Even though I am not from the Uk, maybe this will help:

Please do check how well laminated they are, laminated originals are totally acceptable anywhere as far as my experience goes and they photocopy jsut fine too. My parents had laminated (thin one though) my BC and a couple of my educational certifcates and when I used them at the American embassy the last time i applied for a visa, they were totally acceptable. They anyways need just the copies, and even my laminated certificates' copies come out just fine.

Asia: SouthThailand visit, advise please
Hey There!

Thanks for the reply.

Actually, for bangkok, I am not too sure, my fiance would like to do some shopping, and maybe we will visit a couple of the sighseeing sites, so maybe in the city would be fine, or even like something accessible. We ar ready to pay upto like 120/130 USD per night, particularly in Phuket, but Bangkok as well...though cheaper would do, as long as the hotel is conveniently located....

The fiance really wants to do Phuket and specifically patong Beach, not my real choice actually, but she wants to do the whole touristy thing, so who am I to argue :) I just want to be with her, we ahven't been together in such a loooonnnnggg time.... So if you could ask someone how to book or soemthing it would be absolutely great!

Asia: SouthThailand visit, advise please
Hi everyone,

This is kind of completely the wrong place to post this question, but I decided to try anyway. My fiance and I are planning a visit to Bangkok and Phuket for New Year's while our K-1 is being processed. This is our first visit for both of us to Thailand and I am trying to book the tickets online. Flights from India are not a major problem but I was wondering whether anyone knows of a good site (possibly cheap) to book hotels at Patong Beach, Phuket for the New year's week?

I have been to a couple of sites, but they take time answering back and both of them take like upto 24 hours to actually answer back for a reservation and it was full for all the hotels I asked. Tried to go through a travel agent, but they have even higher rates than online. If anybody knows of a good htoel or two in the Patong Beach area, please do advise too! I have read of a couple of bad reviews that the pics don't do jsutice to reality, especially for the older hotels....

I know its peak season, and rates are higher than usual, which is fine with me, but I am just not good at searching on the net for hotels, never have been, so any advise would be appreciated - please help!

By the way Tim, was she asked to get a police certificate for all the residences of the past 5 years or just the one she has been living in recently?

Asia: SouthStrange question I know

DelhiGuy,

Perhaps you need to do like I do and just tell her now and again, "ok, I need a hug now!" :)

Women love flattery too, usually. Tell her how it makes you feel all amazing, like you described earlier, when she hugs you, or tell her something like you dream of her just coming up an hugging you for no reason, and how it would just make your day, etc. Usually women do like to please, so she might do more if you told her how much you like it.

I think its real tuff for someone that hasnt grown up with it. My hubby is still working on random hugs, he forgets a lot and its been over a year now.

Also with women, its tough, becuz sometimes they think if they initiate anything like this, it will lead to sex, and they dont always want that to happen. So they liken any affection to this end. This is a real prob with my hubby, especially in the beginning, I think he thot every time I smiled at him he thot I "wanted" something. Good grief! I wanted some affection. Men blur these lines alot, especially in households where they grew up with no affection, so its no wonder women are scared to hug or kiss.

Hope this mite help a bit.
Good luck. :)

I will try making it clearer to her more often about how it will make my day and asking her for a hug when i really want one.....
About the flattery I am not really sure, I thought she liked it too, but she has categorically stated that it is weird when I am too lovey-dovey or when I talk in the way when I was explaining how amazing I feel when with her....And she didnt just say it, most of the times when I am vocal about my feelings for her, she like clams up and gets all weird, and acts like she doesnt liket alking about that stuff....so I really dunno about what to do......

But thanks for all the advice and I really hope some of this asking her to do it really works.....

But then again, she is in the US now and I am here, so I guess it will all have to wait, although a few kisses and some affectionf rom her on IM/phone wont hurt :)

Maybe in my "household" we have interchanged roles :)

Asia: SouthStrange question I know

I have nothing to contibute to this thread at all. but, I will say this.
my husband is pakistani. he is not shy at all and nor am I .. think the public affection might stress him. so my plan is to just accidently kiss him in public. once realizes I am accident prone he will get used to it..

I don't like to kiss in public.

But that's just me.

We don't like to kiss in public either. Yesterday I hadn't seen Sujeet until we met up at a restaurant for my mom's bday in Tampa, which he just met up with us after work. And it makes him very awkward to even give me a quick kiss hello in a public situation like that. I have to say "kiss?".... then he will quickly do it.

Hey, maybe we shud xchange fiances :) Just kidding

But really, this is getting a bit weird on our front here now, and I am now wondering what I am doing wrong. Everytime I try to show affection in hugs and kisses (and I dont overdo it), she really never replied back in kind or never intiitated it, but lately, it seems to me there is something wrong despite us talking about it, which was funny and a good talk, since we both relaised how each other was, in the open....

I really dunno wat to do about this...

Asia: SouthStrange question I know

ohhhhhhh i know the please and thank you issues, if he doesn't say please, I don't give him whatever he wants, just like we are taught :)

I did hug him at the airport the first time, took it easy on the affection in public there, here at home he has just grabbed my face all the sudden and smooched me in public, real quick and giddy.... than laughed like a mischievous boy saying I always wanted to do that in public.

thder,,,,, he's learning :) good news, it's a hard habit to break i'm sure, like us learning no more please and thank you's, would be kinda weird

i think u have a good man :) and he's lucky too !

This is strange. I know nobody has written here in a long time but this is something I found interesting to read. I am an Indian fiance of an American Indian girl (born and brought up in the States) and I find myself in the exact position as you ladies do. She is very shy about public affection or even hugging and kissing in private while I am more so the type and find myself trying to hug her while she is shy about it all, even in private. Although the pleases and thank yous, I think we are fine on, though she does say I get too formal when I use my pleases and thank yous supposedly too much....

I think it has a lot to do with the culture one is brought up in. Contrary to normal Indian families, my family was pretty open about affection and having lived outside of India for a major part of my life must have opened me up, while she comes from a traditional Indian family, and I know her parents just expect things to be done for each other in the family rather than showing much affection so maybe that is it.

But I do agree that saying what one expects, helps a lot, although most of the time my fiance just says she is not comfortable with that kind of behaviour.

As far as I am concerned, when she does hug me and shows affection, it really does help, since we have such a strong connection, which we can see between us and I always feel so amazing after having hugged her, so I hope we keep doing a lot of it going ahead :)

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionECNR at Mumbai consulate?
Hi,

I know about this because one of my friends got hassled on this while going to China and then I found out about it.

Its a stamp that is required by the Indian immigration authorities for you to leave the country for certain countries only. I don’t have the complete list with me now, but leaving Indian shores for all countries in North America and Europe do not require a ECNR.

Till 2002, all passports had to get it done from the authorities before leaving since usually they would not get the stamp at issuance of passport. Since then, while applying for passport you have to show some proof like graduation certificates or some other certificates to get the stamp in your passport while being issued. However, if you are unable to do so, you have to get the stamp for every time you leave India for a country not on the list.

In fact, my friend, who has been using his unstamped passport to go back and forth to New Zealand never had any problems since New Zealand is one of the countries for which you do not require the stamp. However. this last time, he wanted to visit his Chinese wife's home in Shanghai and had a flight for there from Delhi and that’s when he got stopped at the airport and had to delay his flight for one day to get the stamp.

Since this is a stamp required by Indian authorities to leave the country, and has nothing to do with the American visa or entry to the US, its absence/presence has no effect on any visa approval for any other country including the US.

I hope this answers your question......

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionGot interview date in New Delhi embassy....yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Hi Shalz,

Let me explain the situation here.

I have moved around a bit in the last 5 years. However, my permanent address (an Indian concept) and hence the address on my old and new passport are the same for the past 12 years. It is the same address that I am living at for the past one year, in Delhi. (Family-owned residence)

I have just renewed my passport since it had expired, so yes, it is a new passport.

My question is, would I need police certificates even though i have just renewed my passport, which by inference means that the police have already verified my address?

Secondly, if I do need police certificates (local one would not be an issue), would I need them for all my addresses in the past 5 years? The only way that can be seen is by my employment history which shows my moving.

Shalz, congrats again on the visa. I know my questions might seem not so urgent to you since we are only now filing for the I-129, but I am trying to get all my papers together, and will need to plan out everything if I need to go to other cities. I would like to get all my papers together before time, and fingers crossed, going through the Vermont Service center, could, with a miracle, have us looking at an interview in the nest 2-3 months.

If possible, please post a list of all documents required by the embassy here.

And do stay in touch please, would love any kind of help through the process.

Thanks in advance.

Hey, good luck everyone on your September 20th interivews.....since I am getting conflicting reports on what all I will (Indian fiance) need to collect for my interview, for which i want to start preparing now, due to time issues later, could you please tell me what all you have been requested to furnish.

One imprtoiant question: Do they need police certificates for every place I have stayed in, past 5 years, or will just my current (also permanent) residence do? This is important for me since I would need to visit a couple of cities to get this done and I dont really have time.

2. I have also renewed my passport and I read somewhere that someone whose passport has been renewed 6 months before the interview does not need a police certificate. Is this true?

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionAnyone going through new Delhi!

Shalz

My hubby is also having difficulty with getting clearance. Can you post the contents of your clearnace certificate please ? they are also giving hm a hard time for clearance certificate .....Did you also get it from passport office ?

Hi All,

We haven’t even yet applied for our petition yet, but I can understand all of your concerns. Will apply from New Delhi - I had to get my passport renewed and I was asked for a bribe by the policeman who came home to check up on me even though this is my own place for the past 12 years and I had all my papers in order.

Thankfully the local Station head is a far-off relative and I just complained to him and he got it done in a jiffy. I just talked to my uncle again regarding Christina's question and he advised it is best to just find someone who knows somebody there in the station and pay the bribe to get it done, or find out who is responsible, take him aside and pay him to get it done. If they agree, it really shouldn’t be more than a half-hour job to get it ready.

This reminds me that I would have to go to Mumbai and get a certificate for the 2 yrs I was there - what a pain!

Would love to stay in touch with all of you going through New Delhi....how about starting a new topic or staying in this one for it?

KP,

Worth the try :) Now I am waiting for those women to pounce on you, to say that ok - so once the woman is won over no mroe gifts and wooing.....:) Best of luck fighting them off :)

Actually, between the two visits my fiancee had to India, I had gained some pounds, and guess who is on a strict diet plan now :( I love my sweets and this yearning for them is killing me, I ahve had to cut down to just eating a few pounds rather than the many pounds I used to gobble down earlier :)

Shalz, actually maybe I will second that. I thought I had sent a lot of gifts to my fiancee and then one day we had a conversation about it, and she made me count hem and found out she had sent me more :( But she did say I put in a lot of thought to my gifts :)

Hey, Kpathak, jsut read you message to me on one of the forums, thanks for the welcome...and if anyone does need info on getting things done in Delhi, not with the embassy though, do ask...I will try to help, meanwhile, I am just trying to get started on my visa journey, hope you veterans would be helpful, one or two of you already have..THANKS

I have asked this question in another section, but if anyone here can answer it would be great too - My fiancee (USC) doesnt have her naturalisation certificate. Now, they ask for the details of that on the I-129 form though you can send in only the passport copy as per the form. I have heard they may RFE for this, plus they ask for the naturalisation certificate at the embassy. How big a boo-boo is this do you think?

I have found out it takes 1 year to replace it, so maybe we can apply and attach the receipt and exlain the situation, do you think they would understand?

I am trying to get this done quickly and since we are going through VSC, hopefully ours will be short wait...no offence to the others of course

And hey, if you guys would rather that I ask tehse questions in the K-1 visa section, I will, but thought I would rather ask all my questions to the India related people....

I have asked this question in another topic, but no one from India answered, and the discussion on that topic has gone to the extent to state that it looks like India consulates dont approve of such cases, which is giving me the jeebees so here goes:

My fiancee (USC) is a B-school student and can't show income at all, for previous years either. The option we are going with is taking my uncle (godfather, not really related) as a co-sponsor, he lives far off on the West Coast as compared to my fiancee who lives on East Coast. But he is a respected B-school dean and has ample income as well.

If we show him only as a sponsor would there be issues? Has anyone faced this or gone to the embassy with just a co-sponsor?

I am really getting worreid since someone has mentioned on the other topic that Indian consulates might not sanction such cases, even though we can show anybody else as a co-sponsor, because there have been cases of fraudelent co-sponsors since the I-134 is unenforcable.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionPlane Ticket Planning - Embassy Interview
Rather than buy changeable or refundable tickets, what I generally tend to do is go to my travel agent and book the flights I might be taking well in advance to get a cheap ticket. It can even be 2-3 bookings on or around the same day. There is no charge for it, since I dont buy the ticket. However the travel agent, generaly gives me a cut-off date of around a week before the flight where I have to confirm my booking and actually buy one ticket. This is completely possible at all travel agents. I do this here in India, have done this in the US and a few European countries as well, and from what I udnerstand its entirely possible anywhere since travel agents tend to book blocks of tickets in advance, and can easily sell off a last minute booking cancellation, even on empty flights.

Of course, you either need to know a travel agent well to do this or find a reliable one. Maybe you can ask your fiance to find one like that through her firends/family.

Shalz is absolutely right, at least at the Delhi pasport office if you need something done urgently or even in time, you have to go through an agent. In Delhi, they are all available outside the office generally.

Hi kp,

I am pretty sure they should be able to do so much earlier. As usual, the authorities jsut give vague dates to stretch the time they would ahve to do the needful, especially for honest people who go through proper channels. I suggest that your wife take someone there who knows the ropes of getting after the people in-charge, finding out the right "contact" and greasing their palm.

Hey,

I would suggest putting down the husband's name, since in India, the husband's name is required if the lady is married. That piece of information is only a formality and there shouldn't be any delay since they will not be really checking up on you or anything, but if you put in the father's name they will question that since a married woman needs to put in the husband's name and it is apparent she is married.

Timesnap, may I ask what problems you are facing with your police certificate?

The rule states that tehy do need to identlfy malaria in teh medical, however, if the eprson is healed and the doctor states that the virus is out of the person's system, then that person will be allowed to travel to the US and hecne granted visa.

This is confirmed with the Indian embassy itself, and is applciable on both non-immigrant and immirgant visas.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionWhen does gov. need to see financial records????
Hi All,

1happy guy and anyone else who can reply,

This information is interesting and per your experience, I wanted to ask regarding my situation as well. My fiancee (USC) as a co-owner in a business for the past 4 years, has enough tax returns to show for the past 3 years, but not any real income in the bank, since she owned the company in conjunction with her Dad and although he did post a lot of tax on her name, she normally only had enough money for her expenses in her account so she we can't show bank accounts with a lot of income or savings. Do you think tax transcripts would be enough? She is not currently working, has just joined B-school, so we are adding a co-sponsor anyway......But still, can they ask for her bank accounts, although the co-sponsor alone already has enough income to show.....

We are currently planning to show only her tax transcripts, state that she is not really working now, and show all of the co-sponsor's papers including assets, bank account statements, tax transcripts, pay stubs, employee letter
