United KingdomWedding Registries - did anyone use them for gifts for the wedding?

I loathe registries. I feel it kinda makes ppl feel obligated to buy gifts. Sounds pretty silly, I know...but if someone wants to buy us something, I wouldn't really care what it was & whatever they decided on would be fine for me. Registries take the suprise outta things for me.

I was against a registry as well. But honestly I had more people ask me about a registry then anything, which is why I decided to get one. My problem is when people called me or my mom to ask what Chris and I might need (and they did) I felt awkward in giving them an answer. By providing a registry I was able to direct them to it and not have to suggest what they buy.

What I didn't do was list it on my invites or shower invites. I felt if people were interested in what I might need or if I had a registry then they would call me. And then did. What worked out for me is that I didn't have to return anything or regift anything. Plus I had all the kitchen appliances etc. So I didn't want to replace what I already have.

But I do see where you are coming from Lisa..I was not a huge fan either. Gifts are from the heart...

Crate and Barrel and Bed Bath and Beyond also have the % off coupon. We found a lot of the stuff at Macy's they have at BBB for less.

Crate and Barrel is one of my favs!!
I considered Bed Bath and Beyond as well. But I didn't have very good luck with them customer service wise for another wedding registry I delt with. So just from personal experience I decided to skip em.

Hiya!

We registered at Macys. Got nearly everything we picked out! We were modest about it though. Macys was great, I had fantastic customer service with them. Even got 10% completion gift off everything we wanted to buy from our registry that wasn't purchased.

Most of my guests were from out of town so it made it easy for them. I live no where near a Macys and I did everything online.
Chris and I even went today to exchange a table cloth that was sent in the wrong size. Even that was easy. They gave us our discount and are having the item shipped with no added fees. Just singing the praises of Macys. Plus the prices were pretty good on most items. Sales change weekly.

We also registered locally at the Antique store we bought my engagement ring. Family friends but the did an amazing job.

Have fun!!

Oh..most of the UK family gave us money! So that even worked out OK

I woke up at 7am and noticed there was a missed call on my UK mobile. I called back -- it was Bruce calling from Dundee. And...

HE WAS AWARDED HIS PhD!!!! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

Oh my god, I think I have the vapours, this has been such a great 24 hours.

That is AWESOME!!!!! Congratulations Bruce!!!!! kicking.gif

BTW.... you do know that "the vapours" actually refers to passing wind, don't you? whistling.gif innocent.gif laughing.gif

KRIKIT -- FOR SHAME!!!

laughing.gif

In my family, the vapours were always a synonym for going into a faint. I have since recuperated and my bottom was never involved, thank you. smile.gif

Oh, and to make things even more awesome, my mom and I just booked a girls' holiday in the Bahamas for the first week in March. Now I'm back on the diet biggie style and starting to look for some beachwear...

Sending my good mojo out to you all... this has been a fantastic 24 hours! kicking.gif

Congrats to you both!! What a great success! I bet you are so proud!

I'm going over with around £9K and not much else. We do however through a friend of Nick's family have an appartment to live in rent free and although it is furnished we can gradually fill it with our stuff and aquire things we will need when we do get our own place. My parents have talked us into living in the appartment until mid 2009 then they have a couple of policies due to pay out and we will get around £15K then to maybe start hunting for our own place. We are very much starting at the bottom but at least we starting with something. I know it could be worse.

Doesn't sound like to bad of a deal to me! Good luck!

We are pretty lucky in our situation as well. Chris and I live in a house that my dad owns. We pay a very very minimum rent and I do all the paper work for their investment properties.

Our long term plan is to purchase my grandmothers house when she no longer needs it. So as long as we are patient we will have a fantastic house.
It also works for us because we have a few holiday rental cabins which Chris' mum and dad stay in for free when they visit.

Overstock.com might have Little Britian...I think I saw it recently!?

We got (from VJ) a region hack code so we could make all our DVD players region free! Love it.

I have one new dvd player that doesn't have a code yet and that is only because it is still new!
I have the website at home if anyone wants it I'll post it tonight. But I got it from some one here so maybe they'll post it.

If anyone is a hill walker, I bought my husband the 'Mountain' DVD for Christmas. We both love it.

United KingdomTo the Brits - do you think everything here in the US is too sweet?

Invest in a good knife as well...we love our bread maker, I got it as a gift several years ago, but cutting it for sandwiches or good toast was the problem! We have a chef friend who I was talking to about this and he gave us this amazing knife as a gift for our wedding..it has made all the difference.

The best thing to do is actually go to a shop together and test them out. One knife may work for one half but not the other. For example, Wusthofs are slightly lighter and have smaller handles, whereas Henckels have larger handles but with virtually the same blade as Wusthofs. It depends on hand size etc. I love Globals, but they're a ####### to sharpen as the blade is cut differently. We've been slowly growing our knife collection, and if you look after them they will last for life. Ebay have great bargains on the top ranges.

