Mexico, Latin & South AmericaHELP!! Medical May be too Late for Interview
QUOTE (ontheedge @ Dec 30 2008, 06:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Help Me Yardies!
My hubby had his medical done today in Mobay, but he was told it might not be ready for the Jan. 12 interview date.
We scheduled the medical as soon as we got interview date. They knew about our interview date, but still gave him a Dec. 30 medical.
Now they're saying they would need 14 working days. I can't believe this will derail our plans. After waiting for almost 14 months, we might have to reschedule the interview!! Can't believe it! crying.gif
Any advice would be great.
-Karen

This exact thing happened to me. I just explained at my interview the problem about the medical they just gave me a letter telling me to send the medical to them as soon as I got it and if everything was fine I would recieve my papers to move with in 14 days. I sent in the medical but it took them 30 days to process it but other then that it was not a problem.
Good luck to you also.

CanadaQuestion re: 2 photos for interview
QUOTE (jedinite @ Oct 6 2008, 02:02 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I got mine done at a local CAA location, they asked me what size I needed and I didn't know at first but the girl behind the counter was able to go online and do a search for me. She was so helpful and she saved me a trip. I sent my photos in with my DS-230 so I hope they have it at the interview. I'll probably get another pair of photos just in case. Oh and it was cheap, only $12 for the photos, free if you have Premium CAA membership. I have an AMA membership so I don't think it's free unless I'm in the US taking the photos.

I just asked for 2 passport photos for the U.S. I went to Japan camera and they made up for me..no problem. I went for my interview yesterday in Montreal and also had already sent 2 in t the NVC. I also took 2 more just in case but there was no need as they had the ones I had sent in with the paperwork from the NVC.

CanadaQuestion on the interview questions
QUOTE (Pandora01 @ Oct 7 2008, 12:14 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Ok, my interview is in a little over a week. I'm doing my best to stay as calm as possible but it's getting harder! laughing.gif

I do have a question though. When they ask you for a date during the interview, how specific do I have to be? For instance, let's say they ask me when my fiance got his divorce. Can I just say 1988? August 1988? Or should it be as specific as August 10, 1988?

Also, should I know by heart absolutely all the dates mentioned on all the forms? Dates of studies, moves, marriages, divorces, birthdates of ex'es, etc.

All those dates are swirling in my head wacko.gif and I'm getting worried I might mix them all up and screw things up for us.

I just came back from my interview in Montreal yesterday. If your not sure about something just tell them and give an appoximate date but let them know that your not 100% sure...do not ever lie to them...relax they are very friendly in Montreal just be honest and up front with them...Good Luck!

If you scroll down to the part about EI in the States from Canada, it says "you must
be legally able to work in the United States". Does that translate to SSN and EAD or
just SSN?

So does this mean that I can just quite my job and move to the U.S. and as long as I can prove that I can legally work in the U.S. collect UI??

CanadaPreparing for medical
QUOTE (CHD @ Oct 17 2008, 02:45 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I got my interview date today and am now scrambling to make sure I get my medical arranged in plenty of time. Based on the reviews I've seen, I plan to use Seiden in Toronto. For those who have used the same office, how long after you called were you able to get an appointment? My regular doctor takes a month or more to get in so I'm a little panicked that this might be similar.

Also, if I am able to get in relatively quickly, do I need to have my interview letter to get in? Their website states "Appointment letter or other instructions that you received from the U.S. Government or your legal adviser that show your alien/case number", so I was thinking I can maybe bring either the receipt from my online IV fee bill payment or the barcode cover sheet for the DS-230...but before I count on that I'm interested to know if anyone else has had a problem presenting something other than an appointment letter.

Seiden in Toronto was great! I called on a Friday and they wanted to know if I wanted to come on Monday or Wed of the following week which was great. I went earlier this month. I didn't have my letter but my sponser faxed me their letter and I used that. I got my xray at that location and did not have to go anywhere else. Very nice/helpful people work there as was the doctor.

The whole thing was fairly easy even though it was kind of nerve wracking. I'll post a complete review a little later, right now I've got a whole bunch of people to call and write to let them know about the good news.

Just curious to know how much time was spent at the consulate on interview day and was the appointment on time? My family has an 830 am interview on the 16th... I'm trying to coordinate travel plans.

Happy Holidays!

I got there 6:50 am and there was already a lady and two kids waiting. I got the letter A so I was first to go but I didn't get out of there until 10:20 am due to computers being down. There are vending machines there if you want a coffee or a snack so take some change (I didn't and wished I had). Good Luck and all the best in 2009!

CanadaBest way to request interview date?
QUOTE (CanadatoUS @ Dec 29 2008, 03:05 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Does the NVC or Montreal Consulate schedule the IR-1 interview date? I have my DS230 ready to mail, but have been holding on to it because I would like my interview to be in early May 2009 if possible (due to work reasons). Who would I contact to request for that (before they even schedule the interview)? The last thing I want is to be given an interview date before May, and then having to wait months to reschedule. Do they only schedule interviews a month in advance? Or can they possibly schedule me for a May interview in Feb?

Any tips? Thanks in advance!

It took Montreal two months to set my interview date (then I only got 3 days notice of the interview) and another month to send my passport to me. My passport visa does not expire until June 09. So I have until then to move into the states.

