I'm sorry you had a terrible experience getting this done, hheaven67. The good thing is that it's done, and you are on your way to the next stage of the process. Congratulations. smile.gif

Thank you Krikit! I am thrilled, the whole day was horrible & was up for about 21.5 hrs! Honestly after that experience, my criminal record check was mailed to the apartment above me as the lady doing the fingerprinting didn't type in my address correctly (it was mailed out on May 16th and thank God my neighbor had it in her recycling!) then having to get vaccination records faxed to Viljoen's office so that the medical can be completed and couriered out...I don't think the interview will be much of anything! lol

Thank you again!

Where are your husband and stepdaughter having their medicals done? Any chance they're having them in Vancouver? In Vancouver the lady at the medical office said that because Gardasil is so new that they aren't really enforcing it yet. I'm 26, almost 27 and I didn't want to have the vaccine so she simply marked on the form that it wasn't indicated or something like that. If they are going through Vancouver send me a PM and I can give you all their information including the email address so that you can talk to Laura. She's SUPER helpful! That vaccine was really a pain in the butt. I feel like they're using immigrants as lab rats and it makes me angry. The vaccine is not mandatory in any state here, nor is it required for AOS. SO, once you're in the country it's not required. How ridiculous is that? sad.gif

Their medicals will be in Calgary. I doubt the doctor there will be as accomodating. I totally agree with you about the vaccine. This is a 12 year old girl and not sexually active. Pisses me off frankly that anyone could immigrate with HPV and that would be okay. I'm not saying they shouldn't be able to immigrate-- just that it isn't fair to subject someone to a vaccine that is not mandatory anyplace in the States only recommended... I could go on a major rant ... ugh. *Biting my tongue* LoL

My 16 yr old son and I just had our medicals with Dr. Viljoen 2 days ago. I don't have any of the Hep shots, they're looking for the more common one's that all of us should have. The lab in Saskatoon didn't do the titre's test properly as they didn't test us for MMR so they just said I had to get it and that was that, paid an extra $63 for it! I wasn't impressed and the medical assistant had an attitude to top it off. My son wasn't checked either so I said that I can get proof of his MMR, they said fine, just fax it in so I just did that about an hour ago. She also didn't read the titre's test results properly so they said my son had to get a Tetanus shot...he just had one 2 yrs ago! Gotta watch these guys as that's where Viljoen makes his money! On top of all of it and being up since 3am to drive 6.5 hrs for this, got stopped by the cops while trying to find our way to get bloodwork & xrays done...she gave me a crappy map that wasn't marked properly (by her). My recommendation: if you don't know the city, get a map & see how it's laid out so you understand it. I had to call an old friend that has lived in Calgary for 20 yrs...he held my hand all the way out of the city. I just thank God that it's over! That traffic is seriously worse than LA!

PS...call Viljoen's office at 403-242-0504 to find out EXACTLY which shots are required. Get them done at your local Health Clinic as most of them are free such as boosters for Tetanus shots otherwise you'll pay $60 plus GST for each one you don't have.

Good luck everyone!

As per the DOS website (http://travel.state....grams_1399.html):

Processing/Issuing K3 Visas
---------------------------

23. Standard IV processing is followed, including NCIC namechecks, police certificates, pertinent birth/marriage/divorce/death certificates, standard IV medical exam minus the vaccination requirement, and relationship bonafides, Ref E, 18-25. Unlike K1s and K2s, the IV system will not yet accept K3 as a visa class, and so the systems processing takes place exclusively in NIV. K3s must be issued in the country where the marriage took place, unless there is no IV or NIV issuing post in the country, see Ref E, 15-17. Applicants fill out two copies of the DS-156 NIV application form; they are not required to submit the new DS-157 form. Note that neither an I-864 or an I-134 is required; K3 applicants must present the I-864 when they adjust status in the United States with USCIS. Posts should not routinely require an I-134, except in those cases where the consular officer deems it necessary to overcome any public charge considerations that might arise from documents presented or the interview

I have read absolutely every little detail when it comes to a K3 visa...

Thank you Kathryn...actually the I-134 ISN'T required, they say to have it ready, in case they ask for it. It is NOT on the checklist. What you said is what I told Jim...he will email me the doc's he does have, ie: letter from employer stating his income, 2 pay stubs, copy of I-134's (one for myself and one for my son), what we are unable to have are copies of are his income tax & bank statements. I should've known better than to tell him not to bother with copies as I would make them when I received them! So much for planning on heading "home" the following week!

Thank you again!

