Chicago rocks, there is so much that goes on there ( I used to live by Wrigley Field ). If you want to go somewhere that will get you away from it, try Mackinac Island. No cars, only bikes on the island. You can drive there ( it is a bit of a hike ), but it is beautiful there.

Started the Process back in Nov 2007. While the first part followed the schedule pretty well, the rest fell apart with waiting for the US embassy in Manila to tell us anything. We're at 14 months, had the interview and just found out they want police clearance from Hong Kong. They made us wait 40 days to hear that... She has never set foot in HK. I used to watch the timeline and estimate, I stopped doing that long ago. Don't watch the clock, it only makes it feel longer. Focus on the destination, not the trip.

On January 31st we recieved our visa! Which expired 3 days later ( recieved Jan 31, 2009 / expired Feb 3, 2009 ). A week after that we got two letters from our senator. One stated that my fiancee's visa was on hold pending our sons approval ( which happened 3 months prior ). The second stated that her visa was approved. I do belive that the inquiry from our senator did two things. 1) it forced the embassy to address the issue 2) it caused the embassy worker to be spiteful. Since we were unable to use the visa ( in the 3 days we were given ) they treated it the same as if someone had not used their visa. We were made to re-submit all the paperwork to the embassy and were re-issued a new interview date. We were also told that her medical was only good for 3 months. So not only does she have to re-do the interview, they are also making my fiancee go back through the medical. Luckily, they said that they would use the x-ray from the previous medical ( since it is only a few months old ). I took this as a good sign that they would evaluate based on previous results. Well, as I am sure most of you can predict at this point. Next week she returns to Manila to go hack a loogie in a petre dish so they can culture it for a couple months. Somewhere at the end of May we will find out the results and then they will issue another interview date.

At every turn we kept feeling like approval is only a couple months away. I have been holding off on traveling awaiting her approval, so that we can return to the US together. Needless to say if I knew they were going to do this to us, I would have visited much sooner. Again I find myself saying ( if we're lucky ) in a couple months I will be able to kiss my fiancee and hold my son for the first time. I don't know how many more months I will be able to endure, it has been 17 already and there is still no end in sight.

I do miss my fiancee, I want nothing more than for us to be together. I feel that it is us who got ourselves into this situation so we should also deal with it. Our child however is an innocent bystander in this, who is being punished for his parents decisions. It hurts so much when she tells me stories of our childs accomplishments ( he is standing on his own and forming words now, soon to be walking ). Events that I am missing out on and can never get back. The stories that really hurt are to hear are how he looks for his daddy. He does not even know I exist, I am a complete failure as a father. I try to not spend too much time on this board aside from gathering information, it is so hard to see those who sail through while I sit in beaucratic hell. This process can break you down and send the clearest thinking people into a deep depression. I share your pain and understand where you are coming from. They say misery loves company but I would rather be standing alone. I could never wish this pain on anyone. I do hope that things work out for you and all who experience difficulties in this process.

Thanks folks. I've e-mailed a letter for her to fax to the embassy along with her passport pages. I don't know if this will work or not. In the meantime we're also going to apply for the police clearance from Hong Kong. I know that she has never been there, her timeline from school and work has no gaps. Along with the fact that every penny she makes goes to put her siblings through college, she has only been able to travel on my dime. If you want to skip my rant, just go to the bottom.

