CanadaIt really finally got to me

I have to admit..I thought it would be easy doing CDN taxes when I left for the US in Oct 2005.

It is not.

1. I am with a green card a non resident of Canada as of Dec. 31, 2005..right?

2. I know I should multiply numbers by 75 per cent right...273/365 x 100 =75 per cent.

Do I use this for all numbers? Federal Taxes to be paid? I have looked at the Emigrant guide online and still don't get it.Bad for a guy with a business degree....sigh...

Best

Kev

HI i am an accounting forth year student and i just have some tax course, maybe i can help u here..
first. since u have been living canada more than 183 days in 2005, u should be considered as a deemed resident of 2005 in canada. the residency rule of canada is no matter which country u r from if u live in canada more than 183 days u r a resident. for example, if u r an american citizen but u r working in canada all year long, u r a resident of canada.second i think u should claim all the tax from jan till oct( the time when u were in canada). the income u have made after oct shouldnt be included. hope this can help or u can ask some tax specialist on this issue.

Canadarcmp told me 3-4 months for police check...???

i did both rcmp and city police certificate. isummited my fingerprint in last sept and i got it back around last nov. and i just had my interview at march31, and i brought both of them. the lady there told me rcmp certificate is the best...but she didnt say the city police certificate didnt work, but they would prefer a rcmp fingerprint check certificate from what i think. however, my suggestion is if u have time, do a rcmp certificate, it will support u better:D

How'd the interview go? :) And can you update your timeline? :)

yeah it was great!!!! pretty smooth, actually today i just got back from montreal and now i have the immigrantion visa on hand. and i will probably write my experence tomorrow, good luck to everyone!!!!

Canadamy CR-1 experience in Montreal
hello all, just got my cr-1 visa and now i want to share my experience with evreyone, hope this may help ppl who will be interviewed in montreal.
first, just a short description about my timeline and my situation. i am a chinese international student in canada and 2 year ago i met my love of my life online. he is working for the US amry and was stationed in korea. we have been crazy about eachother since the day we met online. then he flew to ottawa to visit me and proposed to me and i said yes. in short, after a couple of times visiting eachother, at oct12th 2005, we got married at city hall here in ottawa. the next day we submitted our i 130 form to US embassy in ottawa. the lady there helped a lot and she said since my husband is a soldier, we can make the process time much shorter. they copied our documents and send them directly to montreal. after 2 to 3 weeks, i got the ds 230 form and a checklist from montreal. hmm, since i cant leave before april, i didnt hurry to mail it back. i think i mailed my ds 230 at mid nov.....then it was a long wait..i kept calling montreal every 2 or 3 weeks to see if i get an interview date....finally, around late feb, they told me my interview date is march 31 9 30...i got my interview letter and medical etc almost 2 weeks later. then i finished the medical exam...it was pretty easy.but since i had been living in china before i was 19, and i didnt get any shots in canada. so i dont have an immunization record. the doc had to give me a few shots plus theblood test.......that was a painful memory for my armlol....
anyways here is the second part, the interview experence. well, i was pretty busy at the interview week( it was a friday) i got finals on wed night and thursday afternoon. after i took the exam on thursday afternoon, i took greyhound to go to montreal, just takes 2 hours and 20 mins. then i lived in a family's friend' house. the next morning, my friend dropped me off at the US consulate. well, the security is SO STRICT!!!!!! My reconmendation is just take any related documents with u, any other things, NO. But in case u have a lot of things to take with u and u have no place to put them., u can put ur stuff in a coffee shop across the street, they charge u 5 dollars for it.but anyways....no choice. i know there are a few malls there but most of them open after 9 30 and u want to be there early, so maybe a coffee shop is a better choice. then i went thru security and took the elavator to floor 19. there were alot of ppl there waiting at the cashier to pick up a number. here is another tip, they have actually two line for the cashier. one is for non immigrant the other is for american citizens and immigration visas. go for the immigration visa line, itis a priority line and itis much faster( but first i didnt know it:P) anyways i waited a long time to get my number cause i was in the wrong line. then i got the number and i had seat and waited...almost like an hour, they called my number.( there is a electronic board in the middle of the room, watch it then u will find out which wintow u should go to) anyways i went to the window, and here came the lady to ask me for my documents and she did a quick check to them.oh yeh, also she asked me how long u ve been married. when she was checking my financil support form., she said w-2 was not good enough..usually u should show them form1040 but she told me should would talk to others to see if they can accept it. then she asked me to pay 380 dollars so i run over to the cashier again and paid the fee. then i returned and she told me to have a seat and they would call me again. so i found a seat but i was stressout about the tax form thing cause thats the only thing seems not good enough. hmm about another 45 mins, they called me again and this time i got interviewed in a room. here came the main play actually...luckily, the guy who interviewed me is much nicer than the ladylol he is so so so nice!!!!!!i almost wantted to hug him, hehehe. hmm first he asked me, mm is ur husband name Ian, i said yeah but he likes to pronounce it as I in Ian cause he is part scottish. then he asked me how did u meet, i said online. he asked where was him that time? i said south korea. he asked when did u first meet. i said last january. he flew here? i said yeah and then we met another couple of times. and i offered him to see our wedding pics. i could tell he likes it a lot. even i said do u want to see more, he said itis enough and he didnt ask for anything else. then i asked him about how to get a SSN as fast as possible cause we cant buy the house we want if i dont have it. he said i am not too sure and then he checked with others and told me how should i get one as fast as possible. then yeah, i also asked him about the tax forms, he told me w2s are good enough, i dont need to worry. at the end, he asked me to take finger prints. idid it then i asked him, can i get the visa? he told me the only thing outstanding is the security clearance, my other things are fine. i was so happy and told him that i am going to fly to Oklahoma( oh yeah he told me he lived there before) at april13th, the next day after my last exam, then i can be with my husband i cant wait. he said congradulations, good luck and have a nice weekend etc. anyways he is a very nice guy... so that's my interview. on monday afternoon, i went back to pick it up. dont need to come early this time cause they wouldnt let u in anyway. the pick up is pretty easy, just some more waiting. finally they called my name and hand me a sealed envelope and my passport. i checked my passport and see an immigration visa is there, that moment i know me and my husband finally can live together, i was so so so happy. the envelope is just some document u need to hand in when go thru POE. now just 5 days left for us to be together and we cant wait!!!!

