CanadaWhat Are You Reading?
I love the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series as well. I've read them all and am currently listening to the series now. I downloaded them from audible.com and listen on my iPod either while walking or in the car. It's a great way to "read" them again. Each book is 30+ hours!! I love it!

Mary Poppins was also my favourite as a kid. I'm now inspired to read it again. Thanks for reminding me. My stepdaughter likes to read Bratz books and the like and I wish so much that she'd read something absorbing like Mary Poppins.

Currently reading: Harry Potter - Goblet of Fire. Don't tell me what happens to Harry Potter! I'm still reading!

Canadano vaccination record pls help
I second the titres test. To me, it's a lot easier than trying to chase down medical records. And probably easier on your body than getting shots that you may not need.

Like flames said, you just go to your family doctor, they take blood and they give you a report that confirms the vaccinations you've had and what you need. I brought that to my medical and it was fine. I think it takes a week or maybe two. My doctor charged me $50, but most don't charge you.

I found out from this blood test that all I needed was a tetanus which they did when I did my medical. Easy peasy.

It's very upsetting to be a vital part of a company and then one day you're not. That said, I think your boss has given you a very nice gift. Like someone else said, there' s so much to do, both physically and emotionally. Much better to have time to say good byes than to fill your time so you don't have to feel what's going on. it's a bit life change. There are a lot of good-byes and it can be hard. Hang in there. It's just something you need to go through to get to the other side.

I feel like everyone in Canada is constantly running me off the road.
And I see merge signs all over in the US....

Sigh. A merge sign! Don't see many of these around here (NJ, Pennsylvania). Plus the onramps are about 12 feet long. And, like was said earlier, people don't generally move over to let you in. Even my husband doesn't ... he says it's not his problem. And he's right in theory ... the sign says yield, not merge. I miss merging. The other day I was getting onto a highway, doing it as fast as I could. This guy who is doing at least 80 mph (130 km/h) in the slow lane runs right up behind, blasts his horn, then goes around gives me the bird and deliberately swerves way too close to me and then cuts me off getting back in that lane. By the time he had caught up with me I was doing at least 65 mph (105 km/hr) in a 55. All I was trying to do was get on the friggin highway. Maybe I'm a crappy driver, but that's a pretty nasty way to drive. And not unusual. There are rude drivers in Canada too, but around here it's a whole new level. Mind you, I realize that's just around here ... it's not necessarily the same in the entire USA.

My experience is that you need to be assertive driving in places like Toronto and people drive way too fast on the highways, but for me it's definitely less stressful to drive in Canada. Less attitude. Less dangerous.

- the smallish town feel where i live
- American confidence and spirit of entrepreneurship
- less rules
- drinking beer in a parking lot before a concert
- the arts
- getting things cheaper (books, food, pretty much everything)
- on-line shopping with no humungo shipping fees or worrying about customs
- the town I live in is dry, so we just BYOB. They'll even put your beer on ice and open it for you
- Sometimes we go to acoustic music things at a local coffee shop and everyone just brings their own drinks and no one cares. They want you to buy stuff at the coffee shop, but no biggie.
- the love of history and pride in their country
- we do have an Ikea near us so that's good.
- The way small towns do it big on Holidays. Fireworks on Fourth of July and New Years Eve. Smalltown festivals in the summer and fall. First Friday, etc.
- People are generally very friendly, especially in retail. The retail friendliness always jars me. That says something about me, not them. Though put them in cars and they become devil people and will not let you in to save your life.

CanadaDon't you love it when...
You get offered a contract position in Canada and they fly you to Toronto once a week for a couple of months, all expenses paid! I get to visit my family and friends, hug my niece, revel in the novelty of seeing Ontario licence plates, shop at Jacob, eat at Fresh, walk around in a place where everyone is nonchalant about the snow, eat Canadian yogurt. Yay! Oh yeah, and work. yes.gif

CanadaProblems, Advice, and Stories on Border Crossing

Actually - I STILL get hassled, even with my green card.

Before getting mine, I had been refused entry into the US a couple of times (no deportation or anything, just a withdrawal of admission into the US) and I expected (and was) put into secondary all the time - by land and by air. But I've crossed into Canada three times now, since moving here (twice by land and once by air) and ALL three times I've been put into secondary with NO reason given. They ask me a couple of questions, I'm usually held up 15 or 20 mins and then I'm allowed to go on my merry way.

It's beyond frustrating. I can understand them checking to make sure my green card is legit, also I can understand them checking to make sure there's no warrants or criminal issues in regards to me but everytime they ask me questions about my past from waaaaaaaaaaaaay back and I KNOW they can see the answers on their computers. Sometimes I feel like they are jerking me around, to see if I'll give them a different answer. It's ridiculous.



