CanadaAm I missing anything for the interview?
QUOTE (ashenflowers @ Sep 17 2009, 08:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Are you supposed to bring 3 copies of everything?

direct quote from my letter (page 2 of 3):

"Please bring to your interview the original and one copy of the following documents"; it then lists the usual stuff (birth certificate, police clearance, evidence of support, evidence of domicile, letter of intent to marry, etc...)

the selection in the vending machines is very poor.

that's a really handy nugget of info, actually.

re: the list-looks like you have more than enough. I'm just bringing what they asked-birth cert., police check, blah blah (plus a copy of it, of course)... and photos/airline tickets. I feel so minimal in comparison..!

Thanks TS... Excellent-more waiting. I'm contemplating getting "no more waiting' engraved into the inside of my ring... seriously.

Thanks!

re: the time it takes at the airport--what do they do? yoink you into a small room...? Do I hand over the visa/sealed envelope the Embassy zooms my way if approved...?

CanadaSo, I'm thinking ahead post receiving my visa
Some questions:

1-the minute I get my visa, I intend on flying out to the States to be with the Monsieur. Is an airport do-able on a K-1? i always see anecdotes about people driving through a POE...

2-this AOS stuff... sigh. What do I start with after my wedding? AOS? EAD? Applying for a SSN (almost wrote SIN there... lol)... Yes, i intend on living in the US. And yes, I intend to work. My only concern is being able to visit Canada early next year... is this possible when waiting on the AOS stuff (if that is indeed the next step)?

I'm confused in advance (as usual)-any light shed on the above would be super helpful so that I know what to do and when to do it...

Thanks.

Canadaholy effin drama
Chin up. Live and *enjoy* your life with your husband!! Cut off any and all information re: this person... Make sure you and your husband both politely request from his brother, family, whoever the hell all else that, due to incredibly unwarranted and immature behaviour on this person's part, you have no want or need to have to deal with her at all. No visits. No calls. No anecdotes about her from anyone.

Give her the shade, lady--she'll freeze out in time and KNOW that that sort of behaviour will not be acknowledged whatsoever!!

Yup, that's normal unfortunately.... it can take them a few days to process the visa, package it all together, then mail it out.... Especially if there is a weekend in between

Is your flight re-bookable?

Yeah it is-I can change it up to 45 minutes before the flight for $75.00... I ensured I had that option on the off chance this happened... Apparently, it's not as off-chance-esque as I'd assumed..haha It's @ 5:30, so I'll wait on it during the day.

I got info via the consulate that visas are sent within the week of your interview... eesh. It would appear that it's yet another waiting session smile.gif

The letter from the Embassy that I got specifically asked for the XPresspost envelope. It's a bigger one, has gueranteed next day delivery, and cost $13.00 CAD.

I had my interview on Monday-am STILL freaking waiting for my visa. I'm to fly out on Monday night.... needless to say, I'm beginning to spaz out a bit here...

CanadaMy visa has not arrived and has not even been sent out yet...what to do??
I've been home all day, and lo and behold, the envelope was crammed in my mailbox.

Canada Post has been sent an email about this super-breach.

That said... *happy dance*-I have it!!

CanadaMy visa has not arrived and has not even been sent out yet...what to do??
Ron/Sharon: for reasons precisely as you stated is why I asked/insisted on knowing if stuff was indeed sent. I also requested a timeframe (in case it wasn't sent) as to when I should expect it.

domegirl: you should email Montreal, stating your case number, your intended departure date, and a request to know the actual status of your case. If they don't get back to you by end of day, email again. And again later if necessary. I was pushy because, as I told them, I complied in more than a timely manner with THEIR requests-months of them!-as such, an actual answer is not unreasonable. They got back to me soon after that...

domegirl-this might be a small slice of good news for you (and hopefully me, for the love of god). As I'd said, I'd written the embassy-I got a reply at 9:30 last night-short, but potentially sweet:

The visa was issued and mailed, you should be receiving it soon.

I'm thinking they sent a whack of them last week yesterday.... I'm crossing my fingers for both/all of us.

thank you!

I'm rebooking for Wednesday night. That and I sent a few emails to the consulate, heckling/harassing them in a formally polite manner (having worked for a politician for a number of years has helped immensely re: the art of polite heckle/harassing..haha.

How long on average did it take everyone to get their visa from their actual interview date?

I'm likely gonna have to re-book tonight's flight. My interview was last Monday (Sept. 28th)... should I re-book for this Thursday evening...? I would love to have any advice re: timeframes, that way I can re-book in the next 45 minutes or so.

I'm in precisely the same scenario-interview date included! I have a flight home for tonight that I'm thinking will have to be changed...

FYI-I contacted Canada Post re: their cut off for deliveries of Xpresspost envelopes-it's 5pm EST... thought it'd be handy for you to know.

Here's to us both getting our visas today wink.gif

I just wanted to open it, upload the pic, and pop it back into its envelope for future use if necessary-not keep the cd-just the electronic image. I can just imagine having people over, a friend putting a cd in and boom-my lungs pop up... haha.

