US Citizenship General DiscussionRenew Expiring Philippine Passport? Eligible for US Citizenship in 5 months

Hello everyone,

 

I am a Philippine citizen, female, and a US permanent resident with a 10 year green card. I will be eligible to apply for US citizenship in December 2014, just 5 months from now--and it is a step

I intend to take.  My Philippine passport is expiring in November. I have not renewed it since I got married to a US citizen here in the US three years ago, so it still bears my maiden name.

 

My question: should I renew my passport now (together with name change), or is it better to wait until after I acquire my US citizenship? Does it make a difference?

I intend to retain Philippine citizenship as well, i.e. have dual citizenship. Is that a separate process I need to apply for at the Philippine embassy, or can I just keep both my (renewed) Phil passport

as well as my new US one when the time comes?

 

I tried checking the Phil. embassy website but the information on this is not clear.

Please check validity of the N-400 form you are using. The current one, dated 09/13/13 expiring 09/30/15, seems pretty clear to me. If it's the first marriage for both of you, answer "1" in question Part 9, Q 3. Answer Q 4 A-G with all the details about your current spouse. Good luck.

If your sister is a Singapore PR(Permanent Resident), her chances of being able to get a tourist visa is big since SPR's are almost considered SG citizens and SG Citizens can easily come to the US. I've had lots of Filipino friends that are SPR's that were able to go to US without so much trouble. Best thing to do is to apply .

Even so they would have to present proof of ties to the Philippines, property, cash, etc. My sister failed to do that when she applied for a tourist visa while working in Singapore, and she got a denial. At the time she was single and in her mid-20s, so those factors didn't help her case. It seems they apply exactly the same criteria for evaluation (based on your nationality) whichever embassy you apply at.

My mother learned to drive when she was widowed at age 43. It's true she totalled the car 6 months into driving :blush: , but thereafter never had another accident.

I guess it depends how motivated your fiancee is. It's also probably a plus that she would be learning to drive in the US, where traffic rules are better enforced than in the Philippines and drivers are generally more disciplined. I learned to drive in Manila (at age 17), and it was a tough adjustment for me driving in the US when I was there on a visit.

You're right. CENOMAR and NBI clearance are only needed for the consulate (at least a 5-7 month wait). Meanwhile, read the very detailed immigration guides on this site for the I-129f application/package. There are timelines, examples of filled-out forms, etc. Very valuable info that my fiance and I consulted in detail when we filed. While you're together in the Philippines, you can prepare everything together (it's what we did) and get her to sign a couple of the forms such as the Fiance/e Letter of Intent (to Marry) and the G-325a.

I had a similar issue. When I applied for a new passport in 2009 (lost the old one) my birth certificate surfaced with a slightly more complete name than the one I had been using. So now my official IDs (passport, drivers' license) reflect my complete name as in BC.

When I applied for NBI clearance last week, I requested that apart from my current complete name, they also put in my old name on the space for "alias" or "AKA". I understand this is what the US Embassy has required from previous interviewees with a similar problem. (I am also planning to go in with affidavits "one and the same" but I doubt whether they will be requested, I will just have them in case of need.)

YOu could go the official name change route, but that will take a long time.

I can understand what you are dealing with, and I am sorry you are in this situation. I think in general Filipino families have the best interest of their daughter in mind, but of course there will exceptions--those who may try to take advantage of the foreign husband/fiance whom they perceive as rich.

Yes, salaries AND expenses in the US are much higher, but even so the general standard of living there is way better than many Filipinos especially in the countryside. And so most Filipino parents will be happy their daughter will enjoy a better life, and for some there will be an expectation that their daughter's new prosperity will filter through to them, especially to support younger siblings.

You seem to be a perceptive and sensitive man, you will decide what is the truth in your situation and give (or not) according to your heart. I think it's also important to involve your fiancee in your thinking process--a good way to get to know each other (and each other's cultures) even better. She also needs to start weaning herself from her family--and you can help her too in this process.

In our case, I have never asked my fiance (USC) for money nor do I expect him to support my family in anyway. But I have different circumstances than your fiancee. And I would like to say that I very much admire the USC men here who are helping their fiancees/wives' families, especially in ways that will help them generate their own income.

It's been 11 days since my interview.

My fiancé called the embassy this morning and he was told my visa was approved and to wait another 7-10 days for delivery. Who knows what's going on and why some cases are delivered early and others late? After my interview the CO was unequivocal about my approval. She even offered congratulations and best wishes.

Oh well, I'll keep my fingers crossed I get it by the end of this week.

The only "packet 3" you will receive is a letter stating that you are eligible to schedule a visa interview. It will give you the numbers to call to book the appointment (632 982 5555). If you have your case number and passport, you or your petitioner can call to make the appointment. Also possible to book online at http://www.ustraveldocs.com.ph.

The letter will also direct you to the website http://Manila.usemba.../wwwh3238.html. This will be your main checklist of all the requirements necessary to prepare for the interview, including information on the medical, and links to the various DS forms you will need to fill up.

None of these requirements should be sent to the USEM ahead of time. Instead you bring them all with you on your interview date, except for the results of your medical, which St. Luke's will send directly themselves.

In short you're good to go. No need to wait for the letter but that's up to you.