Same here. Before my greencard, I got pulled into secondary semi-regularly when I drove (not when I flew). I thought that getting my greencard would ensure that those days were over. Nope. Got pulled over even more. Which doesn't make any sense -- you've gone through this whole process, paid $$, been approved by Homeland Security. What do they think we're doing? It's not bad if it's not crowded, but once there was a Buffalo Bills game, so I waited almost two hours for a two-minute pulling up of my file. pita.

Since i became a USC in May, I haven't had any problems at all (knock on wood), which is a little weird after being hassled for years.

Hi,

I have an American friend who is planning to do a month of volunteer work in Nova Scotia. I'm not sure what the type of volunteer work is. She asked me if she would have problems at the border and I don't think so, but I wondered if anyone else had any thoughts. I was thinking maybe she should have a letter on hand from the organization, just to be safe. But I don't even know if that's necessary. I guess the question is whether doing volunteer work raises any alarm bells with Canadian border guards.

Any thoughts? Experiences?

is it too much to ask that my husband help out with the house? :(.

its suposed to be OUR house, yet i'm feeling like im suposed to do everything, while he talks about spending more and mroe money on pc parts and games and going out with his friends. And when i say anything about how i feel, i get the "you dont have a job" stuffed down my throat. and thats really hurting me. he keeps doing that lately and i've told him how i feel but its like he doesn't care. And hte minute i complain he says i'm trying to control him and wont let him see his friends or play games or spend money.

well **!..we have our first mortage payment June 1st and at this rate it wont be paid. Great way to start off home ownership!. and hes put stuff on 3 credit cards one which is new, and i am worried hes going to get us into debt like he did himself. I just helped him get out fo a 10k credit card debt when i met him, he is just paying that off its his 2nd to last payment. its like he feels he can just go spend willy nilly again too. sigh i just dont know what to do anymore. he doesn't seem to get it at all :(


Kimbear, sorry to hear you're going through this. Hopefully, this is a transition period. I can completely relate. My husband acted very strange for awhile after we bought our house, but it has settled down. Still, I work at home (which has always been a dream of mine) so my husband thinks that because I'm home that I will take care of all the home stuff, before he gets home from work. Huh? I'm working. It's so annoying sometimes that I think I'll just have to rent an office somewhere so I can get it into his head that I'm working.

My hubby also has weird ideas about money. We were going to get a fence last year, which was going to cost around $5k. It didn't happen for various reasons. So now he wants to go on a vacation and I said, we don't really have the cash for the vacation he wants. He says, well, we didn't put up the fence last year so we have that $5k. Plus, we were going to go away for the weekend and we didn't do that so we have another $600. Really? I asked him if he moved the cash to another savings account or something, but no. We didn't spend it, so we have it. Really? Then, where is it? It's not in our bank account. It makes no sense to me at all, but he is adamant that we have that cash. :wacko: I cannot convince him otherwise.

The bottom line is that it's scary when you've hooked your finances up to someone else's finances and then you find out they're not as responsible as you are. Your husband may or may not change. Instead of waiting for him to change, maybe you need to set up your finances in a way that protects you, rather than counting on him to change. Like maybe set up a household account, just for paying the mortgage and bills and the first thing he needs to do when he gets his paycheque is transfer an amount agreed upon into that account and then whatever he has left over, he can play with. Just my $0.02.

Hang in there. And don't paint if you're injured! Get better! Things can wait.

Oooh. That's lucky to find a Canadian who understands your confusion. It's not that hard but I get confused too. One of the things that messed me up is going for an annual physical, which I always did in Canada. First my GP was a little confused as to why I was asking for an annual physical. When I got out of my appointment I realized they hadn't done a pap or breast exam. I think I've figured it out that women go to their gyno's once a year for an annual check up and then you just go to your doctor if you have a problem. Anyway, that's how it seems to work in this neck of the woods. Though, it's possible that I still may be confused.

Health insurance companies here are so bad. If we all didn't have to call them and spend hours on the phone getting the coverage that we paid for in the first place, they would be a lot more cost efficient. The whole "in network" thing is so confusing that not even the insurance companies can figure it out.

We had to bring my husband's daughter to an appointment at a Children's Hospital. Well, the hospital was in network (but in a different state), but the doctor wasn't. The insurance company kept saying they were in network and the doctor kept saying they weren't.

My husband spent about 5 hours on the phone going back and forth between the hospital and the insurance company, finally got an out-of-network authorization, but we couldn't get an appointment before the authorization ran out. So, he had to go through the whole thing again to get the authorization extended.

