That's how I understand it as well smile.gif

But if you go to a restaurant in the UK and ask for water, they bring you bottled water. Here, you ask for water and they bring tap water. I don't think they can charge for tap water in the UK but you have to specify that you want tap water.... in my experience anyway. Just a difference of norms.

I wonder if it's actually more difficult, partly due to those who feel this way?

What I think you will like:

Everything is convenient - more brands to choose from at the supermarket (many have "international" aisles with British brands as well), you don't even have to get out of your car for the pharmacy, bank, dry cleaning and a coffee.

I personally don't like that you can drive thru for almost everything.... I find it like the beginning of laziness or something laughing.gif but it's definitely different!

QUOTE
Our cars are automatic mostly, one less thing for you to worry about while you are learning how to drive on the wrong side of the road!

This is just a personal preference, but I hate driving automatics. I was already comfortable driving on this side of the road though before I moved here, due to living in Belgium for 3 years. Autos are fine, again I find it the lazy way of driving tho! However I bet it would be great if you had never driven on this side of the road.

QUOTE
Service - you will get water, chips and salsa or bread as soon as you sit down at your table in a restaurant. They will keep coming back and ask if you want more tea/water/soda.

I love this - this is DEFINITELY one of the great things about the US. I can't even believe they charge you for water in the UK...

QUOTE
What you won't like:

You and your accent will be a novelty to everyone you meet, sometimes they will patronize you...."what do you mean you don't have BASEBALL in England? EVERYONE has baseball!" Americans like to assume that you have everything we have.

United KingdomStupid Lawyers !!!!
Yeah we had a similar thing with our lawyer. They didn't just give us the forms to fill out ourselves that they could check after, they gave us some stupid questionnaire and then proceeded to make stupid mistakes throughout the actual form. They wrote one of my previous addresses with Belgium as the CITY and Germany (?) as the country... I mean come on! Where did Germany come from??

We'd paid upfront for them to help us through both K1 and AOS, but I have to say they weren't as much help as they said they'd be.... our lawyer promised to help me with getting my SSN and my driver's license, and when I sent him an email saying can I get these now I have my EAD his response was 'sure, take your EAD card'... a monkey could have told me that! As a result, I will NOT be using a lawyer for removal of conditions in 2 years. Unluckily for me, I didn't find this website until after we were already married blink.gif

Anyways I'm sure if you just correct the mistake yourself it won't cause any problems. Tell your lawyer they made a mistake and make sure you check everything they fill out extremely thoroughly, because this probably won't be the last mistake they make wacko.gif

United KingdomSurvived first year.
Mmm blank stares are fun.

A couple of years ago when I was visiting my H, I was at the airport and somehow got talking to this businessman dude. We were talking for like 10 mins about different random things when he says to me... "you know, you speak very good English!" I was a bit shocked so I just thanked him. Then he asked where I was from. When I replied "England" he suddenly looked shocked, made excuses and left. It was hilarious.

Same thing happened to my dad when he was visiting his wife's family in Texas - some lady told him "you speak English real good" to which he replied "why thank you, I've been practising" laughing.gif

United KingdomTraveling to US, question about "proving ties"
Every visa waiver is valid for 3 months. I have entered the US about 5 times with one and never had any problems, and I've never had to show a return ticket so I don't see why they would say "well since your ticket says you're leaving December 18th you're forbidden to stay longer" since you're allowed to stay for up to 90 days.

I visited my H once when we were going through the K1 process, and I was never informed that I should bring things to show ties to the UK. I remember that the officer asked what the purpose of my visit was and I said "to see my boyfriend". Well I guess the officer saw my engagement ring and asked how long we'd been engaged and when we were getting married etc, to which I told him we'd get married when I had my K1. I remember when I'd been admitted to the country and walked away from the officer, he said (nastily!) "JUST DON'T STAY HERE ILLEGALLY'. Which bugged me but what are you gonna do! Anyway, bottom line, he never asked me to prove anything (though in hindsight, I should have brought a letter from my university or something to prove that I had ties).

I wouldn't worry too much about it, the visa waiver is very easy - she won't even have to fill anything out until she's on the plane, and then it's just minimal info.

My family is from north Wales, I've only been to south Wales once and we went to St David's.... I would recommend going there, it's sooooo cute but it might be a bit far for a day trip, not sure.

Tenby is a great place to visit too.

United KingdomHeathrow to Gatwick
Just to add something here, hubby once had to do this in the opposite - so he landed in Gatwick and had to take the bus to Heathrow for his connecting flight. He had NO problems. At Gatwick you don't have to walk miles to get to the bus like in Heathrow. Gatwick is just a much better and more organized airport. Hubby says he even had time for a beer while waiting for his connecting flight in Heathrow.

Someone suggested getting a taxi the first journey, and the bus on the way back - I would second that. I know it would be expensive but after the cr@p we went through I'd rather pay the money and not have to wait 5 hours for a 30 minute flight.

I don't know where the taxis go from in Heathrow, but the traffic wasn't the issue for us - it was the distance we had to walk and the time we had to wait to get the bus that made us miss the flight. So if there are taxis waiting right outside the terminal where your friend lands it should be much quicker and easier than trying to navigate Heathrow.
catrocksFemaleEngland2008-04-11 13:16:00
United KingdomHeathrow to Gatwick
Oh God I did this once.... never again.

It seems to be ok going from Gatwick to Heathrow but going the other way sucks because Heathrow is such a *$%@!@# airport. We did the National Express route, we had to walk about 45 mins through heathrow to get to the terminal and then queue for 20 mins to get tickets. By the time we got to Gatwick we were too late to board our flight to Manchester (COME ON!!! it's a 30 minute flight!!!) and we had to wait 5 hours for another. All this on top of jet lag meant two very unhappy bunnies. Needless to say, we hit the bar.

If it's in her budget I'd say get a taxi. The Heathrow express sucks. Or try to reschedule so there is more than 3 hours in between flights. 3 hours is not enough time.

Better you fly to Gatwick than Heathrow!

I always take sandwiches on the plane with me as I undoubtedly get very bored and it uses up 10 mins to eat them!

Don't bring any drinks though as you can't take them thru security. You can buy water once you're through security, and you'll need it because planes have NO humidity so you get dehydrated very easily.

If you have an MP3 player, put a lot of music on it, otherwise you'll get bored of listening to the same thing over and over.

Don't worry though, the worst thing about the flight is its length - it seems to go even longer when you know your sweetie is at the end of it! Have a safe flight smile.gif

I'm sorry you're homesick Kat. People here tend to assume that it's easier to assimilate to life in the US when you're coming from the UK, as they are such "similar" countries. Honestly, I found it easier to assimilate when I lived in Belgium and didn't speak the language!

It takes time. It would be good if you could meet up with some other Brits, that has helped me a lot. Try to make the most of living here - like other people have said it's never going to be the same as your life in the UK was, but that doesn't mean that it can't be good. Volunteer, go to meetup groups, get a dog (or borrow someone's) and go to the dog park.

I've heard that it takes 3 years to totally assimilate to life in a new country.
