Thanks! I will call the embassy tomorrow to see if they can give me the answers I am looking for. Good luck with Roxana's visa!

No, the docs do not have to be translated into english. Not sure about your question of getting the docs in Huaraz. Just call the embassy and ask. Call between 2 -3 for K-1 questions. I called twice and they were very helpful. My fiancee Roxana knows where to go to get all the docs in Lima if you need help.

We recieved a letter from the NVC stating that our petition has been sent to the Lima embassy today!!! Yay!!! I have a few questions for anyone who has already been through this process.

For the certificado policial, certificado judicial de antecedentes penales and certificado de antecedentes judiciales a nivel nacional, can these be done in the Departments or only in Lima? My fiance is from Huaraz (Ancash) and says there are INPE and Ministerio del Publico offices there. Does he really have to go all the way to Lima to get these?

For the birth certificate, I understand this has to be certified at REINIC, can this also be done in the department, or only in Lima. I have also heard something about the Ministerio de relaciones exteriores, do they need to stamp it also?

Last question, from looking at the forum, I am almost certain that these documents do NOT need to be translated into English but can anyone reassure me of this?

Thanks so much for your help!!

Typically it only takes two days but that is assuming you have ALL of your paperwork in order. When me and my husband (fiance at the time) went for the interview we were missing a police report and had to scramble around to get it. After we sent that in, it took a week for him to pick up his passport and visa from DHL. You are definitely cutting it close with the holidays because the embassy and any peruvian offices will be closed. If you can switch your flight at the last minute then just wait. No need to pay the money now when you might get the visa in time.

Good luck!!!

Looking for the experiences of those who went through the embassy in Lima, Peru...

The embassy website information says that passports/visas are available to pick-up at the DHL facility, 2 days after the interview. Is this true? What was your experience?

We gambled on this and scheduled our flight for 7 days out from the interview, but there is a national holiday and weekend included in that time frame. I know it is only a matter of $$$ to change the flight, but I am more concerned with not spending one more night without my wife.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionLIMA- information on police certificates
Thanks again! SO helpful! I LOVE this forum!!! :D

also, we did not have to pay $30 to get the visa page into the passport. its not really a stamp either, its a printed out sticker thats the size of the passport and its stuck onto one of the empty pages in the passport.
you will have to pay $5 for DHL to pick up your passport and drive it to the DHL office in San Isidro, which i find completely rediculous, but yeah, thats the only other fee to pay.

DONT forget to pay the $100 at the bank before the interview!! I almost did, and I had a very sad day when I figured that one out.
Our meeting was on a monday at 9:00am. I remembered that I hadn't paid, like the easiest thing on the list, the day before, SUNDAY, and had to try to find a way to pay it. I did eventually find an actual bank that was open on a sunday afternoon, which I take to have been some kind of miracle...

bmadeline,

Thanks!! Again, very helpful! One more question. Do all the police certificates need to be done in Lima? My fiance is from Huaraz (Ancash) and he says there are INPE and Ministerio del Publico offices in the department. Can he get it there instead of making an 8 hour bus trip to Lima?

Is it true that after you are issued the visa you have to pay $30 to get it stamped in your passport?

Congrats on your marriage!!!! I hope to be married by the end of the year!

hi lindsey and koki

the birth cert only needs to be stamped by reniec if it is from outside of lima. for example angel was born in abancay, so even though his birth cert said reniec on in, we still had to take it to reniec in lima to get it 'authenticated' which means they have to look at the city registrar's signiture and deem that it is authentic, then they stamp it and you are good to go.
if he was born in lima, and the birth cert is from reniec lima, you dont have to do that.
also, this can only be done at the central reniec in centro de lima, on jr cuzco, right off of abancay behind the poder judicial. we had waited in line for 4 hours at reniec in san juan de miraflores after being told we could do it there, only to get up to the window and be sent to the cetro de lima reniec. so just because its in lima doesnt make it the official reniec.
just more hoops...

i translated his birth cert, but they didnt need it, and we didnt have anything else translated.

that should be it, other than the physical medical results, evidence of your relationship and his financial papers.
if you are using an affadavit of support (i-134) you will need your last 3 years of tax returns plus any pertinant banking/stock/real estate information. i know that my income alone (non-existant, as i am a student) would not have sufficed, so my parents also submitted all of their financial info and they filled out an affadavit as well.

let me know if you have any other questions!
we got married yesterday. just hang in there, things will be ok. you guys are in the hardest part right now.
good luck!

That was soooo helpful!!! Thanks!!

We just got our NOA2 on Tuesday and I am trying to get everything organized ahead of time.

Does the birth certificate have to be stamped at RENIEC?

Do any of those documents (antecedents and/or birth certificate) need to be translated into English?

