PhilippinesHow did you filipina wife change after you married her and took her to your home country?

WeLL the answer then is simple... there is no answer. Everyone is different and it has NOTHING to do with ones wife being a Filipina  .

Just ask you question as fixx'd -

Well, assuming the OP sincerely wanted to know the answer to his original post, I can relate. When I first met Jena in a chat room in 2005 I didn't know anything about her or her home country. I searched any source I could find and started asking questions. I'll give the OP the benefit of the doubt here. I have nothing to lose by believing him other than a few minutes to answer his question.

How did your filipina wife change after you married her and took her to your home country?

How did the relationship change in a good or bad way? Did she act the same as when you meet her or did she change and the relationship became unpleasant.

How long did your marriage last?

Jena and I have been married for over 5 years now. How did she change after coming to the USA? Well, I'd say she's not quite as shy as she was when I met her and of course she's more mature.

Obviously it depends on the individual. What is your wife/fiances circumstances now? Does she live on her own or with her parents? This is just my opinion and I'm sure it's not shared by all but, during the visa process I helped Jena get her own place for a few months so she could get used to being independent before she moved here. I think it was less of a shock to her when she came to the US. When I had to go back to work she was used to being by herself.

PhilippinesOff topic for Philippines

Well, Filipinos make it a career as you know. They will seriously put out their hearts for it. Even Ms. Gay pageants. 10 months ago, we went home to Phils and we visited the university were one of our wedding sponsors is the School Pres. Then we saw my first cousin who's a teacher there. She was so happy to invite us to her department because they had a pageant which will start in few minutes: Miss Earhworm. My hubby was like...what kind of pageant is Ms. Earthworm? Honestly, I did not know...hahaha! It ended up he was asked to judged. And it was a Ms. Gay where the contestants make use of the linens as their customes since the course is BSHRM...so they have a lot. It was so hilarious!!! My husband went crazy...hahaha! Trust me, they took it so seriously. Miss Earthworm...wth???

My 10 year old sister inlaw was in the Miss Mayflower pageant the last time we visited in 2011. There were different age groups and it's used as a fund raiser for the church and community. The contestant would collect a third of the money also. Each constestant danced with a partner, who was also competing for Mister Mayflower. The object was to get the most money dropped in a box you were dancing around. The contestants that collected the most money were the winners. Since I was the only Kano in attendance, everyone thought Jena's little sister would collect the most money (from me). :P Most people didn't give much money since they didn't feel their contestant had a chance of winning. Shanelyn won with only P6000. In the end, it backfired on them and the pageant collected less money than it normally does! I bet it's the last time they try to guilt me in to a big donation.

The local gay group also put on a dance competition for kids. Jena was a judge for that. The gays dressed up in drag and put on quite a show at the end.

Funny topic,

Salad by itself is ok for dinner as long it's huge and has a lot of pork, chicken, or shrimp on it. Cold left over french toast is a nice desert too. I guess the OP is trying to make sure his wife keeps her pre marriage figure. :D

Speaking of that, will anyone make a new years resolution to drop some pounds? We are going to try. :ot:

not one filipina here in VJ would ever admit to have married a USC for economic reason, albeit not the only reason but a major one...and not one USC will ever say that their Filipina wife married them for that.

Huh? Jena has always freely admitted economic reasons were a contributing factor in her descision to seek out a husband from a foreign country. Should there be shame in wanting to help your own family out of poverty?

PhilippinesBanned Entry

Found this interesting so what the heck are there others?

Alec Baldwin
"30 Rock" funnyman Alec Baldwin found himself in hot water with the Philippines in 2009 after he made a joke about sex trafficking in the country. "By being on the bureau's blacklist, Baldwin is forbidden from entering the country as he is deemed an undesirable alien," a representative for the country's Bureau of Immigration said in a statement.

Gary Glitter
After being released from a Vietnamese prison for committing obscene acts with minors, 1970s glam rocker Gary Glitter was banned from entering a total of 19 countries, including Cuba, Cambodia and the Philippines. He currently resides in the United Kingdom, where he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

If I had the power I would ban Alec Baldwin from the US!

PhilippinesWife's diet changed since coming to US

She isn't here yet, but I don't know how her diet can avoid changing.

