United KingdomUK Driving licence
If your renting a car at the airport I would just use the US licence, don't think you need IDP to do that, another plus is if you happen to get caught by one of the speed cameras your UK licence will not get penalty points added

Just to clarify, you have to have held the US Licence for at least a year before you can rent a vehicle. I tried in November to use my USL but as I hadn't had it long it was not accepted and if it was it was for an extortionate amount. (Didn't bother renting a car in the end as my UKL with Points would of cost a fortune too lol. Lucky me I was chauffeured around for 2 weeks)

All I did was amend my address on my DL, it is currently back at my mum's addy. If ever we go back and live in the UK then I will amend the name, but until that time it will always stay in my maiden name, plus in about a year and a half I can get my points wiped off lol.

I used to watch that ####### after I got home from the pub, no wonder they had it on late at night. It was certainly amusing and funny to watch.

I will have to have a look at netflix and check out what UK stuff they have, sounds cool.

United KingdomMedical and Packet 4 type stuff
I got my shots done after the medical, went to GP's and got polio/tetanus and MMR, also asked them if they could write a letter confirming that I had had the shots etc, luckily it didn't cost a thing.

Make sure you keep the letter so that you can send a copy of it with your AOS application, this will save getting an RFE etc.

Good luck at the medical.

United KingdomGoing to an English BBQ, recipe ideas and can we get golden syrup in the grocery store?
You can buy Golden Syrup (Tate & Lyle) at World Market, you can also purchase Heinz BB's there too (not cheap).

I use Kroger's Vegetarian Beans with tomato sauce, taste as good as Heinz beanz and you get 5 cans for $2.00.

For a fancy Baked Bean feast at a barbie I make my own Barbeque beans which taste much better than any other bbq'd beans I have tasted (IMO) lol.

Try this:-

2 Cans of Baked Beans
1 onion (not sweet onion)
1 red pepper
1 green pepper
1 can chopped tomatoes (diced tomatoes)
Paprika
Chilli Powder

chop onions, peppers and fry in pan on stove until soft, add tomatoes and beans mix and simmer until peppers and onions soft (unless you like hard peppers etc) then add a sprinkle or paprika and chilli powder. Stir and simmer

Add more paprika and chilli powder if you like it hotter etc.

United KingdomHow long for new UK passport after marriage?
This may seem a silly question, but on the Passport form, at the end you have to get 2 photo's (or the form) countersigned by a UK Citizen, what happens if you don't know of anyone who is a UK Citizen?

I will need to renew mine in 2009 so I am not worrying too much about it at this stage, but was just wondering what everyone else did etc.

Thanks

United KingdomVaccination at my NHS Doctors?
I had my vaccinations done at my local GP's office after my medical. (Much cheaper)

The medical listed all the vaccinations that I needed, I then took the form with me to the Doc's and got the relevant vaccinations. Ask the nurse if they can give you a letter of all the vaccinations that you have had for proof.

I have had no problems, when I filed for AOS, I just sent the vaccination worksheet and a copy of my Doctors letter with all my other paperwork.

Good luck, hope that helped.

I like to use this website for cooking, then convert some items to the american equivalencies etc.

I know that golden raisins are the equivalent of sultanas (not as nice as sultanas mind).

caster sugar = Superfine Sugar (well hard to find, but found in a local Harris Teeter, Dominoes? brand does carry it in certain locations)

I make the best roast beef and roasties (I personally think Russets Idaho? are best for roasties) with the help of bisto powder for the gravy.

A good beef joint that I would recomend is "a Sirloin roast joint" (usually costs around $11-$18 for good joint)

I wasn't stating that she is not British, just stating that she has German Bloodlines.

I haven't made a comment about the entry onto UK soil, as far as I am concerned that is up to the Customs and Immigration people. Just wish they would refuse more ILLEGALS lol.

Actually the Queen is originally from German Bloodlines.

Before the 1st or 2nd WW, the Queens family name was Saxa-Coeburg (sp?), but because of the Wars with the Germans was changed to Windsor.

United KingdomVisa arrived BUT...............................
Just a quick note about the x-rays.

I had to do a health exam for my job, I had a tb shot, which came out positive (but inactive TB) so I can never have another TB test in my life again. So I had to get x-rayed again (which showed lungs being clear) but I did give them my previous x-ray that I had done at the medical to compare and make sure everything was still ok, and nothing had developed over that period of time.

Always handy to keep it, you never know when you may need it.

Apart from that, it is basically a waste of hand luggage space lol.

Also try

they sell a cool selection of stuff, price wise it's just a little under what I can buy stuff in the shops, but then you have added shipping, but heck whats a few extra pence. (They even sell the plastic bottles of HP.)

I am very into the Chip shop style curry sauce too, goes great with my steak chips swarmed in vinegar. lol.

I still use my maiden name in my passport. It doesn't expire until 2009. I always keep a copy of my marriage certificate with me, when I am checking in as obviously name on GC doesn't match passport. Never had any trouble going through POE.

Also make sure the plane tickets always match the passport name.

I can do without the cheese...I have gained over a stone since moving to the UK because I love the cheese so much. I have found the cheese that Glyn and I eat most here over there in the States, its a crumbly cheshire cheese but its expensive.
Glyn and I are hoping to open a Breakfast place where you can get a REAL FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST. We are most concerned with finding some good sausage so we may end up having to make them ourselves.

Try this site...

I personally have not used them, but our Director at work has (his mum is a brit) so they get an awful lot of brit meat from there. It would probably be cheaper if you bought the meat wholesale etc but if you do decide to open up a B&B then maybe try them out.