hope this helps and good luck to everyone :D

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresHELP!

Thank you, everyone. I feel a little better now that I know they expedite. I was about to die when I saw 6-8 weeks.

hi, when u say ontario do u mean ontario in canada? i got married in ottawa last oct. and the little piece of paper u recerived on ur wedding day is like a temp marriage certificate, u also need to apply for a formal one which takes about 8 weeks. however, for my case, we used the temp marriage certificicate when we sumitted the first form( I130). the US embassy in ottawa said it is ok and then they copied my husband and my other documents then they sent it directly to montreal. ( well, since my husband is in the army, our process is quite different so i dont know if it is because he is in the army so we can use the temp certificate) however u need to get a formal copy of marriage certificate for the interview and i am very positive on that.
anyways good luck!!!
i am a cr-1er and my interview is on march 31st, cant wait for it!!! :P

oh in addition, if u do need the formal copy of the marriage certificate for ur first step, u can push it and get one much earlier. like i said usually it takes 8 weeks, but u can push it for about 2 weeks. here is what happened to us, since my husband is in the military, so he needs to get the marriage certificate to get the house allowance so he can support me after we get married. so we cant wait for 2 months to get it. then we called the city hall in ottawa and explained our situation and then the ppl there gave us some number to call. so we got direct contact with the person who deals with marriage certificate then she told us to mail her a letter with explanation why we need it urgently and my husband's army order and fees etc. we did what she said and we got our marriage certificate in 2 weeks. hope this helps.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Proceduresa question about the interview in montreal
No, my husband is not working in canada, he is just a soldier in US army and was stationed in korea. well, before we statrted, we were really confused so we thought we should go to US embassy to ask( fortunately, the US embassy is very close to where i live, just 15 mins drive). so he went there, and the ppl there were really helpful and told him that they would help him as much they can. also they told him since he is in the army, they have a way to make it much faster and gave him a copy of form I 130. Then we got married in city hall and next day we submitted the I 130, passport, birth certificate etc. the lady copied everything and had her officer ( i think) signed on the I 130 form and told us they were going to send all the stuff to montreal and i should hear something back soon. also they gave me a number to call montreal, told me that now if i have problems, i should contact them instead of ottawa. when i asked her how long it would take for the whole thing, she said when i got my DS230, checklist package, wait until dec to send it back and i should be able to get the visa in feb or march cause i cant move before april( i finish my college in april). so i got my checklist stuff 2 weeks later then i waited for a few weeks to send it back. but after that, i havent heard anything back, so i kept calling them every few weeks. and they always told me, u should expect an interview in march, anyways ur school finishes at april. so i guess they didnt really rush my case. until the last time i called, they told me the interview is in march 31. 9 30. but i havent received the letter yet, hopefully next week. anyways thats the whold thing. i think we may just get lucky and we met someone who really know how to do her work and is being responsible. thanks the lady works in US embassy of ottawa. she helped us a lot.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Proceduresa question about the interview in montreal

HI there, i do really like this forum a lot and it has given me a lot of information. i am a cr1er and i just got my interview date at march 31 at montreal. finally me and my love can live together! i am very happy and excited. here is my question, since that day is a friday, when will i get my passport and visa back? next monday? i dont want to stay there over the weekend though i dont live very far from montreal.( i live in ottawa) so what i can do? when should i expect the visa? hope someone can help me out. thanks a lot.

Mandy

Hi Mandy -- can you tell me when your case was completed at the NVC? i'm trying to get an idea of how long it might take for my interview to be scheduled... thanks, and good luck with the interview! :D

well my case is kinda different since my husband works for the military. so everything is much faster. i dont think we go thru NVC, everything is done in montreal, so i cant tell when my case completed in NVC sorry. here is what happened to us, at oct 13th 2005,the next day after we got married in city hall ottawa, we brought our I130 form and other documents to the US embassy in ottawa, and ppl there copied everything then sent it to montreal. two weeks later, i got a packet contains checklist, DS230 etc. i returned the checklist and DS 230 in mid nov. and last week i called them, they said my interview is scheduled in march 31 9 30,but i havent recieved the interview date letter yet, hopefully soon. so for the whole process, i dont think my case has ever been to NVC, my case number starts as mtl( which means montreal i guess)soi think montreal just directly deal with it.
