You mean you need to indicate a specific vehicle when applying for a learner's permit? If true, I need to plan for that. The vehicle we intend to buy won't start delivery until early winter. I hope they'll accept a long-term rental.

MoBar....no, that is not what I meant.  Here's the story...

We bought a car from a private party that lives about an hour south of us.  We went down to pick up the title and get it changed into my name, expecting that then I'd drive our first car, and Julie would drive the second (new) car home.

But there was a problem with the title.  And it is taking about 2 weeks to get the title fixed.

If Julie went ahead and got her learner's permit, she would not be allowed to drive the second car back (since a learner may not drive without a licensed driver in the car).  So we wouldn't be able to get BOTH vehicles back to our house.

Technically, she is supposed to get her learner's permit within 30 days of immigration, but here in New York, you cannot get a learner's permit unless you have a Social Security Card.  Since that didn't come until about a week ago, we figure that she can legally drive on her Queensland license (by herself) for at least two more weeks so we can get the two cars home.

Hopefully the new (and corrected) title will arrive next week so we can get this done, and THEN she can apply for her learner's permit.

We're now at 7 weeks since POE -- no SSN, no green card. The card isn't even optimized on ELIS tracking yet  :clock: Did they tell you how long to expect the GC to take?

OK - POE was July 15th at JFK.  Julie received her Green Card today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MoBar - Julie has not gotten her learner's permit yet.  It's a long story - but we've bought a car and we cannot get her Learner's permit until we get the new car home.   Otherwise, she would not be able to drive the new car by herself!  So we'll use her Aussie license until we get the new car home, THEN she'll apply for her learner's permit.

Before the interview i got a piece of paper with instruction how to pay immigrant fee (in english and polish) with my names, case number and registration number. Lady - the one organizing NVC package - explained me how to use it.

Surprised that not every embassy provide this kind of instruction.

We got NO instructions - no sheet of info, no "go to this website" from Sydney, Australia.  I'm so thankful for this list - I knew where to go to pay it!!!

My spouse has now been in the US for 35 days.  No Green Card yet.

Over the past 4 years, I went through IAD 11 times and was rerouted for customs inspection only once. Too many bags does raise a flag. Just prepare a full list of your belongings and make sure the customs agent see that you are a new immigrant to explain the excess luggage. It would help to show 1+ year age of any costly items you might have (receipts, for example) to exempt them from duties as a new immigrant.

Good Luck!

Having lived overseas and returned to the US twice (with excess luggage) I think the operative phrase is "Household Goods".  Saying you are a new immigrant and the suitcases are your "household goods" should be the ticket to getting through as easily as possible.  If you are not shipping anything, then adding that "paying for excess luggage was cheaper than the shipping price" will help.

If you have one camera, one laptop/tablet, one phone, clothing that has been washed at least once and doesn't have any tags on it, you shouldn't be in trouble.  If everything is brand new, and you have a boatload of electronics, you may raise flags.

Good luck to you - and Welcome!

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I was hoping they'd say citizens since I'd be traveling with him and we're considered a family, because I do NOT want to be waiting over a hour like he normally had to do on his own in the visitors line. Fingers crossed!

It can't hurt to try...go together through the US Citizens line.   Be all smiley and excited to be together.  That's what we did when we were traveling together.  It was fast, quick, and the officer was very very pleasant.  Best of luck!!!

Question about flight booking: last time i traveled abroad, i tried to book my flight w a credit card, my husband had, from outside the US. The system would not take it. But now, he no longer has that card. How do we book his flight? Bc if i do it w one of my cards, doesnt the passenger name have to match the name on the card? I have seen some sites say you may to show the card when you get to the airport. When i sent him some original docs, I included one color copy that had on it my passport (my picture page, biodata page?), front and back of my driver's license and a note, written by me, stating my husband's name and saying that he has my permission to use my credit card for his flight. I signed and dated it. I honestly do not know if this will suffice. Does anyone have any suggestions? He will have to travel to Amman, Jordan, for the flight. So, paying in advance, in person would not be an easy feat; it is a long and expensive journey, just to pay at the airport.