So this has just been a mess from go. We started this process November 2007 and at every step there has been something that has caused delays. Certain agencies have entered her information wrong, had to send letters for that. At first it was almost entertaining because they were telling me that they could not discuss the visa application because I did not know my fiancees information. I had copies of the very forms I sent them sitting in front of me. They lost forms, I've had to resend them. Our son was born the 1st of July ( he is 6 months old now ), we had to send letters to explain this discrepancy from what was initially sent and that it was ok with us. Yes, my child is a discrepancy according to immigration and we had to send certified letters saying we were ok with it. She failed her initial medical because she has scar tissue in her lungs. After consulting a doctor for a second opinion ( the doctors at St' Lukes won't tell you anything ) it was explained that she probably had pneumonia as a child and worked through it, it is not even a sign of TB. Does not matter, they cancelled her interview. She had to go back to Manila for a cultured test that would take over 30 days to get the results, surprise it came back negative ( which is good ). Both our child and my fiancee had their interviews about a week apart, told her that she should get frequent flyer miles with how much traveling she was doing ( so far 5 trips to Manila ). We thought we were in the clear when all she had left was the interview ( which happened about a month ago ). It did turn out to be a no-brainer, they barely asked her any questions. I kind of wish they would have, she memorized everything on every form we sent ( she put so much work into making shure she would not make a mistake and be able to answer every question ). At the end of her interview the embassy said that they were not going to process her paperwork until after they processed our childs. Which I did not understand because they are completely different and not dependant on each other ( she is a K-1, he is granted citizenship through CRBA ). Of course it took a while to get his BC on NSO paper, I thought he might actually hold up the process. I was wrong, his passport arrived before Christmas. Another good sign I thought, I have tried to maintain a positive attitude through this and cling to what has gone right. We also have had to prove that we are not going to sell our child when we get him to the US. Another wonderful act of our government to prevent children from Asia being sold into slavery. Now the embassy has finally gotten back to us.

They want police clearance from Hong Kong! My fiancee has never been to Hong Kong, no where in our paper work did we mention Hong Kong, there are no stamps for Hong Kong in her passport ( the only place she has been is to Thailand for a 1 week visit ). I guess some agency they farm the background checks out to requested it. So what are we supposed to do now? I'm trying to fashion another letter but am guessing it will go no where and we will have to embark on the futile quest to get police clearance from a country she has never set foot in. Another delay, and how long will this take? I've just had it with this BS process and the crappy service we get from our government. I wish I had a job where I was not held accountable for the quality/quantity/speed of my work. While I'll never give up, this is getting plain ridiculous! If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Did this one ourselves. It is called a consular report of birth abroad (CRBA). Getting a DNA test is one option but if the father is willing to guarantee ( sign and notarize ) that he will support the child until they are 18, you don't need a DNA test. However, if the father requests it, I would do it for his piece of mind.

Here is a link with the instructions. Get daddys signature on the birth cert and then be sure to get a birth cert on NSO paper asap. You will need it.

If you get married while going through the K-1 process, it will be terminated. You will then have to start over as a K-3. Make a choice, get married and then file a K-3 or start a K-1 now and wait to get married.

Thanks, he is awesome. Having a child only makes it that much harder to be apart. Being patient and having a sense of humor about things helps to deal with the setbacks, we have had more than our share.

Is sad because it is so easy to marry in the US, many here don't take it seriously. But if you fall in love with someone in a foreign country you have to jump through a million hoops just to be together.

I know it is worthless to argue about fair and unfair when it comes to visas but the delays have been because of them and all hoops that we have had to jump through for them. Medical delay for cultured sputum test ( came back negative ), lost 3 months there. They held her visa awaiting CRBA for our son, lost over a month there. They ( by mistake ) requested HK clearance, took a month to clear that. And now they give us an unusable visa? You say worst case is to re-take medical? I am solely supporting myself and my family. Another plane ticket to Manila, costs for medical, application for replacement visa, living expenses, not to mention all the time lost ( which is the real issue I have ). I am watching my son grow up ( without a dad ) through pictures, he is 6 months now. My poor fiancee has to deal with these delays and rejections, I hate to see her so depressed and sad. I just don't find this acceptable, there has to be a better solution somewhere.

Since we had our son during the process, they held my fiancees' visa until we were issued a CRBA for our son. It took a little time to get the birth cert on NSO paper since he was a new born. She had her medical shortly after our son was born. As we are to understand the medical is good for 6 months. Which is why she was given an expiration of 2/3/2009. So I need to find something that gives me a minimum amount of time or a way to get an extension of time so that she can come here.

I'm gathering from the information you have provided that he is young ( filing taxes for the first time and busy with school ). I think convincing the consul that you have a valid relationship might be harder and multiple delays aren't going to help. I don't know if his reasons for delaying are legitimate or if he is stalling. In my 20's I fell in love a few times but was not ready for marriage. The unfortunate part about this process is that marriage is a requirement. I would worry less about the process and think more intently on if you are both ready for this. I would try to feel him out if he wants more time before taking this step. If so, you might be better giving it to him. You can always re-apply for the visa in the future. Marriage takes two people who are committed to each other, otherwise both will be unhappy.

