Thanks. 6-hour drive is not too bad; we're "lucky" there...

You're funny... and, I do bring cheese with me, or local beer, or... little surprises that are totally legal. That way I have something to declare to the agent and, I don't know, I feel like they ask less personal questions when I have goods to declare - probably only a feeling though.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresMarried or Maiden Name in Passport
yes.gif

You could always change it when you move to the US I guess... which I won't do, because I also have another citizenship and stuff all over the place. In my situation, not worth the trouble (plus, I have a cool name!).

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresMarried or Maiden Name in Passport
It also depends on the province, in Quebec you have to keep your birth name...

"Spouses' names

Both spouses keep their birth names after marriage and continue to exercise their civil rights under that name, i.e. they must use their birth name in contracts, on credit cards, on their driver’s licence, etc.

This rule applies to all spouses domiciled in Québec, even if they were married outside Québec.

However, women married before April 2, 1981 who were already using their husband’s surname before that date may continue to exercise their civil rights under their married name. " http://www.justice.g...ria-a.htm#names

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresTranslation of birth certificate

Hi La Souris :)
Thank you for the link, however I couldn't see what I needed on it. So I think I'm just going to get the back of it translated as well.
I will also have it notarized.
Do you think that'll be enough?
Also, the only birth certificate I've ever owned is the Quebec card-size one. From the thread you sent me I got a little confused, but I hope that's what they need.
What do you think?

As Kizza and Kimbear said, you need the long form "Quebec: Applicants should obtain "certified copies of an act" from the Direction de l' Etat Civil in Montreal (2050, rue de Bleury, sixth floor, tel:514-864-3900) or the Directeur de l'Etat Civil in Quebec City (2535, boulevard Laurier, Ground Floor, Sainte-Foy, tel:418-643-3900; fax:418-646-3255). Further information, including other locations and information on ordering by mail is available online." Source: http://travel.state....ocity_3531.html

You can print the page about the security features, or just provide the link to the page, to your translator - you shouldn't have to pay to get it translated since it's already provided by the government. :)

Edit to add: I placed the order for mine online and I got it in 10 days or so, without paying the rush fee. I got a few more copies from my translator too for a few dollars, since I suspect I may need them in the future and it was easier to have them done at the same time.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresUSCIS case status...?
Don't bother looking at the USCIS website. It is pretty much worthless. I have heard of people already having their green cards and their status was never changed. So don't worry about the website too much. And congrats on your NOA2. I also just received mine in the mail just recently.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresno NOA2!!!jan2009
Don't worry about it. It should arrive to you shortly...if you are at VSC they are giving the NOA2's for people in January now. I just got mine last week. Technically we have to wait 6 months before saying anything and then if we STILL haven't gotten anything, THEN make a stink.

And don't pay attention to the USCIS website. They don't really update it very often. Mine still says they haven't looked at since the last day of January.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresSo much information!!!
So basically, getting married in Montreal eliminates the Fiance Visa option if I understand correctly.

Any other option, there's no way to permanently move to the States as soon as Im married, even if I don't work until a Visa is issued ? And if we were to be married say in September, how long would I be apart from my husband ? 2-3 months, or something more like a year ? Meaning I should strongly consider getting married in the States so that we can do the Fiancee Visa.

There's just so much information that it's difficult to see which one is the best option. It's a bit overwhelming really, lol. I just really want to be able to plan a date and a wedding, but seems impossible without knowing what kind of timeline we are looking at with the immigration stuff.

Thanks for all the help, it is really much appreciated

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresSo much information!!!
Hello,

Im so happy I found this website!! So much good information.

I am Canadian, residing in Montreal, Quebec. I got engaged to this wonderful man from Colorado just a few weeks ago and we are really excited about the engagement and wedding.

I've been reading up on Fiancee Visas and Immigration through Relative(Spouse).

Im really curious as to what the best option is and I really could use some insight. We plan on getting married in Montreal, hopefully something like September or October.

Now we've heard we should go with the Fiance visa, but Im not so sure. And if we go for Spousal Visa, does that mean that I can't move there until the whole immigration process is done ?

