching a female patient.  This practice protects both good patients from bad doctors and good doctors from bad patients.

I am glad it all went well.  Don't worry about what he did not examine, as that is the embassy's problem and not yours.  If the doctor passes you, then you are done no matter what he may have missed.

Australia and New ZealandApproved at Interview but still no visa - any advice?

Hi There,

This website has been such a great help through my own IR1 visa journey, that I haven't had to create an account and post anything until now.

On the 20th of May I attended my interview at the Sydney Embassy. I was told that my visa was approved and given a slip of paper that "Congratulations, your visa is approved/. You should receive your visa within...." (I'm sure those of you who have been through this know what I'm referring to.)

I was over the moon. I went back home to QLD, handed in my notice at my work and residence, and waited eagerly for my passport to arrive. After 5 days, I had no word, so I checked the CEAC website and saw my status was still showing at "READY"  (for interview). I sent off an email to the SydneyIV email address and received a pretty generic response back to wait. At day #11 the status on the CEAC website changed to "Administrative Processing".

Another email to CEAC and I finally received a response on Friday 20th June that my visa had never been under administrative processing and was with a visa official for processing and adjudication. On the same day the status on the CEAC website changed back to "READY" (for interview".

Does anyone know what this means, how many more months I am likely to wait and why this has happened. I would have thought that if I was missing paperwork that they would have asked for something but in over a month I've received no word at all requesting anything additional.

Emotionally I'm pretty much at the end of my ability to cope with all of this, being here on my own with my husband overseas. I'm hanging in limbo over a visa process that I started back in February 2013, and this I just can't find any mention of this happening to anyone else. Any advice or information if you've gone through a similar experience would really be appreciated.

TabithaM, I am very shocked to hear of this.  The Sydney Consulate has always been thought of as one of the easiest and most efficient.

It almost sounds like your file got placed at the bottom of a pile on someone's desk, or that your Case Officer had a medical emergency and somehow you slipped through the cracks.  I've never heard of anyone who got the "Visa Approved" slip of paper (from Australia) going back until Administrative Processing.

I'm really sorry this has happened. If you cannot think of any reason that your visa would have been placed on hold, I'd be writing them every day.  I know there is no longer a phone number for customer service for Immigrant Visas, unfortunately.

Best of luck - please let us know if things clear up!

Australia and New ZealandTo the Same sex coupes....

Thanks guys! I guess it doesnt matter, we were just curious! Were hoping to be pregnant in the next few months so just trying to figure out all the legalities of everything before it happens... so many different laws! As long as we are birth married and on the birth cert I guess we will be ok! Australia seems easier than the states for that though...

Totally unrelated... Congrats on your interview and approval! Did they ask any questions about your wife being in Aus with you for all this time? Did she come to the interview and sit with you? Im not sure if I shoukd bring De or not?

Lilsadie, I'm the USC, actually.  I tried to let Julie answer the questions, but I was standing beside her at the interview window.  The guy interviewing us "played along" when we were kind of joking.  That made it easier.

I used to live in Hong Kong, and I flew to Australia on business all the time - on a B1 visa.  Since we are both retired, the "all this time" didn't come up.  I have my Australian Permanent Residency (through de facto) - so I'm legal here.

Our attorney told us that the Consulates like to have the partner along - it shows legitimacy of the relationship.  I think you should go for it!

Just remember that you have to have WRITTEN permission for the US citizen to come.  When you get your interview letter, it will have a link to the Consulate - and you'll see the email address you write to for permission (depending on your type of visa).  It took them over a week to answer our email though - so plan ahead, and carry a copy of the email letter with you on the day.

Australia and New ZealandTo the Same sex coupes....

Hello! My partner and I were talking about this last night and we are a little confused... (This could be a stupid question)
When we get married in the USA are we legally married in all countries that have marriage equality?
I know when we come home to Aus for visits we won't be but if we went to the UK or NZ are we?

This whole thing is a bit confusing!!!

It depends on the country. You will need to double-check with each country's rules.

Australia and New ZealandHow did you organize your paper work?

Hi guys, I'm sure this has been asked a million times but I cant find anything specific. Those of you who have had their interview how did you take the paper work to the interview?
I have:
Medical
Finger print/police check
Identifying docs (passport, birth cert, etc)
Copy of our initial application
Co sponsor documents
Copy of the DS thingy
Letter of intent from both of us
Way more evidence than we need

Am I missing anything and how do I arrange it?
I had it all in plastic pockets in a binder but iveseen thats a no no...?
Thanks guys,, its all getting very close and real now!!!

Lilsadie,

We had plastic see-through folders. Security did not blink.   We were an IR-1/CR-1 - so the list might be slightly different.

Folder #1 - no sleeves - just loose in the folder

Julie (beneficiary) had the following in her folder - as we anticipated we might need (but did not need) these things at security:

Copy of email authorizing me (petitioner) to attend the interview with her.

Copy of Interview Letter

Copy of the DS-260 receipt

Passport pictures

Medical Envelope

(Her police report was sent directly to the Consulate since she is from Queensland)

3kg Express Post Envelope

PLUS:  2013 Tax Transcript and updated I-864 (Sponsor form)

Folder #3 (plastic sleeves for each thing)

Bonafide marriage evidence

What they looked at:

Passport pictures

Medical

Express Mail Envelope

That's it!!!  They did NOT take my 2013 tax transcript, even though I was told to bring it.

They didn't fuss about anything.  But here is a hint...if your medical report is on a CD-rom - be sure to tell security that is what's on the disk.  Someone who interviewed at the same time as us had to return down to Security because they didn't let him take up the CD the first time.

Best of luck!

Australia and New ZealandInterview questions about U.S. visits

Hello everyone!

Anybody had any further questions regarding previous trips to usa prior to meeting your spouse?

I ask because my intervie at the Sydney U.S. consulate is in 12 days and I have visited the U.S. when I was 18 - 23 years old, 5 times over a 5 year period prior to meeting my fiancé because i was visiting friends there.

Any advice or feedback?

Sweetswinks,

We were asked how we met, and my spouse was asked some questions about her medical exam (we're nearly 60, and she has high blood pressure and a metal device closing up a hole in her heart).

That's all we were asked.  Period.  We were not asked any specifics about her travel to the US.  She's traveled to the US about 6 times on the Visa Waiver Program in the last 5 years.

It was the easiest interview we've ever had!!!