Marhaba, I ran into this last year when I paid for tickets for my spouse and her sister to come for a 5-week visit.  You list your city as Chicago.  Does the airline you are using have a ticket office in Chicago?  My spouse and sister came on Korean Airlines, and before they flew, I went to the ticket office in New York City and presented my credit card there - they accepted it with no issues and the two women flew from Australia with no problems.

This might be an alternative.

Hi sukie when it comes to police clearance part stage wht did u exactly do.Like just a police certi like fill out a form n get a police clearance certi or police certi and finger print scan too? We have to get just a police clearance certi from police station right? Did u do ur finger print scan?

Dharagomzi, go to your local police station and ask for a name/fingerprint scan.  Some people have gotten away with a name scan only, but it's safer to do the name/fingerprint scan.  You will put the address of the Sydney Consulate on the form at the Police Station and they will send it directly to Sydney.  It takes about a month - so do not delay!

Checking in.. :) quick question, on the CC email, it will state the schedule of interview, right?

Sparrow,

You will get a CC email that essentially says nothing.  You will get an interview email with a date and instructions, or an interview email with instructions for how to sign up for an interview, depending on your Embassy/Consulate.

Two emails!

Hi Sukie,

Another question:

We have not received our interview email yet and need to contact the SYD consulate tomorrow.

I have the email that is published on the website, but i was wondering if the email you got with your interview info is different than the email on the website.

Thanks again

PCOZ,

The Sydney Consulate will not be able to do anything until your packet arrives from NVC and your status changes to "Ready".  They cannot change your interview date if they don't even know who you are yet.

I traced my packet via DHL.  It arrived in Sydney on a Friday, but my status did not change to "Ready" until the next Monday.

Hi Sukie,

We are going to try and get an earlier interview date, as my husband's medical expires on 9/12 and I need to exit Australia on 9/9.  Too close for comfort if there are still visa glitches.

Do you know for sure that they only interview on Tuesdays?

Also, did you ever try and call the SYD Consulate?

Thanks,

pcoz

Yes, I know for sure that they only interview on Tuesdays.  And no, I never called the Consulate.  They very clearly state that you must communicate with them via email.  And it can take up to 5 business days for them to reply.  Drove me nuts.

We were assigned an interview date very quickly, so I didn't need to reschedule.  But I had to have written permission to attend the interview with my spouse.  And I had to contact them via email only.

Good luck!

Samreen,

I check this forum every day hoping to see that you have been approved!  I'm so sorry that it is taking so long for you and your spouse.  You know, I was worried about myself (I'm the USC), because there is a woman who is my age and has my exact name who was arrested for child abuse.  Luckily, USCIS decided we were two different people.  I hope that your spouse's clearance comes soon.  I think of you a lot - and hope for your success!

Just a general observation.

It seems that many folks come into the conclusion that the USCIS or local center sends the case the very next day after NOA2.

i was under the same assumption until i checked the USCIS case update and saw the status changed to shipped to NVC(which was after 11 working days after NOA2)

Isn't it same for everyone that the case is send only days later and not the next day?

On a side note,my heartiest congrats to all the approvals and praying the rest of the lot to get theirs soon.

I agree, ariendj.  Folks are soooo excited when they get their NOA2!  But it can take two weeks (or more!) for the service center (I was at TSC) to bundle together a bunch of petitions to ship, and then another week (or more!) for NVC to scan them into their system.

My NOA2 was January 31.  TSC didn't ship my petition until February 18th!!!!  And NVC got it scanned in on February 25th.

It's only AFTER NVC scans your petition that the count for the 20-30 BUSINESS days starts and you FINALLY get your case number after that.

It's so hard after being so "up" when you get your NOA2 to realize that you go to the bottom of the pit again....

just curious as to how long after the I-130 approves how long is the process take for the NVC to process the visa and the interview and medical and all that? How long does all that supposed to take?

It's hard to estimate, anxiousI7925, as each embassy has its own way of doing things.  It can take NVC 6-8 weeks just to acknowledge that they have your paperwork from USCIS.  Then you have to get the payments made, and the forms filled out (correctly).  After all of that, NVC ticks all the boxes on their checklist, and they send it off to your embassy.  So the NVC step can be a 2-3 month process depending on how fast YOU are!