Canadaposted in K3 forum as well-need advice re: USPS
Hi all, this is a bit off topic but wondering if there's anyone on here that works for USPS? Or knows exactly how the US mail system works? My husband mailed me, via registered mail, the I-134's last week along with his income tax return (self-employed as well as regular job) pay stubs and letters from banks. He wouldn't have waited so long but his bank took 3 weeks to get a letter to him regarding his deposits, etc for the last year (WaMu and in the end, wasn't exactly what he asked for!) He mailed them registered with USPS and I still haven't received them yet, which I should have 2 days ago for sure! Any time I mail him anything, CanadaPost tells me 7 to 10 days and everything has always reached him within 5 days. We have a tracking number but the last detail says "left Los Angeles on June 7"....no one seems to give a ####### when he calls...(typical customer service these days!) We don't even know if they'll ask us for the I-134's as they're not asked for on the checklist but you have to have them just in case they do. That's all I don't have at the moment for our interview on Monday...thinking that if I don't get them, I would tell the Consulate officer this & forward the doc's when/IF I DO get them...who knows when that would be!
1) Does anyone know if there's anything else we can do or is it out of our hands?
2) Has anyone NOT been asked for the I-134?
3) Since it's not "required", would it be a big deal to ask this of them without a denial? I have absolutely everything they've asked for & ready to hand over all of it...

Btw, we didn't go with DHL, FedEx or any other courier due to problems we had with a courier company previously...

Thank you in advance...

Woohoo! Had interview Monday in Vancouver and heading HOME to California next week!

Showed up at US Consulate at 12:30pm, interview at 1pm...they let us in early, no problem...I was shocked at the security, worse than the airport! Vancouver airport has a Storage Consigne area, located on the Arrivals floor, that is very cheap to store a backpack, etc. We flew in yesterday morning so we didn't have a hotel room to keep anything.

First, an officer came into the waiting room and gave me a list of everything to have available in order, originals and photocopies. About 20 mins later I was called to Window B and we went thru all the documents...very nice lady I have to say. We waited for about another 20 mins, then I was called to Window 1 to do fingerprinting...had to wake my son up to get his done! lol...they had a real comfy loveseat in the waiting room & being that we had already been up since 3am, he nodded off...they all laughed. Then about 10 mins later, I was called to Window 2 were I had an absolutely WONDERFUL woman asking me stuff about how we met, which website (as she might be interested! lol), when we first met, when we got married, what did we do after (had brunch as we both LOVE breakfast & put together a patio swing!) if he has family, how much money he makes, THEY DID NOT REQUIRE THE I-134 (as I suspected and stressed about the I-134 from Jim getting stuck in Customs!) They spoke to my son for about 90 seconds, that was it! She said, "how can I not approve you? you look SO happy!" I told her that I've never been happier in my life after being a single Mom for 13 yrs!
Asked me to have a seat, 5 mins later, got called back to Window B where she explained to me what I would receive in the mail. That was it...my son & I got in the elevator and I just hugged him and cried...it's OVER and we're going HOME!
Thank you to everyone on VJ for all your help & support...may all of you have health & happiness with your cherished spouses, make every day a new day as we only have one try at this thing called life...
I will be back for AOS & EAD advice...till then, good luck & take care!!

CanadaIdentification to visit Canada next year
QUOTE (AntandD @ Aug 14 2008, 06:01 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi Everyone,

Ok, this might be a silly question, but I have to ask it anyways, especially so, if I have to make arrangements other arrangements ahead of time:

Being a Canadian Citizen now living in the US as a Permanent Resident, can I visit Canada next year (after Jaunary 2009) with any/all of the following identification, and not have any problems at the border from both the Canadian and the American sides?:
1) An expired Canadian passport (I don't want to renew my old Canadian passport, yet, as I need the extra money to pay for US immigration expenses here first)
2) An expired 2yr conditional green card, with an NOA1 one-year extension letter
3) A very outdated Canadian Certificate of Citizenship Naturalization card

Any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions, appreciated. Thanks

Ant

P.S. To anyone in New York State or any other state that offers enhanced driver's licenses (only issued to US Citizens): Have you ever gotten one of those, or considered getting one of those? If you have one, how much is it and did you have any problems crossing the border with it?

You can easily renew your Canadian Passport: http://www.ppt.gc.ca...n.aspx?lang=eng
That in itself would be enough that you wouldn't have to worry! Good luck!

CanadaCanada doesn't have my medication...
I hear ya ladies, after I had my son things were okay. Then I got my tubes tied around 10 yrs ago, as time progressed, the menstrual pain got worse every month...I finally went to my doc (after eating bottles of Tylenol-never enough to take the pain away!) and he prescribed an amazing pain killer...sorry, can't remember what it was called. I had exploratory laproscoptic surgery done in March which, thank God, didn't show anything. I finally had a partial hysterectomy in May (as I knew I needed to get 'er dun before the big move) and I've NEVER felt better!
So, if any of you are done with having kids, go for it...I had my uterus taken out, left the ovaries as they're okay and honestly, I've never felt so good! I'm not a pill popper that is for sure, and don't take anything unless I absolutely have to so it's great PLUS the monthlys are GONE!!

Hmmm....and for the first time in my life, I finally feel like I'm "home"! All my life (until I met Jim) I wondered why I was where I was, why I was in a "family" that never accepted who I was and why I couldn't ever find that job that I loved. I live in a house that is HOME, with my soulmate, my son, now have an incredible step-son and wonderful dog...the job that I love is around the corner and I've NEVER been happier. What I had known to be "home" I won't ever have to see again or ever have to see the people that I knew as my "family"...biology doesn't mean a thing! I have some wonderful friends that I will see (as they travel a lot) but the one's that can't keep in touch, never really were "friends". I am truly thankful to the angels above me, for leading me to my life path...I wish everyone all the very best and may YOU find peace & comfort in your new homes.

Canadaemployed vs unemployed
I received my EAD on Sept 19th...started applying for jobs in July/Aug (gov't jobs are a long process), to this day, Nov 19th, I've applied for over 140 jobs and NOTHING! Most employers don't even let you know what's going on with your application let alone, what happened after your interview! It's quite disgusting to say the least...in Canada, by law they HAVE TO let you know what the outcome was. I am really disheartened as I have a lot of experience and much to offer an employer...economy sucks and we're the one's paying for the mess that the bank and oil companies started! Thank God I have my wonderful husband and son by my side...I would've lost my mind awhile back otherwise!

Well I think every one has given a lot of good suggestions. Honestly though, I have heard of employment agencies being very helpful to many people I know. It seems a little off to me that three different agencies all "sucked".

If you are qualified you will eventually get a position somewhere.

Good luck.

Yup, Google ACT1 or AppleOne, MANY out there screwing people over...MANY reviews on there...I'm now VERY sceptical...please remember, this wasn't all about finding a job but about EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION...that's what I was asking VJ members about...

Thanks...

Yup, from Saskatoon....my son was attending Walter Murray...

Signed up with THREE employment agencies...most of them are a scam...weren't interested in me as my references were from out of country...they list bogus jobs and try to recruit your references! anytime I see a job posted by a recruiter, I Google them...MANY have REALLY bad reps...I discovered that too late...

I already mentioned that I've worked with my hubby's client (retired HR Mgr.) to revamp my resume to US lingo...I really don't need help in searching for work but thanks to everyone for their suggestions...it was all about the discrimination thing...I know it's gonna take time due to the economy and in SoCal things are pretty bad...have some things on the burner that I'm hoping will come thru...
hheaven67FemaleCanada2009-01-29 10:30:00
CanadaEmployment Discrimination in the US
"Perhaps you should volunteer to gain some references locally?"

I would BUT, that can get expensive as well...I don't go anywhere unless I absolutely HAVE TO...money is TIGHT, EI is hardly anything in USD and having a teenage son with hardly any child support is REALLY tough...

Regarding the discrimination thing...found another company that says they're Equal Opportunity Employers but yet one position that I'm more than qualified for says "Must be a US Citizen". I emailed them & the HR Manager said that because they work with ITAR, they have to be a Citizen. I Googled ITAR and it is documented that employees dealing with this company can be PR's. I copied and pasted that into a reply to the HR Mgr...told him I was a PR and legally admitted...NO RESPONSE (shocking!)!

Another thing about the education system...my son in Grade 11, taking Math that he learned 2 yrs ago in Canada! Also, in Saskatoon, he earned more credits as they take 12 classes a yr there, only 10 here. He has enough credits to have graduated already, even before he started school here but needs the required classes. He hasn't heard ANYTHING about Canada in his history class as of yet and looking at the course outlines, he won't be at all. I do have to say that they've been great about giving him full credits for his classes from Canada...they use the alphabetical marking system here so we'll have to get them to translate them into grade marks when he's done (as he'll probably go back to Canada for post-secondary education). Also, passing mark here in classes is 60% whereas in Canada, 50% will give you a pass.

