Africa: Sub-SaharanMakeup Help!!!
Thanks for the new suggestions. I'm gonna check out the raw minerals website. I recently found a website called earthenglow.com. They are another mineral makeup company that caters to the palest skin tones to the darkest...the whole range. The selection there is out of this world. And a really cool thing I found was their sample packages. for $5 dollars you get samples of 3 foundations(your choices there have to be hundreds of shades, literally), 1 blush and 1 finishing powder (also your choices and tons to choose from). It also comes with a miniature kabuki? brush. So I'm definitely going to try this. All the reviews I have read about this company and its products have been good. Its kind of funny but I'm starting to have fun...and I haven't even started trying to put the make up on! biggrin.gif Thanks again ladies!

Africa: Sub-SaharanMakeup Help!!!
Thanks so much for the replies. All of the advice is great!. I didn't even think to go to a mall to get help...it didn't even cross my mind. I go home tomorrow so some time in the next few days I'll try that out. I am also going to go looking for some celebrities to try to find colors. That was a great idea. I'm a pretty natural type of girl so I'm looking for something like that. I don't really want to look like I am wearing anything.

We_Destiny - have you ever heard of B.l.a.c. Minerals? I was interested in Bare minerals because of all of the infomercials (they are so addictive) but when I looked in up online there wasn't much variety for complexions...In my opinion. I stumbled across www.blacminerals.com and they have tons of options. If you get a chance to check it out tell me what you think of them.

actually, anyone who uses mineral makeup...what brands do you use and how does it feel. I really don't want anything heavy...just to look a little more polished.

Well, thanks again...and I'll be back to see if any more ideas pop up biggrin.gif

Africa: Sub-SaharanMakeup Help!!!
Hello Ladies...I need a little help. Well, a lot actually. I'm a 27 year old who has never worn makeup. NEVER. I don't know how to put it on, what to pick, what goes with what. I'm looking for advice, tips, anything you are willing to give me. I'm going to see my honey soon and he's never seen me in makeup...neither have I for that matter! blush.gif Anyway, I have a darker complexion as you can see in my display photo. I came here because I thought that I'd have the best chance of finding someone who knew how to put make up on a complexion like mine...I guess that remains to be seen (I do realize that black folks come in all colors). Anyway, any help would be appreciated! And I do realize this is a rather odd request for a person of my age but what can I say. Thanks in advance!

Thanks! That makes things a lot easier. I guess I'll just put Jan.1 and see how it goes.

For those of you who put Jan.1 for the month and day of your SO's parents birthdays did you also add a copy of their passports? or was it enough just to put Jan.1 ? I'm hoping you didn't need the passports because I really don't want to have to try to get them translated.

Middle East and North AfricaHe doesn't know his parent's birthday...and neither do they!!!!
Thanks so much for the replies!!! I was planning on putting Jan 1 on both of them but I thought that would look suspicious. Thankfully he knows his birthday. Even though when we met he told me he was older than he was because he just counted the year...When I saw his passport I found out he was actually younger since he hadn't had his birthday yet. But if it hasn't been a problem for you guys then I feel a lot better. Did any of you who didn't have problems go through the VSC for your K1? If so...did they ask for more proof for the parents birthdays?

Middle East and North AfricaHe doesn't know his parent's birthday...and neither do they!!!!
So I'm lovingly trying to help my SO fill out his G325A form and I ask him what his parents birthdays are...he tells me he doesn't know exactly. So being Me...and I guess you have to know me...I'm like "what do you mean you don't know?" And he tells me that essentially back then they didn't keep track (or keep track well I guess) He sends me a copy of their passports and lo and behold there is just the year they were born...no month no day. Just the year. What do I do???? Have any of you experienced something like this? His parents were born in the early 40's is this something that was done all over Morocco or just in the town where they were born? Ugh...I'm at a loss as to how to go about this one. helpsmilie.gif Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Middle East and North Africanewbie evidence question
Thanks everyone for you responses!!! The advice you have given is great. Unfortunately, I wasn't thinking about putting together a petition for a visa when I went. I wish I would have know I would be because I would have done things a little differently...hindsight is 20/20, right? I didn't use my credit cards while I was there...I always had cash that I exchanged when I got there. I do have my boarding ticket stubs but I didn't fly into his town because there is no airport there. The first time I flew into Tanger and took the train to Fes and then his brother picked me up and drove me to Taza. The second time I flew into Fes and again I was driven to Taza. I'm just trying to be as thorough as possible...I don't think I could handle RFEs extending an already too long process. Anyway...thanks again! smile.gif

Middle East and North Africanewbie evidence question
Hey Mena folks,

I'm new to VJ and this question is for those of you who went through the K1 process. I have visited my fiance twice in Morocco and both times I stayed with his family. The problem is that since I stayed with his family I can't really PROVE that I was in Taza because I don't have any hotel receipts etc. So I am trying to use my currency exchange receipts as proof that I was in Taza. Do you think this will be sufficient. Second, unfortunately its all in French and Arabic so I need it to be translated. How did you guys go about getting you docs translated? My fiance speaks english but I don't think I would call him fluent. And I work offshore and so I don't have the time available to me to hunt for a translator. What are your suggestions for translation?

I'll give my thanks in Advance...Shukran!

