CanadaMoving tips...
If you choose NOT TO DRIVE for THE MOVE, and want to fly, is there a site that provides restrictions on what you can and cannot bring?

i know the NORMAL rules, but if they know its a MOVE, can u bring more? or is that when u just pay a fee for heavier/larger luggage?

just curious bc arizona is one hell of a drive from Toronto!

i'd much rather ship whatever i can with USP or whomever, and then fly with as much as i can - clothes and stuff.

i'm NOWHERE NEAR this stage, but just being nosy/curious! :P

CanadaUS Banking Vs Canadian Banking

I just wanted to get everyone's input whether there's a difference between US Banks and Canadian Banks and what these differences are...

For example:

-in the US, you can drive up to these banks and use vacuum tubes to conduct your transactions with a live teller... Don't see that in Canada!!!
-In Canada, I can walk into a branch and deposit cash through a teller and immediately go across the street to Tim Horton's for my coffee and use debit to draw on that cash... From what I've seen with my fiancee, she deposits cash and can't use it until it clears (usually a day), even though she deposited it through a teller.

Anybody else have any examples of differences between US and Canadian banks?

Thanks,
Scott

sometimes a hold is put on a cheque that is deposited that is a LARGE SUM....is that what happened with your fiancee?

CanadaFailed Medical??
Has anyone failed a medical, thus not being able to get their visa?

If so (and you don't mind sharing the story), can you tell us why you failed? was it disease related? physical pain/disablement? psychological?

thanks!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresK-1 Visa - if you don't get approved

Yes, you can reapply/appeal. But the reason for denial is going to have a great impact on whether or not it will do you any good to reapply. If you are concerned about a red flag its best to diffuse it as early as possible.

Exactly - that's why it's recommended you triple-check the grounds for inadmissibility before beginning your process. If your fiancee "fits" one of them, be prepared to file waivers and all kinds of 'fun' documents.- some VJ members have had dreadful experiences with this, including permanent life-time bans to enter the US. Sad and unfair perhaps, but true as taxes!!!
Good luck, L.

thanks - i appreciate it!

this why i am doing all my research now....i don't want to start anything until I myself have some type of understanding on the process. that said, i will most likely still invest in a lawyer, but will be very careful and be sure he/she is not going to make the situation worse.

it's strange - you'd think lawyers are the ones who will make everything go as smooth as possible, yet they are neglegent (sp??) at times. i hear it all the time. not fair at all.

well once again, thank you everyone for the prompt replies and information/advice.

I am not going thru any process yet, but am researching and was wondering what happens IF you don't get approved for a fiance visa? Can you re-apply if you're willing to spend the money and invest more time?

just curious.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresMarrying after K-1 is received

ok, thanks!

but one quick question - one time entry meaning even after we're married i can't leave the US?

One you have got married in the US you will need to file for AOS if you file after July 30th when you file for your AOS you will also get an Advanced Parole which will allow you to travel outside the US before your get your Greencard....

Once you have your Greencard you do not need anything other than your foreign passport and greencard to travel....

but you MUST get married in the US.....

Kez

perfect - that makes sense now from some of the research i've been doing....kind of cool when all the pieces fit together! i'm just in the initial stages (simply researching), and it was/is INFO OVERLOAD, but things are making sense now. this forum is wonderful - and so are the people willing to help!

Thanks!

Once a K-1 Visa is obtained, I understand you have 90 days to marry. My question is, "Do you have to be married in the United States? Or may you get married out of country? (ie) on the beach!!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresTHANK YOU!!
This may seem like a waste of space, but I had to take a second to THANK VJ and some of the members I have chatted with over the past couple of days.

I JUST joined the forum, and have never felt so welcomed!! That alone makes EVERYTHING seem less intimidating!! Ha ha ha!

I am not going to get into MY situation just yet because I am simply researching right now as a "just in case". I'd rather have some understanding of things beforehand, and have questions answered if need be.

Before I found this AMAZINGLY WONDERFULLY HELPFUL place, I was LOST, CONFUSED, STRESSED, etc... I cannot believe the amount of information and resources available to me here. And it is organized so perfectly - very simple to navigate thru. And even when I think I understand something, i hit a wall and get confused again. BUT, i don't worry or stress anymore becuase I feel comfortable enough to ASK QUESTIONS if I can't find the answers and feel I won't be looked down upon or frowned upon.

