YES!!! You DO write your A# on the back of the check!!! As per below instructions on the document checklist!!

 

A check or money order for the application fee and the biometrics services fee for fingerprinting, as stated in the M-479,

Current Naturalization Fees, enclosure in the Guide. (Applicants 75 years of age or older are exempted from fingerprinting and

the biometrics services fee). Write your A-Number on the back of the check or money order.

I also applied for the 5 year rule. If you answer question A - you do not need to provide tax return transcripts or Marriage cert.

 

You only need this:

 

- N-400 and related forms

- 2 passport style photos

- Cheque/money order

- Copies of your ID (green card, passport, DL, etc.) 

- Divorce decree

 

Review the instructions and you will see this is correct. At least that is my and my husband interpretation. If you apply for question B. 3 year marriage you need to provide those other documents :-)

 

If I am wrong I will find out shortly, but we reviewed and reviewed the instructions and this was our interpretation and followed the Document checklist, you pass over this question:

If you are applying for naturalization on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen, send the following 4 items: <- This is question B. not A.

If you were married before, send: Divorce Decree

So it's the 'spouses' birth certificate not the applicants.

 

So that would be YOUR birth certificate showing YOU were born in the United States not your wife's :-)

I would suggest you read the instructions again if you are applying for the 5 year rule Question A. That is how I applied.

 

You do NOT need those items you listed, I should expand - you do not need tax returns, bank statements or marriage cert.

 

Do the M-477 document checklist and you will see all you need is the first section 1), 2) and 3)

 

The question: If you are applying for naturalization on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen send the following items:....... DOES NOT APPLY if you are doing Question A.

 

I only sent the 3 required items and it asked if I was married before to send a copy of my divorce decree. Much easier, and only a few things needed.

 

My interview is tomorrow!

I brought both current and expired. The IO went through them both to verify the dates I had left / entered the U.S. and checked each date I had indicated on my application, there were a bunch since I was travelling back and forth to Canada to visit family. As far as translations, if you have dates stamped in your passport that are not legible in English then I would bring translated documents - they are looking for dates that you left the U.S. within the time frames indicated.

Right after the oath ceremony, I went to the passport office and applied for my passport since we are travelling in December. It's so nice to have this process over with but it hasn't really sunk in yet! I think it will the first time I give the Customs Officer my U.S. Passport :-)

I passed my interview yesterday! YAY!

 

Appt was at 11:00 I arrived at 10:45. Called up to desk at 10:50 to 'check in' they took my fingerprints and a picture and looked at my green card.

 

11:00 IO called me to back office. Asked all of the questions that were on the N-400. She only wanted to see my green card, drivers license and passports (I applied for the 5 year rule) Had the History and English test and was given a N-652 Naturalization Interview Results that she checked two boxes: 1) You passed the test of English and U.S. history and government 2) Congratulations! You application has been recommend for approval.........

 

I was out by 11:30.

 

She asked if I had any questions. We talked about the Oath Ceremony and surrendering the green card and then applying for a passport. She said (since I want to travel to Canada for Christmas) that I might want to postpone the ceremony since the Passport department isn't functioning as it should and they could be backlogged once the government is back up and running. We shall see what happens.

Homesweethome, I just received the 'in line'. They explain it like this:

On August 9, 2013, your N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION was placed in line for interview scheduling. When scheduling is complete, you will receive a notice with a time and place for your interview.

ClockWatch2.gif  Still waiting for the biometrics letter.  We're waiting until 8/15 to call because that will be 30 days from their priority date they've given us.  Only a week to go now.  Hopefully it arrives soon and we don't have to call them.  

 

I guess I spoke too soon that Portland processed quickly.  It seems Portland really is backed up with applications since Feb.  From the chart on USCIS it goes down a notch in May but no information posted for June or July yet.  Waiting, checking the mail, more waiting ClockWatch2.gif  and watching the clock hoping we didn't miss our biometrics appointment because our mail is missing or slow.

 

Why not just sign up here and see your updates online!! Much better than watching the clock, and mail :-) Good Luck!!

Why would you need your old passport to enter your "home country"?  Once you are a USC and have a US passport, why would you need your old one (you won't keep renewing it I would assume)?

I found this old post that was very helpful.

 

And now I understand why others have said to get your U.S. passport right away, especially if you plan to do any travelling since you surrender your green card and you surrender your USC with your passport application!

 

If there is anything incorrect in this please, post. Hope this helps!

Basic rule it, anything you bring in with you, you leave with it. If they want to keep anything, like your evidence or even passport, they can take a copy of it for their records, but you leave with all the originals that you brought in.

For what ever weird reason, my wife's IO wanted her original divorce papers, wife said, no way, it would cost me a fortune to get another certified copy, her IO said, okay. Why should she even ask for anything like that?

Been other reports of IO's wanting key documentation, like your green card, passport, evidence, etc., again without justifiable reason. You are not even legal without your greencard!

At the oath ceremony, that is different, you walk in with your greencard, have to surrender, and walk out with your USC certificate. But then you realize while you can enter this country with your foreign passport and greencard, you cannon enter this country with your foreign passport and your US certificate. So you rush to get your US passport, and hope and pray they don't lose your USC certificate in the process.

Then you learn you even have to keep your foreign passport if you want to enter into your home country.

immibie: I'm not sure why you would even consider sending in documentation early?? That doesn't make sense to me and if it were to cause delays, I wouldn't even consider it.

 

Not sure what the rush would be????

 

I go for my biometrics first thing tomorrow morning, will be interesting to see when the interview date will be. I was thinking October/November, but perhaps maybe September, yikes..I better study :-)