Thanks in advance and I hope this is in the right forum

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresMoving my belongings to the USA
I once moved from southern Ontario to Fredericton, New Brunswick with my cat, it was his first trip and I gave him this meat-flavoured valarian paste from a holistic vet. It was supposed to take three hours to work and last for three hours, but for two days on the road my cat was such a rag-doll, pupils dialated, stretched out in the sun on the dashboard of the rental van going 100km down the highway. Sorry I don't remember the name but you can google holistic vet in your area and ask for it.
Also he/she will need the rabies vaccine, we do have rabies in canada.

BTW...cute cat!!!!

THANK YOU smile.gif I love VJ, everybody here is so kind and helpful.
And I spammed posts haha, I was so nervous the day before my interview!

ON TOPIC: I actually also sent all of what debbylyn has sent too! I even sent my Fiancé's bank statement containing the record that he bought me a ring and other records that he went to Montreal (he came to visit me) and bought some stuff.

OFF TOPIC: I know she's a cute cat! But she's such a devil inside, I hate, hate, hate her sometimes mad.gif She would scratch me out of the blue (I still have scars) and sometimes she would rub my leg for minutes until I push her away with my foot. But she's too cute to resist sad.gif Poor humans.

Hum...
My I-134 Affidavit of Support needed to be notarized. You know why?
On the bottom it says "SIGNATURE OF OFFICER ADMINISTERING OATH"

And there's a stamp of the office as a signature and etc. In the stamp you see "NOTARY PUBLIC-OREGON"

So yeah I think you do need yours notarized ohmy.gif

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresQuestion concerning full copies of original package
I don't know if I could still be of help because I had had the same problems (minus the bottom part of your first post) and because many people already posted on this thread tongue.gif

You need originals
I sent my originals and there were no problems smile.gif I heard that if you do send in photocopies (the lady in front of me at the interview had sent in photocopies) you have to go to somewhere (your nearest consulate?) to have people check your originals. You can also send originals with photocopies of originals.

Fields that are empty
When it comes to filling out forms, I am forgetful tongue.gif That's bad, especially for these kind of forms! But if you write on her form with a different colored ink or writing it shouldn't matter that much, in my opinion. On my interview date, the lady at the Consulate double-checked all my forms and I left some spaces blank! She wrote "n/a" and some "none" for me. She used red ink pens. My interviewer wasn't picky about that.

Hope I helped unsure.gif

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresQuestion About Co-Sponsor
Your daughter can be a co-sponsor if she has enough money. My fiance at that time was poor and his mother was the co-sponsor (I didn't need to worry about the poverty guideline thing because she makes enough profit).

Sorry I don't have information about how much money one does need to meet the co-sponsoring requirements.

Getting a co-sponsor is always a good idea especially if the main sponsor is in a tight spot. Hope I helped you!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresCan I marry in Canada with a K1 in hand?
I dont' know if I should start a new tread. I am starting to think about marying in USA. Thing is we want to know each other more before to get married. I was thinking to have some visa to saty a 6 monts + starting the K1 process if we decide to marry. What visa can I apply that will let me stay all that time? I already have plane ticket to go there this summer, I don't know what to do: if I can go visit 1 month and comeback and apply for a visit visa to saty until we marry.

Thanks for all help.

As descrived on wiki http://www.visajourn...dex.php/K1_Visa

Please note: Your fiancé(e) may enter the United States only one time with a fiancé(e) visa. If your fiancé(e) leaves the country before you are married, your fiancé(e) may not be allowed back into the United States without a new visa.

We want to have the celebration of wedding in Canada. What ca we do.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresWhat the purpose of K1
For what people they where create that K for. You have to marry in USA, you can't go out of the country for your honeymoon, you almost have no time for it cause you must apply for Adjustment of Status (AOS), EAD, AP. How can you prepare for wedding with so Short time? After you can't go back before 3-4 months for AP. blink.gif I choose that at first, din't started it, but I was sad that I couldn't visit my family or marry in my own country. crying.gif But I encourage all those who are putting their effort to get it done to continue.