I thought I was the only one who had NO CLUE where to start! I felt (still kind of do) like an IDIOT for not knowing things!! But I soon realized I'm not the only one who may go thru this...so many people "might" or "are" or "have" gone thru it.

It's not only the information and resources available to me that I love, its the friendly advice/support too. And on top of all of that, the PERSONAL stories are so great to read!

AND, IF I don't end up going thru any of these processes, at the very least, this will be a LEARNING EXPERIENCE!

THANKS A BUNCH!!

Cheers to all!

G.

Your profile indicates you've applied for a K-1 already? Perhaps you're tired of waiting. If you go to visit, and decide to get married, you'd have to cancel the pending K-1 application, return to Canada, and start all over for a K-3. Not worth the expense, aggravation or indeed the further time apart in my opinion.

You can go down during a visit and decide to get married, but again, you can't stay and adjust status. You may think it's "impromptu", but you've already posted on this board that you are wanting advise or information about doing this, and that's illegal...to go down to visit and stay, when you've said this is a way that maybe you can be together sooner. So in fact, it's not too impromptu!

I'd wait, stick it out, visit when you can, and soon you'll be there!

I would think if you have no intent of marying upon entry, and you do intend to return as per your visa requirements, you should be fine.

However, I am not qualified to make such an opinion, so you should consult a qualified immigration attorney.

My concern would be "thinking about the possible marriage and researching immigration process" while you are not in the U.S. could possibly show you had intent to marry before entering...

yes, i agree...not worth taking that chance. and from what it sounds like, K-1 is quicker anyway. we've been apart in long stretches, so one more time would be worth the many years we'd be together!!

thanks again!

I think you mean "elope" not shot gun wedding. A shot gun wedding is usually when the girl gets pregnant and they get married because they feel they have to and not because they really want to.

I believe its a K-3 visa and that takes up to a year to get. I wouldn't go that route, stick with the K-1...its easier.

oops! my bad - i apologize! yes, "elope"! honestly, i didn't know that 'shot gun' meant what u said above. i just assumed 'shot gun' meant "elope".

thanks!

This USCIS fact sheet will help you out.

I Am a U.S. Citizen...
How Do I...Help My Fiancé(e)
Become a Permanent Resident
of the United States?

http://www.uscis.gov.../article/A2.pdf

Pay attention to the following section:

QUOTE
What if my fiancé(e) is already in the U.S. in another
status and we decide to get married now?

A fiancé(e) visa is only available to a person who is outside the U.S.,
or will be leaving the U.S. and then returning as a fiancé(e).

If your fiancé(e) is in the U.S. and entered using a visa other than
a fiancé(e) visa, and you marry, then you may file an I-130 relative
petition for him or her as your husband or wife. He/she may be able
to file Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or
to Adjust Status, along with your petition. For more information
about the I-130 relative petition, please see Fact Sheet A1.

If your fiancé(e) is in the U.S. and entered unlawfully, while you can get
married and file the I-130 for him or her, in most cases he/she will not be
able to adjust his/her status to that of a permanent resident while in the
U.S. In this situation, he/she will have to pursue an immigrant visa at a U.S.
Consulate/Embassy overseas.

And here is the link to Fact Sheet A1
http://www.uscis.gov.../article/A1.pdf

Best of Luck!

thanks!

And I should add, that entering the U.S. using a tourist visa or visa waiver program with the intention of marrying and staying in the U.S. may be construed as "unlawful entry". You might want to consult a qualified immigration attorney to get a professional opinion.

what happens if i am simply DATING my bf who lives in the US and i go there and we have a SHOT-GUN wedding and not tell anyone (ie) no plans, etc...?? can i stay there? or do i have to come back to Canada within a specified time frame?

also, in that case, which visa would we apply for? K-3?

basically, i want to know what is the best way to go about getting married so that we DON'T have to be apart?

thanks.

G.

ps: we were thinking K-1 option, but someone suggested a shot-gun wedding b/c then we don't have tobe apart - just want advice.