Try out Kroger's Vegetarian Beans in Tomato sauce. This is the only place I can find beans without any other ####### in it like pork and brown sugar stuff.

They are literally the same as Heinz, much nicer than Bush's and around 40c a can. Kroger do also have an International section (they sell Heinz as do World Market and online places but charge nearly $2.00 a can).

United KingdomTransferring money (cross-posted to the new life in America sub forum)
What I did when I transferred a large amount was to send a fax to my local Lloyds TSB and ask them to transfer X amount over to my account here using the US routing numbers and swift number etc (can't remember exactly what they are called). I was charged 15 quid in the UK and then taxed appropriately by the US bank.

Had no problems either end with it, although Lloyds did ring me to make sure I was aware of the fax that they had received.

United KingdomVisiting UK with baby, but both have dif. p/ports and names
OK so I have a few questions to pose to you all, hoping you can help me out with your experience etc.

I am heading back to the UK in December to visit family and friends with my baby (celebrating her 1st b'day and xmas in the UK, Hubby not coming with us).

Will I need to get a letter from her dad before we leave (she has US p/port, I have UK and in my maiden name p/port) or can we just go and no questions asked etc.

I don't want her or myself to be refused to leave the US or enter the UK etc.

also...

She has my married name (my passport expires next year, so will change it to married name next year saves time and money that way lol).

I will be getting her a UK p/port but need to save up the money for hers and mines p/port.

Another question...What if I was to get her UK p/port before we go, although she would still have a different surname (I can provide my marriage cert. etc) use the UK p/port to leave US and the US p/port to re-enter, would that work?

Sorry for the complete mess of these questions but I am trying to think of all solutions to taking my girl to the UK without "others" thinking I have kidnapped her lol.

Thanks

United KingdomA few general questions
Some answers I do not know, but will try and help you out.

1. It takes about 40 days to get the Police cert. in. I got mine in about 8 months before the interview date... all was ok.
2. You need to go to the town (in which you where born) and visit the Births, deaths and Marriages office, will take 30 mins or so to get a certified true copy for a small fee, or you may be able to order a copy online.
3. I got the Docs surgery to print out a letter stating what vaccines I had had (got relevant shots few weeks before medical)
4. Can't tell you about this, I have heard it is usually on separate days now.

Hope some of this helps you, I am basically telling you my experience. lol

Good luck and hope you don't wait too long for your interview/medical dates etc.

United KingdomUK citizenship for our kid
This site will be helpful...

http://ukinusa.fco.g...h-registration/

We registered our daughter with the Embassy just after she was born. She is a dual cit. but only holds US p/port at present due to lack of funds for a UK p/port.

Note also that it is best to register within the 3 month (I think) timeline or you will have to provide your hospital records instead of just the birth certificate.... and make sure you purchase a UK Birth Certificate. I think altogether registering her and getting a copy of the birth cert cost us around $250.

She will be a dual citizen once you register her whether she has a UK passport or not.

United KingdomBritish passport for my daughter
Going back to the op, once she leaves the US back to the UK obtaining that bc will be a whole lot harder. Since she had her daughter in May 09, she will have to get her medical records from the hospital that delivered her baby. Being out of the country will make it harder to obtain etc than being in person.

If the OP does not register the birth, then best thing is to, once back in the UK (or prior to leaving US) see what documents would be needed to register the "birth in a foreign country", this way she can be prepared in what will be needed document wise.

Also, Good Luck in that move back to the UK, I have been pondering moving back also, but the grass is green on both sides lol.

I am sorry for sounding like a broken record about the bc, but think about it, your Birth Certificate is the most important document you will ever need in life.
Jo1973FemaleEngland2010-01-25 10:06:00
United KingdomBritish passport for my daughter
Best route would be to register the birth and get the Birth Certificate, holding off getting the passport. (My daughter only has a US p/port but does have a British Birth Certificate as we registered her straight after birth etc.)

Once you have the b/c you can feel relaxed. She does not need a UKP/port to enter UK as she will have bc and US p/port. Once in UK then get a hold of a p/port (will be cheaper anyway).

Best point really is not to leave the US until you have that bc.

United KingdomBritish passport for my daughter
It might be wise for you to register the birth and get a copy of the birth certificate from the Consulate if you don't already have one. If you don't have a b/c this may very well cause problems years down the line trying to get a hold of one.

If you do register, it's best to get it done before 90 days after the birth, once after that time limit you have to provide all the hospital records information etc (something like that anyway).

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionQuick question - 10 year Green Card
Thanks for the info. I always wondered what happens after the 10 years.

With the I-90, there is no option for expiring GC etc, by the looks of it, you would need to file I-751 again. Or maybe I just missed that part lol.

But it certainly is interesting that if you only do the GC thing you will be in debt to USCIS forever lol. (Nice little earner for the USCIS) lol

BUt, if you naturalize then move back to say the UK, you forever pay the IRS? do'h no win situation.

When we moved we sent off both forms. We received a NOA for the "sponsors address change - I-865" (I am still a CPR)

Another quick question.

What happens if you send all your paperwork, receive your NOA then do not hear back for over a year etc? I know the NOA is like a receipt and you can still travel and work etc but what happens if it takes over a year? Will this have a direct affect on your job (if you are currently working), can your employer get rid of you?

I do not need to remove my conditions until mid next year, I am just starting to worry about everything already.

Life insurance
Car insurance
House Insurance
