Once I start taking French class again (who knows when that will be), I know I won't be able to rely on my husband to help me with anything. He always gets so huffy whenever I ask him what something is in French. Fu*k it. I'm not asking him anymore. I'll just look the word up on WordReference.com and hopefully get help from friends or somewhere else. mad.gif

My mother-in-law does not speak any English and our toddler-aged nephew probably won't be able to speak it until he's in his teens, so this is kind of a big deal, you know?

Thank goodness I at least took three and a half years of French in high school.

Forever In My Heart...

Minky

Acquired: January 1st, 2007
Departed: November 3rd, 2008

My baby... I don't have the words to express how much you meant to me. How much you will ALWAYS mean to me. You and your cagemate, Chemo, were a semi-impromptu purchase on New Years Night from PetSmart. It was on the night my then-fiancé had to leave this city in the middle of the USA from a brief visit and go all the way back to Québec, Canada, by bus. I thought that you and Chemo would be good companions during this dark and uncertain time in my life, but I never expected you to bring as much joy as you have. You were here with me when my illness became so bad that I lost my job, only to get another one and lose that one, too. You comforted me during the times I cried when I missed my then-fiancé throughout the immigration process to the tears of joy when he finally, almost exactly 8 months later, moved here after getting his visa. You were here with me through the excitement, fear, and adjustment of the beginning of married life with my fiancé turned husband. So many "firsts" that you were here for... some good, some bad... but your presence has made the good ones fantastic and the bad ones bearable. Why did it have to be now that you had to become so sick and have to leave us, when everything was finally falling into place? Were you only meant to be with us through the chaos? Will you stay with us in spirit and be our guardian angel rattie?

Thank you, Minky, from the depths of my heart, for being exactly what and who you were. I, along with Chemo and your human daddy, will miss you so very much.

I'll ask my husband what he did to get his birth certificate since he lived in Montréal. His birth certificate was in French so it had to be translated to English. I can find the person/company that did the translation if you need it.

Canada10 months to citizenship. I am going to do it.
My husband wants to pursue his citizenship when the time comes. He's said he's never really felt "at home" in Canada like he does here. Now that he's a truck driver, he wants dual citizenship more than ever since he wants to transport goods between Canada and the US. I will be very happy when he gets his citizenship because then I'm not bound by the Affidavit of Support anymore. That's been weighing on me very heavily.

CanadaReplacing a stolen Canadian passport...
Argh; I left out a chunk of my original post and can't edit it. Here's the corrected version:

As I've stated in the Vent thread, my husband was robbed this past weekend and his Canadian passport was stolen.

My husband has to send in "A Statutory declaration concerning a lost, stolen, damaged, destroyed or inaccessible Canadian passport". At the bottom of the form, it says, "This form must be completed before, and signed by, a qualified official who has the authority to administer an oath or solemn declaration (e.g. a commissioner for oaths, notary public, lawyer, etc.). If completed outside Canada, a qualified official includes a Canadian or British diplomatic or consular representative, or a qualified local official". The same thing is also supposedly listed under the "Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor" form. What constitutes a "qualified local official"? Is he pretty much going to have to go to a Canadian Consulate to get this thing completed, or would a US Notary Public work?

CanadaCanadian Guilt?
No, although I may be biased because we went through hell in the K1 process with Montréal.

Does anyone else feel a little guilty sometimes, thinking about how easy we generally get through compared to the nightmares we read about in the Central and South American consulates, not to even MENTION the MENA (Middle East, North Africa) area? I mean, the worst things we have to worry about is a couple-month backlog at Montreal and accidentally leaving the US without an AP document! That's like nothing! Do we have it too easy? :)

I highly recommend persuading your husband to be come a suga daddy. When my wife started making all types of monies I noticed that my stress level dropped significantly haha :)

I should, considering he's been the cause of about 70% of the stress in my life since he's been here. I'd be THRILLED if he would do something to reduce that.

*headdesk*

Husband: The date on my green card says it expires on the 11th, eh? (he was driving at the time, which was why he asked me rather than looking at it himself)
Me: No; it's on the 8th.
Him: O...k. I have to pass through [some place I don't remember] and they'll look at my green card.
Me: You have your NOA1 that extends your status for another year.
Him: I forgot to bring it with me.
Me: ...
Him: It's ok; they'll see that I'm legal when they look up my status in the computer.

I SURE HOPE SO. He's in El Paso right now, and I have absolutely no way of getting his NOA1 to him if he's detained.

They say death comes in threes...

In September, it was my maternal grandfather.
In November, it was my paternal grandmother.

Now, it's my dear Uncle Dale.

I never got to see him often because I lived in the Midwest all my life and he and my aunt lived in Pennsylvania, but we got along SO well the few times we did get to meet up. He was so awesome. We had this inside joke because we both used to be so gluttonous: "We do not eat to live; we live to eat!"