There's very little fresh fish available in the area, and what is available is expensive and generally poor quality. Frozen fish is readily available at least...but certainly not the varieties she's used to. With a few exceptions, virtually all of the fruits that she's grown up on are available here. Again, the price can be high, and the quality questionable. Some of her favorite vegetables just aren't available locally at all (thank God there's no bitter melon  ).

I did buy a nice rice cooker in anticipation of her arrival...and generally eat a lot of rice myself. Not daily (or multiple times daily) as she's used to...but I wouldn't mind it.

Michelle has lived in Riyadh for most of the last three years. So, she's no stranger to adjusting her diet to what's available locally. As long as there's chocolate cake to be had, she'll be fine. (L)

There is bitter melon here in Illinois in several asian stores. I refuse to eat it though. Jena grows lemon grass and the long purple egg plants as well as sweet potato for the leaves.

How has you wife diet changed since coming to the US? My wife is eating less rice and more spicy foods that I like.

Jena's tastes have changed almost completely since she arrived in 07. Since she stopped working 9 months ago when Kyle was born, she does all the cooking except breakfast on Sat. & Sun.

She rarely makes rice for dinner although she does have it for lunch once or twice per week. Her favorite meal is the same as mine now, a nice big T-bone steak, baked potato, and salad. :D

She has really gotten to be a great cook and makes almost everything from scratch. She bakes different kinds of bread, homemade pies, cakes, main dishes, you name it, she'll try to make it and it's usually very good!

That's why starting Jan. 1, I'm going to start working out! :o

Not much talking, just some "grunting and moaning".
Seriously, we now have a 10 month old "hybrid" baby boy. I wasn't sure at my age(45) how I would feel about starting over. I have to say that it feels great! Can't wait to wake up in the morning and see him. And my wife is "FREAKIN AWESOME!" Im not sure if it is all filipinas or what, but she lives for our baby, like he is gold. Love my family!

PhilippinesPhil/Am Couples have you talked about having kids?
It's my experience that a lot of Filipinas like the idea of having a mixed race child. Jena had the dream as a young girl that she would grow up, marry an "American" and have kids with him. American is in quotes because when Jena was young, she assumed all foreigners she saw in her small town were American.

It's interesting to me how many mixed race actors and performers there are in the RP. There seems to be a fascination with them. Has anyone seen the little white kid with blue eyes speaking perfect Tagalog? His adopted mother is a Filipina and the kid became a celebrity almost instantly.

PhilippinesPhil/Am Couples have you talked about having kids?
While reading the very long thread about age differences I started thinking about this subject. When my wife Jena and I started seriously chatting online about our future together the subject of children came up fairly early. I was in my early 40's and had never had children. She was in her early 20's and definitely wanted children. Not know whether or not I could have kids I told her God willing we would have children of our own but I could not promise her that it would happen. Giving her my word that we would try was enough for Jena. Thankfully God blessed us with a happy healthy boy 10 months ago.

We wouldn't be together today if I hadn't wanted a family. I wouldn't have pursued the relationship knowing how she felt.

That being said, have you had a heartfelt discussion on the subject?

PhilippinesSurvey about wedding bands

Brad,
Great question about bands. If they it is a Philippines wedding with pinoy couples I have seen both right and left hand. Mostly left as US had influence over the years... However if a Filipina is marrying a European or UK person then they where as their spouse is accustomed too. One of my former Managers while I worked there wore his band on his right hand. His family was very Spanish heritage. My fiancee wears hers on her left hand. Funny as she had a thick wedding type band on the day I met her. I was hesitant to court her due to thinking she was married already.. Her brother bought her the ring as agift and she loved it so much she wore it not knowing it looks like a wedding band lol.. No wonder she was single and available when I met her  Lucky me  Good luck. I am sure your future wife will accept. If you go to Cebu City Banilad and like to hang out with grouchy old men and listen to BS, stop by Drifters Pub. I use to sit there hours and chat with men from all over the world. Small little place good food. And your wife to be can shop at the many stores near by and come and get you when she is done. Or have a meal with you. Many guys that live out of town come to Cebu monthly for groceries etc. Their wives shop, they sit and get caught up on meaningless chit chat.. Fill free to message me for any advice where to stay cheap etc if you need.... I lived there 5 years. Safe travels and god speed on you journey.