Good luck Jen, I hope you get your foot in the door somewhere soon.

Question for you - have you had anyone look at your resume to modify it for the U.S. market?

Hi Trail...yes, Jim has a client that was in HR for 30 yrs with Verizon (was GTE) and he REALLY helped me...told me to stick with just the "meat" of each job, shorten it as much as possible...I do know (from a previous resume class) that HR depts like short resumes and really catchy Summary of Qualifications right off the bat...I wish I would've talked to him sooner! Lots of apps out there so I'm hoping something develops soon!! losing my mind here! I've been working since I was 12 and almost 30 yrs later, just not used to this! For the last year I worked 6 days/week so I'm used to being super busy...ugh! I hairdressed too professionally for 13 yrs full time then last year just Saturdays...not even any of those jobs around...honestly, I'd even work for minimum wage but this SoCal market sucks! They won't pass the budget here so State jobs are getting cut like crazy! My neighbor does the hiring for Justice Services here and she needs to hire 5 people but her hands are tied...nasty!

Hi everyone! Yes, still job hunting...I've been work authorized since September and have applied for around 200 jobs and to no avail! I know times are tough and the economy here sucks...unemployment rate is thru the roof. Just wondering if anyone has experienced discrimination "due to national origin"?? I was on the fast track to getting a job (the gal doing the hiring-her and I really clicked and out of 150 applicants after 1 day of advertising on Craigslist, she asked me to come in & fill out an app) and I have proof of the progression thru emails until the Manager questioned my immigration status, if I had a Green Card, working visa, etc. He was supposed to call me to set up a time for testing and I never heard from him. I've emailed her since but it does sound fishy...

CanadaThe Vent
So, if this is a place to vent, here I go...
Jim and I were talking how nice it would be to just be able to fall asleep together, wake up together...the really simple things that MANY people take for granted...
I'd be more than happy to take the place of a US Citizen that is in an unhappy marriage and wants nothing more than to get away! Most people don't think about how GREAT it is to be loved and in a happy marriage (thinking back in MY first marriage, if it wasn't for my son, I dunno if I even would've gone 'home' it was soooo uncomfortable!)...all we want to do is start our life together...set some goals as to what we want to achieve together (as we'll be building a house in Oregon & moving there within a few years)...almost seems like at times, it's too much to ask for...
I'm not a religious person by any means but I thank God every night for allowing me to meet such a beautiful person and have him in my life as MY husband! We have complete and total respect for eachother, compliment eachother soooo very well, it's almost freaky sometimes...how we can be thinking the exact same thing and not even be talking about it until one of us mentions something...has been like that since day one. I thank God for answering my prayer after being a divorcee for 12 yrs.. Jim is more than I could have EVER asked for/wished for...

CanadaHow did everyone meet their american/canadian significant others?
Jim & I met on Cupid.com...yes, both looking for love! He sent me a funny note, very catchy...a line that I hadn't heard before. We exchanged a few notes thru Cupid & I told him that this couldn't work as I couldn't move (my family would have (and did!) made it almost impossible to take my son to the US) but we could be friends. We both knew that there was "something" there as right off the bat, we were typing the same things to eachother in our chat window at the same time! Honestly, it was strange, we still think the same things at the same time, finish eachothers sentences, etc. We met online Feb 24, 2007, I flew (for the first time ever) to California end of June 2007, got engaged at that time, a month later was my second trip & got married the next day...Aug 1, 2007! As you see by my timeline, 11 months later and the K3 came thru...Jim drove 2000 miles to get us and we were HOME on June 29th! Over 30 hrs of driving & we talked the entire way! Not one disagreement along the way...my 16 yr old son in the back of the Tahoe watched movies the entire time.
So, after bad marriages (1 for me, more for Jim) and bad relationships & really crappy dates, I finally found my soulmate!

Nice to hear everyone's stories, thank you for starting this thread!

Well, if he knows that you're thinking about moving to the US, HE should be the one more interested in getting a lawyer and joint custody! If he isn't listed on the birth certificate then there's no proof that he is the father. He would actually have to get DNA testing done (quite expensive) and then have the joint custody order drawn up. If he knew that, I'm sure he wouldn't protest the move...more than likely he's doing this to spite you....I know all about that! Maybe you should inform him...or not! If he really has nothing to do with the child other than pay support, I would be the type to up and leave and forget about the support...it is your decision though as whatever you decide could really impact your child's life and yours further down the road...

Good luck to you!

