United KingdomPASSPORT RENEWAL
Is it safe to assume that I don't need countersignatures then? And, if so, is it also safe to assume that I don't need to send in ID evidence such as birth certificates, etc.?

Another question springs to mind: Do I need to produce a marriage certificate - or copy - to prove that I am now of married status?

Thank you,

Steve

United KingdomPASSPORT RENEWAL
I have a couple of passport questions. I am a British citizen living in Indiana. I need to renew my passport - it expired on August 8th. Do I need to get the form and photo countersigned for a renewal? What kind of documentation do I need to produce for renewals? The only difference to my circumstances since my last passport is that I am now married.

Thank you,

Steve

US Citizenship General DiscussionNew Citizenship Test...
From what I have heard through the grapevine, the new test will be finalised towards the end of January 2007, and will be implemented the following January. That probably means that I will be tested with the new procedure. In three months time we will all know. There doesn't seem to be an awful lot of information about it on USCIS at the moment.

US Citizenship General DiscussionNew Citizenship Test...
Can anyone give me any feedback on the new citizenship test. I will be filing my naturalization papers next August, and would be interested in knowing if the new testing will be active by then. I am assuming that my interview will probably be held in February 2008 sometime - although, you never can tell with the USCIS.

The other thing I needed to know was about the new booklets. The USCIS were supposed to be printing new booklets for the new tests this summer sometime. What is the position with that?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

US Citizenship General DiscussionBreaking News...
Sometime "during this winter," ten cities across the United States will begin to administer the new format of the citizenship examination for volunteers seeking naturalization.

The stated goal of the new format for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) naturalization exam is to make it more meaningful and less focused on trivial information.

For example, being able to demonstrate knowledge of voting rights and English language will now have more emphasis than which State was admitted as the 49th State, the colors of the American flag or who wrote the Star Spangled Banner.

The pilot program will continue through 2007. More cities may be added, but the new format should remain voluntary until 2008, when it should have been finalized and will become mandatory for all applicants.

The new exam will be given to volunteers beginning this winter in Albany, N.Y.; Boston; Charleston, S.C.; Denver; El Paso, Texas; Kansas City, Mo.; Miami; San Antonio; Tucson, Ariz.; and Yakima, Wash.

The current test is heavy on historical facts, including non-critical questions such as the name of the form used to apply for citizenship. The new exam will ask about the Bill of Rights and the meaning of democracy.

"The idea is not to toss up roadblocks, it's to make sure people who apply for citizenship and want to become citizens understand and adhere to the values we have as a society, the values that are part of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights," said Shawn Saucier, spokesman for the Office of Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The current exam doesn't guarantee knowledge of those values, Saucier said. A person may know which state was the 49th to be added to the union, for example, but not understand voting rights, he said.

The portion of the citizenship exam used to test basic English reading and writing skills also will be changed to include civic vocabulary words, Saucier said.

So, what will it look like?

Officials will test 125 new questions on 5,000 people, eventually narrowing the group of questions down to 100, the same number that can be asked on the current exam. To pass, immigrants must correctly answer six of 10 questions given. If they fail during the trial period for the new format, they will be given the option of taking the old test.

The general idea of the test will not change. There will be 100 questions that a potential U.S. citizen might be asked, but during their examination only ten are actually asked. It will remain an oral test, requiring participants to speak their answers clearly in English.

The questions and answers will be publicly available and are expected to draw on concepts in the nation's founding documents, such as the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

The changes could make the exam more difficult for some people, said America Calderon, the program manager at the Central Resource Center, a Washington, D.C., organization that offers citizenship and other programs to Latino immigrants. She guessed it also could push more people into formal classes, instead of trying to learn the information on their own.

All U.S. citizens - not just new ones - could brush up on their civic knowledge, said Roger Clegg, president of the Center for Equal Opportunity, a conservative think tank that supports the assimilation of immigrants.

