US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 filed based on 5 years. Divorced.

This is me posting for the second time, hoping that more people will provide info.

I am applying for naturalization.

I married a US Citizen in 2007, received my green card in 2008.  Removal of Conditions in 2010.  Due to several reasons, we divorced in 2011 - a year after ROC.

My question is, will I be asked about my divorce even though I am applying for naturalization 5 years since I received my green card?

We also had trial separations in 2009 and 2010 but reconciled a few times until we finally divorced in 2011.

Right now we are good friends, although I moved to another state.

Do any of you have similar situations?  How did your naturalization interviews go?  Please share!

I was already here when I met her, I came to this country legally in 2000. We were coworkers and college sweethearts and then we got married, so all covered there. Do you think it would be a good idea to bring to the interview love letters, pictures, emails etc that show that the relationship was in good faith? I am still single smile.gif

Thanks to all who answered!

Did you have to bring these with you?  The love letters, pictures, emails etc...

My case was exactly the same, we applied in February 2010 for removal of conditions. I received the green card in May and by August we were already divorced.

Do not worry, just tell the truth and that's it.

Good luck

Thank you so much.  I am just really worried about the interview and if I will be asked many questions about the divorce.  I hope my outcome will be the same as yours.

Thank you for being so nice and replying to me right away.

yeap, the office asked me why basically the marriage failed and I told her what happened and I had the oath ceremony the same day.

I appreciate you responding right away!  Your case gives me hope.  I am nervous about my interview, mainly because I divorced my husband a few months after the removal of conditions on my green card.  I hope I am as lucky as you!

Did your divorce come up during the interview?

Well, I didn't get married to come here, I was on an F-1 visa, but was due to our marriage that I was granted the PR. And yes, that's the truth...I have never believed in "a soulmate," but rather in soulmates, one loses some in the path of life until finding one in the right moment at the right time.

Hi Esteban! How did your case turn out?

US Citizenship General DiscussionShould I write an affidavit of support for myself?

I wanted to provide an update.

I had my interview today in Kansas City, MO, and after about 15 minutes of answering questions about history and civics, passing the English reading and writing test, and verifying that all the information on my N400 was correct -- I passed!!! I am being recommended for naturalization and my oath taking ceremony is in two months!

The IO did not ask any questions about my divorce from my ex husband, other than verifying the fact that I am indeed a divorcee.  I said yes and she moved on to the next questions.

I feel so relieved and I cannot thank everyone who I have talked to on VisaJourney.com enough.  You have all been a great source of valuable information, strength and hope.

To everyone else still waiting for their naturalization, the finish line is close!!! Keep pushing forward!!!

US Citizenship General DiscussionShould I write an affidavit of support for myself?

First off, God bless you @babfela!  Your message made my  morning and I will keep the same faith you have.

I just received the notarized letter my ex husband sent me.  Hopefully, that will help in case the IO asks me more about my marriage with him.

My test is on Tuesday and I must admit I feel more calm today after reading what you wrote.  Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I will be sure to update everyone of my progress.

Hi! I decided to post here so any other person in the same boat as I was in before will get a fair idea and stop stressing.
As long as you know your marriage was legit and you are confident, you will be fine.
I was in the same boat as you, my husband divorced me 2 months after I got my permanent GC.
I took had a notarized letter from him stating how the divorce went ( he had a baby out of wedlock- and rather divorced me. Sob sob ! Lol!
Anyway I had my naturalization interview yesterday at the Pittsburgh office at 8:30am sharp.
The IO did not ask me anything about my marriage. (Bear in mind I have two failed marriages and also I just got recently married) so three in all! I was asked nothing and I mean nothing not even a divorce decree as I forgot to include them in my application ( isn't God great!) I was approved And am waiting on my oath yayyyyyyyy
Anyway don't stress okay u will be fine

PS: I have even filed for my new husband (f2a category)( 3rd one) hopefully this time I get it right as they say, third time is a charm lol
God bless everyone going through this with patience..

Don't worry about it, Just make sure they have your correct address now, Even though you have the GC you must still keep them informed of your correct address. I married a USC. she divorced me before my GC was issued. In the interview I just explain that she up and left leaving me hanging. They still gave me the GC. Don't worry about it Divorces happen. My 5 years is up and I've just received my citizenship Certificate.

Thank you! Trying my best not to worry.  I am trying to be as best prepared as I can be in case I get asked many questions about my divorce.  I was still married to my ex when my conditions were removed, and since our divorce I have not kept very many evidences of our stay together.

Thank you, hmh33! I was just being sure... I was told by a lawyer that because we divorced a few months after I received my Permanent GC that they might suspect fraud and to just be ready in case.

Has anyone been through something similar?