Other than the forms that come in Packet 3/4 and the antecedents and partida de nacimiento, anything else my fiance needs to prepare?

Thanks for your help!!!

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 JUNE 2011 FILERS
Review of citizenship interview at the Fairfax, Virginia office
1-4-2012

My husband and I had an 8:40am appointment and arrived at the office around 8:30am. There was a line outside waiting to get in and get through security. Once we were inside they told us to take the elevator up to the second floor. We handed the receptionist our interview letter and she told us to have a seat and our name would be called when they were ready. After waiting for about 30 minutes a woman made an announcement that the interviews were running behind. Apparently the metro was down or delayed so people were arriving late for their appointments. She assured as that we would be seen within TWO HOURS. The office opens at 8:30am and our appointment was scheduled for 8:40am so I'm not sure how many people they were trying to squeeze in before us! :)

After waiting for an hour my husband's name was finally called. I got up to go in with in and the IO immediately asked me if I was the attorney. I said no, I'm his wife. He said he didn't need me and I could wait in the lobby. We weren't sure if I would be allowed back but were hoping I could go. We brought all of our paperwork from the start of our K1 journey and I'm the most familiar with where and how everything is filed in our accordion folder. I handed the folder over to my husband and wished him luck.

About 20 minutes later the interview was over. He passed the test!! My husband said the IO was tough on him. Apparently we had checked several "no's" on the application when we should have marked "yes" and the IO wanted to know why. My husband said he asked him EVERY single question on the N400 to get his response. After that, he asked for pictures of us together (we didn't bring any) and proof that we live together (we didn't bring any). We were never told to bring any of this, only my birth certificate, our marriage license and his green card. My husband was able to root through all of our previous paperwork and found an old mortgage statement we had previously submitted and he accepted that. Then, the IO asked my husband for his license, which he handed over. Then the IO said it expired in September!!! We never received a notice to renew and I guess my husband never checked it. I was on the edge of my seat as my husband was telling me this story but was at ease because I knew he had passed. :)

Then, after that, the civics test came. He was asked:
1. Who is the president?
2. How many representatives are in the house?
3. Who is the speaker of the house?
4. Name one war fought in the 1900's.
5. He couldn't remember the last question.

He had to read, "Who is the father of our country?" and write, "The father of our country is George Washington."

He was then given a piece of paper that said he was approved and to come back at 1pm for the ceremony. We were SHOCKED that the ceremony was happening on the SAME day!! By this time it was about 10:30am so we left the office and went and ate breakfast. After eating we still had time left over so we went to Tyson's Corner mall to walk around.

We returned to the office and went through security and were seated by 1pm. Then, the IO called my husbands name. About 10 minutes went by and I was getting really nervous. I thought maybe they were doing the swearing in and weren't going to let me in. My husband came back and said the IO made an error on his paperwork and we were pushed to a later ceremony. We were told to come back at 3pm.

We were upset that we were made to wait but even more shocked to find out that there were multiple ceremonies on that day. We just waited at the office until 3pm. Just after 3pm they started calling people up to sign their naturalization form and pick up a packet. The packet included a letter from the president, an American flag, voter registration form and an overview of your rights and responsibilities as a citizen. We were directed upstairs and into the ceremony room.

The ceremony was supposed to begin at 4pm but didn't start until 4:30pm. We were told the printer broke and they were trying to get it fixed so everyone could swear in and not have to come back another day. Once the ceremony started, they played a message from the president, did the oath, played a music video "proud to be an American," we said the pledge of allegiance and they handed out the naturalization certificates. At the end everyone stayed to take pictures.

On our way out, they had a voter registration table set up. My husband filled out his form and was told he would get his voter card in the mail in about 4 weeks. We finally left the office at 5:30pm. We had been there ALL DAY. Next stop......celebration dinner!!! My husband is now a USC!!!!

This journey has been so long but it's finally over. Good luck to everyone still waiting! I wish you all the best of luck!

This is great news! Good luck with the studying!
I was wondering about the June filers! What happened to the other two DC people (cruzfreak and umdterrapins)??? By the end of this week, all of the DC May people will have finished their interviews.

Thanks Arlington! Where are you on the list? I'm not sure about the other two people....sometimes there is such a large time span between steps that they forget to log back in to update.

My husband has been studying a lot since he had biometrics taken over the summer. The book USCIS provided has been really helpful. I like to test him because it also tests myself! As a USC, I SHOULD know all the answers, but I didn't at first.

I went back and read through the thread since I last posted and everyone has received their oath ceremony on a different date. This is better because we'd like to have a few other family members attend since it's such an important occasion.