CanadaAmerican visiting Canadian girlfriend for a week
We did back and forth Ottawa/Austin visits twice each while our K-1 visa paperwork was on the go... Never had a problem-we stated we were visitng a friend (or friends), had our return ticket and that was that.
It's easy to go through, especially as you're being honest-you're going to Toronto to visit a friend. You have return airfare, that states your return to the US, and bang-you're in.

In my 15+ years of going to and fro across the Canada-US border, my one surefire MO that worked was the less one yabbers on to border officials the better.

yes-the TV marathons!

My personal favourite being the Hallmark channel and/or the WE networks' Golden Girls marathons... It's officially my backup thing to watch should all else fail when I turn the tv on...

CanadaThings you love/look forward to about America
- Access to a TONNE of awesome things the Canadian version of retail places don't sell... Pier 1 in Austin made me almost fall over.
- More of a variety of cars
- Lawyers... so many lawyers (haha)
- The varying accents
- The varying cultures---immigrants from all points of the earth are so much bolder and proud in the States. Love it.

CanadaCanadian Thanksgiving...Relatives coming over to the USA...
So else what should I do and/or shop for, or ask them to bring over?
Just do the usual Thanksgiving fare that most people do/you grew up with; from someone who often does dinnery things for our brood of bachelor friends, if food is there, people will eat! Should you be aware of anyone being a vegetarian, a veggie lasagna or something usually works (for the meat eaters too)

Any suggestions on how to make them feel more welcomed into the area (it's their first visit here)?

Take them on a tour in a car! Hit the usual spots where you're staying is known for.

What should I tell my Canadian visitors about visiting and bringing stuff over the border (they are traveling by greyhound/bus)? Are there any rules and/or restrictions for what to bring over (is there a website I can find this info, as I can't find such)?
This might be handy...just make sure they don't have a stockpile of Haitian animal hide drums... hehehe

Most importantly of all, enjoy and get you and everyone else super happy full!!

CanadaTiming of physical (Montreal)
I ensured that I had all of my vaccinations, etc.. up to date and on letterhead from my doctor months before even scheduling the medical.

I had my medical in Montreal (via Medisys) a week before my interview. I picked up the results the day of my interview at 7:00am, as my embassy interview was @ 8:00am. Worked out perfectly-I walked from the Medisys building to the Embassy in 10 minutes' time.

CanadaSo we're married now....verifying next steps
Congratulations on the marriage! You can never ever forget the anniversary with that date :)

To address your questions:
SSN number: It doesn't matter if you send your Adjustment papers before or after receiving the SSN. I got my SSN before sending my AOS papers, and it was fine. But at the end of the day, when you have (or don't have) the SSN has no impact on your AOS.

As for your Adjustment of Status: Might I suggest you use the thread at the end of this paragraph. She outlines EVERYTHING you need and why. I used it to a tee for putting together my AOS package, and seriously-it saves you a huge amount of research and/or questions.

Here it be:

CanadaMy Canadian Passport Expires in January 2011
Seeing as how my getting a new passport doesn't ding my GC scenario in any way, I believe I will indeed get my new one in person in the Fall when I go back up (in early October). I'm from and will be going to Ottawa, a.k.a. the nerve center of such Canadian governmentey things

Thanks for all of the replies and the best wishes! I really hope my stringent carefulness + all of the awesome info I pulled off of here pays off re: the AOS! :)

I just sent my AOS paperwork today (July 15th) to Chicago *happydance*.

That said, I was just wondering if someone has an idea as to what timeframe I should get my new passport what with my current one expiring in January 2011?

If I do get a new one in December-ish, does it/would it impact my AOS info, etc?

Any info would be greatly appreciated-thanks!

CanadaWhat are you watching?
I have a good, bad and ugly list... haha.

I've been watching Mad Men from the get-go, and it *still* has me enthralled. Other than that, I'm a fan of

30 Rock
The Office
All the Real Housewives series (that fits my "bad/ugly description up there)
Crime 360
The First 48 Hours
Biography channel when they have someone I like on there (yesterday's was Robert Johnson)
Chopped
America's Most Wanted... I can't help tuning in sometimes because I live here now :hehe:
Original Iron Chef
Futurama
Family Guy
Deadliest Catch!
I also like dorking out on the NASA channel

Other than that, I'm at a show, the art museum and/or the non profit place that I volunteer at!

CanadaAOS'rs...
whoa. So I had my biometrics appointment on Tuesday-it took less than 10 minutes, was fast and a super good experience. I then go to the airport to pick my friend up, and come home to an email from USCIS-that afternoon-telling me my EAD is being printed. Then comes yesterday, and boom-my Advance Parole is waiting for me in the mailbox. YAY.

Congrats Kimbear!!!

I just got an email yesterday stating that my stuff has been transferred to California... what's weird is what I bolded below--I already GOT my biometrics letter-the appointment is on Tuesday..

______________
On September 3, 2010, we transferred this case I485 APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS to our CALIFORNIA SERVICE CENTER location for processing and sent you a notice explaining this action. If you have filed an I-485, I-589, I-751, N-400, I-90, I-821, I-131 or I-765, you can expect to receive an appointment notice to appear at an Application Support Center to have your fingerprints and/or photographs taken.
