Gabriela Silang is one of the few heroines of the Philippines best known for fighting with her Filipino people during the Spanish revolution. Born on March 19, 1731 in Caniogan, Ilocos Sur Gabriela, a meztisa was adopted by Don Tomas Millan when she was young. He was a very wealthy and known businessman and became her legal guardian He later married her at the age of 20. In their 3 years of marriage, Gabriela was not unsuccessful in getting pregnant. A few years later Millan died.

In 1757, Gabriela was wed to co-rebel Diego Silang who was also the groups’ leader. The groups’ goal was to free Ilocos from the cruelty of the Spaniards. Gabriela was a tireless warrior and without fail went with the Filipinos to give support and help with the battle. One of her husband’s supposed friends

After the unjust death of her husband, Gabriela took the lead of her husband to fight for the freedom and justice the rebels and people of Illocos deserved.

On September 10, 1763, Gabriela’s troops attacked the Spanish in Vigan but the Spaniards anticipated their advent. Gabriela alongside her uncle and 7 other members escape the attack and fled. A few days later, they were caught and were hanged in Vigan.

Her spirit and leadership lives on today. In 1984 a national women’s coalition was formed in the Philippines known as GABRIELA, the General Assembly Binding Women for Reforms, Integrity, Equality, Leadership, and Action. Women from all sectors such as ‘workers, peasants, urban poor, housewives, professionals, religious and students have participated from all over the country.

My friends,

Where in the Philippines are you or your loved ones from? We'd be thrilled to know. Also, please provide a monicker or description of your town, city or province, if you could.

We'll start with myself. I am from Santa Cruz, a town just south of Davao City, and otherwise known as the Investors' Haven of Davao del Sur because of so many big enterprises with situs here. My fiance in Corona, California was born and raised in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, the Spanish colonial pueblo that was originally named La Ciudad Fernandina by our Castilian founders, in honor of King Ferdinand of Spain.

How about you?

I am from manila and my husband is from New Jersey. Tukayo pala tayo lol...We are now living here in NJ.

Welcome to the thread, tocaya!

Hola Chicas! Buenas dias. Hey, guess what? They sell the boneless bangus in the Filipino stores in Vallejo. Thanks Senorita Teresita for these pictures. My husband always keeps Balsamic vinegar in our pantry. It's quite similar with Suka Basi. We use Balsamic vinegar in our Adobo. Wow, sarap naman ang boneless bangus na yan.

Hiya Marie,so Balsamic vinegar can be a replacement for vinegar?i only use that for salads,i love the Suka Basi from ilocos though...

To Mj and Marie, dios ti agngina kadacayo a dua. Diego Silang, Gabriela Silang & Elpidio Quirino must be very proud in their graves that we have remembered them!

Mj, I'm sorry that I had to let you to do a little homework yesterday. Marie, I think that your hometown of Alicia was named after Pres. Quirino's wife, Alcia Syquia Quirino. Am I correct?

From Wikipedia:

Alicia used to be the old town of Angadanan[1] until the new Angadanan was relocated in 1776 to its current location near the Angadanan Creek. Alicia is known for its old Castilian architectural church as tourists destination. Passing by Angadanan town on February 12, 1805, Fr. Manuel Mora, OP wrote that “Angadanan has a convent of bricks, though not totally finished. Its church is timber, wood and bamboo. The number of inhabitants is 791.” Fr. Tomas Calderon (OP) started building the present church that was inaugurated in 1849 and dedicated to the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, more popularly known as Our Lady of Atocha. The old Angadanan was renamed in 1949 in honor of then President Elpidio Quirino’s wife: Dona Alicia Syquia Quirino.

Here is more on my hometown of Laoag.

Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, the city's name meaning "light" in the Ilocano dialect, is located in northwestern Luzon, Philippines. It lies on the north bank of the non-navigable Laoag River, a few miles above the latter's mouth. Laoag was first occupied by the Spaniards in 1592 and is now the largest city in northern Luzon.

Ilocos Norte is best known as the home province of former president Ferdinand Marcos. The province has many old Spanish churches, the best known being St. William's Cathedral in the capital city, Laoag. There are a number of popular beaches in the province, including Currimao, La Paz, Seksi Beach, Pagudpud, the Saud Beach, and the Fort Ilocandia beach.

A fascinating feature of Laoag is the Tobacco Monopoly Monument, a memorial to the lifting of the tobacco monopoly by the Spanish government in 1881. The Sinking Belltower in Laoag is one of the tallest in the country, while the Acrobatic Belltower of Bacarra gains its name from the effects of earthquake damage.

Memories of the Marcos era abound the province, including "Balay Ti Ili", the ancestral house of the Marcoses in Batac, which showcases the memorabilia of the late president. Malacanang of the North, on the shores of legendary Paoay Lake, is now a museum.

Tourist attractions in Laoag include:

1. Sand Dunes - located in La Paz, Laoag City
2. Tabacalera Museum
3. Tobacco Monopoly Monument
4. Laoag Museum
5. Aurora Park - located at the heart of Laoag City
6. Rizal Amusement Park
7. Fort Ilocandia
8. Sinking Belltower - located at the heart of Laoag City
9. Raquiza Garden - located at the heart of Laoag City

Hi Besame,we've been in Laoag a few weeks ago and wasn't able to stay in fort ilocandia as the hotel rate is sooo expensive (5k per night)...so we decided to moved down to pagudpod and stayed at terra rikka beach resorts(in brgy saud)..the place is absulutely amazing is called the bora up north we then moved down to currimao after 8 days of stay in pagudpod and stayed at Playa tropical beach resorts, both places needs more developments though as pagudpod doesn't have closer ATM machines nearby and tourist people dont carry much cash in the pocket...

PhilippinesWhere's your hometown?
I was Raised and born in Apayao, but currently living in Quezon city...

Apayao is a landlocked province of the Philippines in the Cordillera Administrative Region in Luzon. Its capital is Kabugao and borders Cagayan to the north and east, Abra and Ilocos Norte to the west, and Kalinga to the south. Prior to 1995, Kalinga and Apayao used to be a single province named Kalinga-Apayao, until they were split into two to better service the needs of individual native tribes in the provinces
Apayao is subdivided into 7 municipalities

Calanasan, Conner, Flora, Kabugao, Luna, Pudtol, Santa Marcela

Apayao was among the earliest areas penetrated by the Spaniards in the Cordilleras, but the region, inhabited by the Isneg tribe, remained largely outside Spanish control until late in the 1800s. As early as 1610, the Dominican friars established a mission in what is now the town of Pudtol. In 1684, the friars again made vain attempts to convert the people and established a church in what is now Cabugao. The ruins of the early churches in Pudtol and Cabugao still stand as mute testimony to the failed attempts to occupy Apayao. The Spanish authorities were then able to establish the comandancias of Apayao and Cabugaoan in 1891, which covered the western and eastern portions of what is now Apayao. The comandancias, however, failed to bring total control and the Spanish government only maintained a loose hold over the area.

The Americans established the Mountain Province on August 13, 1908, with the enactment of Act No. 1876. Apayao, along with Amburayan, Benguet, Bontoc, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Lepanto, became sub-provinces of this new province. Before this, Apayao had been a part of Cagayan province. After being a sub-province for almost 60 years, on June 18, 1966, the huge Mountain Province was split into four provinces with the enactment of Republic Act No. 4695. The four provinces were Benguet, Mountain Province, Kalinga-Apayao and Ifugao. Kalinga-Apayao became one of the provinces of the Cagayan Valley region. On July 15, 1987, the Cordillera Administrative Region was established and Kalinga-Apayao was made one of its provinces. Finally, on February 14, 1995, Kalinga-Apayao was split into two distinct provinces with the passage of Republic Act No. 7878.

It may be no coincidence that the outline of Apayao (and the former Kalinga-Apayao) resembles a bust of a man akin to former dictator Ferdinand Marcos (looking toward his home province, Ilocos Norte) whom they called as the "Great Profile" during the Marcos Era.

Mother was originally from Pasuquin Ilocos Norte though...And hubby was born in Twin falls Idaho.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsFingerprinting
QUOTE (Auggie @ Jun 2 2009, 12:36 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi my fiancee and her daughter went through their interview in Guangzhou on the 19th of May and got their pink slip, hi hip hurray!!!!! Then my fiance waited for her Visa packet to arrive to Guangzhou post office, but what she got instead was a notice that she needed to return and have her fingerprints done over. So she went back on the 26th of May and got fingerprinted. Now it is June 1st and we have not seen anything in the Guangzhou post office as of yet. I'm wondering if this is normal? Or are we just 2 over anxious lovers? Should I be trying to contact the Consulate? Or is patients still a virtue? Any input on the subject will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Auggie & Lancy

Congratulations and happy reunion soon:) good.gif

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresAdvice on what Documents needed to smoothly immigrate to the U.S, petitioned by a U.S citizen Spouse

Greetings! First of all i would like to introduce myself, I am Andrew. In 2013 of last year ( right before the typhoon Yolanda hit my Wife's hometown, Baybay City,Leyte). We married, and are going on now about into our nine mth :) I had to leave due to not financially funding an extention on a tourist visa and now i am back in the states. Which is why i joined this forum. Yes, i am not a immigrant, but my Wife (a Filipina) is. We miss each other so much and suffer the distance like the rest of you. I lived and traveled to many places, Manila, Cebu, and Tacloban. My stay was extended for up to three months. I had planned to live and reside with my Wife but i failed to save enough for the one requirement needed, a bank acct with funds to prove i am not a financial burden. So i bring you up-to-date, I am now here in the U.S and she is in Manila. We are collecting the documents needed.

I have joined this forum to journalize my process for you all so that you too can get an idea of the documenting, process, and filing fees for your conveinance. The following is a recap of all i have collected and what we have paid a fee on.

January 2014. I had my Wife and her child, whom i have not legally adopted yet, travel by bus to Manila. Documents she had with her at this point in time:

Wife's Civil registry Birth Cert. (short form)           400P

Daughter's Civil registry Birth Cert (short form)    400P

Our Marriage Certificate Civil registry (not NSO)  1500P

Postal Id                                                                500P

As of May 2014. She collected the following from the offices in Manila required for her passports. We ran into a road block when we found out her postal id wasn't a valid photo id requirement for her Philippine's Passport. And we had to re-process her postal into her new last name from her maiden name. Why then do we need a new postal id? Read on and You'll find out.

National Statistics Office of the Philippines in Manila:

Birth Certificate of Wife (NSO) * warning...make sure its a "Long Form" not "Short Form"   550P

Birth Certificate of daughter (1yrs old) (NSO) *  "Long Form "                                             550P

Marriage Certificate NSO                                                                                                     650P

NBI (National Police Clearance)                                                                                           150P

New Postal id                                                                                                                       855P

Ok. So it is May 9th as i write this, our next step is to get the passports. From reading the passport website, we need one PRIMARY PHOTO id from a list which they provided and three SUPPORTIVE IDs from another list. We have two supportive docs already, NBI, the NSO's. We need now the Following to move to the next step..Passport processing:

Barangay Clearance            200P

Digitized SSS id                    5000P

To get the Barangay we can use the new Postal Id she has. Getting the Digitized SSS id is going to be our next challenge because we don't know what is in front of us on that, not knowing how long it is going to take. She has no other Photo ids besides her Postal and the Passport office and website won't take a Postal for a Primary id, at least this is what we have been told.

So that is about it for now on our process on getting our documents ready for her immigrant visa to the United States. On the Visa side, i am deeply reading and attempting to find answers of about how our marriage will be authenticated. What i meant by this, is that i had heard if your marriage to a alien is less than 6mths, the visa processing may or may not legitimize out marriage as valid. So i am searching and asking questions about what other documents or proof i can provide to further make our marriage valid. To those who have gone through this simular process on how i should validate our marriage further as proof indeed that we are married, please comment. I know this is a long read, but i wanted to help others and i hope you find this useful for reuniting with your  Relative or Spouse. I know far too well the how distance and missing of those you love can be. So be sure to check out my future posts here as i go through this process! Next post, we tackle the SSS id and Barangay Clearance, i hope all goes well ;) wish me luck!
