PhilippinesDo you Believe in Aswang, Mumu or Mangkukulam?

Sure there's superstition in Philippines like most countries.

In traveling the most remote impoverished and illiterate provinces the biggest evidence of that is seen in the one building that is not a clap-board shanty cobbled together out of scraps from the road. It stands in such blazing contrast in all its glory - concrete and steel construction with hardwood decoration inside, stained-glass windows, a towering giant. Empty all but one day, for a matter of hours. As a money-collection machine that has financed the building along with the guy in the satin robe up front. They, dressed in rags. Giving what few pesos they have.

Talk about an eye opener. What superstitions can do.

Anyone who goes to church is not superstitious. And, putting a little oblation in the offering plate is not obligatory unlike taxes imposed by the government. Reckon somebody doles out a peso because he holds onto his religious beliefs. He offers because he has something to spare and not because he visualizes that something unfortunate will befall him if he does not open his wallet.

I don't believe, neither does the missus. But, I tell you, there might be some under that huge ancient balete tree, as Rizal expounded in "Noli Me Tangere".

PhilippinesLess and Less Communication

is this a troll post? nobody says boom boom here in the phils.
that is a term used in a diff. country.

Reckon somebody is trolling for bites. For us who frequent the links, boom boom is a monicker for someone who drives that Titleist 300+ yards, a la Fred "Boom Boom" Couples.

Oh i like hitting up the tables at an indian casino nearby like cache creek, thunder valley ...

Me too, and I love going to Red Hawk Casino in Placerville every time I am in Sacramento. The fresh air and scenery at the El Dorado County foothills afford me the feeling of exhilaration and let me forget the bills that were swallowed by a penny machine. :star:

Pole dancing is being considered for the olympics

I reckon pole dancing is more apt at a Miss USA pageant! :star:

Where do you gamble? I think the best place is the stock market and they give the best odds.

I play the penny stocks and follow some recommendations by the Motley Fool. With this, I have a steady source to fund my other hobbies.

I am currently hooked on Modelo Especial. Wife says it tastes like San Miguel, only better.

I've tried Modelo and it ain't too shabby. But as the world's most interesting man says, "I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. Stay thirsty, my friends".

I was adopted by a goat and I am currently putting paint on the shed I just built.

If you can spare me a Dos Equis or a Pinot Noir, I'll lend you a hand. I paint good, me is related to Juan Luna, you know. :star:

PhilippinesHow did you earn your first buck?

Posted Image Have you also played jai alai?

At 16, I was requested by a neighbor in Cebu City to be her son's academic tutor for Php 50 per hour.

Nope, I didn’t play jai lai (reckon no pure Filipino ever did), albeit I wagered on it at the fronton in Manila.

My first full time job was as a clerk at the office of a congressman from Ilocos Sur. At that era when the daily minimum wage was 4.00 PHP, I was paid a nice sum of 6.00 PHP a day. How I wish I was paid 50.00 PHP per hour though!

The Philippine Congress building and the jai alai fronton were close to each other at that time and on some paydays I would take that short jeepney drive to the fronton. I’d put some money on Chaparro, a very able pelotari who could catch a speeding goatskin on the fly with his cesta and hurl it back at 280 kmph. Sometimes, Chaparro would purposely lose a game (I thought) prompting me to yell “Chaparro gago!” and he would come to the stands and look for the source of the cat call shouting “donde esta, donde esta mono?”. Good old Basque, this Chaparro. :star:

Folks, let’s loosen up a little bit and shy away, for a brief moment anyway, from the sober discussions concerning the rigamaroles of immigration and about sweet and sour relationships.

Decades ago in my formative years, I was a runner for a numbers game ("jueteng”) in the P.I. Shame on me for my juvenile innocence, I did not know jueteng was illegal! How about you? What was your first job?

The missus came from Davao and I was born and raised in Ilocos Sur. We now reside in suburban San Diego.

PhilippinesH0TELS in Manila

We patronize Lotus Garden :) great food and location. just few blocks from SLEC and Robinson Mall.
5min. walk to USEM. Free Wifi in all area. B-)

Bayview needs to upgrade. TV not yet LCD screen, NO FREE WIFI - you need to purchase a wifi card.
food not even good.

IMO, Lotus Garden is a dump. Compared to Bayview, it is a Cobalt against a Camaro!
