OK so what do I tick, able to work or not able to work?

Australia and New ZealandAustralian Beneficiaries - Packet 3 to Interview date

Unfortunately no you can't work, not without an EAD.

Someone discussed it ages ago and explained that although SSA documents state we're allowed to work without DHS authorisation, you will STILL get a SSN with "valid with DHS authorisation" on it. Apparently that had a lot to do with EAD stamps being given at the POE (which isn't done anymore) so the K1 could work. Someone else suggested it was because some states required a SSN to get a marriage (which someone else said was untrue or how else do people have "destination weddings"?).

ALSO, I think it had something to with, if you want, you can apply for an EAD now, prior to AOS and you would need the SSN to work using the EAD. You will need to pay the fee for it, and it only lasts until the I-94 expiry date which, depending how long it takes to arrive (with AOS it takes about 2 months to arrive), could mean you just paid around $300 for 1 month of work.

Really right now the SSN only allows you to go on bank accounts and health care stuff and other sorts of things that need a SSN. It's good because a joint bank account is thought to be good "proof of co-mingling". Once you get the greencard you can go back to the SSA and have the DHS Authorisation thing removed (which apparently is beneficial but I forget why).

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but at least you're here in the US and with your beloved :D YAY! (and in texas like me too :D.. though I'm leaving at the end of March.. woot!)

But what's with this 20 page document Visa Journey told me to print out that says K-1 visa holders CAN work, I don't get it! How am I going to get a SSN then?

Hey all,

Arrived in San Antonio and now Married, now trying to sift through the paper work, huzzah!

Will be popping in to Social Security on Monday to try and get a SSN, because I can't do anything without one! Now to work out if that document means I AM allowed to work or not. I'm thinking yes.

Thanks for all the help gang.

Now to fly out on Tuesday. Just saw the AOS fee, have no idea how I'll afford that!

The instructions say that they are supposed to issue the visa within 2 business days of the interview BUT they do get busy and delays occur sometimes. I too had my interview on a Tuesday and I didn't receive my visa until the following Wednesday.

If you don't see anything by Monday I'd send them an email

Wow I hope I don't have that problem, given I'm due to leave exactly a week after my interview!

I was surprised at the amount of waiting too! I wonder if they've got a backlog because they took time off over Christmas and New Years?

Also the "only Tuesday" idea means that we miss one week thanks to Australia Day.

That date does mean that my fiancee will be here for my interview day that's kind of cool.

yeah... but do you agree they're good pics otherwise? My skin almost looks freckle-free :D

They'd be good pics if they printed what the screen actually showed. Ugh, just so much effort for something so simple. It sucks that they've got the monopoly on this.

I think it will be an issue to be honest. Double check the photo requirements here: http://canberra.usem...20Checklist.pdf it says " Make sure photo presents full head from top of hair to bottom of chin; height of head should measure 1 inch to 1-3/8 inches (25 mm to 35 mm)"

Sorry. Looks like you'll have to go back again :( I paid $30 the first time 'cause I couldn't get it right :( I had mine taken in a photo booth (photo-me I think it was) because it was the only place that offered that size. Awesome thing was you could take multiple shots and pick the best. I've never taken such good pics. It's a miracle booth ;D

Dang, yea I used a photo me, was sure I had my head in the circle but it cut off the top! Have an old spare from my doctors appointment might scan that and print a copy on my photo smart otherwise it's the long trip to the shopping centre!

Hey gang, got my photos done, alas, it cuts off the top of my head, do you reckon this will be a problem.

As an aside, went to the cricket today, amazing, I'm going to miss that!

Just got my Police Certificate in the mail, will get everything done tomorrow and express post my P3 to the consulate tomorrow.

One complaint, it's totally bent and crumpled at the top, can't believe a document so important isn't given "do not bend" treatment.

Merry Christmas all!

Tinkerbell - I know about the Aussie store, I'll actually be in the Alamo City and live nearby that shop, it may be frequented, I got a bag full of packets of Tim Tams for Christmas yesterday, alas my fiancee had her gall bladder out earlier in the year so she's not supposed to eat fatty things, she may be happy to suffer the consequences for a Tim Tam though!

I concur about the Chocolate Vanessa. I love Houston though (DALE DYNAMO!), but I know it can be dangerous at times.