A total of about 8 hours on hold or calling either the insurance company or the hospital. Part of it was that the doctor had to fax something, so they faxed it but the fax wasn't clear so the insurance company couldn't read it so they just closed the file, but they didn't tell us. My husband had to start the whole thing over 3 times, and then the doctor doesn't want to fax it again. So friggan stupid.

The good news is that every medical professional I've come across since I've been here is excellent. It's just the insurance that's stupid. They do everything in their power to make it difficult for you. And even when you think you have the problem fixed, they still mess it up.:wacko:

Canadians can travel far and wide, but never quite far enough to avoid paying taxes. Whether you're working in a bar in Paris, or on a global trek, you may still be on the hook for paying tax on income earned.

Here are some things to keep in mind to make sure you don't run afoul of the Canada Revenue Agency on your return to Canada if you've earned money in another country:

1. Canada can tax you based on money earned here and abroad

"Residents of Canada have to pay tax on their worldwide income to Canada no matter where they earn it," says Georgina Tollstam, an accountant and Partner with KPMG.

This simply means that if you are living, working or travelling abroad but you're still considered to be a resident of Canada, you'll have to pay taxes to the federal government. So, when determining whether you are going to have a Canadian tax bill for money earned elsewhere, the first thing to figure out is if you're still considered a "factual resident" or not.

The Canada Revenue Agency defines someone as a "factual resident" if they maintain "significant residential ties" to Canada. This means you may be temporarily working outside of Canada, vacationing but still have a home in Canada, have a family living in Canada and have a Canadian drivers licence.

To cease residency in Canada, and cease paying taxes to Canada, you have to go about the process of severing residential ties. This means you must no longer have a place to live in Canada, that you have set up a place to live somewhere else, set up financial accounts in a new place, and, if married, have taken your family with you.

Tollstam said that the CRA used to use a 24-month time period to determine non residency, but that has since been eliminated from its guide. She said that basically a minimum of 18 to 24 months away from Canada is now required to be a non-resident.

2.The place where you make your income has first right to tax

But Canada will give you a credit for the tax you have to pay to the country where you earned the income.

For example, let's say you are working in the U.S. but are still considered a resident of Canada, and you earn $50,000 in the United States. If the U.S. tax on that amount was $7,000 and the Canadian tax on that amount was $10,000, Canada would give you credit on the $7,000 you paid to the U.S.

This means you would have to pay an extra $3,000 to Canada.

"You will pay double tax occasionally, but you generally should not pay double tax," Tollstam said.

3. It's still possible to get double taxed

That said, while Canada has tax treaties with different countries that override the domestic law of Canada and laws of the other countries, some non-treaty countries won't give you full credit for all the taxes paid.

4. You still have to file a return to Canada even if the tax rate is higher in the foreign country

If the tax rate is higher in the foreign country than Canada, you won't pay anything to Canada on that income.

"But you would still have to file a return and disclose that you had that income, and show [officials] that you paid the tax to the country. [Canada] wants some proof that your paid it," Tollstam said.

5. Non-residents of Canada are still taxed if they make money in Canada

Sorry, but there's no exemption from tax just because you're a non-resident.

"Let's say you live in the Netherlands but you do come to Canada to do work here for three months," Tollstam said. "Just because you live in the Netherlands doesn't mean you're not taxed on those three months of earnings."

Once you're a non-resident, generally speaking you'd cease filing regular returns. But Canadian citizens who are now non-residents may still have periodic income and investments that generate dividends that would also be subject to taxes. This income is generally taxed at a flat rate.

6. The U.S. resident formula

Unlike the factual test in Canada that determines residency, the U.S. taxes non-U.S. citizens based on a very mechanical formula. The calculation is thus: You take all the days you have lived in the United States during the current year, a third of the days you stayed in the U.S. in previous year, and one sixth of the number of days from the year before that. If the sum of those days exceeds 183, you are deemed a U.S. resident.

But it is possible to challenge that. A person can file a "closer connection" statement.

"You basically assert that you have a closer connection to another country and this is why you won't file a U.S. return," Tollstam said.

I am wondering if anyone knows the answer to this question.

 

I have German friends who are transporting a rescued dog from Germany to the Newark airport.  The new owners are picking up the dog at the airport.  The dog has all its papers (rabies), so it's good to go.  

 

The question is ... will it be a problem that they are not the owners as they go through Customs as just the transporters?  The rescue operation told them to tell Customs that they're taking their own dog on vacation with them, but they do not want to lie.

 

I'm Canadian/American (and live in NJ), that's why I'm asking this forum, which has been really helpful in the past.  I've already tried googling it, and I've tried asking the Humane Society, but they haven't been any help.

 

I've suggested that they get a letter from the new owners, but other than that I don't know what else to tell them.

 

Any thoughts?  Or information?  Or links?

