CanadaShould I be panicking?

Hey Emily, can his parents fax the W2s to the hotel this weekend? Do you also have bank statements or a letter from his bank showing his deposits for the year? I think you'll be okay.

It's 5:30 a.m. now and I haven't slept. I think I checked my paperwork about 20x tonight and then went over it on the phone with my husband (I don't think he was listening :P) before I finally decided no more checking. My flight is at 10 so I'll just sleep on the plane. His flight leaves in 2 hours so I'd better call him to make sure he's up!

Thanks everyone for chiming in. Ack - misa, SO sorry you're not sleeping either. Are we gonna be happy when Monday's over, or what?

His folks are faxing us the 2006 W2s today. At least I'll have them just in case, but I'm sure everyone's right -- I can't see them asking about `06 until after the filing deadline.

We did not get anything from his bank -- we just have the IRS transcripts since it shows that he makes more than enough, which is the point of the I-134 and supporting documentation. Our supporting documentation shows he makes enough. I figure bank statements are redundant (even though I know this process is a huge fan of redundancy); of course he has the money, we just showed you our IRS statements. I know everyone's used to bringing 10 things that show the same thing over and over, but I hesitate in giving them 2 forms of evidence that prove the same thing. (I just don't like the idea of handing over banking documents to anyone -- this process is personsal enough.)

We figure we're offering them the best possible proof in showing 3 years of IRS transcripts (with back-up of `06 W2s). I guess I find out if we're wrong on Monday since we don't really have any way of getting a bank statement by then.

Anyone else go to their interview with only a notarized I-134 and 3 years IRS transcripts? I just can't see them saying that it's not enough proof...

Anyway -- thanks again, everyone. Really, REALLY appreciate it.

CanadaShould I be panicking?

...how could they require your tax transcripts from 2006 before April 15. I really hope you don't have a problem with this; it would be very unfair of them to require this information. My sister, for example, only got her W-2's in the mail yesterday, and most people are still trying to sort out their taxes as we speak. Well, they're probably sleeping actually, but maybe in a few hours they'll be trying to sort out their taxes.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for responding. This was my certainly my take on it, but it's nice to hear it from someone else. (Good Lord, what are you doing up at this hour?!)

Of course he couldn't have transcripts for `06, but he does have a couple W2s (just not all). If my interview was 2 or 3 weeks ago, this would not be an issue.

You're right, though. Logically, we should not be expected to produce tax info for `06 prior to the filing deadline. (Man, I hope we're right!!)

Thanks again for responding. I know people are hesitant to respond when only an opinion can be given, but logic is failing me this week and I really needed someone else to chime in on this. MUCH appreciated. (Really, truly - thank you!!)

Now get some sleep!!

CanadaShould I be panicking?
It's me. Again.

Long Version:

Since hubby is self-employed (he makes far above the minimum requirements) I had him get IRS Transcripts at the end of last year for 3 previous years; 2005, 2004 and 2003. This is all the financial evidence he has (since a letter from an employer, etc... is not an option.) But since he does well, the transcripts show, that he can, without a doubt, support both of us on his average income. Plus, since we were expecting an interview date in Jan. or Feb., I did not think 2006 would be an issue.

I am now freaking out (can you tell? it's 4:13am!!) because it has just occurred to me that we do not have any financial info to submit for 2006. As you know, we're right in the middle of tax season, and hubby has yet to receive all of his W2s. I'm trying to convince myself that we couldn't show them anything for 2006 if we wanted to, but the truth is (since hubby is already here with me) that I could have his parents FedEx the W2s he has received to our hotel in Montreal. Of course we'll be at the consulate before FedEx would make it's first 9-10am delivery, but, worst case scenario, (if asked) I could explain to the CO that although hubby is in the process of filing for `06 we of course, do not have a tax return and/or an IRS transcript, but if I can come be allowed back a few hours later, I could produce some W2s...? What do you think? Should I have my inlaws FedEx hubby's W2s to the hotel? Do you even think it's an issue (since we're in the middle of tax season and most people have yet to file and/or receive W2s?)

Dear GAWD, I am positively ill over this...

Thanks for listening.

ETA: the snag was at the consulate when the person there asked for my medical and opened it, not at the POE. I just re-read what I wrote about that. No problems at POE.

Yup it was a breeze at the interview and the POE but it was still nerve wracking as hell. The only potential snag was the stupid medical. I would have been livid if the Dr.'s office did not fax back the info ASAP. I guess they realised the seriousness of their error so that's why they faxed it back right away. I paid for a copy of my medical. I should call them and make me mail me a COMPLETE one this time.

I hope that my AOS will be as painfree as this. I was going to apply for EAD/AOS right away but I think this week I will take a break from USCIS!

Oh my gosh, so when they opened the sealed envelope at the POE it was missing some medical docs?! I take it the Dr's office (I went to the same one) faxed the necessary info to the POE office then? Yikes, I would've been royaly pissed!

Hmm, so do we need a second copy of the medical (for AOS)? (Perhaps I should pick one up before I move?)

CanadaGOT IT!

Congrats!!!

I'm actually going to Montreal for my interview (Thursday the 29th!), and I'm getting very worried that the visa will not be mailed to me in time before Easter weekend. If my interview is on Thursday, would there be a great chance that I can get it by the following Thursday? The Friday and Monday are holidays, so if I don't get it, I'd have to wait until Tuesday to move, which totally ruins our plans with family there. :(

Also, the xpresspost envelope, did you purchase the "signature upon delivery" option? And did you complete the TO and FROM section, or did you just let Montreal complete that part?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm getting quite anxious! :)

Karla

Karla -- it's hard to say when it will get to you. They told me I'd get it within a week and it took exactly 1 week. It depends on how long they take to process it and when they actually send it out. (I interviewed/was approved on Monday the 19th but it says it wasn't issued until the 22nd.) But 1 week is the longest I've heard anyone's waited for their's.

Yes, I purchased the signature upon delivery option and I only completed the "TO" section with my address. I asked one of the ladies at the consulate if I should put their address in the "FROM" section but they said they'd just stamp it (which is exactly what they did). Don't forget to write down the tracking number! (Like my dumb-a$$ did!) As soon as it's in the mail you'll get a good idea of when you can expect to receive it.

Good luck on Thursday!

Congrats! I think you were thinking of Emily Rugburn. She got her visa in the mail as well. :)

I did have my interview last week but in Vancouver so I picked up the visa that day.

Yup, could have been me you were thinking of. I had my interview on Monday the 19th, and I didn't get the passport avec Visa in the mail until yesterday (the 26th), so it took an entire week (5 business days).

Plus, I forgot to write down the tracking number so I panicked all weekend long.

I can't help you because I took the K-3 route and that's the only process I know about.

Perhaps if you shared more information... Like, what exactly you're filing for?

The best (general) advice I can give is bring all originals (when available) and one copy of absolutely everything. Then you're covered no matter what.

Good luck to you!

Try posting your stuff on Craigslist....really great website....go to http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/ca and choose the city closest to where you are!

That's exactly where I'm headed with it!

My furniture's really, really nice and only 3 years old (I bought it when I bought the house). I hate to see it go, but I'd much rather sell it than move it.

I went with ABF Upack (http://www.upack.com). They offer "relocubes" that you stuff full and partial trailers. You may want a partial trailer though and you can hire people locally to move it into the trailer if that works out cheaper.

Thanks so much for this, misa! It sounds like you've had a good experience with them so I'll definitely see if they're for me.

Good luck with the house selling and packing and moving! I ended up leaving all my furniture behind except my expensive Queen mattress that I bought last year. I purged like crazy! My cube with my stuff in it should arrive sometime tomorrow.

For now, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that you're legally allowed to be reunited with your husband! Seems almost surreal, eh?

I think I read about the Cube thing on another thread. Basically, you pack that yourself, right? Because I'm moving some furniture (I think...) I'll probably need to hire movers just so they can carry heavy stuff up & down stairs (I'm not exactly a She-Woman!). But you've got me re-thinking this cube thing; if I can sell all my furniture, then maybe it's for me... Is there a website you can post?

So basically, you cross the border and your stuff follows you? They don't need you at the border when your stuff comes in? Interesting...

CanadaK-3 Visa in Hand!!!

Emily congrats! so nice to read of your quick and easy interview in Montreal...

Did you drive from Toronto? or fly? We plan to drive when the time comes, if you drove did you get the directions from MapQuest? Once you were in Montreal was it easy to find your way around and to the hotel? My husband and I are notorious for getting lost..LOL

Kimmbo

Yup, we (rented a car and) drove. Took us about 5 hours + 15 min. as well. Very easy drive via the 401. We stayed at Hôtel La Tour Centre-Ville which was, literally, across the street from the consulate. ($74/per night from expedia.ca, plus $18 for underground, overnight parking.) As others have mentioned, it's only a 2.5 star hotel, but our room was clean and quite large (had a kitchen, bathroom - shower and tub -, sitting area, table & chairs, queen-size bed and indoor pool on the top floor) and, since I didn't want to have to drive the morning of the interview and I didn't trust Hotwire to pick a hotel for me, it was the best option for us.

Our directions from MapQuest were actually very accurate, although, the hotel is super close to the highway so we didn't have to do much downtown driving/navigating (which, the little that I did do, I found moderately confusing; not the roads, per se, but the location of the street signs and traffic lights -- I didn't know where to look! And also, keep in mind, no right turns on red lights!)

Good luck!!

I'm sure they could, but the chances of that would be extremely slim under normal conditions!! Now if today you go out and kill someone, chances are u would be denied, lol

Yes, this a good point, flames. Although my Visa was approved on the 19th (Monday), it actually says that it was issued on the 22nd (Thursday), so I'll bet it didn't go out until either Thursday or Friday which is why it didn't arrive until today. Emily, when are you crossing the border and which border crossing will you be using?

Now the craziness of packing for you. :)

Yes, the crazy packing has already begun! I own a house so I'll be moving some (large-ish) furniture so it's not like I can just pack up a car and go. (Blech!)

We'll be crossing at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge. Hopefully sometime in May, but I have to sell my house before activating the Visa (and before hubby and I can buy a new house in upstate NY), so I'm thinking the first week of June at the very latest.

As soon as the house is sold, I'm going to cross and activate the Visa. During that week-long trip, we'll buy a house there (we have an agent looking for us), and then we'll come back here to move all my stuff to the new house. It sounds pretty stressful and hectic, but I truly believe the hard part is over. (Until I begin AOS, that is!)

Oh, funny thing; hubby and I stayed at Hôtel La Tour Centre-Ville while we were in Montreal, and the night before the interview, we ate at the Chinese restaurant on the main floor. My fortune?: "You will step on the soil of many countries."

How crazy is that?!?

CanadaK-3 Visa in Hand!!!
Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to thank the VJ community for all the moral support and advice I received in the days leading up to my K-3 interview when I completely lost sight of all things logical. (i.e. Thanks for tolerating my freak-out!). It is impossible to accurately iterate the toll this process takes on you unless you have experienced it first hand. On the surface it's just a bunch of forms you have to fill out and a 5 minute (or less) interview at a US consulate, but the stress of worrying if you dotted your i's, crossed your t's and checked the correct boxes is enough to drive you mad. Especially when the stakes are so high. No one knows this better than the VJ community. This forum, that allows for the open exchange of ideas and information is, in a word, invaluable. Thank you SO much!

Everything went great last week (you can read my fairly detailed review here) and I received my passport avec Visa in the mail today! (Yes, 7 full days/5 business days after my interview.)

Anyway, thanks again everyone. I know this is painfully cliché, but I really don't know what I would have done without this place. I'll probably take a break from VJ for a short while (my house goes up for sale in a couple of weeks!), but I'll be back soon enough to read POE reviews and research the AOS process. (Ugh!)

Cheers!,

CanadaIMMUNIZATION RECORDS

The nurse also said that I should call the consulate doctor if that doesn't work and explain my records are sealed and see what they say.

That won't do any good. They need proof of your immunities and they will tell you the same thing - to go to a walk-in and have them done. Again, there is no reason a clinic/doctor should deny you a routine MMR (or TD) shot.

oh yeah, how long does a titer test usually take.

I'm sure it depends on where you go. When I went to the walk-in clinic they told me 1-2 weeks. After a month went by I and hadn't heard from them, I called and everything was in, but I don't know exactly when they received the results from the blood they took (the testing was done off-site).
EmilyRugBurnFemale02007-03-30 18:00:00
CanadaIMMUNIZATION RECORDS

I finally got ahold of the doctor's office to make an appt for that MMR and tetanus. They WILL not do the MMR, becauussssssssssse...........I had them as a child, mandatory, but they won't put that in writing, they won't give me another one and if I want to wait a "FEW" weeks, they could do another titres test, UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh

Just because they are mandatory does not mean you had them done. (Which is why US immigration wants proof.) From what I remember, you are to have two rounds of MMR shots when you are a child. I only had record of having the first round done. I got titres done showing that I was immune to Measles and Mumps (I had chicken pox as a child) - but not Rubella - so I had to have an MMR shot anyway.

I would go to a walk-in clinic, tell them you have no record of ever having your MMR shot and that you need it ASAP (along with proof that you've had it done) because you are immigrating to the US and they require it. Explain that you cannot wait "weeks" for the titres/results to come back. I don't think there is any harm in having this shot done (even if you are already immune) since, when I had it done, I was already immune to Measles and Mumps.

Emily, they also offer "terminal to terminal" service which is cheaper than door to door. The closest terminal in Toronto is Brampton but you have to haul your stuff there and load the trailer or cube and then you do the same at your destination. So if you know someone who has a truck or something you can borrow, that will shave hundreds off your price. For example, terminal to terminal service with me would have cost about $700 USD but door to door is $1,100 USD.

Ooo, thanks! Very good info! I like that they give you lots of options on how you want to do things.

Heh, no problem!

1. They didn't ask me for a list of what I brought (I had a list though) and they didn't ask if my other belongings were coming later. I assume it's because the ABF Upack driver will have to deal with that when he gets to the border.

2. The I-94 is the departure record which basically states when you have to leave the U.S. on that particular visa (K3, 2 years multiple entry). It's just a passport sized sheet stapled on the page adjacent to your visa page in your passport.

Perfect! Thanks! Yes, I figured I'd make a list too, just in case.

Great review, misa! 2 quick questions... (I hope you don't mind! I'm practically stalking you today -- that's what you get for being only a few steps ahead of me in this process!):

1. Did they ask you for a list of everything you brought with you? (Did they ask about how the rest of your belongings were getting to the US?)

2. What exactly is the I-94?

Okay, so that was more like 3 questions... :innocent:

Canadahas anyone had luck with upack?

Upack update! Cube was delivered today at about 3 p.m. with only one minor snag. The terminal forgot to give the driver the key to the ABF padlock but no worries. Instead of having him go get it and come back, the dispatcher actually drove over right away to save me time. It was unlocked within 30 mins.

They pick up the cube on Monday. :)

Awesome, misa! Glad you got your stuff a-okay!

For those who used movers, can anyone recommend a good one (just in case we can't sell our furniture)?

I called 4 moving companies for estimates and chose United. Make sure when you're doing your cost comparisons that you read the fine print and check each line item for the rates. Each type of service is charged at a different rate, so you need to compare apples to apples. You'll see what I mean once you receive the estimates. Your best rates will come from the major moving lines, because they can bundle your belongings with other deliveries in order to save on shipping costs.

GREAT info. Thanks for the advice, Krikit!

Thanks Emily for the reply. They said they couldn't give me a tracking number. I actually called back (hopefully didn't annoy them), but I wanted to see if it was at all possible to pick it up, and the lady this time, said they sent it. I have no idea what is going on at this point... heh

Arg, don't you hate it when 2 people at the same office give you 2 different answers?

I can relate to your stress level right now. I kicked myself for days for not writing down that tracking number. Would have saved me a lot of grief.

Although, if they say they can't give you the tracking number, chances are it's because it's already gone out. Mine was mailed on a Friday and received the following Monday, so hopefully yours will follow suite.

My fingers are crossed for you -- I'm sure everything'll be fine.

Now practice your happy dance for when it arrives in the mail -- my husband told me mine was pretty impressive!

NOTE: Those who are reading this while waiting for your interview: You think the worst of it's going to be over after you interview and are approved, but the 2-7 days wait for your passport/visa to show up in the mail is just as bad. Remember to write down your tracking number!
