Missy, cute pictures! I see from your signature that you met in New Orleans, which is where I'm from! Did you meet at one of the festivals there?

No....I guess what I wrote was a little misleading. We decided to meet there - he flew into New Orleans and I drove down and picked him up at the airport and we spent a week there and then a week here in Jackson before he flew back to Romania where he was living/working at that time. It is our FAVORITE city though. We live about 2.5 hours away so we go as often as we can. Do you still live there now? That's probably going to be our POE, either there or Memphis.

Good morning everyone! Over in the Phils thread they have posted "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" and I love looking at all of their happy faces. So.....I'll go first! I'll show you mine......

We are extremely blessed - we have 4 children between us, ages 20, 22, 22 and 25. We've never managed to have everyone in the same place at one time but we've had a lot of different combinations and somehow, they have all managed to spend a lot of time with each other and with us. So....(drum roll please) in no particular order - Missy, Lars, Andy (25), Maggie (22), Allan (22) and Michael (20)!

Missy... wonderful that you have picked out rings... I am looking forward to doing that myself. Hopefully when Joanna comes here in June that is something that we (or I) want to do. She wants to get her engagement ring sized. smile.gif It is kind of funny... the things we kind of take for granted here and others see (almost) with childlike eyes smile.gif It is good to remember that many times it is the little, the simple things in life that a full of splendor.

I have been crunching numbers on the recent approvals... VSC was sooooo slow when we first were looking and filing back then it was 152 days... currently if you throw out the outliers the VSC is only 98 days which is down 10 days (from 108) just last week. smile.gif

I know! I am sooo ready for this to be over with. We had already been living together for a while when Lars was denied entry last year.....the house needs some painting, the yard needs some work, the dog misses him......not to mention ME missing him. I think I have everything ready for the interview part. I just wish that some of the other Danes that had been through this process had posted a review about the interview at the embassy in CPH or any information about what to expect there. Even the Embassy website has very little information. Lars did say he was going to go by there next week and see if he could ask some questions. July will be here before we know it!

Welcome MaryandTim!! You are here just in time for lots of movement at VSC!! It is so exciting to see January approvals now and to see our estimated approval date moving closer and closer!

We LOVE to travel. In June of 2007 we took all of our kids on an old fashioned road trip to the Grand Canyon. We left Mobile, Alabama and headed west! It was great and something we all talk about when we are together. In January of 2008 we flew into JFK and rented a car and drove down to Mobile and that was fun as well. We too are "old farts" and love getting in the car and exploring. What I have discovered when traveling with Lars is the stuff that we see all of the time - Stuckeys, Dairy Queen, and back roads are what he loves to see. New Orleans is one of his favorite places too. And something else I learned, he knows WAY more American History than will ever know!

We picked out wedding rings the other day, going to go ahead and order them next week, sort of picked out a dress and making small plans now.....very impatient to make the BIG plans!

Ya'll have a great weekend!

Thanks for your response. That is comforting. I am not so worried about if we get it, our application is pretty simple and straight forward and organized, it is, as you said, a matter of worrying about the WHEN.

For now, I'm trying to use this waiting time as a chance to learn Danish- which is such a hard language! smile.gif

He finally wrote back and said since they need it anyways he wanted to include it to be 'proactive'.

I am just all around feeling vulnerable and nervous about all of this, mainly because as much as we worked to make the packet 'perfect', it's ultimately completely out of our control.

Thanks for everyone's responses, I really appreciate it.

QUOTE (Richard-Joanna @ Apr 28 2009, 10:01 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Although many documents are not required in the initial filing, some Embassies do not like 'additional' evidence that is not already in the file. To that end, especially from an attorney's point of view, it is best to 'front load' the application. Since the whole file will ultimately end up at the Embassy when you go for the interview. It is probably over kill, but maybe it is better safe than sorry.

I am not sure if that is your attorney's reasoning or not, but it is better to think like that rather than thinking he/she is incompetent. smile.gif

Melanne,

I think we can all agree that this process is long and arduous which ultimately takes its toll on our emotions. Having said that maybe this will reassure you. Recently I had the opportunity to go to the US Embassy in Warsaw (I went to help my SO get her tourist visa). While I was there and was allowed to go to the window to speak with a CO I asked about the K1 process and insight into it. The long and short of this conversation was this. We as USC have the right to petition and in fairness they really do want to issue us all the visas. That said, there is a process to go through, pure and simple. Assuming all things being equal, meaning we fill out the forms correctly, supply the needed information, have a 'real' relationship there is really nothing to worry about. Some Embassies are harder than others (mostly because of fraud) but the truth, as I believe, it is that the COs do want to actually issue the visas. So cross your T's and dot your I's get the information ready... and then relax it is just a waiting game. smile.gif I know, easier said that done, but I have found this knowledge quite comforting. Personally, I have stopped worrying about the IF it happens and now just worry about WHEN. smile.gif

Richard

That is one of the things I find very attractive about a cruise... you DONT have to do anything. There are hundreds of things to do, but they are all optional. Joanna and I did a 10 day Mediterranean cruise as our first date. smile.gif a 10 day first date!

The best thing I like is not having to think about what to eat or where to go... there is food EVERYWHERE and ALL the time... smile.gif Also summer in the Caribbean is far less popular since it is so hot so there are not as many people on the Islands. I went once in the Winter and it was still nice, but literally several Islands had 13 ships in port! 13 ships with 2500 people each (or more) the small Island towns were so crowded that you couldn't move... In the Summer it may only be 2 or 3 ships in port and in some Islands we will be the only ship.

It is kind of strange... one might think that 3000 people on a ship there would be no space to be alone.. but strangely enough there are many things and places to be that it still feels very intimate. A stroll on deck after dinner for example one might see two or three other couples... it is very nice.

When we decide, I'll letcha all know,

Richard

My best friend and I took all of our kids on a cruise at Christmas a few years ago - we went with Norwegian Cruise Lines out of New Orleans and did the "free-style" cruise. Our kids are all grown and we had a blast! To this day - every vacation we take, we always say we are freestylin!!

Hi
Security checks are done frist. From what I have read..Kind of makes sense.
They are improving which is great.

WASHINGTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today that, working in close partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the backlog for FBI name checks pending more than six months has been eliminated. This is the fourth milestone met by the agency as part of its joint plan with the FBI to completely eliminate the backlog of pending name checks.

Just 16 months ago, more than 349,000 name checks were pending; of that, nearly 150,000 had been pending for more than six months. All USCIS requests pending for six months or more as of February 28, 2009, have now been responded to by the FBI’s National Name Check Program (NNCP).

In April 2008, USCIS and the FBI established milestones prioritizing work based on the age of the pending name check. Priorities included processing all name checks pending more than three years by May 2008 (the FBI had already eliminated all cases pending more than four years); those pending more than two years by July 2008; and those pending more than one year by November 2008.

USCIS and FBI are on schedule to meet the next two goals: all name checks requests pending longer than 90 days to be completed by May 30, 2009 and, by the end of June 2009, the FBI will complete 98 percent of USCIS name check requests within 30 days and process the remaining two percent within three months. USCIS and the FBI will continue to focus on sustaining a rigorous and efficient screening of each name check request.

Elimination of the name check backlog is an example of USCIS’ commitment to making timely decisions about immigration applications and petitions, while maintaining the security and integrity of America’s immigration system.

I know I'm not saying anything others aren't dealing with, but the way the VSC track keeps getting long and longer is frustrating us. In looking through posts, it looks like these things are cyclical. Hopefully things will start picking up. But every time I open my timeline, the estimated dates are farther away. Makes me not want to open it for a month since that's the only way it seems I'll have less waiting than the last time I looked.

Just venting and feel the better for it. Please no "others have waited longer." I know. But I imagine they were allowed to vent too.

I agree with you! It's hard to see people at the California Service Center being approved in 30 days! One good thing is that the December filers are starting to be approved.

I find the point about them booting his computer to be very bad. Usually you need a search warrant for that to happen. This is why I am avoiding going back during the K1 approval. If something like this would happen to me, I would probably not want to live there anymore. Another thing that seems ridiculous is that you have to pay for the ticket. At every airport, before you fly to the States, they have agents and they ask you all kinds of questions. If they let you in the flight then they should be responsible for the cost of the ticket if you are sent back.

I would just stay in the airport till they kick me out like that movie with Tom Hanks smile.gif.

Well, I hope all goes fast for the March fillers. But our center is quite slow now.....The california forumists are posting NOA2 within 1 to 2 months.....and we have the 1 year and 6 months clubs....

Just to clarify, the BPO asked if if they could look at his computer and he said yes. His feelings about it were if he said no that would look bad and if he said yes and cooperated with them it might look better. They billed him for the ticket, we submitted the return ticket that he had already bought and they credited us back with that amount....I should have been clearer in the telling.

Hi Missmissy

We're worried about how many times and for how many days a year you can be in the US on visa waiver program.
Did your fiance get denied because he did not stay in Denmark for twice as long as in the US during a given year (we were told that for every day you spend in the US you have to be out of the country for two days)? Or did he just visit too often for the CBP officer's liking? Did they explain anything at all about the rules concerning this?

Thanks, Jon

This is what happened to us - and we were not very smart about anything! Before I tell this story - a disclaimer.

I did not do any research about him living here until it was almost too late. We had been waiting for his divorce to be final (for TWO YEARS) and knew we couldn't get married until then. I had assumed that we could come to the U.S., gather my family and get married and then go to some office somewhere and tell someone that I had married him and he was from Denmark....sort of a Just lettin ya'll know kind of thing. I had no idea until October what was involved in marrying someone that isn't from around here! Now I know! We were just busy with other things and I never thought that it was going to be this hard or involve so much paperwork! We just didn't know.

