My fiance is coming on May 11, and I'm worried about the the same thing. I recently got cable, he's bringing his playstation, and I'm currently trying to figure out where jamaicans/belizeans play football in LA so that he can keep connected. School is a definite, community colleges have all types of job readiness and learning skills programs just to get him acclimated and possibly meet people.

SEAN IS NOT HERE YET BUT I WAS JUS WONDERING WHAT SOME OF YOU DID WITH THE S.O. WHEN HE/SHE FIRST CAME IM SURE ILL HAVE TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL RIGHT AWAY AND HE GONNA BE EXTREMELY BORED UNTIL I CAN GET A DAY OFF TO GET HIM SITUATED. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaNew to VJ
Seems like the paperwork is going through for you in a timely fashion so I hope it stays this way. Let me know if you have questions I just finished the K-1 process. Good Luck!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to VJ. I just sent in my K1 information on April 9th. It was received April 10th. I've been engaged for three years but we've been together for five. We both felt it was a good idea to finally finish this process and bring him to the US. So I'm looking forward to this journey. I'm sure I will have plenty of questions.

Well, I just wanted to introduce myself......

See ya

Hi all

haven't posted much on the yardie forum but just wanted you guys to know everything is going fine. quincy has been here going on 3 weeks. So far so good. it's great having someone next to you every night even if he steals all the sheets. He misses JA but is still happy to be here.

he got his SS# so he's currently looking for work

and we found a place where jamaicans play soccer in LA so for anyone who wants to know it's by Dorsey HS (La Brea & Rodeo) on Tues/Thurs around 8:30 pm

if any of your mates are feeling homesick consider subscribing to online jamaican radio stations. I did, so that he could stay up to date on music, news and sports. Irie fm is like $7.95 a month

We get married on June 21!!!!!
Then I have to file AOS papers. The fees would have gone up by then right?

My fiance is finally here on a k-1 visa and of course we have to get married within 90 days but we would also like to have an official ceremony among family and friends, in particular, his mother and brother, whom are still in jamaica. I am trying to figure out how long it might take them to get a tourist visa to attend the wedding so that I can set the wedding date with ample time for them to go through the process. Any ideas?

My fiance has his medical exam tomorrow and will be going to apply for his police cert., does anyone know how much it cost for express delivery? Mexico, Latin & South AmericaKingston, Jamaica K-3 Interview
i would not expect an interview letter any sooner than 2-3 months after you sent in the ds-230

Help! I am getting frustrated. :crying: I filed for my husband last November. We are still living in different countries. My problem is obtaining an interview. I overnighted the DS-230 (Part I) form. It was received 6 days ago. I even have a signature confirmation from Federal Express. How much longer we will have to wait to receive an interview date? I have to purchase a plane ticket, receive time off from work, etc. Please advise.

Frustrated in Atlanta,

Mrs. Scott

i don't know who will win but i doubt either will make a difference, the only reason i lean towards portia is to see how ja fares with a female in head office. i would also like to add that it is common for people to berate the government on their shortcomings which is rightly deserved but keep in mind that jamaica is not an easy country to run, in many cases you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. people are never pleased and that also impedes progess.

I am interested in seeing this book because patois changes everyday with new words/sayings that people use for a short period of time until something new comes along (i bet you next year you won't be hearing frass, sell off, or tek weh yuhself as much as you do now). The way my parents speak is not the way my husband speaks and sometimes they can't even understand him. I believe one has to immerse themselves in the culture to stay up on the dialect which is phonetically written so there is no standard. you spell it how it sounds to you for the most part. i personally listen to dancehall to stay on point.

I view patois as a dialect not an official written language to be found in textbooks like what the powers that be have deemed romance languages.

Meaning of dialect:
A regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech differing from the standard literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists: Cockney is a dialect of English.
A variety of language that with other varieties constitutes a single language of which no single variety is standard: the dialects of Ancient Greek.
The language peculiar to the members of a group, especially in an occupation; jargon: the dialect of science.
The manner or style of expressing oneself in language or the arts.
A language considered as part of a larger family of languages or a linguistic branch. Not in scientific use: Spanish and French are Romance dialects.

That being said like all other dialects patois should be respected and valid regardless of whether or not it is used in school or written in books or posted on threads. It encompasses a people, a history and culture that delves into the very definition of who they are, where they come from, what they have been through and how they relate

Ebonics which includes african-american dialects, patios, creole, etc derives from the nigerian/congo language/region, primarily a spoken language which does not use certain letters like r and h hence you will see people say sista instead of sister or im instead of him. These are languages that have been in existence long before any european languages and deserve respect and recognition. I find it insulting when anyone (jamaicans included) associate ebonics to being ignorant or unofficial because not found in books (in my mind that just because these dialects are black) and while important to know the Queen's English because there is a time and a place for everything, I do not condone conforming to it if that's not your natural way of speaking in an informal setting (like the yardie thread which in title itself is patois) or else when do you get to be yourself, too many americans go places and expect people to speak english instead of learning the language so i say learn patience and embrace how jamaicans speak in writing as you would if they were talking to you in person or would you not allow that if this was a phone thread?

i personally hate when jamaicans put on a twang to speak to me i find it fake and part trickery.

I want to thank each and every one of you for the advice that I was given. This thread and every thing I have learned from it was truely a blessing. It opened my eyes and and I am very thankful for it. There are alot of strong and beautiful woman here! And even though I am ending my journey you aren't going to get rid of me that easy, lol. I enjoy talking to you guys and reading Jawi's fabulous story! I still have a huge love for Jamaica and its people. And just because "D" wasn't right for me doesn't mean every man in Jamaica is the same. The tears have been shed and now I am at peace with my decision. So onto a new chapter in my life.

My hubby's bday is Sunday and I will be in JA with him. I am wanting to do something fun that day or at least go eat somewhere where he can get a surprise cake brought out to him and a happy bday song. Can anyone suggest a place in either Negril or Mobay.

Also if you have any other suggestions on a good bday excursion or idea for that day let me know.

Thanks wub.gif

There are so many places in Negril. Sweet & Spice, great food, good prices. There's a great little romantic place right on the beach called Mom's Place, very inexpensive. Kuyaba is nice, but expensive. Rock House is always really nice, but expensive. Great food at Norma's...yet expensive....went there for my birthday and my best friend surprised me when I got back from the bathroom, she had "hired" 3 guys from the beach to sing happy birthday. Roots has GREAT food and jazz night is on Sunday's.

How about the Wild Thing has a GREAT excursion to Rhode's Hall Plantation..includes snorkeling, horseback riding if you wanted to and a great lunch. There's also the zipline tour through Chukka Adventures. I love the Black River Safari with the YS Falls. I've been all over that area.....gosh and have done so many different things.

Hope that helps.

as far as montego bay, i would suggest the following

the restaurant next door to margaritaville or the jazz cafe (one these two may have that cake option)
or the casino across the streetor the brewery

there's also the dragon court by bogue but that's chinese food

wow after catching up for the past couple of hours, i must start off by commenting on the youtube video. i was in shock to actually see that because i never really saw open gayness like that in mobay. on a few occasions walking through town my gaydar would go off but this is a first for me. my hubby was like nuff of them got in trouble for that and he used to got to school with one of them and beat him up all the time ohmy.gif i think that there has always been a small underlying acceptance of homosexualty in jamaica, you can't be outright with it of course but they're family/communtiy members (like zeeks) and as long as they don't wear it on their sleeve, is like they can be around.

did one of you slip some of that vj water in my drink? apparently i too am pregnant, i guess we were trying but right now i'm in a state of shock that my life as i know it will never be the same. too soon but thinking ahead and assuming all goes well any advice on where to look for economical jamaican nannies in los angeles (i sense it will be like looking for a needle in a hay stack)

sonshyne thanks for the aos interview details, quincy is on my insurance but i guess i should put him on my bank acct, since he's not working i figured why do that, but i will now. as for the name change i don't want to change my name. i'm the last person in my family with my sir name so when i die so does the family name, do you think that's an accepatable reason to give them?

here's my story quincy is 21 and mature in some ways and immature in others but who am i to talk? he's from mobay, he knows your fiance by the way classychic77 (friend of a friend) and that's where i met him at a local rooftop party my cousin and i decided to go to on boxing day 2004 to relieve much needed stress from work and relationships. we acted a fool and had a ball knowing that nobody we knew would see us. in comes this guy with a huge afro like mine. we were the only two in there looking like that so he caught my attention from the moment he walked in. anyway after catching a break from all the guys trying to talk to us, he asked me to dance while i waited for my cousin to finish her drunken piss in the bathroom. without even looking at him i immediately said no and he was like alright then, which took me by surprise because i'm so used to them not taking no for an answer. at which point i did look at him and noticed that he was cute so i tried to redeem myself by complementing his higrade and asking him to share which he did but he wouldn't roll it so i was like damn he's kinda mean, which was intriguing to me for some reason. we ended up dancing anyway and exchanging numbers, i had it in my mind that it was just be a holiday fling and i would never speak to him after but i couldn't resist calling him upon my return to the us and started looking forward to seeing him when i would go to visit my parents. so we agreed to do the damn thing dec 2005 no romatic stories of engagement and now he's here. i consider myself lucky because thus far he has put to rest every fear i had about being in a relationship with a young jamaican man (money, cheating, age difference) and to think if that night his friend hadn't decided that he wanted to try to talk to my "brownin" cousin instead of me we would not be here today, i always poke fun at him about that.

to me that's scary, this is one of the fears i talk with quincy about all the time in planning for children. I don't want to be permanently attached to someone through a child who's going to still be acting like he's single while i'm stuck at home. i can't tell you how many times i run scenarios by him to see where his head is at. but you never can tell.

on the other issue i too would like to raise my children in the jamaican school system, so i'm trying to plan ahead whether to do primary or high school or both, i'm not sure if i can live there due to work reasons so i struggle with the idea of possibly having them live apart from me or board, but a part of me feels it worth it.

on the birth certificate issue, since quincy lost the extra one we ordered for the k-1 process, i had to unfortunately order the 6 copies, i ordered them in late may, but luckily i already had a b & w copy of one before and used that for my aos application because i didn't get them until mid-august and that was after i emailed them asking where it was at. and they had the nerve say they've been waiting to send it but needed an address (wasn't on the order form to begin with?) so i say if you can get someone to do it in ja and then have them bring it up/or mail it, i would do it that way.

I'm so sorry to hear this. You definitely don't need to go through this especially because you are pregnant. Communication is key in this situation because as far as you know he hasn't officially cheated and maybe you wanna ask "why are you displaying interest in another person and especially at a time like this?" I would let him know that it's not acceptable at all. Does he have other children? Has he been through this process before because if its his first he should be excited about the baby and about you having the baby.

nyseness, i'm in the same situation as you i'm already married but my mom has no idea although at this point i have told her we are going to do a courthouse marriage first then a ceremony in ja. i go back and forth on big and small weddings, but my mom and i decided that having a wedding at her house in jamaica was the best option: cheaper and no time restraints but i know deep inside jay, that just a courthouse wedding alone for me would be unsatisifactory i want to celebrate with my family and be a star for the day.

Donna and I are discussing this now. I believe we first have to marry before the AOS is filed. We are looking at a late October wedding date. The AOS would be mail soon afterwards. I mentioned to her that some people go to the courthouse and get married after arriving. Later they have a reception for family and friends. This would allow us to get the AOS in sooner. As women how do you feel about having your first marriage at the courthouse? I wonder if she would later feel cheated or bad about doing this. Is it worth saving this time by having a courthouse marriage? I would like a women's perspective on this.

We didn't have a big wedding; we got married in Jamaica in our pastor's office on a Thursday afternoon. We preferred to save the money we would have spent on a wedding for something else. The plan is to have a nice celebration for our 10th anniversary.

I love the idea of a park wedding if she does not want to go to the courthouse - great idea, luvtravlin

We also got married in the pastor's office. Although I love being married I do feel cheated a bit. We want a "real" wedding so we will do it once he arrives later on in front of friends and family. The date won't be set until he arrives. My mom is already gushing over it and she has nooooo idea we're already married!! no0pb.gif

whew, I had to catch up since i posted my homesickness saga. It was great to read all the responses then I didn't feel so bad after jengles and some others mentioned the rules and what not. After losing sleep that night things were back to normal the next day. I think it was just a spell of homesickeness/bordem/detox/rules. i know that he didn't have his daily dose that day, and he wanted to be in nyc at eastern parkway cause some of his friends/family were there and la was virtually dead and hot labor day weekend. so we talked and he knows that giving up on the process would be stupid on his part but eventually we both plan to return to ja it's just a matter of when. i had to laugh too about the rules thing cause he definitely pees on the street or wherever he can (that boy always has to piss), litters, drinks in the car/street, and questions why i don't just park the car in the alley.

i did anticipate this homesickness before he arrived and tried to set things up for him like where jamaicans play soccer, going to adult school and going to dancehall parties, etc but he didn't take to it for some reason. he can be moody: sometimes he wants to go out but most times not. so i don't force the issue. i told him before he left ja that america was no bed of roses or promise land that he thought it was but i don't think he believed me. now he's seeing it for himself. there are small luxuries in jamaica (that i experience) like people can be poor/unemployed but still eat dinner every night and have a roof over their head, there's always someone stopping by your yard to talk, or you can just go to the beach whenever, the latter two i know he really misses.

so things are good now til the next spell (thank god for playstation). we discussed the idea of moving to ny but i want him to experience a winter there before i do that. hopefully his AP comes by October then we can be in ja for christmas because i think both us would be depressed if we had to spend it here. xmas in ja is so nice.

Hey, Kel.

We talk via PM and you know I adore you; but I am going to argue with your comments just a bit here.

Anyone reading this now who has questions......keep those warnings about Jamaican men in the back of your mind; but they do not pertain to everyone. Kelly is talking about her own experiences and I do believe how hard they have been on her. She is a wonderful person for putting up with all she has.

Andre is not like she describes Craig to me. Oh, sure, he has his issues. But, he was never a playa of any kind and because of that, I do not face any of those kind of issues. Honestly, if I did, he would be gone cause I just don't put up with that stuff. I don't have maturity issues with him. And, he was raised to respect women. In fact, I argue with him that he gives his mother too much respect and benefit of the doubt (That is a whole 'nother story!)

The rules.........Oh, how you brought a smile to my face. We argue that issue all the time. What I do with that is say stuff like......"remember how the Holiday Inn laid you off whenever they felt like it, without warning" or "fired so and so without warning" or..............whatever I can think of......well, they can't do that here. There are laws. I do my best to explain why we have certain rules....pertinent to what he is used to in JA. And, of course, I agree with some of the stupid rules no one will ever understand. He gets it then.

How about peeing in the yard, Kel? Did Craig try that? Or walking down the street with the machette?

good.gif I totally agree. Although Damien has been here almost 3 years...he is still "adjusting" to the American lifestyle -somewhat. He's always joking about going back to JA because of the rules and manners we follow. We are also still adjusting to being married.....marriage is about compromising.

Damien is probably one of the youngest husbands on here yet he is very mature. I don't have the time to "mother" a grown man. And we respect each other....we wouldn't be together without respect.

Yes, we have issues but nothing major. I have been nothing but honest about our relationship and share our story to everyone who wants to hear.

I am a bit nervous about the young age and the adjustment.....although very mature...still young. I may PM you as to know what were some of the hurdels you encountered that mostly came from the age issue.

No problem good.gif

hey yardies:

I don't post much but decided to get my frustrations out with you guys, my hubby (in us on k-1) is extremely homesick and contemplating foregoing the whole process. he feels he's not cut out for this place (LA in particular usa in general), a part of me feels that this shall pass but at the same time i feel bad for him because i miss ja too and i didn't even grow up there and i feel there's not much i can do at this point to make him feel better until his AP comes through besides have him visit NYC where there's more things jamaican but he's not feelin that either he just wants to go home. advice?

i'm kind of in the same situation, i didn't want to tell my parents/family because i know the overall sentiment would be i'm making a mistake or being used, but i couldn't hide that he was living with me so they think he's here visiting and i've told them we plan to get married next year in ja (which we do) but of course we're already married.

So now my parents what to come visit me...after living in my house for 1.5 years....THE SAME WEEK AS THE INTERVIEW......AWHHHHH. So now I have to break it down to my mom. My fiance and I said that we didn't want to get anyones hopes up so we are keeping the process a secret as much as possible. His family and my family knows that we are filing...but don't know the particulars. It's stressful enough for us and to have them asking about each step....  :bonk: Would drive us crazy. So I'll have the conversation with my mom tonight. -_-

Question....why can't they just give the visa at the appointment? What is the purpose of sending it via courier? Any words?

Oh, honey.......do you not know the way things work in Jamaica by now? Soon come!!!!

That's so funny

Everything is me soon come.....lol.

Wow we are filing and trying to keep a secret as well. The only difference is NO ONE knows. I guess he is just going to show one day
I told my mom that he is filing for a visiting visa and he has a hook up down there. I think I am going tell her eventually but we didn't want the stereotypes placed on us and the big hoopla until we were able to do how we want it. In Jamaica! So we are going to do something small and then later go ahead and do our real wedding down there. I have a lot of family there and all of his family is there as well. Lets hope things work out.

In regards to phone service/netspeak, I heard about a service called mega phone (i believe it's a cell phone) and you pay a flat fee (1,200 ja?) and you can make unlimited calls to the us

:ot:

I remember sometime ago someone mention a VOIP w/unlimited calls from to and from JA. I already looked into Vonage but I could have swore it was Cable & Wireless. Well I've been trying to search and came up w/nothing. Basically I'm looking for a service to get that plus a JA # if possible ASAP!!! Any suggestions???

It's called Netspeak (www.netspeak.com) and it's through C&W...My dad has it in Jamaica and he has a local florida number. I know that they have a local office here in Florida: http://www.netspeakflorida.com/

I was looking into that but Javon doesn't have internet service at home. He's looking into how much the internet cost down there but I personally don't think it's worth it.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionJamaican Fiance Question and advice needed?
It may be easier for you to fill out the ds230 part I for him and mail it to him (global priority) so that he can then mail it to the embassy (make sure hesigns & includes a copy of the first page of his passport).

you can also email the embassy and request that they resend the packet but jamaican mail is slow and undependable, so they may have mailed it before and it was returned.

I WOULD ADVISE YOUR FIANCE TO CHECKTHE MAIL AT LEAST 2 X A WEEK BECAUSE SOMETIMES THINGS ARE JUST SITTING THERE AND THEY (POST OFFICE) DON'T REALLY CHECK.

The same thing haapened to me.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionJamaica Embassy
I would advise your fiance in Jamaica to check the mail on at least a weekly basis. I received approval from the NVC in September 2006, the Kingston embassy sent out the interview packet sometime in Oct 06, but they do not inform you when they do this, so it's best for your fiance to check the mail often. In my case the packet was returned and had to be sent out again. Also once he does the paperwork to get an interview date, I would advise your fiance to continously check because we didn't get our appointment letter until 2 days before the interview! Jamaica mail is slow and unpredictable. You can email the embassy to find out whether or not they sent out a packet yet at: kingstonivinfo@state.gov