I'm not a Christian, but I hope, if there is an afterlife, that it is good to him.

At least he's not suffering anymore.

Ugh. -_- If my family could stop dying now, that would be wonderful.

I'm still upset about my husband's passport getting stolen, although I'm thankful at the same time that the situation isn't worse than it could easily have been (like him being injured or killed or us having to replace his green card again). This is going to be such a huge headache to replace, though. He was in Dallas, TX, when this happened, and there's actually a Canadian Consulate there, but my husband left last night on another run. He said that he'll stop in the next city with a Consulate in it and get everything done, but I really worry about him being able to get his CDL renewed and getting into the field office for his biometrics without his passport. Plus I'm worried about how big of a hassle it's going to be for him to travel across the border from now on since he'll be flagged in the system. He was planning on doing a lot of USA/Canada runs once he got his 10-year green card.

Is it wrong for me to be so upset with him? I know it's not his fault he was robbed, but it makes me so angry that he doesn't take better care of his important stuff. We've already had to replace his green card once... you'd think he would have learned his lesson then, but no. He kept his passport in his vest pocket in the front of the truck instead of keeping it in the back sleeper with him.

My husband was robbed last night. They broke into his truck last night WHILE HE WAS SLEEPING IN IT. When he woke up, he found his truck doors open. They could have easily killed him!!!

They stole his vest. His passport was in it.

What is he going to do if the DMV refuses to take his extension letter so he can renew his CDL?! He's already made a police report with the cop that came out to the truck stop and called some "Canadian Emergency Line" for citizens out of the country. Does he have to do anything else, other than apply for a replacement passport? How do we do that?

How is he going to get in to do his biometrics?! He needs he passport to be let in, doesn't he??? I have a copy of his passport biography page; will that help?

I can't believe this. Thank gods nothing else was stolen (he had an Xbox, TV, his wallet, and other stuff in there), but still... he still needs his passport for immigration stuff!!!

I can't stop crying. :crying: :crying: :crying:

If it wasn't for the immigration issues, we would have been divorced a long time ago.

(editing to add that NO, we did not commit immigration fraud; we went through this because we love(d) each other and wanted to be together. It was definitely a bona fide marriage and I have all the paperwork to prove that. It's just that I've discovered the hard way that we are not compatible at all as husband and wife, and I had no way of knowing that until he was actually here.)

Hey, all. It's been a while.

The time has come to file for my husband's 10-year green card, but our marriage is on the rocks, to put it very mildly. A big part of me doesn't even want to file but I don't know if I'd be able to live with myself if I didn't because I know it would destroy him to have to go back to Canada.

I have never in all of my life met anyone as financially irresponsible as him. In the past 4 months alone he has overdrawn the bank account by over $1,000. I only work part-time now because of my poor health and he was unemployed all year until he got a trucking job in August, and now he brings in even less than he did on unemployment after deductions.

I don't even know where we're going to come up with the money to file, anyway.

There are a lot of other issues, but this is the one I'm the most p*ssed-off about right now.

Good luck with that Necrotica! I live too in Missouri, and I had all my paperwork plus the 1 year extension letter and one office wouldn't let me renew my license. They said I needed a "sticker". I made an INFOPASS appointment that day, and the immigration officer said there is no "sticker" and rolled his eyes. He was really annoyed. Anyway, he ended up taking my GC away and stamping my passport with a one year I-551. I took this to another office and they gave me a 1 year license without any problem. I didn't go to the same office. I did ask at the new office if they would have just taken the one year extension letter, and they said yes. If all else fails, get a stamp on his passport, and go to another office! As well, another VJ'er from MO also had to renew and the extension letter was fine for them.

This makes me feel better. Thank you!!!

My husband got his NOA1 for his removal of conditions today. Now he needs to go to the Missouri DMV and renew his CDL since the expiration date on that is the same as the one on his green card. Both of us are very nervous about this. When he applied for his Missouri drivers license after losing his Kansas one after we moved, the local DMV office refused to accept the I-551 stamp in his passport despite it being on the list of acceptable documents of proof of legal residency. He decided not to argue with them and decided to take his chances and wait until he had his green card in hand before finally getting his license. That's not going to be an option this time. His whole career now is driving truck, so he HAS to get his CDL renewed or else he will lose his job.

He's going to the main DMV office in downtown Kansas City this time and will take the "approved residency documents" list off the DMV website with him. He's going to try with the extension letter first. I'm hoping they just accept that but we're aware he might have to go to the field office and get the stamp again since the NOA1 doesn't seem to be on the list.

This will be a big load off of both our shoulders once his CDL is renewed. We've been stressing over it for months.