The USCIS is expected to call for a substantial hike in the $400 citizenship application fees.

More details of the changes are expected to announced publically on 29 November.

Historians with the USCIS explain that one of the goals of the test throughout American history has been to try to determine whether a potential citizen feels "attachment" to their new country. Previously that has been interpreted as demonstrating knowledge of the country. The purchase of war bonds and participation in wartime recycling have also been seen as proof of attachment in the past.

Canada offers a test similar to the current U.S. one, and Australia is currently debating the implementation of their own citizenship test - reportedly with at least one question regarding the sport of cricket.

Other Western nations are also requiring tests or are in the planning stage. The Netherlands shows a video featuring gay men and beach-going women to ensure that newcomers will be comfortable with the country's liberal social mores.

The changes in the US bring the test closer to the notion sweeping Europe that gaining citizenship requires subscribing to a set of shared values.

US Citizenship General DiscussionInterview ID Question...
My application date for citizenship is August 6th. My British passport expires August 8th. My question is, am I going to need my passport as ID during the interview? I have left the US for only three days during the last eight years - and two of those days were spent partially on US soil. Am I going to have to renew my passport, or can I wait until after the Oath and just apply for a US one?

Thanks,

Steve

QUOTE (Danu @ Jun 22 2009, 09:54 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
A relationship is all about gives and takes. Especially for this process it is about planning. My Fiance did the application costs, I will be doing my medical and visa costs, he will be covering my AOS because I am paying my moving fees. That said, when he got mugged I was ready to jump in an pay the application costs, I've now lost my job and he has offered to help pay moving fees for me. Its about us and our life together, we both know that one or the other may have to pick up the other one financially at any point. As LiLMermaid said though, you are agreeing to support him once he is here, and he won't be able to work for at least 3 months. You really need to talk a plan out with him about how your financial situation is going to work out. If you can't do this and you don't feel you love him, I would say its time to look at if this is really what you want to do.

In a relationship that will last you need to talk about everything, even uncomfortable subjects. If you can't talk about and come up with plans about things like money your life will be very hard, especially as a mom. You owe it to yourself, your kids and this man. Seeing as you just filed a short time ago, I would sit down and talk to your fiance, see if you can come up with some plan about the money, not just for the short term, but also for long term plans, and talk to him about how you are feeling...that because you have the kids you need to make sure that they are taken care of as well and that they are very important to you. If after all this you still feel horrible and like its the wrong choice, then its not the right choice and you should probably end it, write a letter to USCIS withdrawing the petition.

I wish you the best of luck.

I agree with Danu....my fiance and I went half on the cost for the application, and he will pay for his medical and any other cost that may occur on his end. He is also moving into a room at the end of July and getting rid of the HOUSE he is renting to save money. He told me he wants to have some money saved up once he gets here, of course we have a son together. I know it has to be very hard on him to be away from Dylan. He has managed to visit every couple of months. It sounds to me as if your not sure and I would advise on withdrawing your petition....I'm not gonna say you are crazy, just confused. I do agree that you need to take time out and re-evaluate. GOOD LUCK!! smile.gif

Oh I'm so so sorry to hear that. All this time.....
So what now? I mean are you trying to calm his nerves at all?

Yea my lady arrived. It took a lot of pushing though.
We were in this situation as well, she told me the same things.
Im just so sorry to hear this.

How is it looking now? I mean he has 6 months to think about it right?
That could be a good thing.

Hey there,

Thanks for the concern...he did not come and even though he has until the end of September to come, he has stated that he will never come here to live. He said he will visit Dylan as often as he can, but just to visit. I tried and tried to make him change his mind...he called me self-centered, and was just really nasty towards me, almost as if he wanted to push me away. So I did just that...I left him alone...as hard as it was for me, I just had to for my sanity!! Bad thing is I won't be able to totally cut communications off because of our son. I'm glad your girl finally arrived. Good Luck!!

Thanks Frosty, and yeah I know it is a HUGE move anyone can agree, however he went through with his interview at the end of March and had his Visa in hand, only to tell me two weeks after he got it that he didn't think he loved me enough to move here and that he didn't have the same feelings for me as he use to. #######!! We have a 23 month old..He was just here to visit in March and never mentioned anything about not having any feelings for me anymore. He even left some things here at my house and advised me that he would have to give his job a months notice and that he would be here the middle of May. It's all so crazy...I was devestated!!

I'm so sorry that it didn't work out for you.

Moving to a new country is a huge, huge thing to do. I don't think it quite hit me until I actually got to the airport and had checked in. I was glad to have my fiance with me then, as it was extremely frightening and I nearly had a panic attack at the thought of what I was leaving behind. It was all very overwhelming.

I'm excited for you...just wish my situation would have turned out a bit better. My man was too scared to come over to the US which ultimately ended our relationship.

Thanks for asking. Yes, I am here in the US now. I arrived about 3 weeks ago. :)

It's pretty hectic here at the moment - because I have a medical condition and disability, there've been a lot of doctors to get set up with, etc. We put in our application for a marriage license about a week ago, so we'll hopefully have that sorted in a few weeks time.

I'm loving it here though, and totally feel that the whole K1 process (stresses included!) were worth it. :)

Well, we got our visa in December. She is still not here! AHHHHHHHH. Driving me mad.
My gal just wanted to enjoy her family and her country without the stress of the visa process.
She wanted to take it all in one last time before she moves for good. We have until June for the visa, but I think she'll come
sooner. Hopefully April. Anyway, she loves her job, her family, and her country, more so than the US.

I completely understand. But I still miss her.
Anyway, we have the visa. That's all i car about.
What keeps me going is remembering how good we were together.
And how good we will be.

Cheers.
Thanks for the update Kim.
Hang in there.

Goodluck!! We finally JUST got our interview date scheduled for next week, but I think he's got "cold feet". He sent me an email last night saying that he loved me and missed me, and that he would go to the interview on Wednesday, but if they say yes he wanted more time to think and to make sure he is making the right decision. Mind you, he's been at his job for over 20 yrs, all his family, friends live there...I totally understand his fear. He said he just didn't think it would be this hard to leave. We have a little boy who is going to be 2 in May. This is all so crazy, all he ever talked about was being here with the two of us and now I'm afraid his fear is going to overpower him and he will decide not to come!

My visa was finally delivered by the courier today. I can't wait to speak to my fiance later, so we can start planning travel dates!

Glad someone ius coming along. They never received our packet 3 that we sent in October so we had to send another one. On December 28th we sent by delivery confirmation and they received it on December 29th (per delivery confirmation), HOWEVER, they didnt enter it into the system till the 21st of January. Come to find out we STILL didn't have everything we needed, for some reason Simon didn't realize he was suppose to send EVERYTHING back so we were missing 3 papers. He sent this delivery confirmation and they received it today, but you know it will be another month till they enter the ####### into the system. I'm getting frustrated!! When I talked to the visa center, I told them it was getting ridiculous as its going on a year since we sent off the first packet. Do you know the lady on the other end of that call had the nerve to say "Ma'am you just sent this stuff to us in July", I said are you serious! I told her no we started this process in MARCH, JULY is the date yaw put into the sytem so it wouldn't look as if you guys were so far behind. She could really respond to that...she was a bit rude if you as me....UGGGHHHHH!!!!!

Kimbear, I am so sorry to hear about your situation. It makes me so angry when good people who just want to be with their loved one are put through this, and no matter what they do, there's just nowhere they can go to get help or find out what's happening. I hope you hear some good news (or someone at least is able to tell you something) soon.

I have my medical tomorrow. Feeling nervous about it, but hopefully it'll all be okay. I've already been through all the paperwork and gotten together everything I'll need. It's going to be a long day, but I'm just glad to be getting it done so it can be over with.

My Fiance just had his Medical yesterday and he said all went well said the results of the chest xray won't be available till friday. I wonder how long it takes for us to get a response back for his interview. Its been 3 weeks since he sent all the info over that they requested. Is there a way to check the status of all this or are we to wait till he gets a letter in the mail?

I'm just hoping he will be here before Christmas!!

if you look at your consualte review, you can see the forms they ask for. the beneficiary can pretty much complete a great deal fo these now and the petitioner has to give a few of them to the bene as well. best to do all that asasp so when p3 arrives you can send back the stuff same day / week and have less time waiting for the interview date.

So where do I find this consulate review? Is it online?

Okay I got my paperwork that asked for additional information within a couple of days of the email coming out to me. I sent it back not this past Saturday but the Saturday before that. Still no word that they received my additional info. They advised that although I sent ticket stubs they did not have a date on them and that alone did not constitute us meeting within the past two years. NOW I was almost CERTAIN that I sent OUR sons birth certificate which list him as the father (he had to be at the hospital to sign the paternity affidavit), he was born May 28th we filed in March 2009, that looks like two years to me by my math. So this time I made sure to send copies of my passport pages that showed I was there in 2006 and 2007, I also sent ANOTHER copy of the paternity Aff., and at this point I highlighted his signature. I also gave them a copy of my National Health Care insurance card which shows the same address as his, and a copy of my STUDENT VIS, now if this is not enough, I'm gonna be pissed!!

NOA1 is just a receipt. Our cases are sitting on shelves or in files or something until it's our turn, unfortunately.

Your RFE means that you're only a week or two away from approval, once they get the info back, though. Correct me, someone, if I'm wrong. Usually, you get priority if they're waiting for a bit if information.

Yea. It's amazing how we are tested. I was venting and about to give up all hope when I got an email from the USCIS.

Application Type: I129F, PETITION FOR FIANCE(E)

Current Status: Approval notice sent.

On June 23, 2009, we mailed you a notice that we have approved this I129F PETITION FOR FIANCE(E). Please follow any instructions on the notice. If you move before you receive the notice, call customer service.

Now, I haven't received the letter in the mail yet, but we have been approved. The waiting has ended. Next week I will be in India, and he can join my mother and I to do our wedding shopping. It's amazing. We never imagined that it would work out like this.

I called him as soon as I could breathe. I went into the freight elevator hallway and I was so out of breath and sobbing so loudly that a woman came to ask me if I was okay. My face was tear-stained and it has all just been a relief. More than anything I feel like I can breathe again. We can have a relationship again, outside of these USCIS walls. I pray that this happens for all of you soon. I pray that no one has to wait very long. This is an agonizing process, and even though we all have to go through it, it seems inhumane at times. Best of luck to you all. I will be waiting for you.

-Kam

This week has been hard for me because of distance. He had terrible storms last Monday night, and was without power for a good 30 hours afterwards. Lucky his mum was able to send me an email and let me know he wasn't able to get online, but I hate it so much when distance keeps us from being able to spend time with each other - even if it's just online.

emmaline_g, I know it's hard. Try to take comfort in the fact that at least they are processing timelines closer to when you sent yours off. This gives me a lot more comfort, even though ours still hasn't been touched since it was entered into the online system on the 17th March.

If it makes you guys feel any better, we didnt send in tons for pictures either, I think only a total of 5, the boarding passes and such are the most important part to prove you have seen each other in the last 2 years. Thats all USCIS is looking for right now, the bonafied relationship comes in at the consulate, but front loading your petition means when the consulate reviews it they will see relationship stuff. I doubt it matters for the pictures if you made a cake or rode on a rollercoaster, its just a picture of the two of you together showing you have indeed seen each other (at least for one picture laughing.gif)

Please don't feel bad you guys. Especially if you see other people saying that USCIS saw how much they loved each other blah blah. I'm fairly positive on my end I just got put into a lucky box to get it when I did, and I provided enough proof to show we have indeed seen each other in the last 2 years, which is all the requirements ask for. You are not a fail girlfriend. You are wonderful and it will come!