CanadaAnyone waiting for an interview at the Vancouve Embassy?
yup, arrive only about 10-15 mins early...they won't let you in otherwise. the security there is worse than the airport...nothing but stonefaces! the officers inside are great tho...my 16 yr old son fell asleep (as we were up at 4am to fly) in their waiting room! they just laughed, asked him a couple questions, his interview lasted about 30 secs and that was that. BTW, they only have washrooms on the 2nd floor so make sure you don't drink too much beforehand! I had coffee before, had to ride the elevator down THEN go thru security all over again! ugh!

Good luck with your interviews everyone!!

CanadaAnyone waiting for an interview at the Vancouve Embassy?
I didn't think that Vancouver processed the IR1/CR1 visas...that would be why it's coming from Montreal?? I went thru the Vancouver Consulate for the K3/K4 process...with a tip, I think it cost about $25 for the cab and there are lockers at the airport as you can't take ANYTHING in the Consulate other than the required documents. The lockers are CHEAP! Seeing that my 16 yr old son had to go to the interview too, it was great being able to take stuff for him and having the locker to store it all.

CanadaWhat's the difference?
QUOTE (CdnMN @ Oct 1 2009, 01:23 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
My wife will be sponsoring my son (who lives in Canada with my EX) as her stepson. I was told that she could file for a K3 visa for him after the processing center receive the I130.

What would that do for him? Would he still need to go to Montreal for an interview to get this visa? (He live in Ontario)

Do all visa's (including a student visa) require a trip to Montreal?

Thanks

Hi CdnMN....how old is your son? mine was 16 when we went thru the visa process. We went with the K3/K4 (wishing that we would've gone with the CR1/CR2 process as it would be nice for my son to have a SSN and be able to work!)....he was listed on the I-130 then again on the I-129F, his K4 visa status is a derivative of my K3. We both had to go for the interview in Vancouver and he needed the medical, criminal background check, etc due to his age. If you need more info, feel free to PM me....

Good luck!

jen

I don't know if this has been added to the thread yet but here it goes:

Hubby calls to order pizza...."I'd like to order a jumbo pizza with light sauce, italian sausage, pepperoni, extra cheese and tomatoes on one side"...

Pizza guy, "which side do you want the cheese on, left or right?"

Hubby, "huh?"

lol....my son said, "when you get the pizza, open it up turn the pizza around and tell them that they put it on the wrong side...you want your money back!"

Too funny! NEVER have I been asked that in Canada!

blink.gif I don't get it....

Haha me either. I'm guessing they want everything but the tomatoes on both sides and then the tomatoes on only one side??

yes....but why does it matter if its on the left or right side...pizza's are round...if you spin it the toppings will go from the left to the right side. even on a square pizza that would happen laughing.gif

that is EXACTLY my point! lol....what DOES it matter???

Really?? you haven't heard of that? If one person wants one thing & the other person doesn't, you just ask for half the pizza with that topping.

CanadaHow close/far away are/were you from your American/Canadian significant other?
I was in Saskatoon, SK & hubby in Ventura, CA....that is around 3000 kms or approx. 1900 miles! When I flew here to Ventura (actually Santa Barbara most times) it took anywhere from 3 to 4 planes each way. I never flew until I met Jim...from the first time I flew out to the last time (less than 1 yr), I had 42 flights under my belt (includes flying to Vancouver for interview)! We were "officially" engaged the night before we got married so we were engaged for around 15 hrs! anyone beat that time? lol

CanadaFiling 2010 Taxes

Are you talking about filing a Cdn return or a US return?

Looks like you've been in the US since '08 judging by your timeline - did you file your exit return for Cdn taxes back then? Help us understand why you're concerned about Cdn income 3 yrs later?

Thank you Bob...I'm talking about CDN tax return and yes, most definitely have filed both returns every year till now, not sure what to do as I read that even if you have $0 CDN income, no matter what, you're still supposed to file. Just wondering if everyone else is doing the same... btw, they are completely messing with my 2008 & 2009 CDN tax returns, have been waiting since last May for them to fix the 2008 as I appealed both. They messed with my 2009 which screwed up my 2008, they approved my appeal on the 2009 and I'm still waiting to hear on the 2008 - they owe me over $3,000 but not being in Canada anymore, they don't care. Not like I can just take an hour out of my work day to reach someone and have them explain it to me, it's supposedly "complicated"! ugh!

CanadaFiling 2010 Taxes
Hi all, I received a 2010 tax book in the mail this weekend. If I don't have any CDN income, do I file at all? I heard somewhere that no matter what, you still have to file...not sure if that's right. Thanks a bunch!