Wow, well, interview was August 5th, oath letter mailed on August 9th, received on August 13th. Oath date is on August 20th at #######'s Sporting Goods Park. Hubby had his interview on Tuesday (Aug. 5th) and was only in for 20 minutes. Interviewer told him how much she loved Marrakech and said how lovely Morocco was then said let's get started. Asked how we met, did we have any kids (no). Asked 6 questions about constitution etc., asked him to read 3 sentences and write one. Said congratulations you've been approved and gave him the paper stating so. She said he'd hear in about 3 weeks or so when the oath ceremony would be. So, it's finally over.
Makes me wonder though why we even spent the $275 for the lifting of conditions. Took forever for his 10 yr gc to arrive, only to have applied for naturalization in the meantime. Nice chunk of change to have just thrown away.... grrrrrr mad.gif

We were supposed to be there too, but hubby bought his plane ticket way early in July to leave for Morocco soon after his Aug. 5th interview, thinking it would still be a while before we got the letter for the oath ceremony. So he was/is out of the country. I'm furious with him of course but there was nothing I could do to make him turn around and come back. So I had to send the letter back with a letter of explanation. So I don't know if they'll invite him to the next one or what will happen. All this work and all this time just to have him screw it up like this!! mad.gif

Well, my husband didn't make his oath ceremony, the letter came about 6 - 7 days after his interview, and he had left for morocco in the meantime, thinking it would take a long time. What a predicament! All I could do was type the letter explaining the situation and send it along with the oath letter. That oath ceremony was on August 20th in Denver. Mid last week in the mail arrived a notice of action that said: "This is to advise you that, as requested, we have canceled the Oath Ceremony appointment on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 9:15am for the above applicant. We will advise you of anyfurther action taken on this case, including any rescheduled Oath Ceremony appointment information, under separate notice." The NOA was dated August 29th. My heart kind of sunk at the 'advise you of any further action' part. I could only wonder what that meant! And I was so angry with him for not waiting it out! I still am.....

Then yesterday in the mail arrived another 'invitation' (as I call it) to attend the Oath Ceremony held on Tuesday, September 23rd at 8:45am at another place in Denver. He WILL NOT miss this one!

I hope this information is helpful for others who are facing a similar situation.

I have a question though, all the boxes except for 'other' are checked on the letter. Doesn't he need to take just take his 10 yr. gc? What other immigration documents are they talking about? And he won't have a reentry permit.

US Citizenship General DiscussionOath Ceremony in Denver today, 9/23
Hubby and I went to his oath ceremony this morning in Denver at some place called Teikyo Loretto Heights Theater, I think it's a school of some sort. There were 290 new citizens from 70 countries. It was fun to watch as the speaker called out the countries and the new citizens stand up. There was quite a chuckle when he said Mexico and it seemed half the floor stood up! We saw the video of Bush welcoming the new citizens and there was a montage video of the american landscapes and footage of new citizens from other places in the country with a very popular song about the USA (sorry, I can't remember the name or the singer). The oath and pledge of allegiance were very solemn but loud applause when it was all over. And then their certificates were passed out to them. Wonderful!

Then he regsitered to vote, had to fill out a form for his social security number then moved on to passport application. His photos were too small (he got them taken in Morocco) so we couldn't do it there. So we came back to Boulder, went and got new photos taken then buzzed on over to the post office and finished up applying there. So... everything is done! smile.gif

We were married on August 15, 2003 and on my return I started processing the papers for his K3 visa. It took all this time to get this far (and waiting nearly 18 months for 10yr gc was no help!) but we did it!!! The journey is over for us!!

After my husband's oath ceremony (Sept. 23rd) there were tables set up for 1) voter registration, 2) social security, 3) passport. He did all three while there. Passport came a week later, voter registration card came 2 days ago, new ss card (same number of course) came yesterday. If you can do everything at the oath ceremony I recommend it, easy, efficient (in our case anyway), no hassleing with anybody afterward. Piece of cake! smile.gif