We left the U.S. in the spring of 2007 and had an apartment in Sweden. We traveled a lot that year but in January of 2008 - I wanted to come home. So, we left Sweden, kept our apartment there, and moved back to Jackson, Mississippi and bought a house. We knew we were going to get married as soon as we could but we were waiting on a divorce certificate from Denmark. There have been delays with getting that so, every 90 days Lars would fly home to Denmark, stay a few weeks and then fly back. He did this from January until October. In June, we decided to give up the apartment in Landskrona, Sweden. I couldn't leave my family and it was just money wasted. He went back to CPH in the middle of September and in October when he tried to enter at Newark, he was denied entry. The BPO saw how many trips he had made and started asking questions. He was very honest and answered all of the questions, yes he is engaged to an American, yes he has been back and forth, no he wasn't aware of the actual requirements of the VWP.....Lars' biggest mistake was carrying his library card for here in Jackson, an AARP card, a AAA Club card and a Kroger Plus card. They opened his computer, booted it up and started reading emails and of course we talked about waiting for the divorce, getting married, taking care of our house, my mother's terminal illness......he had a resume on there as well, stating that his home address was our address in Mississippi. According to the Border Patrol Officer - all of this indicated that he had in fact immigrated to the U.S. or that he was intending to immigrate.

So, they put him on a plane that afternoon and sent him back. Totally our fault for not researching any of this BEFORE we did anything. The good news is the only thing that we had to sacrifice that time was the money for the plane ticket.....there was no "note" or flag placed on his passport, the BPO was very nice and told him that he needed to go home and apply for the K1....

Most people that have a job, an apartment and significant ties to Denmark can come and go without a problem. I am 49, Lars is 57 and retired.....we were extremely blessed to be able to take the year that we did and travel, but we had no real significant ties to anywhere for a few years and the lack of a Danish address or a job in Denmark was a big problem for him that day. I don't know what kind of criteria they look for at the POE's....I have read that it is totally at the discretion of the Border Patrol Officer if they will allow entry, accept your documentation or explanations or not. We had been back and forth to the U.S. since 2006 but we usually fly into Memphis or New Orleans.

I proof read what I have written and I didn't really answer your question but I don't have an answer. He was denied entry because it looked exactly like what he was doing.....immigrating to the U.S. Now we are doing it the right way, but paying a price for our ignorance of the law. He cannot come back without a visa, so we wait. I'm going to try to go to Denmark in May - who wants to go with me??

Wow, yes 3 US/Denmark couples in March- let's hope that makes us lucky somehow!

Is anyone else using an immigration lawyer? Ours has been beyond frustrated.

Also, not to be too intrusive, but would you mind sharing when you think you will realistically be getting married? I was planning for our October wedding until our lawyer casually told us the back log is longer than the 4 months (that's what he'd told us in December sad.gif

Blessings to every couple who are going through this process.

THREE Danish couples, all in March?? I think that is incredible! I hope we can all meet sometime!

Agreed! I hope all is going well with you, we received NOA1(with a typo), and are just playing the waiting game now.

Jon

Waiting.....just finished talking on Skype tonight. I will probably go to Copenhagen for a few weeks in May. Our NOA1 is expected this week - I just hope it goes fast for all of us. Lars and I had lived together for a few years, here and in Europe. Back in October he was denied entry to the U.S. because he had been too many times last year. This forced separation has been tough! We are staying positive but some days are tougher than others.

Did he get denied because he did not stay in Denmark for twice as long as in the US during a given year? Or did he just visit too often for the CBP officer's liking? Did they explain anything at all about it?

Thanks, Jon

We were hoping for a summer wedding but what we'd like now is September 9th....I really believe that Vermont will pick up soon and that we will move along quickly. Bottom line is we really haven't made any real wedding plans. Of course, we are older than most and aren't having a big event anyway.

Hey All,

We just filed on the 11th of March at the Vermont Center, still waiting for NOA1. Best of luck to everyone. Anyone else from Denmark/Atlanta?

Jon and AK

Denmark / Mississippi - and we go to Atlanta regularly!

Hi everyone! After two false starts a few months ago, we finally have it all together and I just dropped the package off with FedEx! I'm thrilled to have begun the journey! Good luck to all of us!

I'm not sure what you expected. This is a multi-cultural site and believers of all flavors are here, not just the Christian Believers.

My apologies for ATTEMPTING to state something positive to Christians out there. I just wanted to encourage fellow Believers in BEING married and not just GETTING married. I'm not attempting to discourage anyone for praying for the visa process. Also, it was not an attempt to prosthelytize anyone from any other philosophy or "persuasion". Replies are defensive and even irrelevant with a religious joke. My bad, peeps! :bonk:
