CanadaNew USCIS fees
There's talk that the fees are going up to make things more efficient. I don't know if that includes more staff or something else. And I think I read AOS fee increase includes EAD and AP so the fees aren't quite as much of an increase as originally thought, but who knows.

Here's a few threads:

CanadaWhy did you choose the US?
My wife goes through spats of lonliness from time to time because she feels she'll never have the relationships in the States that she had in Canada. The winters aren't the best in Philly...they can get long and cold with a lot of snow. But the murder rate just hit 115 for the year so that's good.

Nini, I told my wife there was another Canadian in the Philly area on VJ so she said if you'd like to get together once you're here, feel free to PM me. There's also am ex-Pat Canadian group that meets in Manyunk the thrid Saturday each month. A co-worker whose husband is Canadian told me about it.

CanadaWhy did you choose the US?
The umidity this past week has been brutal. Fortunatley we got a break this weekend. My wife, the Canadian hates cold weather. I love it. She had humidity in Ontario, but somehiw I don't think it was as bad as we have in the Philadelphia area. We have a basement apartment and no AC(windows are too small) so it gets a little moist in there. We have a dehumidifier, but that makes the place hot. With a baby on the way, that's ll the more reason to get out of there.

CanadaWhy did you choose the US?
We decided on the US because I had a job/roots and my wife just moved back to Ontario with her parents after they spent six years in Alberta. She had no job/no career/no school and we figured it was better for me to keep my job than for me to find one in Canada. Since she's going to be a stay at home mom, that helped on that department too. We talked about retiring in Canada one day but once we have kids and they grow up and possibly live in the Philadelphia area, it would be hard to leave them.

CanadaIs this the REAL candian forum???
I was disappointed the Sens couldn't pull it out. They looked like the Flyers in the third period(Corey forechecking and keeping three Sens burried deep). My only thought was I may have pulled past my brother-in-law in fantasy hockey, but her changed his roster before the game started. :protest: Oh well. I still get chills when the cup comes out and got a little choked up for the ovation Selanne got. As Gene Hart used to say, "Good night, and Good hockey."

I think I remember hearing years ago the network cut out of the SuperBowl to air Heidi, so it's not the first time someone's done something like this.

CanadaIs this the REAL candian forum???
Hey all, I decided to hop in today and saw the thread. I'm pulling for the Flyers! Oops, they couldn't even get the No. 1 pick next year. I've always cheered for Canadian teams once the Flyers are out. My wife is pulling for the Flames, since the Leafs aren't around. I don't know who I'm going to go with...I think the Sens, since the Habs also aren't in it.

CanadaCanada Day Celebrations
My brother is having one is South Jersey next Sunday, but I already posted the details in the turkey thread. My wife, if she's up to going, will be the guest of honor, being that she'll be the only Canuck in attendance. He joked about making a hat the she could wear that looks like the Conn Smythe trophy.

My wife says second cup isn't very popular and Starbucks isn't that good. She reminded me we went to Second Cup in Montreal. We did like Coffee Time better than Tim's if you can believe it.

CanadaHow well do you Know Canada
80/111 for Canadian Citezienship... 72%. I like how some questions are answered later on in other questions. Some of them were ridiculous as there was only one good answer. I guess they don't want any shut outs. And some had answers with US people/government.

Canadamedical question ?
When you get your package 3, there will be instructions on what to do. In there, you'll see a checklist. You can get your medical at that point. You can actually send them what they need back right away and do all the other things(police, I-134) during the waiting period. I've seen people ask for a copy of the medical, either from the doctor, but most likely when they get processed at the border. We didn't do either, which is why I believe something got lost during AOS which now we have an RFE for. I should say if we had another copy, that might prevent us from having to get a whole new medical, but we'll see how our infopass/congressman turn out. I don't know about the TB test as that's a new thing.

CanadaSwiss Chalet vs. Boston Market
I figure since we're always discussing Tim's vs. other coffees in here, why not ask which is better: Swiss Chalet or Boston Market or some mysetrious third party rotissserie chicken.