Our divorce decree says we separated a year before filing for ROC but this was a mistake. We did not separate till a month before our divorce was final. I have proof (lease, car title, insurance) that we were together.

tadli77Female02014-02-11 17:40:00
US Citizenship General DiscussionShould I write an affidavit of support for myself?

No, not an I-864, but a document detailing my relationship with my ex.  I think it's because we moved to another state during my conditional green card status and did not inform USCIS (we were not aware that we had to).  While we were in Virginia, we maintained our apartment in Texas.  So when removal of conditions was sent, our lawyer in Texas handled everything and my permanent green card arrived in the mail a few weeks later.

The fact that we moved, and then maintained our Texas address, and then signed a lease in Virginia after the arrival of my permanent green card -- AND THEN we get divorced 10 months later in Virginia, makes me wonder if the IO would find it confusing and therefore, suspect.

What should I do in my case?

I am still in friendly terms with my ex, and he has written me an affidavit of a bona fide marriage, had it notarized and mailed it to me.

US Citizenship General DiscussionShould I write an affidavit of support for myself?

Hi everyone!

I was wondering, should I go ahead and write an affidavit of support for myself (and have it notarized) detailing my relationship and marriage and divorce with my former husband (a USC).  Can I present this to a naturalization interview?  My ex husband also wrote me an affidavit of a bona fide marriage, which he signed and had notarized.

I married him in 2007.

CGC on 2008.

ROC 2010.

Divorce 2011.

Filed based on 5 year residency.

In our divorce decree, it states that we separated in Sept 2009, although that was a mistake.  We have records and proof to show that we were together in 2009 and 2010 up until we divorced in 2011.

My situation was pretty much the same as yours. I have only had my finger printing done, so i cant answer your question... but i hope that knowing you're not alone helps a bit haha..keep me posted

David,

I really appreciate the message.  Glad to hear that I am not alone in this.  And, yes, it does help to know that.  So, thank you!

I will definitely keep you posted!

if you are filing n-400 on the base of 5-years of residency it's shouldn't be a problem.however, make sure you have your paperwork straight, taxes for 3 years ,mortgages, utility bills etc.

This is what I was thinking, too!  I hope it won't be a problem.  I will prepare myself for the worst, I suppose.

How is your Naturalization process coming along?

tadli77Female02014-01-24 00:29:00
US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 Question. Separated then Divorced now filing for Naturalization.

I have applied for Naturalization based on 5 years since I received my Permanent Residence (Green) Card.

I was married to a US Citizen in 2007 and received my PR Card in 2008.

My husband lost his job due to the recession and since I was a new immigrant, I found it hard to find work, too.  We experienced problems with money (no income) and our marriage started falling apart.  In 2009 we tried a trial separation but we reconciled shortly afterwards.  Removal of Condition was in 2010.  My husband and I got divorced a year later in 2011.

My question is this.  I have sent my N-400 with a copy of our divorce decree.   My interview is scheduled for February 18.   Would my divorce be an issue for the IO?  The divorce decree states that we were separated in 2009 for a few months (before the removal of conditions) but as divorce decrees go ... it doesn't specify details of our reconciliation only that the divorce was granted later in 2011.

So we were married from 2007 to 2011... I was brought here by our marriage, which was in good faith.  We dated for two years before getting married (albeit, long distance with visits to each country) but I of course do not want to raise suspicions.

Are there any people out there with similar experiences?

Could you share with me how your interviews went?

I have not remarried.

I am still good friends with my ex, although we no longer live in the same state.

Please help.

US Citizenship General DiscussionTraffic violations

Hi!  At my interview, I chose to disclose that I had 1 parking ticket, 2 driving violations (one was illegal turn on red light and the other was improper lane change).  The IO asked for receipts and luckily I had printed them out the night before.  The websites for your county should make it easy for you to print them out.  She noted down the dates of each ticket on my N-400 and kept the receipts for my file.  She also asked how much each ticket was and all were below $500 but she still noted down each amount on my N-400 anyway.  After that, she told me not to worry and how these kinds of tickets were common but that she had to note them down anyway.

US Citizenship General DiscussionMy N-400 interview experience

Congratulations, suzukiwookie!!!  Your experience was similar to mine here in Kansas City, too.  The interviewer was so so nice and even though I was so nervous, she made me feel at ease.  I waited about 45 minutes before being called in and while waiting I did notice other people who spoke very few English.  One man asked me something in Korean and I told him I am sorry I do not speak his language as I am from the Philippines and not Korea.  He pointed at his form and pointed at the door to the interview rooms, and I read his form and it was his appointment letter.  I signaled to the clock and gave him the thumbs up, hopefully indicating that he was right on time.  I felt really bad because he barely understood anything I was saying in English.  It made me sad because he was elderly and he was alone.  I had to admire him for being there and wanting to be part of our country.  I still think of him, and I hope he made it somehow.