Are USC allowed back during the testing? I know my husband will be so nervous, I think it might help for me to be there.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionROC Interview

I am disappointed! Today I received a letter advising that we have an interview appointment. It is frustrating because we live in rural Alaska, having already had to spend over one thousand dollars for biometrics just for me ( involved staying in a hotel because of flight schedules )now we get to double the expense!!

OK rant over ...I was interested if anyone had any ROC interview experiences or advice to give?

Thanks

We had an interview too! My advice would be to bring as much evidence as you can and when you think you have enough, bring more! It's also good to over prepare. Also, look through VJ for some of the typical questions that they ask. My husband and I went over them together so we would be ready for anything.

Sorry to hear about your interview request Truffles! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Our interview was earlier this month. I hope we get approved before the end of November because we're scheduled to go on a cruise. Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionJUNE 2010 FILERS
My husband and I had our ROC interview on Friday, October 1. Our appointment time was for 9:15am. We arrived at 9am, went through security, showed our interview letter to reception and then were asked to go upstairs to the second floor. When we arrived, we handed over our appointment letter and it was time stamped. The woman told us to have a seat and someone would be with us as soon as possible. We waited TWO HOURS until our name was called! It's not exactly clear on how people are called back because there were several people who arrived after us that were called in before, so they must have certain immigration officers working on certain types of cases.

We were really nervous and began going over possible questions they would ask us to make sure the nerves didn't get the best of us. When our name was called the immigration officer (IO) greeted us and was very polite. We went back to her office. I should note that on our way back, I noticed stacks and stacks of papers and files sitting all around in boxes and even on the floor next to filing cabinets. Who knows if those are applications waiting to be processed or what they are but there was definitely a lot of paper!

Once we got to the office, she asked us to raise our right hands and swear to tell the truth. She then asked for our IDs (specifically drivers licenses, not passports). She had our file on her desk with all the paperwork from our initial K1 visa back in 2007. She started asking my husband basics questions - his first name, middle name, last name, etc. As she was asking these she was crossing off each item on the original I-751 document. She then asked for our address and my husband was so nervous he kept messing up on the street number. I couldn't believe it! I told him to just breathe, and explained to her we were both very nervous. She speaks Spanish and my husband's first language is Spanish so she asked him in Spanish but he couldn't get it out. That really aggravated her and she immediately became very rude. She turned to me and asked me for the address which I gave her. She continued down the I-751 first page and checked off that the rest of the information was correct.

She asked if we brought any additional evidence that wasn't submitted with the original application or with the RFE that we responded to. We did have additional evidence but before I could get that out she then asked for all the originals of everything we submitted so I began looking for that. But before I could get that out she then asked me for our complete tax transcripts (which I began looking for) and then for the past YEAR of bank statements (seriously? doesn't that seem to be a bit much?). There appears to be no "protocol" on what they have to ask you for or what they need to see. She kept flipping through our file and asking for things and asking for more before we even got out the first thing. It was very frustrating and made us feel very unorganized.

She got even more angry/rude when we told her we didn't bring some of the things she was asking for. We didn't have one year's worth of bank statements, only the past two months. We also didn't bring a complete tax transcript, just the first page that includes how we filed and how much money we made. She then asked for our W2's which we didn't bring either. The interview was going downhill VERY fast. She asked for credit cards bills/statements (we didn't bring). Maybe we were just under the wrong impression as to what to bring. I thought we weren't supposed to bring anything we already submitted so I didn't. A piece of advice to anyone preparing for an interview....bring everything!

We brought our wedding album with photos. That seemed to make her happy. She started flipping through the pages and removing photos to put into her file. I really didn't want her to keep them but I thought, what the hell, we can make more copies. If that is what she wants, I didn't want to argue. We also spent a lot of time creating a disc with photos of us together, photos with friends, etc from the time my husband arrived in 2007 until now. She told us she is not supposed to accept discs but she will this time and made a note of the photos that were included.

She left the room to make photo copies and then I remembered we didn't turn over the NEW evidence that we brought - an offer on a home we put in recently and a receipt for our cruise vacation in November. We also remembered that the interview notice said to bring 2 passport photos which she didn't ask for so she took all of that and placed it in our file. She said she would have to think about our case before making a decision which made us feel very sad, scared and uncertain.

I asked her what we needed to do in November when we left for our cruise if my husband didn't have his green card. She said, don't worry, you'll probably have it by then (which gave us some indication that she would approve us). So then I asked, well just in case we don't, what should we do? She said just to travel with the one year extension letter and we should be good. I also asked her is she would like us to mail in the documents she requested that we didn't have. She told us that wouldn't be necessary. (I was thinking to myself if it's not necessary to send them in, then why even ask for them in the first place?!?)

