United KingdomWA sights for the British
My family loved Pike Place Market and the Space Needle. You could also go to Mount Rainier or do the naff Duck Tour on Lake Washington! You could always take the one-stop monorail or the 3 mile light rail wink.gif Only joking! If your pa in law loves beer go to Pyramid and watch a baseball game. Always a hit with my family anyway! Good luck!

PS Don't do the Boeing Factory tour. It is highly boring!!

US Citizenship General DiscussionFiling N400 then going on holiday
I am traveling around the US for 6 weeks or so and I am going to file my N-400 in the next few days before I go. As my mail will be on hold at the post office, I will not be able to find out my receipt number and therefore view my case online. Does anyone know if i call the Customer Service line will they tell me my case number over the phone? I would hate to miss out on a biometrics appointment!
Thanks! whistling.gif

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 Question 7A
I put how many days I have visited abroad in the past 3 years, since I am applying on the basis of being married and living here for 3 years. I think it is an ambiguous question, and I feel they ask this question in order to find out if you have really been residing in the US since becoming a resident - be it for 5 or 3 years. Why would they care where i've visited before coming here as a permanent resident? I have already answered that question as a K1! They should have put 5/3 years as applicable. star_smile.gif

US Citizenship General Discussion3 years to get citizenship?
QUOTE (Jack and Barbara @ May 1 2008, 10:47 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I don't think you even have to wait to be a conditional permanent resident to be eligible for in-state tuition. I contacted a couple of my local universities and found out that my fiancee is elibigle for in-state tuition based off of my residency in my state for over a year. Maybe this is a state-by-state determination, but my fiancee is eligible once she arrives. If, however, her AOS is denied while she is studying, then she would obviously lose her in-state tuition (but then again, facing deportation would likely be mroe of a worry at that point anyways).

I guess each state is different! Wish that would've worked for me, then I wouldn't have had to wait 1 year!

US Citizenship General Discussion3 years to get citizenship?
I am at school now. In order to get in-state tuition, I needed to have been a resident in the state (Washington) for at least one year. In addition, I had to show my green-card. Then I applied for financial aid. Simple! kicking.gif

I've always wondered if they would make a British person do the English test!

Yes and he laughed and said "Why did the US want independence?" and I said "I don't know. Why did you?" He thought that was hilarious and I laughed and said that they were whiners because the taxes were too high!
Luckily the speaking and writing wasn't too easy although the guy said I had spelt my name wrong - yet another dig!! Easily amused!!!

US Citizenship General DiscussionInterview
Just thought I'd post my experience here to share:

Pretty easy exprerience. Interviewer was nice and asked if i wanted to go straight to the history questions, since i can speak and write English (I'm British) He made funny jokes about he would pick the questions with the British parts! He asked 6 questions:

Who is the current VP?
What is the highest court?
How many representatives?
Who were sold as slaves?
Who makes the laws of the land?
How many stars on the flag?

He did note that I was very early in applying for citizenship and he was surprized (it's a little over 3 years). He also asked for some current evidence of marriage (I nearly didn't bring any, since i submitted them with the application!) Luckily I had my vet bill from the night before and a current bank statement and voila - it was over!! I have my oath scheduled for December 11th so that'll be a nice early Christmas prezzie!

I applying for naturalization because I can be a British and a US citizen at the same time. It's great that you can be both, otherwise I would have to think a lot harder. And anyways, the good old Queenie doesn't allow you to renounce your British citizenship anyways...............

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionAddress change!
Hi there!

My husband and I are going to sell our house and go traveling together around the US and we'll be 'homeless' I don't think the USCIS will like this as " FJ Cruiser, Middle of Nowhere US..........." is not a valid address. As I am another Nebraska waiter, I am worried where my 10 year green card will be sent. I will have NO physical address, but will they accept a PO box as one instead? Shall I keep my present address the same, but just change my mailing address?

Help please!!
Good luck to all Nebraska waiters...........

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionWill you become a U.S. Citizen?
Ah, what a shame! Do people apply be a US citizen because they WANT to? Or rather, that they HAVE to in order to avoid the fees etc.... I suppose at least I have the choice of being dual. I don't care if I am a US citizen or not - so long as I am with hubby! We can always live back in England - not that it would be a sacrifice at all either! I don't really care and that's the most important thing to me!

QUOTE (mariahswind @ Dec 14 2009, 11:10 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I have been under a possibly wrong impression regarding filing a my US Tax Returns since living in Australia.

I have had earned income from work since Jan 2004. I have though been in receipt of Australian Government Benefits, initially Newstart Allowance then Austudy and then since 2006 I have gotten Parenting Payment along with the Family Tax Benefit parts A and B.

Assuming this is considered income and I need to file on it, can I file jointly (hubby is Aussie never worked in the USA and only receives a Aussie Disability Pension) or do I have to file separately? If I file jointly then I have never made the amount stipulated as the threshold.

I really hope someone out there knows what I can/should do.

Kind regards,
mariahswind

I was able to finally find a page at the irs site that answers part of my question. If I file jointly then my husbands 'income' must be included... defeats my purpose as I'd still have to file.

oh I see I made a typo ... I haven't had earned income from work since jan 2004 only the government benefits.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresI'm new pls help me
He needs to file a I-130 Petition for alien relative. If he is in the USA or only temporarily in the Philippines he will have to file this with the Chicago locked box, but can do a direct filing at the Philippines Embassy if he can prove he has permission to reside there. Such as I have a permanent residence here in Australia so I can file with the Sydney Consulate. He needs to go to this website for all the info on it http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis to find the page on i-130 petitions just do a search. And this site will be of use for filing through the Embassy in Manila http://manila.usembassy.gov/

Hope that helps, I am new to all this myself and just about to file the i-130 myself.

Best wishes!