We both wear rings. Jena has 2 sets of wedding/engagement rings. During the visa process I didn't want to spend a lot so I bought a couple of inexpensive rings in the RP for her. She inherited another set from a great aunt of mine that are nicer looking. She wears them when she dresses up. I wear my inexpensive gold band every day but take it off and put it in my pocket at work if I'm using a lathe. I don't want to lose a finger.

PhilippinesAge difference of fiance to fiancee?

25 years between me and my girl. Pretty much average for the girls who are marrying foreigners in her village. My best asset is I look 28 to 33. She is 20 but looks 12, (even to some of the local Filipinos) We love each other very much and are glad to finally be together. The pastor who is marrying us has no problem with us. As well as my kids, friends and family. My kids love her, have taken to her. With my youngest son sometimes wanting her to tuck him into bed. Age is only a measure of time in life. Age is not a measure of maturity. According to statistics: 25% of people in the world marry with large age gaps. This means out of 7 billion, there are 1.75 billion in large age gap romances. As for me, I WAS looking for a younger girl. Someone to have more children with. I feel like I have lost out through my previous marriage of having children at the "right" age. If I married a girl "age appropriate" for me, I would most likely not be having anymore children or she would be in a very high risk category. I choose a younger girl, and was looking for a girl beautiful inside and out. Not just a "trophy wife", but a girl who loved. I avoided Asia and the Philippines for a long long time. but eventually, I gave in. We refer to ourselves as "Christmas presents" to each other. Last year, we met at Christmas. This year, we marry around Christmas. And next year, well, have a 5 month old child aat Christmas.

PhilippinesAge difference of fiance to fiancee?

Just a little background about me. My mother frequently leaves me with my 2yr old bro when I was 6y/o. I need to cook, feed and look after him. If there's no rice, I have to find someone to loan us. I do not have toys, I used the same school bag for yrs, we can't afford to buy eraser, didn't celebrate birthdays, we got no TV, our floor is not concrete, walls are made of woven bamboo sheet and has to share toilet with other 5 families. When I was 9, my mother totally abandoned us. My father took us but he remarried-moved their own place when I was 12 so we got our own place when I was 15. The money is so tight then, I have to suit myself with $1 budget in a day. I need to cheat the drivers on my way to school, I attend classes starving and find other means to support my college life. After graduating in college, I am on charge with all the bills at home including the school expenses of my brother.

To be honest, financial security is very important to me. I do not like "relaxed" guys because I've seen what's the effect of it. I won't date a guy who doesn't seem promising on both financially and on family life side. I only had 2 bf's at 28. I am not looking for someone like Donald Trump, the guy just have to look responsible, hardworking and loving. I won't date someone just because they are rich either. If I can't sense both feelings, I'd rather be left alone. To sum up, I had a tough childhood and has to mature too early. I never enjoyed prom days- I want someone older. My first BF is a Filipino too and he's 13yrs older than I am.

They have a saying that guys matures 10yrs late than women. Well, I think I was pushed too far by circumstances that's why my fiance is so perfect for me. He's the only one who could put up and understand inside out. I gotta tell you, even if he can't have sex with me anymore, I'd still be happily married and enjoy his company. I can't speak for him what did he like in me but he said that If I am air headed, I wont last with him. We just love to talk.

I like this post and if I were you I wouldn't be "humble" as others have suggested. I like how you stand up for yourself.

To the OP, how many VJ accounts do you have? As a matter of disclosure I have one. If you're seriously curious about age gaps, it's been discussed ad nauseum on VJ since the boards have existed. A simple search will give you reading material for days.

PhilippinesWife Hair loss

I just did a little research on this because I was curious too and I KNEW that this vitamin was important. Vitamin D deficiency can cause hair loss as well.

Your wife came from an area where she was in the sun all the time! She comes to the US and loses that big source and I'm sure NJ isn't nearly as sunny as the Philippines this time of year. Multi-vitamins might not provide enough to replace that deficency and may need vitamin D supplements.