I know he has to claim his RRSP in the US in the future, no biggie...but is he even allowed to keep paying into RRSPs as a non-resident? And does this mean he has to file Canadian taxes forever?

Did you ever get an answer to this question?

CanadaSO's parents are getting divorced.
QUOTE (HannahP @ Jan 9 2009, 05:57 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I know, it's not exactly visa-related but the people I trust enough IRL to give me advice aren't being terribly helpful. :/

When we went back to Canada for Christmas, his parents announced that after thirty years of marriage, they were getting a divorce. She even has an online boyfriend from Portugal who I guess is immigrating to Canada to be with her (? he looks like Fabio, btw).

My husband was crushed. He's the oldest of the kids and I think he still remembers times when his parents actually seemed to like each other. Although he admits that his parents haven't physically touched each other in a loving manner in nearly a decade. When I first met them, six years ago, it was painfully apparent to me (I come from an overtly dysfunctional family) that the marriage wasn't going to last. But my hubby has this myth of his parents' marriage built up in his head -- they were ALWAYS going to stay married, no matter what, the tension was always due to "something else" like his mother's work schedule or his younger sisters. So yeah, he took it pretty hard.

I feel kind of bad because I couldn't really find the /sympathy/, although I certainly have a lot of empathy because my own parents are divorced. The kids are grown, their divorce is amiable... it's just something that I've been expecting for years now.

He won't really talk about it. But he also, slowly, seems to be understanding that it's for the best. Especially for his poor, hen-pecked father. NOW he's moved on to being very clingy to me, very upset when I don't want to have sex with him. He's asked me quite a few times "We're not going to end up like my parents, are we?" and I don't know whether he means divorced or in a terribly unhappy marriage for many years. I'm doing my best to be very loving and reassuring, but it's simply not getting any better. He doesn't really seem to want to have an in-depth conversation about our future or about how he's feeling over the divorce, shuts down when I try to bring it up.

I just...don't know what to do. Does it just take time? Should I try to impose some realism into how I answer him, "I don't know if we're going to be married forever but I love you very much?"

That's too bad but it happens lots. I know I was feeling mighty bad when my wife up and left me ( I didn't even see it coming) and it takes along time to get over it but I did. Your husband will get over it, you just have to give him some time. He must do what I do...don't talk about it and hope it goes away ( I know ladies..believe me I know) and as for what to say..all you have to say is stuff to reasure him.."hope we are married forever". Nothing can be for sure any more. Good Luck

From my fiance smile.gif
Dear fellow Canadian VJ members,

My doctor retired some years ago and he had all my immunizations records. Does anyone know if there is a public record of these in which I can retrieve them from?

Also, has anyone in Toronto had trouble getting an appointment with the consolate-appointed doctor? What is this doctor like (personality wise) and did you ever have issues with him/her?

Thanks for your input!

I had no problem at all with Dr. Seiden's office. Everyone was very nice and the medical went right along. No worrys. Just be at the office early in the morning. First in...first out and it gets very busy.

I just went to the local RCMP office and they did a Canada wide search. I had a problem at my medical but went to my interview without it. They said just send the medical with your passport when you get it, which I did about 3 weeks later. Two weeks after Montreal got the medical and passport I had my passport back. No Problems.

[quote name='YYZLAX' post='2791574' date='Mar 31 2009, 07:37 AM']MORE QUESTIONS FOR THE BIG DAY!

1. Do I fill in the mailing label for the Xpresspost envelope before I submit it? At least the TO: area? Or will they do it for me? Or give me a chance to fill it out? What do I write for FROM:?

I waited until I was at the Consulate to fill it out. But I was dumb and forgot to write down the tracking number. Make sure you keep a copy of that so you can check when your visa is in the mail. You can probably just put your information on the To: part, but I'd wait for them to write in the From: part since they may have a particular mailing address that they use.

Cat is right..don't fill out the FROM part, only the TO part. I filled out both and took the copy so I would have the tracking number...that did not go over well and they let me know it. They ended up covering up the FROM part with white-out and putting in another address..opps

Good luck!!

CanadaPassport question.
Relax...there is alot of great people here that will help you through this.

I do know the envelop is large and that because they send all your papers and passport back to you after the interview so you just put your address on the TO: portion and they will put their address on the FROM part. Just remember to write down the tracking number, so you can track it on the Canada Post website.

I went 6 months after it was issued to me however I arrived at U.S. Immigration to activate it and I was 12 hours late..it was the day after..June 16th had to activate but I arrived the morning of June 17th.

I was talking to my lawyer about doing the exact same thing and also U.S. Immigration they both told me that when I activate I am moving to the U.S. Should I continue to work/live in Canada to make sure I put that on my U.S. tax return but my visa could be in jeopardy as I did not take up residence.

The whole thing is mute anyways as I showed up 12 hours after my expiry date...so here I am in Canada with "Cancelled Without Predudice" stamped on my visa...in case anyone wonders what they stamp on an expired, unused visa. Needless to say I had some explaining to do to my loved ones....

and the only real downside to working in Canada while living in the U.S. is that there is a higher likelihood that you'll have to pay taxes in both countries.

I do believe that there is a tax treaty preventing the paying of taxes on both sides of the border. I think they would only pay tax to the U.S. as that is where they would be living. Must be someone on this board that would know for sure.