It cost me $80 and they can fax a copy of the letter to you and you will also receive a hard copy in the mail that comes with GM of Canada letterhead. It will have bullets on the letter, one that it meets EPA and the other the Safety Standards(DOT). The number that I used to contact was 1 888 467 6853, or 905 440 7689, 8-5, M-F. Hope this helps!


Edit: I just looked at JulyBrides link in her post and they have listed: I think GM must contract out the compliance letters to Vintage Vehicle Services because that is the same address and telephone numbers that I used when I had to import.

I agree with Minnew. I have a GM vehicle and I called the Vintage Vehicle Services people as well. And that worked out fine. They send two letters with a stamp that says "processed" on them. One is the EPA complianace and one is, I think, that there have been no recalls. I think it took about 2 weeks. They charge $80 and will take your cc over the phone. I played a bit of phone tag with them.

What I wanted to add was, after you've done your immigration stuff, remember to tell them you are importing a car. They may not ask. At the Peace Bridge, you need to go to a different "building". It was very uneventful once I remembered to do it. They didn't charge anything at the border.

I did early biometrics at the Philadelphia office as well. No problems at all. Just showed my letter with my appointment (I went one week early) and my green card. No one said a thing. They were very pleasant and helpful. I went mid-week, avoided lunch time and there was no line at all. Good luck!

Also, if you haven't done it already, make sure your evidence spans the two years since AOS. It looks like some people get RFEs because they only submitted one or two utility bills or just the front page of a bank statement. If you've done all that, I guess all you can do is resubmit your package. At least they're looking at your application. A lot of people get approved right after they respond to an RFE.

Yes,
you'll encounter the same envelope with your US passport card. Both contain an electronic chip and the envelope supposedly shields it from hackers who try to access the information on your card while you walk by (!). That's possible because, just like those gas cards that you wiggle in front of the pump, the chip is designed to submit the information when in close proximity of a card reader. Crazy, isn't it?


That little paper envelope is supposed to stop hacker access? Really?

We had an Infopass appointment today. My husband is going between the US and Canada lots in the next couple of months and the Canadian customs didn't believe that the piece of paper he has (the NOA) really makes his expired green card valid - so we wanted the I-551 stamp. I didn't realize that it was EITHER/OR. She said she could only give the stamp if he gave up his green card, which didn't seem like a good idea either. Oh well.


That's so annoying ... do they think he's lying about it? Sheesh. Also, does Canadian customs really need to see his green card? I've travelled quite a bit to Canada on my Canadian passport and I never show them my green card. Only once did the Canadians ask if I had a green card, which I showed them. Are they planning not to let him into Canada if his green card is expired? Doesn't really make sense. Not that anything about immigration makes sense! Good luck to your hubby with his border crossings.

Yesterday I went to get my driver's licence renewed and it turned out to be easy peasy. I had heard that, in NJ, you could not get your driver's licence renewed with the extension letter, that you needed the green card. My licence expires tomorrow so I was waiting until the last minute in the hopes that my card would magically arrive in time but it turned out I didn't need it. As it turned out the extension letter worked. They only renewed my licence for a year so I have the pleasure of going back next May, but I'm so relieved that it wasn't a hassle. Whew. I can't believe how much stress I caused myself worrying about that.

Still waiting for my approval. It will be 6 months on the 19th, so I will give them a call then. But I'm nowhere near as stressed about getting my card now. Big sigh. Still annoyed when I see approvals for people who filed a month later than me, but good for them! Go VSC go! :dance:

Visabird, we're all in the same boat. I don't think anyone can tell you when. I'd say any day now. A lot of people get approved soon after replying to an rfe. Good luck!

Hey didiladi9, how did you do an inquiry? Not that a response that says we'll get back to you in 60 days is very helpful at all. I'm with you guys, no touches, nothing, and I'm trying not to stress about it, but I find myself checking my status way too often. If I don't get anything, I guess all I can do is wait until the 19th and call customer service.

Very annoying to see December filers being approved in recent days when they haven't finished November. Happy for them, but what's up with that?

I just made colour photocopies, putting 2 per page. I was fancier in the past, getting actual photos, but colour photocopies are so good these days that I thought I'd try it. What are you going to do?

We're sending our packet on Friday :)

Question for those who sent pictures: any tips? I was wondering how I should put them in the packet.

It took us two trips to the DMV yesterday, but hubby got his license renewed!

Got a hassle at the first agency (Randolph), so we left and drove all the way our to rural Warren County to another agency, where they were nice as pie. They guy even jokes that this means the GC should turn up tomorrow. Hopefully soon, no doubt it will when we are away on vacation!


Nice! Good call on trying another office. Stupid NJ MVC. :wacko:
