Can you actually get a US passport same day? If so where, so I can do the same once I get my certificate (crossing fingers by end of summer).

BTW - congrats and enjoy your ceremony.

You can. They don´t spell it out completely at the State Department website (http://travel.state..../hurry_831.html) but you can.

What you need is the following:
- All the docs you need anyway to apply for a passport the first time.
- To go to the DC office (maybe other ones that print passports as well but the only one I´ve seen stated for sure is the DC office), having made appointment to go there beforehand.
- To have, on the date of the appoinment, a travel itinerary (booked ticket) or a letter from employer showing that you need to travel within 14 days.
- To pay the expedite fee.
- To be willing to spend a whole day waiting for your passport. Literally waiting.

I´m wrapping up work in TX on the 12th and am planning to fly to DC that evening from DFW. The following morning I´ll show up at the Icelandic embassy and renew my passport (that would otherwise expire in October) and then at the state department at 11:30.

In the afternoon/evening I´ll drive back home. (5 hour drive)

3 days later I´ll travel.

Only 4 days to go until I´m neutralized as my son calls it. Then mid next week I´ll need to race to DC to get a US passport on the spot and also renew my Icelandic one.

Do we get the certificate of naturalization at the ceremony?

Interview yesterday was very surprisingly quick. Entered the USCIS building 12-15 minutes prior to the appointment. Took 10 minutes to go through the people waiting in security. Handed in my appointment letter and got a number ticket for the interview. Waited for the interview ca. 5-8 minutes.

Interview lasted 4-5 minutes and then I waited for the letter with the oath date for about 25 minutes afterwards. Oath ceremony should´ve been on the 4th of March but I requested rescheduling as I cannot do it on that particular day.

It´s nearly over!

I called Uscis and they told me to send a letter telling them the problem with my zipcode, but this is going to dalay all the proccess. My Zipcode was change due to increase in population, but is the same house, and before I was always sent to The West Palm Beach office. I dont know what to do?????????

When I was doing my conversion from the Fiance Visa (I-131) to Permanent Resident (I-485) I had to do the 3 hour drivedown to Charlotte NC from Raleigh for Biometrics. Wasn´t too much of a deal, although my heavy right foot got me the bluelight special on the way down...

Really, they are maybe exaggerating the delay that will be caused by rebooking, perhaps not. So just pick the position/scenario that best fits yourself and do what´s right for you:
1. If you´re really dying to get a US citizenship tomorrow, then just do the drive.
2. If you don´t mind a few weeks delays, then just request another appointment closer to your home, if you came here
as a spouse you´ll have to wait until a minimum of 3 years of PR status is up, otherwise 5 years so maybe there´s
no hurry anyway.
3. If you like driving keep the original appointment.
4. If you really hate driving rebook.

I completely disagree. See, there are these things called student loans... "the poor" can always come up with money for school - the willingness to put life on hold and defer instant gratification from a consummerist lifestyle is a different matter.

Well, let's see...my wife is currently in a masters degree program that will cost us about $20K for the 20 months she is in the program and then some. The hope is that when she finishes, she will get a better job that will allow her to earn more money, which will eventually cover the cost of completing the program. Seems to me that this is more or less the same thing - making an investment that, over the long term, will allow you to pay off the costs with additional "profit", all while improving opportunities. I don't see a difference at all.

Well if we look at educated people then people from Western Europe, Canada, Japan and many other places would financially not be getting anything out of it. For many of the uneducated ones the same applies. I do not see it as an investment to pay fees for US beaurocracy.

I'd personally rather skip it and stay over here. The immigration costs for my wife-to-be to immigrate to Iceland and in a few years be able to roam around the whole of EU freely is a total of $90 dollars! Yes you heard it right, $90, period. She want to continue her studies back at home, and that's why we're going through this process.

And the forms filed are 4 pages!

