US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionMontreal Interview on Thursday!!!
Hey :)

It generally is first come first serve, when I was there a few weeks ago I was 4rth in line but my number got skipped and people who weren't even in the line got out before me. If you've read the reviews, I'm sure you know about how numbers tend to get skipped quite frequently, so sometimes even being there first in line and getting number C1 might not mean you're first to get your interview. However, if you're one of the first people you will most likely be one of the first served.

Last minutes tips hmm.. Don't bring any purses or anything that uses electricity (i.e phone, car keys with the buttons on them, watches, etc). Have your appointment confirmation letter of course :)

Oh and good luck!

CanadaCrossing border to the US to visit bf
Well I can say family, and if they ask to elaborate, I say bf? Would they not take that as lying to them with my first answer?

Never mind I see what you mean, do they usually ask up front if I am visiting family or friends? Or do they make me say who I am visiting?

Is this a good method: What is your purpose for travel? "Leisure", who will you be staying with "Family"?

CanadaCrossing border to the US to visit bf
I'm a little confused, I get responses saying to tell the truth about visiting my bf, and responses saying to tell them I'm visiting a friend? Which would be more wise?
I will try to fit my things in one suitcase, and have my parents send me the rest in the mail. If they ask for how long, I will have to say 5 months, what else could I say anyway, it's right there on my return ticket.

Also, I will be flying to Toronto and then to Cincinnati, will I have to go through questioning in Toronto, or just Cincinnati?

To update my list a bit, this is what I have as proof of return:

- Letter from employee stating I will be returning to work after my return to Canada (I'm going to be replacing a full time teacher who is going on maternity leave, did not mention that earlier sorry)
- Letter from my bf stating how long I will be staying with him and his family, and when I will be returning
- Letter from my parents stating that I am living with them, and will be returning to live with them on my return date
- Bank statement + Cash, showing how much money I have, that I can support myself for the entire 5 months (which I easily can)
- Pay stubs from last year and this year, along with my record of employment from last year
- My cell phone bill payment history and contract end date (to show that I have a contract tie in Canada)
- A return ticket
- Travel insurance for the duration of my stay, which expires on my return date

I am so incredibly nervous and have not been able to relax, I understand it's possible to be declined I'm just really really not wanting that to happen. Is my updated list, a better representation that I will be returning?
Will bringing my tax papers help? Will showing my ties to student loans help? Or should I skip those?

Thanks for all the replies by the way!!

Oh and I don't have a lease! I don't own a house or rent an apartment, I live at home with my parents! So I Can show any proof of a house back in Canada.

Thanks! I forgot to mention I will be taking a bank statement to show how much money I have, and that I can support myself.
Is it wise to say BF? I don't want to lie about who I'm visiting, but I'm really nervous i might get declined since we have been planning this for a while. Not to mention he was declined from entering Canada, so we could be completely barred from seeing each other..

With all of the documents I have, is it likely I would be turned away?

CanadaCrossing border to the US to visit bf
I am going to visit my bf in the U.S this Sunday for 5 months. The longest I have spent with him is 3 days. We do plan to marry, however have not yet filed for the K-1, therefore I will call him my bf at the border. I am going by plane from Canada, and have a return ticket as well. I know it is possible that they will require proof of my ties to Canada. I currently live with my parents, so I have no lease or any bills in my name. I worked as a full time teacher last year for a 1 year contract, and this year am working at the same school as a supply teacher. These are some things I have collected to use as proof of ties. Is this enough?

- Some pay stubs from last year
- Pay stubs from this past September, and from early this october
- Record of employment from last year
- My phone bill history and contract date (it ends 2013)
- Visa payments? (I have my visa bills, however not sure how useful this is?)
- Info showing my students loans and that I am paying them every month (not sure if this is useful as well?)
- I purchased travel insurance for the duration of my stay (it expires the day I fly back to Canada), so I will be showing that

I don't have too many other ties besides that.. would this be good enough? Should I show my tax papers from last year?

Just to add, I did not really think of this possibility until today (I know it's a bit last minute!). I am phoning my employee tomorrow to see if he can write me a letter, however if I don't have that letter, are the pay stubs good enough?

Also I know people say to pack light, but I have two suitcases, wouldn't it be weird to travel for 5 months with only one suitcase packed? Is two suitcases too much, would they be suspicious?

CanadaK-1 Haven't Heard from Montreal yet?

Call the NVC and see what date your petition was sent to Montreal.

We got my NOA2 on May 31. It was sent to NVC on June 14. NVC sent it to Montreal June 15.
I've been calling the Department of State basically every day to see if Montreal has received it yet. Like ours, yours is likely sitting in the Montreal mailroom waiting to be logged.

I'm sure you'll receive something shortly but call NVC first, then if it's been sent, call the DOS.