That was a geeks knife post.

agree with you. I've grown into a bit of a knife geek myself. I cook a lot and love all my specialty knifes...just never got a good bread knief. Yay for the chef friend again..it is a wusthof...

That's one thing I am SO going to miss. English bread.

I am going to have to invest in a bread maker.

I miss english bread...I miss english cheese....I just did something people will hate...Threw out about 4 packages of Bisto gravy stuff...it was out of date but most of it was never opened. I just don't like gravy that much! :( Got loads of HP sauce if anyone wants any!

Kroger's "vegetarian beans" are very close to the UK ones.

Those are exactly what we just bought this week, and he did say they were pretty good (he had them on toast for breakfast - BLECH!!!). He hated the Boston brand with the brown sugar and pork in them.

~Liza

Baked beans on toast - how can you not like - that's one of my all-time favorites - UK beans of course!? Or Fried egg, chips (fries) and baked beans....sausage, egg and beans - dip the sausage in the egg yolk and bean sauce...don't knock it until you've tried it!!

*grin* YUCKOOOOOOOO
But you are welcome to eat what ever you like...I'll cook it for you to. But no beans on toast for me...same goes with dipping anything in egg! (I am a no egg girl)

United KingdomWhat Won't You Miss About The UK?

I for one wont miss the crappy scottish weather...nothin but rain and fog, seldom have any kind of summer there. At least here in the states you can pretty much guarantee yer gonna have a hot summer.

I wont miss the coffee, i've got a taste for General Foods International coffee's...my favourite being *French Vanilla* yummy.

I do however miss my fairy liquid and DECENT gravy,,,AHHHH BISTO!! :crying:

salad cream is a reason for leaving the UK. That and marmite.

YAK....marmite.
Chris doesn't like it either...so it never has to be bought!!

I was looking at one of the british food stores online...they had marmite flavored crisps...yucko...but I'd never seen them before.

I ADORE ADORE ADORE Marmite. Food of the gods, it really is. Oh and I LOVE salad cream sarnies. Yum, Yum, Yum!

Chris said that having a salad sarnie with salad cream will be the only time he misses it.
Do you special order your salad cream Magsy??

I haven't had any since I got here. Luckily the USA is so salad dressing mad I don't really miss it too much. There's other stuff to choose from!

yeah I am really into the asian type dressings...You being the gardener type probably make great salads....the last year I started pan roasting pecans and adding them to my salad. Oh dear it is lovely

We bought a gorgeous ginger oriental dressing from Aldi the other week. Ended up going back and buying about another 4 bottles! Aldi tends to only have stuff for a little while...once it's gone it is gone!

yeah I tend to buy several bottles of my favorites...like this sweet chili sauce. It is yummy...but I buy 4 at a time in case they stop selling it.
The asian dressing me like is: Good Seasons Asian Sesame with Ginger....so if you can't find your stuff at Aldi try this!

I'm a salad cream disliker as well!

Salad Cream on hot boiled baby potatoes is a guilty pleasure of mine that I recently introduced to my wife (USC) and she loves it. Sorry but Salad Cream is not a valid thing to not like about the UK.

agreed to be disagreed about the salad cream. The Uk can have it....but I won't miss it! :)

and I totally have to agree with the whole instant coffee stuff LisaD. Not a fan.

I love a cup of coffee in the morning.
Can't get into having tea all day. I like tea...one cup is good for me...maybe two. But that is it.
Chris always seems refreshed by a cup of tea.
I like cold water to refresh me...so there is the other thing.

Lack of cold drinks...and once again. Ice. I like ice. But I always seem to miss it the most when I am in England.
Ya go to a cafe...have a lovely toasted and buttered crumpet (oh my gosh I love emm) and a diet coke with 1 peice of ice.

not enough ice for me!

First, does the number change on the passport?
Second, we are about to send our k-1 paperwork with the NEW I-129F included...
how do you go about transfering the visa into a new passport if we get the visa before it expires?

Does anyone have any information or advice about this?

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionI-134 question
Let me just mention I did read the FAQ's, I did do a search, only to get some weird threads, and I may have asked this before. But since I am looking at the form and filling it out as I sit here the question has re-appeared.

Question #11 on the I-134 asks if you intend/do not on making contributions to support..blah blah fiance...

It then says if you checked INTEND to make contributions state how much or in what form and for how long.

Now, it appears to me that if I check Do Not Intend, then I won't support him but if I check Intend, then what one earth do I write for contributions and money???

Does this make any sense? Please help if you know the answer. Many Many thanks in advance!