People can complain about the "prices" as much as they want, but this is a case where many people will gladly pay whatever the price is because it is worth it. They could come out with a "$5000 price for everything" price and I would still be paying it. After all, what are you going to do? Go back home? Unlikely. There are a LOT of people who would gladly pay, and do whatever they have to do, to get the right to live and work in the US for $10,000 or more....

I'd like to say that is bull. If the cost would have been $5000 I'd have said, "well lets think about this rationally" to my fiance. $10.000 or over, I'd probably just have said that it wasn't worth it for us to live there, ever, plain and simple.

The US is a fine place to live in many regards, but also not in many other regards. If the attitude would be that way that you were to pay prices that could be said to be extortion then it would simply not be worth it at all.

Showing up to biometrics early

So I´m scheduled for my biometrics at the Raleigh NC application center (which is actually in Durham NC) on 12/15.

However there is no way I can be there. I have to be approx 900 miles away on work and can not change my schedule.

After spending 10-15 minutes trying to find a phone number for the office online, and then another 10-15 going through the horrible mess of a phone system the USCIS uses I decided to just go ahead and make a infopass appointment regarding my application at the asc.

I have that infopass on 12/09. Am I likely to be able to complete my biometrics during that appointment? Can infopass appointments be used for that purpose?

How Long Are Co Sponsor Papers Valid?

Hi, If a co-sponsor signs and dates all his paper work in November 2010 will all still be valid in March 2011 when ready for interview? (sample date)... Thanks In Advance

Yes, they are valid until the Permanent Resident (which a K-1 isn't yet) has been working for 40 quarters, which means minimum 10 years, or until he becomes a US citizen, which is a minimum of 3 years as a PR if you remain married to the person you are not engaged to for that time after receiving your PR status.

Help please,lost NOA2

Thanks for the replies!!! Do you know by any chance how long it takes to process the replacement form?
I have read some members mentioning that it can take several weeks to get the replacement NOA2, Odd you would think they could pull the info up, then print and send.

No ofcourse they can't just print it out.....that would be too easy. Beurocracy seems to be real heavy in the US, but it shares the similar traits of incompetence as governments institutions in other countries.

Me and my wife-to-be opted for the K-1. Should have gone with the IR-1 instead and make it race the K-3 through the system....

Too late for that now, now I just hope that the CSC feels like cleaning up their desks sometime before the spring.

VWP Enrty Denial

My mother was harassed a lot by an immigration officer, on her second trip within last year going with my dad(he's over there frequently for work).
She gat harassed by a a foul female officer at San Francisco, aparently of the mindset that the US is heaven on earth and that all foreigners coming in have a desire to stay there permanently.
Later that year on another trip she also got harassed at immigration and then it held my parents up for an extra hour while they were dealing with getting the officers to get her through. (The immigration officer steadfastly proclaimed that our country was not a member of the Visa Waiver Program, maybe immigration officers should get better manuals)

It is therefor not surprising that my father would wish being able to avoid having to go to the US if his work didn't require it of him every once in a while.

VWP Enrty Denial

I was denied entry to the US, in, US immigration Dublin, and sent home. I would not advise anyone to travel through Dublin. I have been reading, that if you have been denied entry, it may take a further 12 weeks after the interview for them to investigate the nature of the refusal. The officer did give me a sheet of paper with a code on it section 212(a) (7) It may help to move things along, i don't know? I had never overstayed my visa or done anything wrong, they just thought i was spending too much time there and not enough in the UK.

If you get a reusal of entry, you loose your right to use the VWP again and it is virtually impossible to get a B1, then too.

Has anyone out there been in the same situation as me, and if so, can they tell me if we have a very long wait ahead. Our application is in the NVC now.

That is horrible. Some Immigration officials can be a b***h. I went to the US 2 in 2005 and 6 times last year. Staying 7-13 days each time, basically all vacations and days off from school I could possibly get (and extending them by a day or two each way).