As for the wait, seems to be averaging about a month.

Good luck!

Thanks! Good luck to you as well. I found the number here http://www.visajourn...e-for-montreal/
Took two calls before I got through to someone, she told me it was received and that my packet was sent out on June 15th.

Best wishes :)

CanadaK-1 Haven't Heard from Montreal yet?
We got a letter in the mail after our NOA2 stating that our petition would be forwarded to the Montreal Consulate and that I (the fiance) should hear from them soon (as in get further instructions in the mail). We got this notice on May 21, and it's be a month now since I've gotten anything. Is this normal? I sent an e-mail to the Montreal Consulate but I got some automated copy and paste information that said "DO NOT send inquires about the status of the case. All cases are handled and reviewed in turn."

I tried calling the number here for Montreal http://usvisa-info.c...service_options, but they didn't have any answer for me and couldn't really direct me anyhere.

How do I find out if my petition was received, or my package was sent? From what I've researched, it should take only 2 weeks for me to get my package, I'm a bit worried.

CanadaFew questions
Thanks for your helps guys, I'm his fiance by the way. I asked him to post my questions here while I went to the Police station to get my record. I tried searching for answers to my questions online, but it was difficult so I figured someone here who has done it before, would have some advice.

Also, my Criminal Record Check states "This is to confirm that no criminal convictions nor outstanding charges have been found in the Canadian National Repository of Criminal Records as a result of a search based on the above name and date of birth. The search has not been confirmed by fingerprints."

So, that's all I needed? I was just a bit shocked because I was expecting to receive something a bit more formal looking in the mail. As long as it's the right thing, then I'm happy!

One more thing: So when I mail in Packet 3 I would mail it to U.S. Consulate in Montreal ? Non Immigrant Visas, right? It has the options here http://csc.public.s3...nts_Form_en.pdf

CanadaDS-156k Question
Also, for the DS 160 form it states "Electronically submitting your DS-160 online application is only the first step in the visa application process. Once you have electronically submitted your DS-160 online application, you must contact the embassy or consulate at which you wish to apply to confirm whether you need to be interviewed by a consular officer, and to schedule an interview. You can find a list of U.S. embassies and consulates here, with links to their websites where you can find information about scheduling a visa interview appointment. If the embassy or consulate at which you apply informs that you must have a visa interview, the visa application process cannot be completed until you appear for an interview with a consular officer."

CanadaDS-156k Question
Hey guys, filling out some Packet 3 Fiance visa paper work for the Montreal Consulate and I came across something in the DS-156K form http://www.state.gov...ation/82063.pdf

In the middle of the form, it asks for attachments, I've read online plenty and in regards to Packet 3 I haven't seen anyone mention to attach what this form is asking for. I believe this stuff is only for the interview? But why would they place it there? I found an answer online however it wasn't for Canada, so I want to make sure in Canada these are things only for the interview as well.

I'm assuming these will be attached to this form at my interview?

Also, I never received my packet 3, it's been over three weeks. The information here is recent and all I need right?

CanadaK-1 Visa Packet 3
I need urgent help please, I want to send this off as soon as possible. I've been researching for hours and have only gotten frustrated from not really finding an answer.

1) For Montreal, DS-156K form asks for attachments, do I send these with packet three? I'm under the impression that these are to be brought to the interview only. Link http://www.state.gov...ation/82063.pdf

2) On the interview checklist here http://photos.state....ket3-k1-mtl.pdf it asks for Courier Service Reference ID Number. Am I supposed to register here http://usvisa-info.c...ier_information under "IV Applicant Who Need to Register for Loomis services"? I'm really confused if I need the number now for Packet 3 or just for the interview. If I do this, do I print out the confirmation to be taken to the interview as well?

Questions beyond Packet 3:

Interview checklist states that I need

  • Copy of the U.S. petitioner status in the USA.
  • Copies of documents proving petitioner's U.S. domicile.

These are for K-1 Visa applicants right? What exactly would suffice as proof for both?

From what I understand is your fiance yearly income need to be consistent and above the poverty guideline as due the requirement.

I understand that, I think they understand that some people find new jobs, and as such may not have the same job as last year. If anything he could write a letter stating why he changed jobs a few times last year (i.e company going out of business, finding higher paying job). Not sure if that's necessary though.

Still concerned over the income thing.. Is it 15k or 18k that he needs to be making? If it's 18k, will our proof of current income be good enough to get approved since he only make 15k last year?

Alright, so I just did some research of my own, need some approval of it.

I followed the link here: http://montreal.usco...-k-1-visas.html
Which took me here: http://travel.state....pes_2994.html#8

I scrolled down and read this:

Do the Same Income Requirements Apply to Form I-134 as Apply to Form I-864?
No. The 125 percent of the federal poverty guideline minimum income requirement, the most recent year's tax return, and other requirements only apply when Form I-864 is needed. Applicants presenting Form I-134 will need to show that their U.S. sponsor's income is 100 percent of the federal poverty guideline.

According to http://coverageforal...overtyLevel.pdf 100% of the poverty line is $15k... if that's the case then we're ok, because he made a little over $15k last year.

Did I find the correct answer myself?

CanadaK-1 Visa - Petitioners Income
I know I've been spamming the Canadian forums for a few days now, I just keep getting new questions and concerns.

My interview is on July 23rd. I've been worrying a little bit since I've been reading up a lot more on how to be prepared. My fiance has sent me the 1-134, Affidavit of Support form, along with a letter from his employer stating he is a full time worker, his job title and his hourly pay (it doesn't state salary since he is currently on hourly pay). My fiance also sent hiw W2 Tax returns from last year and 7 months worth of recent pay stubs.

Now my concern is the fact that his W2 tax returns from last year, don't add up to above 18k yearly salary which I believe is the minimum required, to prove that he can support me. However, his pay now is above this point. Is it going to be a problem that his employee letter only shows hourly? Is it a problem that his last year W2's were low? Also, he was job hopping a bit since so he have a few W2's.. but he finally found and settled into a good job around the end of 2011.

I'm worried that I might be declined based on them thinking he cannot support me. Will the pay stubs and his employee letter be enough? If not, what can we do?

If there was anything to be concerned about they would have let you known before you picked up the medical. Picking up your medical basically means you passed it. :) Did you get a copy of the vaccination worksheet? You'll need it for AOS. You are going to feel so much better having your partner with you :)

Thank you! Unfortunately we ran into a small problem of his Passport Book being expired, however he has an appointment at an agency that does on-site passports, and they told him he can get it the same day. I'm really praying this is the case, otherwise he'll likely decide to drive 14 hours on his Passport Card. I really hate when things like this pop up last minute, but what can we do..

Unless he's had previous border crossing issues, he shouldn't have any problem. Also he doesn't need to volunteer that much details unless asked. His ties to the U.S. sound pretty solid.

Everything will go smoothly, try not to worry too much about your interview :)

He was denied about 2 years ago when trying to visit me, due to a misdemeanor on his Criminal Record from over 7 years ago, but he applied for rehabilitation and was granted the Pardon so he has a letter stating he is "No longer Criminally Inadmissible to Canada" He plans on presenting this to the border agent. Should have added that in my main post sorry :P

I know they will ask him for the reason of his trip, he's planning on saying "To accompany my Fiances during her k-1 visa interview" Is that fine?

CanadaFiance flying to Canada for my interview
My Fiance is flying to Canada this Saturday to attend my K-1 Fiance Visa interview on Monday July 23rd. We are planning for him to tell the Border the truth, that he is coming to attend the interview with me, and is then returning to the US on Tuesday (he has a two way ticket) because he needs to return to work on Wednesday. He's already going to have his employment letter with him (since I need for my interview).

Are the Canadian border people familiar with the K-1 Visa? He's taking with him my interview confirmation letter, and NOA2 that shows him as the petitioner and me as the beneficiary, I also believe it shows that once I get accepted I have 90 days to marry once I enter the US.

If they are familiar with the K-1 process, then they shouldn't really question whether or not he is planning to stay in Canada.

I'm just a worry wart I know :P

CanadaIs it mandatory to submit I-134 form and supporting document?
People can be difficult sometimes. I felt bad for my fiance because he had to keep asking his boss for a letter of employment since she kept messing it up, until finally on the third try it was perfect. Even after the third time though I realized it was a scanned copy and I made him ask his employer for an original. He even had to re-do his I-134 for me a few times because I saw some mistakes. What I did for my Fiance was create a checklist of things I needed, and he printed it out and got them organized then checked off everything. It was a little nerve racking for him but he knew it was important.

You need to talk to your fiance about this seriously, because this isn't the time to be slacking. Set a date for him to have everything sent to you by, and give him a list of everything you need. Heck, even show him examples of how people got declined due to not having sufficient proof, maybe that'll scare him into sending you all the stuff :P

I went a few months ago, and I believe the order was: get off the plane, pick up luggage, go through customs, drop off luggage once you're through, then go to your gate. I don't remember at what time I had to go through security, I think it was after customs once I dropped off my luggage.

Also, there are a lot of signs in the Toronto airport telling you where to go. I got lost a few times though but there was always someone around to help me, don't be afraid to ask for help!

@Krikit, that's what I thought before I went to my flight, but I was told in Ottawa that I had to pick up my luggage in Toronto and take it myself to my connecting flight's conveyor belt thingy. It's annoying, especially if you have more than one suitcase.

Good luck :)
