G'day G'day,

I went through the same thing. I had to wait to get our marriage certificate and then you need to change your name with Births, Deaths & Marriages in your state, mine was the ACT. If I remember right it didn't take too long, and they send back your marriage certificate along with your name change document. You'll be using this document for most of your USCIS filing so hang on to it.

Next time I went home I changed my name on my passport and my ACT drivers license and medicare, and the bank etc. All required that name change document from BD&M.

Hi,

I'm a little confused...again, I entered the U.S on a K-1 visa from Australia and we got married a week ago, I'm waiting on the marriage cert, so we can begin the Change of Statue, (which looks a little over confusing but I'm still reading though the forms)

My Question is do I need to and how do I let Australia know I'm married, I'm guessing I would need a new passport as it doesn't make sense to have my maiden name on the passport and my Green Card (once approved) in my Married name.

I'm only assuming my married name will be on the Green Card?

Yahoooooooo, I'm officially a US citizen.

Had my interview on Monday Dec 13 at 9:40am at the Honolulu office. As I was travelling from Maui I was told if I pass the test and my interview goes well I can do the oath that afternoon.

I was so nervous all morning I couldn't even eat breakfast. I arrived about an hour early, just to make sure I knew where to go, and sat outside going over the civics questions for the 1000th time. I swear I was answering the questions in my sleep the night before.

So to the interview. After going through security I was told to take a number and wait in the waiting room. I was number 26. There were about 50 people altogether getting interviewed that day, most from Maui. So then it's my turn. Take a deep breath....

Interview went really well. The IO didn't ask to see any of the stack of papers/evidence I had brought with me. Just asked a few general questions and confirmed the answers on my application with me.

Then onto the civics test. My questions were:
What is one right or freedom from the First Amendment?
If the President can no longer serve, who becomes President?
There are four amendments to the Constitution about who can vote. Describe one of them.
What is one reason colonists came to America?
During the Cold War, what was the main concern of the United States?
Who is in charge of the executive branch?

Then had to read one question - I totally can't even remember what I had to read.

Then had to write 'Mexico is south of the United States'.

All good, he said congratulations you passed the test and interview. That's it, in and out in about 10 minutes. He then told me to wait outside for instructions on the oath for the afternoon.

About 10 minutes later another IO came out with the info for the oath ceremony at 2pm that day. He siad to answer the questions on the back of the form before I arrive and bring my green card. He made a joke about the questions because usually there is a lapse in time from the interview until the oath ceremony. But since I had just done my interview that morning he said please try not to get divorced, remarried, don't go rob any banks or get speeding tickets etc between now and 2pm. Made me laugh.

Came back at 2pm, got all checked in, handed over my green card and went into the ceremony room. There were 36 participating in the oath that day (obviously some of the 50 that got interviewd didn't make it). And then before I knew it oath was done, got my certificate and I'm officially a US Citizen. Was such a big moment of excitement, relief and knowing I never have to deal with the USCIS again. It's been a long 8 years dealing with those buggers. Then off to the bar downstairs for a cold beer or two. Ahhhhh :-)

So back to Maui to celebrate with everyone, including hubby, who unfortunately had to work and couldn't come over for my interview/oath. But was very excited just the same.

Got an appointment to apply for a passport on Friday. Went to SSA to update my status this morning.

So good luck to anyone who has yet to finish their journey. It's totally worth it :-D

Ok finally some movement on my case. I called customer service on November 1st and they started a service request to see what's going on. Yesterday I got an email and txt saying my case has been transferred to my local office and an interview will be scheduled. I was really starting to worry that my case had been 'lost' on someone's desk. Hopefully my interview letter will arrive in the next week or so.

Thanks Just Bob, you're awesome and have helped sooooo many people on their immigration journeys. I enjoy reading your posts :-)

With very few exceptions, Canada being the only one I'm sure about, every country among the 251 we now have on this globe requires it citizens to identify themselves as such when on their soil. So even the United Kingdom, one of the most liberal countries and an open advocate of multiple citizenships, requires U.K. citizens to pull out their red passport when arriving and leaving.

The U.S., which does not recognize dual citizenship, requires the same under the thread of prosecution.

Thus, you need to leave the U.S. showing your U.S. passport. You will enter Kangarooland with your Aussie passport.
You will leave Aussieland showing your black passport again, and enter the U.S. with your blue one.

Outside your two countries of citizenship, you can choose what you want to be. For example, if I were to enter Iran (God forbid), I would do that with my German passport. If I were to travel to Israel, I'd choose to be an American.

Hi,

I just became a US citizen last December, so I'm now dual Australian/US. My question is when I travel back home to Australia and then back to the US which passport do I use when?

When I leave the US, do I show my Australian or US passport?

I know entering Australia I use my Australian passport. Do they need to stamp my US passport to prove to the US I was in Australia?

When I leave Australia I use my Australian passport. Do they need to stamp my US passport to prove to the US I left Australia?

When I return to the US, I show my US passport but if there's not a stamp to/from Australia because I entered Australia with my Australian passport, will they care? Does it cause problems/questions?

Any advice from others that have been through this situation greatly appreciated.