Here are a couple of links I found:

http://www.livestron...ss-tooth-decay/

http://vitaminddeficiencyhairloss.net/

Hope that helps!

Earlier I mentioned fish oil. It's high in vitamin A, D, and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Another thought I had was that Jena eats a lot less fish now than she did before she moved here.

While she was pregnant, she took high quality (expensive) fish oil capsules every day. We never really discussed the hair loss issue during that time though.

I agree with the above, stress, vitamins, shampoo type. Jena changes back and forth from Dove shampoo and conditioner to another brand each time. She claims she can't use the same brand for too long or her hair suffers from it but Dove is her favorite.

I wonder if fish oil capsules would help.

On another note, she hasn't had her hair cut since June 2011 in the Philippines. It's down to the top of her butt now and I pull what looks like a small furry creature out of our shower drain about once per month. YUK!

Philippinesmoney problems in paradise...

Sure. Mine was working as a nanny and sari-sari store cashier and sending money to her family. I sent her back home to go to college. So it was reasonable to replace her lost income. But this was after having lived with her for several months in the Philippines already. The chances of getting scammed are far higher in an internet relationship. They also learned from me living with them that I get the receipts. She scanned and emailed them to me. Trust but verify.

Our poster doesn't seem to think clarifying dollars vs pesos is worth the incredible extra effort of typing one more letter. Eg $4100 vs P4100 sent for Christmas. We sent P2250.

Right on ca_babe. One thing a lot of first-timers experience is that after you "solve" a crisis by sending money there's another crisis at your feet before they even have time to say "thank you". We teach them to do this by saying "yes" to emergencies. You'll have nothing but emergencies from then on.

I was replying to sandranj, kind of off topic I know.

As far as emergencies go, we've had our share but nothing major. We were also sending a small amount monthly for the first couple years until her Dad finally found work. We've also bought 2 pedicabs, a well, and a CR. A lot of that money came from my wife's job when she was working. We send a lot less since Kyle was born.

She sent about P15,000 this Christmas I think.

I am not saying is your case but i notice here that a lot but a LOT of women from some Countries as soon they start dating the american citizen they start sending money to pay the girl food, cellphone, school, clothes etc...how did they survive before finding the guy with blue passport????I can understand if your wife is waiting to get the visa and became unemployed but I saw here in the VJ people dating just a few months or just engaged and started sending money.People need to make sure their partners are in the relationship for the right reason. In your case I would not give more than 2k.Today was her brother, maybe tomorrow might be her mother, father, her niece,nephew....How sure are you that the guy in the picture is her brother? I am just saying...We see here almost every week in the VJ people scammed.I handled hundreds of case that the beneficiary got in the USA and after 7 days,30 days,60days just vanished.

Dating costs extra money, even internet dating in some cases. When Jena and I started chatting daily and speaking on the phone weekly, there was no way she could afford it without my help. I sent money for phone load, cafe fees and transportation to and from the cafe. It adds up when you do it every day. When we got farther along in the process I sent rent money so she could get a room of her own in the city for a few months. She was already sending 1/2 her paycheck to her parents before I met her. I couldn't ask her to stop doing that to afford the extra expenses she was incurring. Considering our salaries at the time, I think the way we handled it was appropriate.

This kind of thing happens to most of us, not just to people with SOs in the Phillippines. The question is moot. You can't give what you don't have. Putting yourself in debt is not the answer. What would they have done if you never met your fiance? I know it may sound cruel, but it is the truth. Sometimes the family and friends of our Sos think that the American has an unending supply of money. If you are not honest with your fiance's family now, you will be on the receiving end of a never ending supply of family "emergencies'.

What if you do have the money? Imagine you have 20K in a checking account and you are put in that situation. What do you do?

Other than the Marriot twice while passing through Manila, we don't spend much money in Phils. We usually end up staying at relatives and living the local life style. That's cheaper than I live at home. It all depends what you want to do while you're visiting

Philippinessending money to the family back in the phils
Appreciation or lack of it, has been a point of contention with me on several occasions. I actually think I'm at fault for expecting it but it's a hard habit to break.

I don't know if it's common to show a lot of appreciation for gifts in The Philippines. Maybe someone can shed some light on the subject. I know my wife has reminded her little brothers and sister and even her mother to say thank you (salamat) each time they received something from us. Maybe the custom varies depending on location.

In the US we are trained from a young age to say please and thank you for every little thing no matter how trivial. We say thank you for someone holding a door an extra second, thank you for a cashier handing us a receipt, etc. etc. I'm fairly certain that isn't the tradition in Phils.

Is it possible that some people might be saving face by not acting grateful? I've never really discussed it much with Jena.

PhilippinesTragic Story

How have their experiences been?

From what I've gathered, the two brothers in Dubai have done well. I haven't heard any complaints about working conditions although they haven't requested their contracts be ended early. A female cousin working as a housekeeper hasn't complained that I know of.

A good friend of mine that also worked for me had a very hard time when the business he worked for folded. He was basically homeless for weeks trying to find work. In the end he sought help from the embassy for fare home. I don't remember which country it was, only that it was somewhere in the middle east.

Jena has four other younger siblings that may or may not seek work abroad. We try to stay informed about working conditions if we can. I think first hand accounts can be more informative than government provided information in some cases. For example; travel warnings from the US government can be overly cautious.

My latest search was showing that was no longer so. I did post a few links right above your post from real estate sites. Only the former citizen is limited at this time. If you're going to own property in your wife's name, you're really going to want your children to be registered and dual citizens. Any land she owns can't go to you, or you're required to dispose of it right away. It can go to your kids though if they're dual citizens.
The first link makes things pretty clear on how things currently stand.

Sorry, I missed your previous post somehow.

Children can inherit from their ancestors without being Philippines Citizens, they just cannot buy land. Even being a dual citizen, the Philippines currently limits how much a dial citizen can buy. They're just trying to keep their country from being bought up by outsiders so the locals can still afford to own land.
I understand the not wanting to deal with governments. Never did like it before, but I abhor it after dealing with USCIS. So far I've found registering our marriage was a pretty easy process. If we're blessed with children, I'll register them so it will be easy if they one day choose to use their rights as Philippine Citizens. My current plans are to one day retire in the Philippines. Just for giggles, I might decide to become a dual citizen myself once I've lived there long enough. All those plans are a based on the wife still wanting to return though. She never really wanted to leave and would go back in a heart beat now. But 20 years down the road, her desires could easily change, as could mine.

I asked earlier if you could provide a link explaining how land ownership is limited for dual citizens. Since I didn't get a reply I looked myself. Here is what I found.

This is from the Philippine consulate in Los Angeles website. Do you know of some newer information?

Can you provide a link explaining limitations of land ownership on a dual citizen? My wife is considering naturalization and we are weighing our options at this point. I've read it before somewhere and I thought there were ways around it while still retaining dual status. Maybe I'm mistaken.

There isn't anything they can use as extortion to force us, so no we have not.

I realize this is not the correct attitude of an ignorant child ward of the government. We should be showing them our poopies and asking permission to have sex because not every person can handle sex psychologically and sometimes sex is actually abuse (like abuse of a corpse when a young Filipina does an old Americano). So we should get our certificate of completion for counseling each time we take a poopie or have sex.

I'd like my son to have the option of inheriting or buying land in The Philippines in the future. That's basically the only reason I'll be going through with this process.

Believe me, I abhor big government more than most people. The whole immigration process goes against everything I believe in but I have to choose my battles carefully. If this will benefit my child in the future, I'll swallow my pride yet another time. That doesn't mean you can trespass on my property by the way.

Have a nice weekend! :D

A child of a Filipino automatically has dual citizenship rights. If you don't report the birth, they will have a harder time later proving they were born to a Philippines citizen. If that child is never going to go there, they don't have any need to have it. If they want to own land in the Philippines, they will need it. Also if you plan to spend longer time periods in the Philippines, a child traveling in with a Filipino Passport doesn't need to limit their stay, or renew their tourist visa if entering on the USA passport. If they enter with a Philippine Citizen parent using their Philippines Passport, they can still get a 1 year Balikbayan Visa.
I'd look at it as doing the right thing for the child. It keeps their options open even if they never choose to take advantage of it. The cost isn't really that high.

I think we'll be reporting the birth soon. We plan on traveling to The Philippines before he turns two years old.