I had my interview today at the local USCIS office and it was a very positive experience!

Arrived 30 minutes before scheduled time. Was called by name by an Interview Officer right at the scheduled time. The interview took about 10 minutes. The IO was a very nice guy. They work fast and are in a hurry to get as many people through as possible, but they are very thorough.

Here are some notes from the interview:

- I was asked for passport and green card. No other documents were requested

- Speak and Write test were "Columbus day is in October"

- I got all 6 civics questions right:

   1. How many supreme court judges are there?
   2. How long do we elect a US Rep for?
   3. How long do we elect a Senator for?
   4. What did the constitution do?
   5. Who is your state governor?
   6. If the president and the vice-pres can't serve? Who serves?

At the end of the short interview, the IO said that he recommended me for approval and that I will receive a letter with the oath ceremony date in a week, and that the ceremony will be in less than 2 weeks from today - Nice and fast, like I was hoping!

All in all, a really pleasant experience!

As a side note, I saw three different people come out of the interview rooms crying... I guess they were not approved. Most likely because they did not speak English well enough to answer the Civics questions, or do the read/write test. There was a lady in front of us in the waiting room that did not speak a word of English who was being coached by her daughter on what to do when the IO says, "Raise your right hand". I'm sure the daughter did her N-400 for her.  I doubt that she passed the interview today. I'm not sure how people who don't speak a word of English expect to become an American citizen. Furthermore, I don't know how someone can live in America for years and not pick up even basic English? This is an observation, more than a criticism.

US Citizenship General Discussion90 days continous living at the same address requested before filing ?

I was in the same boat.  I moved to Kansas from Virginia when I was already eligible to file for naturalization.

I signed a lease for my apartment and changed my drivers license from VA to KS.  After exactly 90 days of living here, I applied and submitted my N-400.  At the interview, the IO asked me how long I have lived in Kansas and was able to show proof (license and apartment lease).

Good luck!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!  Well done!!!  Welcome, fellow new citizen!!!

On Mar 20th, I received Oath ceremony letter and I had my ceremony at Chicago Federal Court on Mar 26 and I'm now a US Citizen. It makes me feel so happy after year n' half struggle. I thank god, my family and every VJ member who have provided me support, suggestions & courage throughout this journey... :)

US Citizenship General DiscussionHello.... N400 delayed, Rude USCIS Supervisor, No Changes in RFE status, Congressional Enquiry

Holy #######... it's been over 45 days since my approval of N400 and I did not receive any notice for Oath ceremony, hence I called up USCIS and spoke to Tier 2 after 2.5 hrs of wait time. The Tier 2 informed me that my biometrics had expired and I've been placed on 2nd round of bio-metrics appointment as on yesterday and I will receive Oath ceremony notice after a month from my 2nd bio-metrics. This sounds crazy... Have anyone gone through this scenario? What would be the next?

I wanted to write you even if it is just to show support.  What you are going through sounds like a nightmare and I hope that you get your second biometrics done soon.  I had to go through two biometrics myself, because my first biometrics "was not clear"... I haven't even been interviewed yet. My interview is on the 18th of Feb.  I am nervous as heck but reading posts on VJ is really helping me.  Good luck and please keep us updated.

I received my passport exactly 20 days after I applied for it at our local post office here in Lawrence, KS.  I did not use the expedited service since I wasn't planning on leaving the country any time soon. It was a bit nervewracking to submit the original naturalization certificate with the passport application, but the Post Office official handling the process in Lawrence was kind enough to keep reassuring me that the certificate will be fine. She even made a copy of it for me. I was very surprised to have received my passport just shy of 3 weeks since sending the application in. The certifcate came in a separate first class envelope a day later.

It's been over a month since I was sworn in as a brand new American citizen. I certainly do believe that Visa Journey and the folks on this specific topic helped me in my journey. I can't thank you all enough. Congratulations to everyone!

Oh man, I'm so sorry. I didn't have to do that. I guess it does depend on the interviewer after all. Good luck to you and your wife! And also, CONGRATULATIONS!

Lucky you, in my case, and also in my wife's case handled by a different officer dropping the second last name was considered a name change. So I am afraid that I have to wait for a judicial ceremony.

CONGRATULATIONS, Birdo!!!

Wow, the Los Angeles Convention Center! How many people were there?

Took my Oath yesterday at the Los Angeles convention center!

Hi nlclhc!

I was in the same situation as you are.  I also had both my paternal and maternal last names, but since coming to the US I have been using my paternal last name (Green Card, Drivers License, Social Security Card, Credit Cards etc).