You've really solidified my thinking, I think it's helpful to just have my eyes open to such things. The not having a job thing is certainly worrying for me, I'm only 23 and the job I want is very specialised (youth ministry in the church) so I'm worried about that stuff, at the moment I have 3 days off a week and it's fine, Football Manager 2010 keeps me occupied, but I like working and resting 7 days a week is fine for one month but longer than that could be crazy.

As an aside we organised our honeymoon yesterday! Now I REALLY need that visa.

I got my email from the consulate about my Police Check mistake, they said I can either fill in the readiness form and tell them I'll bring it with me or send them the original, think I'll wait at least a bit longer I need to make sure I actually have the police check in time to take it to the interview, although given I have a 16 Feb entry it's starting to get tight.

As an aside I was able to pick up my medical results today, so yay, quick turn around 2 days!

Just printed out the big form, now to do the DS-156K then it's just the waiting game, for my medical & police stuff, woo hoo.

Should get this visa before 16 Feb, looks like my future wife will be in Sydney for my interview huzzah.

Nope, I'm just an idiot getting the numbers confused (it's like 35 here and it's 11.30 give me a small break).

Man this form freaking crazy.

OK anyone with a new passport, the one with the chip, figure out where it was issued????

Also, on the DS-156K do you have to actually answer the questions that don't apply?

Thanks Astrid just realised the checklist was on the bottom of that form.

Any idea on how to find out where my passport was issued from, it's not on the bio page these days!

Sorry to be annoying, I'm filling in my DS-156, what did you guys put as your Length of stay and purpose of trip? What's the appropriate term for "who's paying for your trip"?

I assume I don't have to say "yes" to intending to work given I don't have a job lined up.

So, I just realised, I should have put the US Consulate address as the address to send the police check to instead of my address. Is this going to ve a serious problem or can I just send it to them with my P3 or take it to the interview? I'm going to email Sydney about it.

As an aside I'm sorting my stuff into two folders (one for P3 mail & one to take to the interview) so what do I need to send them for P3?

So on the train home from my medical, was all pretty easy.

I saw Dr Waks, very nice guy, friendly, explains everything that is going on, goes through all the forms, works out the shots needed then gives you a standard physichal, then the shots. Then you have to go head up to Macquarie Street for the blood test & x-ray.

Dr. Millar (the other NSW doctor) is in the Macquarie Street centre where you have the blood test & x-ray so if you're looking for lack of walking, that's the place to go. If however you like something close to a train station, Dr Waks is super easy to find, across the road from Wynyard station.

It was all very quick (not painless as I needed 2 shots) and I hardly had to wait for anything (except that my bad timing saw Dr Waks out for lunch when I came back with my x-ray). As an aside, if you're on a private health fund, you can keep the reciepts for any shots you have and claim that back from your healthfund. I'll work out how much everything cost all up when I get home, I know the Consult was $209, everyplace accepts plastic so no need to worry about cash.

Congrats Astrid.

I've just gotten my police check done, far out that was a hassle, hope it all goes through well, Medical tomorrow and wouldn't you know it, I left an immunisation record at home (only megingacoccle), so yea. Had serology done, turns out stuff I REMEMBER having shots for I'm not immune too, so I think tomorrow will suck for my arm and my wallet.

Hoping I can get all the details of the medical & police check in the first week of January, wishful thinking I know, but hey there's always hope.

OK I'm seeing the Doctor on Wednesday, just got to double check, need my blood test results, immunisation records & photo?

Really need to do that police check might do that tomorrow, ugh I'm supposed to be entering the USA on the 16th of February, I'm getting worried.

Oh do they really need cash at the doctor?

For the Doctor - Three pics, all immunization history and blood tests to prove immunity, and if you have any ongoing conditions or recent surgery, documentation for that too. Also, your NVC case number and your passport.

Get on the police check quick, took me nearly three weeks to get mine back, and that was with me calling and harassing QLD police HQ.

Yea I'm going to go down tomorrow, just realised I have to actually do it at the closest to my house, which is super inconvenient but anyway. I'll have to go to a photo booth and get the photos before Wednesday.

Saw my GP today, getting a blood test for MMR & Hep B also checking for diabetes & my cholesterol (family history) while I'm there. We've also done a general query on immunity so that should show up that I've had all my immunisations smile.gif

Nice way to find a work around!

Do they charge in NSW? I received a bill for $177 from Qld Pathology. Would have been nice for my GP to let me know this before hand!

I don't think they do, I'll find out soon enough, can't remember getting a bill on my last blood test.