You can probably get a sense of how fast YOUR embassy works by reading the embassy reviews on this site.  Some embassies assign you an interview date, and in others, YOU book the date.  You must get your police clearance(s) and your medical check before you interview.  I know OUR particular embassy is usually a 4-6 week period between getting the file from NVC and the interview date.  So....another 2-3 months, perhaps.

Hope this helps.

I hesitated to make this post, I wish it could be more useful and less stressful to my fellow filers suffering through the process, but maybe it'll spread some hope anyway. Received my approval notice late last night and it was a very much needed bit of good news. USCIS didn't email me until almost 12 hours after my status updated, so I recommend you guys follow your status online and don't rely on their alerts.

NOA1: June 12

Transfer to CSC: Dec 23

NOA2: January 7

So this is after CSC approved a June 12 and a June 14 filer last Friday -- they're really running through their cases. I have no idea what will happen at Texas or Nebraska but I'm definitely sticking around to see (and to help). My fingers are crossed for all of you. Keep sharing updates here and I'll make sure everything makes it into our spreadsheet!

So very very happy to see this, BOS.  I do thank you for keeping your post low-key.  I hope ALL of us will be out of limbo in another month or so!

Third notice received on 1/1/2014 - this time it says my file is "being processed" instead of "transferred".  Perhaps it has finally landed on someone's desk!  Interestingly enough - this notice had no date on it, but the header on the email indicates it was sent at 11:45 a.m. on 12/31/2013.

I got my second transfer notice today - dated December 30.

I have a theory.  Every time they pick up one of our files, they have to scan the file number in, and key in SOME sort of notice to be generated.  I think my first transfer notice (December 27) was when my file was picked up at Overland Park, and put into a box to be shipped somewhere.

I think my SECOND transfer notice (December 30) was when my file was unloaded at whatever service center I got transferred to.  They scanned the file number in, and keyed in a notice.

For those of you who got third and fourth transfers, I'm betting that your file was picked up from one place (say, the main receiving desk) and moved to another section of the USCIS service center (which might be in a totally different building within the complex).  This sending and receiving triggered notices 3 and 4.

It certainly doesn't mean they've LOOKED at the file - it's just that they have to track the files from building to building.

Sound plausible????

I suggest you contact your local Congressman as well.  New York has 27 and they may respond in a more timely manner than Schumer or Gillibrand.  Be sure to fill out their forms requesting help and then mail/ fax that in.  If you get a response, let us know here on the forums.

Unfortunately, my local Congress person is a Republican who was adamantly opposed to same-sex couples (of which I am one) getting rights.  I don't think I'll go local.  But I'll do the letter writing thing, and check with Chuck and Kirsten if nothing has happened by January 1st.

So what do you all think?  I'm a late June filer - but I've officially passed the 5 month mark (154 days).  My senators are Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, both of whom are really "with it" people.  You may recognize Schumer's name from the Gang of Eight who were struggling to get immigration reform up and running.

Is it worth it to contact Chucky-boy at this point?  Or has USCIS "officially" changed their timeframe to 7.2 months, or whatever it is?

I'm glad to see some transfer movement, but wish they'd get ALL of us in June!

I agree with you. I'm all for affected individuals getting out of that awful situation, especially people who have already been waiting too long for their NOA2. But I can't deny it seems wrong to me to give all beneficiaries from the Philippines a trip to the front of the line regardless of whether they were affected. That's a lot of people.

Yeah, although I couldn't begrudge it if the Lee's Summit petitions are transferred and processed ahead of ours... I feel so awful for the people who have been waiting 6+ months and still haven't received their NOA2. The AILA attorney's comment about the transfer seemed to be based on the geographical closeness of the two offices, but she didn't have any hard facts. I don't think anything will be revealed for certain until the Oct 31 meeting but we may at least have a better guess once those hard copy NOA2s roll in.

Can't wait to see the transcript from the next AILA/USCIS conference!  I'm sure USCIS is going to get clobbered over this issue!

So... My NOA1 says that it was sent from Overland Park... Is that good bad or WTH does it mean?

It means that your I-130 will be adjudicated at the newly opened Division 8 at the Overland Park facility.  It is my belief that I-130s dated from May 2013 onward are sitting in a pile at Overland Park waiting to be worked on.  Hopefully this Division will be able to streamline the backlog.

So it's not good or bad.  It just is.  And we all wait in the queue.

Hang in there NA !!

For what it's worth, we're all in the same boat..!!

Would also loooooove to hear something, anything, from the infamous Divison 8 @ Overland Park.....

ANYONE?

I've been on Google over the last week, looking for any announcements about Division 8 in Overland Park.  I've checked the local Kansas newspapers, the USCIS site, the AILA site, and every site that I think might have any snippet of info.  And, no luck.

The only GOOD thing is that the end of USCIS' fiscal year is next Monday, and Overland Park Division 8 was supposed to be up and running by the end of the fiscal year.  I had hoped that maybe, just maybe, they'd started LAST Monday.

Guess we should start monitoring the May 2013 I-130 Filers forum to see if anyone has any news yet!!!

July volume and trend data posted! No good or exciting news out of this data. Petitions pending nationally were still climbing while approval rate stayed pretty flat (i.e., backlog growing... no surprise there).Looks like field offices were still receiving petition transfers as well, as those receipt numbers held steady.

USCIS national processing goal as of July 31 remained at 5 months. Average soared again to 16.6 months. Here's hoping October brings us some better news.

When I submitted my I-130 in late June, the estimated adjudication period (based on VisaJourney input) was late November - mid December.  Then it was December.  Then late December-mid January.  It shifted by 2 weeks about 4 more times until I actually had a MAY date.

It is apparent that no I-130s are moving at this point - because this is what my estimated status says now...

There are not enough recent approvals in the timeline system to accurately approximate when your I-130 will be approved. Please see the Timeline Stats page to see recent approvals.

I sure will be glad when we start to see some of the approvals come through.  May was depressing, but "not enough approvals" is ridiculous!

Come on, October!!!!

I hope your scenario plays out. I am a May filer hoping to get approved in October/November (Priority date 5/15). I feel really bad for the February-April filers. Most of them must be at local offices that are hammered.

You know, I check my status every day, even though I know it's futile.  But it was VERY disappointing to see that the timeline shifted to MARCH today.  When I first submitted, it was late November/early December.  Then it sat at the first half of January, then it shifted to late Jan/mid Feb about 2 weeks ago.  Today it's the first half of March.  Sigh.

December was bad enough.  March is downright insulting!  I guess I should just count my blessings...

To be honest, 10 months is my current hope. It may change with the new service center (and really should!), but processing for now is looking grim. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how October goes.

About a month after I filed, I started tracking our place in line on Igor's list. At that time we were in position 313 out of 339, meaning 92% of filers were ahead of us. I used the time elapsed and that position in line to estimate how long processing would take. It took a month to go through 10%, so I guessed 10 months. As of today we're position 358 out of 476. For one, this shows the backlog is growing, since petition submissions haven't spiked in the months subsequent to my filing. No news there. But it also puts us at only 75% with nearly 3 months gone since NOA1, which hints at more of a year long processing time. If the USCIS were processing according to its goal of 5 months, my position should be closer to 50% up the list. It's not terribly scientific, but the expectations this method has set seem to tally well with anecdotal evidence and tier 2 responses. Not much of a hopeful outlook, but it's easier to be realistic now than disappointed later. And again, who knows what October will bring smile.png

I, too, have an Overland Park, KS address on my I-797 (NOA1).  What I fear is that all the stand-alone i-130s from May onward have been stacked in boxes waiting for the Section 8 area to become operational.  So essentially, nothing has been done AT ALL on our I-130s except that they have been numbered.  I seriously do not believe that Overland Park will be staffed sufficiently to clear the I-130s at anything less than "normal" pace, which means we will have two - three months from our submission before they even start working on them.  Plus the inefficiencies of starting a new office with new employees....  I don't think our June submissions have a chance of even being looked at until early November.

And yes, the K-1 approvals are driving me nuts.  One would think that those of us who are already married have MUCH easier cases to clear!