Only on one occation the immigration officer was in a bi**hy mood and send me aside for further inspection. Otherwise everything went fine. After that though I carried a letter from my employer and school saying that I was their employee/student on subsequent trips, but never came to needing it.

Fee Changes inviting illegal immigration?

I guess most anyone who is starting this process (like me) has noticed that the fees for all applications and services will increase dramatically as of July 30, 2007.

As for me, I have just moved back to the US in June of 2007. (I lived in Russia for the last 3 years.)
After deciding that we wanted to try living here, my girlfriend came to see what she it and make a final decision for herself.
(She's a Russian girl from Turkmenistan and wanted to visit the US, but never really wanted to live here--and is a bit apprehensive about our Soviet-like security measures.)

At this point, we've decided to try to get a K1 visa. We could have gotten married in Russia, but that still meant that I had to come here and she'd have to wait there forever for some bureaucrats to do paperwork. (Russia has more bureaucracy, but we know how to make things go faster there.) Theoretically, a K1 visa would separate us for a shorter time; thus a more viable option.

Actually, she still has a valid B2 visitor's visa. And with these new fees, and us moving and being unemployed temporarily, we were quite tempted to just marry here on her B2 visa and file for a change of status that way.
(A Change of Status now costs $325, but after July 30, 2007, it will cost $1010. That adds up fast with the other K1 fees.)

So I want to both ask for advise on my situation and ask what everyone thinks about this leading to higher rates of people entering the country illegally to marry.

[Yes, I'm aware of visa fraud and all penalties. My girlfriend and I had the same discussions with USDOS consulars and with ICE officers.]

The amount I'll need to dish out for the I-765, I-131 and I-485 just increases from $675 to $1575, as I'll be filing a month "too-late" for moving to this godforsaken place that the US is.

I almost feel like dropping the move...this is adding insult to other already annoying factors.

I-134 Oath or Affirmation of Sponsor.

I'm filling out the I-134 Affidavit of Support, got down to the part where there is an Oath or Affirmation of Sponsor. Do I have to sign this and have a notory witness this? I don't understand this part of the form? Any help would be greatful. Also I was reading where people are talking about a positive income to support your new partner. I am self-employeed and just getting my business off the ground. This year I had a $1500 negative income after deductions. But I feel I have plenty in stocks, and bank accounts to support both of us. Should I worry about this, and would I need a co-sponsor? I think I have plenty of property, money, and stocks.

Hi John,

First of all, later on you will need to show income over 125% of the poverty limit.

As far as I've understood and we have played the game, then this amount of income will need to be shown on the I-134 and later on the I-864 when we get to that. If that can't be shown, then you will have to have 5x that amount in bank, stocks or something similar that can be put into value.

If not, then you will need to find another person to become a co sponsor and also fill out that form.

And yes, you will need to sign this and then get it notarized.

How many days from K-1 interview till visa issuance?

My fiance got his visa within 5 business days. You are right around that time, so hang tight & be patient. I agree with you, if you don't get it by Friday, to give them a call.

Didn't you get a slip of paper of who they are using to ship it back to you? My fiance got a sheet that said it was coming via DHL, and a tel # to check on status, and web site too. Maybe check that out to see where your package is?

Nah, the one who carried out the interview just congratulated me on the upcoming marriage and told me I'd be called when the visa was ready to be picked up, that it might be a few days.

You are correct, but only N. Ireland is a part of the UK (the six counties in the north of Ireland that form part of the UK). My parents are from a part of Ireland that isn't, and never was, under British rule, referred to as Eire. Only an Irish passport will be granted if you were born in or have parental ties to Eire.

Uhm well, for a while all of Ireland was under British rule, every last square inch of the island, although only N. Ireland remains so.

The voters believe all the lies and it's sad that they do. My mother in the UK had a full hysterectomy at age 92 and had her broken hip fixed 2 years later. She lived in a really nice residential home for 15 years and it was all free. The right wing in the US tell the story that anyone over 55 is left to die in the UK or is subject to a death panel. I can't believe that the US insurance companies can spin these stories and are believed - but they do and they are. My USC wife's family believe ALL those stories and think I am lying and being anti-American when I tell them how it is in Europe. I am sure now that Americans will continue to be cannon fodder to big business while believing their country is ahead of all other countries in all things and with no exceptions. I suppose it is some comfort to think they are part of 'the best country that has ever existed in the history of the world' while they are dying in pain and poverty as an insurance - denied person.

This is the one political issue I feel strongly about and I feel guilty that I have an escape door and the rest don't.

I've got two, the other one is the monetary black pit called national security. As far as healthcare goes I only feel bad for the ones that are for single payer healthcare but can't get it passed. I don't really feel sorry for the ones that go on about death panels and other horrors of single payer systems such as the myths of decade long waitlists etc. In my mind they deserve the mess they want, my mother in law included.

Until the U.S. has free universal health care, there is no way I would give up my U.K. Citizenship. It could mean the difference between life and death or at least being reduced to abject poverty. My red passport guarantees that can never happen to me.

I like life in the U.S. but only so long as I am reasonably healthy and the insurance is paying up. I feel sorry for Americans who have no safety net were things to go badly wrong with their health and the insurance company stops coverage or wriggles out of the contract...

Most Americans simply refuse to think about it. My USC wife is deeply aware of this reality and plans on doing 3 years in the U.K. and getting a red passport when she early retires. She lived there for a year and didn't pay a cent - or even a penny. It is worth literally millions of dollars or even life itself in some circumstances.

If the U.K. started to refuse dual citizenship I would withdraw my U.S. Citizenship application right now. I reckon a lot of Canadians would too from what I have read.

That's exactly how I feel. If I, my wife (who was born here) or any of our children ever get terminally ill I/we are out of here ASAP. I'm not bankrupting myself here because this country has a lot of silly people that don't get it how universal coverage gives a peace of mind and simply for the most part takes healthcare concerns out of the picture.

I have a friend in a German jail. He became a US citizen before the German law change of 01/01/2000 allowed for dual citizenship, provided a BBG had been applied for and issued before taking the oath. He assumed that nobody would ever know and continued to use his German passport when entering Germany. He temporarily moved back 18 months ago, and got a job. About 8 months ago he was arrested and prosecuted as an illegal alien who worked without authorization, pretending to be a German citizen. One of the charges was document fraud. He was sentenced to 1 year in prison and will be deported to the US once time is served. He will also never be allowed to visit his old country again.

Wow, I guess it´s good to be from a small country then...

Today Iceland does officially not care if you have another citizenship, or 10, but back when it was illegal to have another one it was one of those 'naughty, naughty´ slap on the wrist kind of offenses.

Just out of curiosity, this BBG process, is it relatively hard to get approved or relatively easy?

I have one more thing that I've always wondered. Let's say we become US citizen after the oath. But how does the country of birth knows that we are now citizens of another country? Do we automatically abandon our old citizenship once we become a US citizen? I mean many of us are still having the passports from the birth country. I just wonder how would this all work out by itself.

In most cases your home country will never know unless you tell them.

Passports are the property of the countries that issue them, not the property of you as the passport holder.

The US does not confiscate your old passport, and even if they would you would in most cases be able to contact the embassy of your home country and ask to get it back or get a new one.

Do you have a SSN card that says "Valid For Work With USCIS Authorization Only" or any such clause in typewriter style fonts across the face of your card?

If so that is a very, very likely candidate for her "Suspect List". "Suspect List" being her misunderstanding of what the clause means. By the way if you have that on your SSN card this only means that you need the SSN card & a valid Green card (or extension letter) to be allowed to work.

It could also be that you are marked as a non citizen and her misunderstanding that as "Suspect List".

But in any case I doubt the USCIS would share lists of people suspected of anything with the SSA. They´d just go ahead and report you to ICE (Immigration or Customs Enforcement) or check your case themselves.