Okay so I sent in like 1 pic if that, the only evidence I sent in was my sons birthcertificate and the paternity affidavit that Simon is the father and a couple of boarding passes and a letter of intent from both of us...thats it!!

Okay I am getting frustrated....it has almost been 3 months and my application has not even been touched!! When I call USCIS all they say is that I have to wait 6-months and if my application has not been reviewed by then, then they will expedite it, but in the same breath they say that the whole process will only take 6 months!! Now how in the world is that gonna happen....anyone else having issues with process taking longer than 6-months?

I know it's difficult, but try to stay patient (easier said than done, of course) 3 months is still fairly early for the USCIS to take action. After six months is when they will consider taking action to speed hte process up for you. Hopefully you will hear something within the next few months.

We sent our I-129F off in March, no touches or anything yet. It's frustrating to see the lack of any action being taken, but it's too soon to panic just yet. Use the time in the meantime to gather together any information in readiness for when your NOA2 arrives.

Okay thanks...didn't see the thread about them working on another type of Visa...

^^^ It has only been 3 months, there is no need to freak out. All of us filed almost 3 months ago and nobody has received a touch. If you read back in this thread the USCIS is working on a different type of visa right now, which is slowing down the process of our visas. Also, even when times were moving "normally" I would notice that the very lucky people on average got an approval after at least 4 months.

There really is no need to freak out yet.

Yah I have been told not to go by the online Notifications on USCIS as they are not as accurate as one would like to believe. I was told that I would probably get my NOA2 in the mail before it shows online....

Just was told the cheque cleared yesterday, we now have our case number, but of course as its new nothing in the system yet to know if they sent the NOA1 out today. Will update you when we get it biggrin.gif

Usually they put the cases in the system immediately. However, I think that there has been problems with the system online lately, because no one is getting their approval (NOA2) emails, and then getting the hard copy in the mail. So you may or may not get put in the online system soon, but you should recieve the paper copy faily quickly My NOA1 was the 15th of Jan. and I got my paper copy the 23rd.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I had heard a few people saying they weren't in the system yet, but it could also be that maybe I read one of the numbers off the back of his cheque wrong. Either way, no panicing, they took our money so even though its a small step, its one step closer biggrin.gif

Hope you hear something really soon. Happy Holidays!!!

Okay My fiance and I have been working on this Visa thing since March 2009, he just had his medical on November 24, 2009 and we sent the last packet to the Embassy in London in October. My question is, how long does it take till they give you an interview date? Is there anywhere or anyone I can call to check the status of my application or when my fiance's interview is?

Thanks for all your help!!

Hi all, I have just started my process. I sent my fiance visa off on March 5th to the California Service Center. I'm just wondering how long this process takes. Also I did not send all the proof of evidence that I am reading people sent. All I sent was our letters of intent, his boarding pass, our sons (who is 9 months old) birth certificate (that has my fiance's name on it), and I think that was about it. I did explain that we met will I was going to school in England. Will this be good enough? Thanks all!!

Kelly smile.gif

Yes, the nine month old child is pretty solid evidence of meeting within two years. When you get your NOA1 or have evidence they received you petition (return receipt in the mail) put your NOA1 into the VJ timeline and you will get an accurate (as accurate as they get) estimate fo your NOA2 date. Add 2-3 months to that for when he will have his visa.

Okay so the NOA is evidence that they received the application? From there what will they send me? Will I have to go to the interview at the US Embassy in London with my fiance or will he just have to go?

Thanks for your reply, but I keep seeing this NOA, what is that? This process I was told would not take longer than 6-months is this true? What are the steps? I thought once they approved the application he just had to go to an Interview at the US Embassy in London....is this right?