At my interview, the officer also asked why I was missing a name on my application (my mother's last name).  I explained to her that it is my mother's maiden name and it is traditional for us to use both parents' last names.  She said OK, and it wasn't considered a name change in my case.  The interviewer just asked me to make sure that all identifications issued in my name (passport, drivers license etc) be identical to what name will be on my US Citizenship certificate.  So that's what I did and am doing.  I am applying for my passport tomorrow and will use the exact name I have been using since entering the United States (my full name without my maternal last name).

I just requested not to quote my second last name. I am Spanish and in our Birth certificates we have both the paternal and maternal last names, since coming to the US I have been using just the paternal one, I have my DL, Green Card, credit cards and so on with just one last name. To my surprise at my interview the officer told me that since in my birth certificate and my passport I have both last names they will include them unless I want to change that. It is too confusing to carry two last names so I decided to just continue with my practice. I don't know if that is considered a name change or not, if it is I don't understand why on my GC I have just one last name and they did not care about that.

Glad Sol got her citizenship!

Sorry that the last several years has made you dislike things about America, Jon. To many of us this is still the greatest country on earth.

Thank you! It was a really good ceremony in Overland Park, Kansas. 185 of us from 52 countries. I feel very lucky because they allowed us to sit with our families and when they called our names we were asked to stand up.

This is a very happy day!

Good luck to everyone else being sworn in in the next few days and weeks!!!

I really cannot thank everyone here enough. You have helped me through my worst fears during this process and have raised my spirits... and we all don't even know each other in person. It is amazing how we were all there for each other. I hope you know how much you have helped others out there.

Trust me, I know the headache well.  My mom needs to be in the Philippines, too, since her brother may not have very long to live.   Calling and being told to call back in 30 days or so just for biometrics has made me want to pull all my hair out.  God forbid that my uncle passes away before my mother gets to see him.  In hindsight, we should have let mother fly back to the Philippines on her Filipino passport before filing her N-400.

I hope Infopass will help.  I just dread those "Come back after (insert number of days here)" replies.

If only it were that simple.

We have travel plans that are in limbo as we wait day after day for this to be scheduled. My wife's parents are both elderly and her mother is quite ill, and we am planning to travel to visit them soon, but we cannot leave until she takes the oath for fear of being away when she is scheduled.

Further, I am planning on looking for employment overseas. I cannot do that until this damn oath ceremony takes place.

If I had time to kill it wouldn't matter. But I don't.

It's all about perspective, I suppose.  Thank you for yours, Trooper.  What a nightmare that it seems you have to go through another interview.  Have you tried calling USCIS for more information?  Maybe you can somehow talk to an officer about your interview on January 29, you may not need to sit through another round of tests.

Everyone has their own tolerance level.  Other than me freaking out about certain things about my former marriage being brought up at my naturalization interview, everything went well.  My mom, who submitted her N-400 in January 2014, is still waiting to be fingerprinted.  She's scared that her application has been misplaced and we've reached out to USCIS about this but have been told to wait until March 24 and if we have not heard anything back then to call again.

We have to remember that although the immigration process in the United States seems to be run well, it is run by people who are buried in a ton of paper work.  It is not an excuse to get every one of us 'frustrated' but I guess it's always good to look at the bigger picture. Focus on the positive (passing your tests and waiting for your oath as opposed to the thousands, if not millions of people who would die to be in your shoes right this minute) rather than the negative.  Immigration is tough.  Especially in this country.  We are all testaments to this.

Wishing you luck, Trooper!  Best of luck to the rest of you, too!

You guys gotta slow down and take it easy when you use word : FRUSTRATION, because I don't honestly think that word applies to your current situation. Being in oath scheduling que means that your case has not only being approved, but already finished, just the matter of time before you get scheduled for oath ceremony, which is a one way ticket, nothing can prevent it from happening. I understand if you get approved and don't hear anything after, that's a reason to be frustrated, but being already in que, really? I don't know about that one...

Well, here's my situation. My interview was scheduled on January 29th, received another notice saying that my interview was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, but regardless I went there. My A-file wasn't transferred from NBC, but officer still conducted my interview because my local office was kinda far from my house and I guess they felt bad for me. Nevertheless, officer conducted the test, I passed, went thought my application, went thought my documents and told me that he was gonna request my A-file and I was supposed to get a oath letter in mail. I waited for a month and 2 weeks since my interview and guess what I received instead of oath letter? ANOTHER INTERVIEW NOTICE!!! scheduled in April, so please guys be super careful when you use words like: frustrated, disaster, heartbreaking  etc.. Just be happy with what you got already....