My personal opinion is that she was angry with us for not bringing/not having everything she asked for and she was annoyed when my husband slipped up on the address. Because of that, she decided not to make a decision then and there just to be mean and make us wait longer. Because she made the comment "you'll probably have your green card by then" indicated to me that she does plan to approve it but we will just have to wait longer.

Wish us luck and thanks for your support!

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionJUNE 2010 FILERS

1. Not all RFE's get an interview.
2. Unlikely. Most of the time, you are told that you will be informed weeks later.
3. They will still mail it to you.
4. Depending on what they send you after the interview, it will determine your next steps.

When your petition is adjudicated, it is categorized by USCIS into different risk levels. Even at the lowest risk level, I believe they are required to interview 10% of the petitioners. As long as you both show up to the interview, and if you are a married couple who is not marrying to evade immigration laws, you really have nothing to worry about. Keep in mind that although you are filing for the right reasons, USCIS has to deal with a lot of people who are fraudulently filing, and they won't even show up to the interview, because they know they will be caught.

I would recommend doing some searches for i-751 interview on this forum and see how others have prepared. The key things would be to make sure your documentation is in order (now is the time to order tax transcripts, get a join bank account, etc...) and relax.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the info and advice! I really appreciate it! I will do more research on the I-751 interviews and see what additional info I can come up with.

We didn't get any touches on our case after responding to the RFE or even after getting the interview letter. The last touch we have is from 7/21.

I was doing more research on VJ and it looks like it's pretty common to have an interview for ROC if you did NOT have an interview for AOS. Because that is our situation I'm not THAT nervous now.....but it's still pretty scary. :(

We got a letter today stating our ROC interview is scheduled for 10-1-10 at 9:15am. It looks like I'm the first June filer to actually have an interview. :(

I have a few questions:

1. Do all RFE's mean you'll get an interview?
2. Will we get a yes or no at the interview?
3. If the answer is yes, do we get the greencard there or will they still mail it to us?
4. If the answer is no, what are our next steps?

I'm pretty nervous about the interview. We weren't required to have an interview for my husband's temporary greencard. Any suggestions on how to prepare?

Thanks (and congrats to all the recent approvals!!!!!)

On Friday we sent additional paperwork in response to our RFE that said we didn't prove that we both share responsibility for most of the assets and liabilities. We included:

-Lease agreement
-Letter from leasing office stating we have lived and currently do live together
-Cell phone bill showing one name on bill and other other as an authorized user
-Electric bill with both our names
-Two affidavits from friends stating our relationship is real
-Our mortgage pre-approval letter

If for whatever reason this is not enough, will they issue another RFE and ask for more or will they just deny our case?

I'm really surprised that we are having difficulties with this! It seemed so much easier than the initial K-1 visa we applied for several years ago or my husband's green card!

it worries me now as we sent our 1 month bill too, car insurance cards, credit cards... we are staying in my husband's parents house + driving their cars as they live overseas so we don't have joint lease or car payments... can you see RFE on your USCIS account?

When I check our status online it just says that our case is in the initial review phase. It doesn't reference the RFE.

Doh! We got an RFE in the mail today! It says, "The evidence you sent is not enough because you don't show that you and your spouse share responsibility for most of the assets and liabilities of the marriage. You have not sent sufficient examples of shared assets and liabilities spanning the period of your marriage to show that you continue to share a life together."

Any thoughts or suggestions on what we can send? We already sent our joint bank account statement for one month. Should I got back and send a statement from the date the account was opened? We are in the process of buying a house so I think I will also send our mortgage pre-approval letter.

All of the utility bills are in my name with my husband as an authorized user. Do you think it would be helpful to send a paper that says this? I'm going to call each company to see if I can change the bill to his name. Typically it requires a credit check and sometimes a deposit of several hundred dollars which we are trying to avoid.

I'd appreciate any other advice or ideas. :help:

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionJUNE 2010 FILERS
Has anyone tried to check the status of their case by using the receipt number on the NOA1? We received our NOA1 last week but on the USCIS site it says our case cannot be found. Does it take time for the receipt number to be put into the system?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresAOS application from K1
I was wondering if anyone has run into this problem before:

When we filed for the initial K1 visa, I only used one of my fiancé's (now husband) last names. We never had any issues. His passport and visa have both last names on them. He opened up a bank account here in the States and that also has both last names on it. His social security card and our marriage certificate only have one of his last names.

Yesterday we went to the department of motor vehicles to get him a state ID and they wouldn't accept the social security card or marriage license because they were missing his second last name.

We mailed off the AOS application on Monday. I only put one last name. Does anyone think this will be a problem and we will get a RFE? If his green card comes and it only has one last name, will it be acceptable?

Thanks for your help!