Middle East and North AfricaBuying a house or property in MENA
Hey VJ folks!! My fiance lives in Morocco and I think it as beautiful country. I would love to someday purchase a house there for us to go to for holidays and vacations. I was just wondering if any of you have had the same feelings about your SO's country. I would like to hear about some of your personal experiences. Moroccans especially but MENA as a whole. Any and all responses will be appreciated. good.gif

WOW!!! I am impressed. I hope that I am only so lucky as you all are. Compared to you guys my relationship is in its infancy. You guys are my heroes!!! While I'm very secure in my relationship it's great to have concrete proof that long-distance love can last. smile.gif

We've known each other for 13 months been together for 12 months and we've been engaged for 7 months.

Middle East and North AfricaWhat airline do you use to fly to Morocco?
QUOTE (sandrila @ Dec 18 2008, 11:52 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I try to leave from my city cuz obviously this is easier than driving to Newark or JFK, which would be an additional 2 hours to just get to the airport.

I was looking on CheapoAir.com and the cheapest flight I could get out of Lafayette, La was for about $1100. It sucks that I'm not closer to a big airport. Like you said (Sandrila) flying from home is easier than driving 2 hours to get to New Orleans or 3 hours to get to Houston. Those of you who have traveled KLM what do you think about it? I usually travel Continental because that is who i get my miles with but KLM is one of their partners so I would still get the miles.

Middle East and North AfricaWhat airline do you use to fly to Morocco?
I was just wondering how you guys fly to Morocco. I've flown there twice and each time I used a different carrier...and it took two days each way. I am trying to get a ticket to go back in April for my birthday and I was wondering what your suggestions were. The first time I flew United to Chicago and then Iberia from Chicago to Tangier. The second time I flew Continental to Madrid and Royal Air Maroc to Fes. How do you fly??? biggrin.gif

I would love to get a cookbook as well. How much are they? Middle East and North AfricaSMOKING CIGARETTES
Abdou smoked when I first met him but as we were getting to know each other I told him that I could never kiss a smoker. And I didn't want to be with someone who was basically killing himself. He stopped smoking shortly there after. good.gif The first time I was scheduled to meet him in Morocco I missed my flight and came a day later. When I saw him at the airport he REEKED of smoke!!! It was the first thing I asked about after I smelled him and he told me that he was so worried about me not coming that he smoked...A lot. He hasn't smoked since then...and thank God for that! I myself am not a smoker...if you didn't get that fact already. Now when we talk about it you would wonder that he was ever a smoker at all...He talks about it messing up his teeth and the smell, about it being bad for his health. He did a complete 180 and I love him for it!

Middle East and North AfricaMail to Morocco
of the 4 things I have sent directly to Morocco Abdou has receive none of them. His brother lives in France so the last letter I sent(5th letter) I sent to his brother first thinking that his brother would send it to him...he didn't. He had a friend hand deliver it. So Abdou got the letter...but I don't think I can use it as proof being that it was never actually postmarked. But at least he got something I intended for him. I never looked into DHL...I will now. It would be nice to have Abdou actually get something from me in the mail. Also, He's sent me 4 things and I've only received 2 of them...so I officially think that the Moroccan Postal service sucks!

Middle East and North AfricaMoroccans or Muslims in Houston
Hello everyone,

My husband and I live in Houston, TX. He is Moroccan. We Married exactly 2 weeks ago tomorrow. This is all great news! Now for the bad news. I work offshore and I had to leave him yesterday for a 2 week hitch. I won't be able to see my love for 2 weeks :( That is bad already but he doesn't know anyone in Houston, he doesn't have a driver's license, and he's alone. I'm feeling guilty and he's feeling lonely. (but i have to work...supporting 2 people isn't the same as supporting just yourselves as you all know) I would love to know if there are any Moroccans in Houston (We are in Galleria Area near Central Market) and if you would like to make a new friend. He is a wonderful guy and I want him to stay busy while I am gone and not be so lonely. He likes futbol, he's muslim, he eats... :P If anyone is interested or knows someone in the area willing to make a new friend please please get back to me.

Thanks guys,
Tasha

Middle East and North AfricaArab American Festival

Tasha, me and Adam too.... alittle north east of Houston, but we are always down there at some grocery stores and middle eastern restaurants! Maybe we can meet up one weekend!

That would be great! We are new to Houston and because I am gone half of each month I haven't had much time to explore. And Abdou isn't able to drive yet so he is kind of limited. We would love to make some friends in the area!! PM me sometime!

Hey everyone! I was looking online for Arab related events and I came across the Arab American Festival that is going to be held in Phoenix, Arizona this year. Is anyone planning on going? Has anyone gone in the past? We live in Texas and I think it would be a nice small trip to take I just want to be sure it will be worthwhile for Abdou. Any comments or info would be appreciated...Maybe we could get a group together and make it a group event!

Zaytoona - We did provide the I-693. The instructions said that we needed the vaccination portion. So we took his vaccination document from morocco and had it transcribed. It cost us about $50.

Casandra!!!! Girl I miss talking with you. We got it!!! I'm so excited. The crappy part about finding out is that I found out on the day I went offshore. So we weren't even together to celebrate. Houston is okay. We still don't know anybody. We're both kind of lonely. Abdou especially when i am gone. But we will make it work. And thank goodness he will be able to get a job soon. Hopefully.

Anything else you want to add: I miss him!!! I haven't seen him since April but hopefully soon. I've been to Morocco 4 times over the course of a year.