I told my wife I'd start a little fire about how much SC pales in comparrison to BM, but who am I kidding. For the environment of the restaurant alone, Swiss Chalet would win. The dipping sauce amkes it an easy winner, but I do like Boston Market's sides: creamed spinach or pumpkin or roasted garlic potatoes.

CanadaHow did you guys meet?
I seemed to have posted this quite a few times in the last few days, but this will be the detailed version. :) I'm in Philly and she was in alberta at the time. As part of a short-term missions trip with my church, I went to a handicamp in Montana in the summer of '04. She was also going there to volunteer but stays most of the summer. She sat next to me during camp training becuase I "looked older and married and didn't seem like I would be a distraction". Well, Iw as older but unmarried. We talked a bit but not much. Unbekown to me, she was observing me all week. When my group went to Glacier PArk, she was invitied along by someone else. She rode in the van and we talked, all the while I thought it was silly for me to talk with her(distance, etc). She decided on that trip she didn't like me anymore. The girls had a sleep over the last night of camp and she asked a lot of questions about me, prompting one of my friends to think she liked me. She told me this a month later. Needless to say, the thought grew legs and we started emailing. We stopped after a month b/c we thought nothing would ever come of the emails; they were just small talk.

Anyway, as the next summer rolled around we started emailing more frequently about being excited about camp. We both must have sensed we were thinking about each other because there was an awkwardness when we were near each other. We sat next to each other for a meal or two but still couldn't talk. Her parents came to pick her up early to take her to a wedding and I met them. She came back for the last day of camp and we alkted for aboput an hour that night. When I got home we started emailing every day. At the end of the summer we both alluded to something on our minds so finally I asked her if we were just emailing or if it could be something more(after much prayer and advice from my Christian frinds). We decided to see where things would go and that October I flew to Great Falls to get a rental car an drive to Coutts. We could email, carry a converstion on the phone, but there was this akwardness to being together. WE didn't know what to say. We drove to Lethbridge the next night for dinner and on the way I thought how brutal this was going. But at the same time, there was this sense of peace. I guess that's the peace that passes understanding.

We were walking around and she asked what I was thinking. I wanted to hold her hand but didn't feel right because we weren't talking. She grabbed my hand and this...I don't know...all the awkwardness went away. After dinner, we went to Henderson Lake and sat on a bench. I said I wanted to kiss her, and she said 'Why don't you". As we were kissing, and the way she was holding me, I thought there was no way I ever wanted to let her go. I visited again in December and she came in February. When she left, I wrote a song for her, which was how I would propose. When I went back in March, I asked her dad if I could marry her. I was thinking of doing it at that visit, but I needed abunch of options: small house is Coutts, family ina nother room, taking a guitar for a walk, etc. Anyway, I waited until she came Memorial Day weekend of '06 and we got engaged. We called USCIS that weekend to see what we needed to do to get married. We got married this past March.

My sister-in-law's brother told me about VJ and this has helped a lot.

CanadaCareer change at 33.
I wish I had more of a background than TV production with a music minor. D'oh! I've been at my job ten years and have no idea what I'd want to go into. I like what I do for the most part. It's hard when you have to work holidays and you're doing nothing important. Like, if I were helping people on Christmas(doctor, pilot, etc) instead of working for a sports station. We don't do much during the day which wold ordinarily be a good thing but the down time gets old and only leads for more opportunity to complain. Then, when it finally gets busy, everyon complains because there's too much to do.

CanadaI had an Iced Cappucino yesterday....
If my wife is able to get her emeregency AP, I said she could get an Iced Cappie. Understandably, she said she didn't have the heart for it. I said "Flames said the mint was good," at which point I got the evil eye, because it was right after I said I posted about her brother on Vj). I had to quickly defend myself and say it was an iced cappie thread, not that I said I was going going to Canada to be with her family and hopefully get a Timmies on the way.
