US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionRequesting tax transcripts from IRS
I also requested copies of our 2006 & 2007 tax transcripts. I sent off my request on 02/02/2009 and received them yesterday, 02/11/09. You can request them by phone too. The number: 1-800-829-0922

Gethere, are you in SA? If so, go to your local police station. Sooner rather than later is better as it took them a while to do it. If I remember correctly, it cost about R50.00 in 2006

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionPassport Expiry
I agree with Payxibka that it is probably easier in South Africa BUT the glitch could come if you are required to turn in your current passport and they do not get the new one back to you in time for your visa. Although last year I did contact the US Consulate in Washington DC to request how to go about getting a new SA passport now that I am in the States and the docs they said they would send me never arrived.

...I'm not sure I actually helped blush.gif

There are expediting services around the Home Affairs offices where if you pay an extra fee they speed up the process for you. For instance, I had to have our unabridged marriage certificate pronto and paid R500 to get it in 2 weeks.

Another thing on a side note that you may want to look into as it caused me a hassle here: I had to provide my driving record from the Department of Transport in SA when I tried to get a driver's license in Georgia. It was a nightmare organizing that from here so before you leave South Africa maybe get a few copies of that for when you get to the States.

A website to check out if you don't know it: www.sausa.org --> A forum for South Africans on their way or already in the USA. My whole driver's license debacle is posted there under: Lost my SA license, now what?

I do hope I helped smile.gif

US Citizenship General DiscussionFiling n400 while i751 is pending
I have never heard any of this. What I have heard is that filing the N-400 will force adjudication on the I-751. I filed my N-400 yesterday. My I-751 is still pending. The person I spoke to at USCIS said no problem to file N-400 if I-751 is still pending.

On a side note, if you filed June 2008, were you not eligible to file N-400 sooner?

US Citizenship General DiscussionWithdrawing N400 Application
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of how to go about notifying USCIS of this?

The application fee has been paid & biometrics already scheduled but I wish to withdraw my application. I know that the fee is non-refundable, but what I want to know is how do I notify USCIS? My application is being processed in Texas.

Thank you.

US Citizenship General DiscussionI Naturalized Today ~ Journey Over!
Thank you for the well wishes everyone! :D Today I am busy shredding 4+ years worth of accumulated 'evidence'. What a relief to empty out those overflowing drawers!

Ant+D: I found out that there was a process I had not taken with South Africa to retain my South African citizenship. I had to do that PRIOR to my application for USA citizenship. Anyway, long story short, I have given up my South African citizenship and am now 100% American (except for the accent :P and that feeling that Africa will always be in my heart). Ultimately, it is a personal decision.

Jasminelilly & Sunshine 78: Good luck with your Naturalization journey. Yes, I was very happy to complete the process in the same day, it was a long day, but only 1 day. Fingers crossed that you will have the same experience.

US Citizenship General DiscussionI Naturalized Today ~ Journey Over!
Hey VJers,

I just wanted to update here & provide my experience in the event that it helps someone. I naturalized today and am so happy that my journey is over!

My interview was scheduled for 9:20am in Atlanta. I arrived at 8:45. There was a small line getting through security. My interview letter & greencard was checked. Purse and documents into the x-ray tray. Shoes off, too. My metal headband set-off the security door frame thingymajig. Off with the head band and success. Went up to the second floor. As you come out the elevator, take a right to check in at the window. Very Friendly Lady there and she sent me up to the 3rd floor. Arrive at the third floor and went to the window to check in. A not very friendly lady there told me to sit near the TV and wait for my name. Honestly, I would sit in the middle of the room as there is no PA system which makes listening for your name a little stressful. My name was called at about 9:40.

My IO was polite and pleasant. When I got to his office he asked me to remain standing and raise my right hand. He swore me in and then we sat down. He pulled out my file - complete with I-751 & N400 documents. He took up my conditional Green Card and my 10 year Green Card. He asked if I wanted to change my name. He asked if I was still married, my date of birth, address, SS #, telephone number, place of work, anniversary date, confirmed my husband's name, checked the copy I sent of my husband's birth certificate. Then he went through the list of questions on the N400 application form such as: have you ever been arrested, involved in a terrorist group, are you willing to bear arms if required, etc. He did not ask to look at any of the documents I had brought with me.

After that, we moved on to the English portion of the test. I had to read: What do we pay the government?
I had to write: We pay taxes. (This sentence is provided and you are not expected to know the answer).
The 6 civics questions I was asked were:

1. When do men have to register for selective service?
2. Name 1 state that borders Canada.
3. What is freedom of religion?
4. When was the Constitution written?(be careful not to confuse this similar date to the Declaration of Independence)
5. What ocean is on the West coast of the USA?
6. How many senators are there?

He said congratulations, I had passed the tests. He asked if I would like to attend the oath ceremony that day. I said, "Yes, please!". He said that another officer would check my file and that I was to wait on the second floor. If the second officer agreed with my IO's decision, then I could attend the oath ceremony at 2pm. I waited on the second floor for almost 2 hours. Thankfully DH had brought a book to read, which I appropriated. My name was called and I collected my appointment letter for 2pm. DH & I went for lunch. It was then 12:10ish.

1:20 we return. There was a substantial line through security. Head band off this time! Went up to the 2nd floor to check in with Nice Lady. Am told DH has to wait and I am sent to an officer who checks my appointment notice. I am told to take a seat with the other people taking the oath. Waited a while, then we start filing into the oath ceremony room. We are shown our naturalization certificates, one-by-one, and told to confirm the information such as name, DOB, gender. Slow process. When I take my seat, on it is a little American flag; a book titled 'The Citizen's Almanac'; a congratulatory letter from USCIS outlining how to obtain a passport, how to notify SS administration, and how to register to vote; a booklet containing the Declaration of Independence & the Constitution of America; a paper with the Oath of Allegiance.

Not sure what time it is now but I am reading through the material and the Oath Ceremony Room is slowly filing up. We are given the opportunity for a potty break ~ accepted! Get back, wait a while longer. Finally, someone comes in and starts a video. Towards the end of this, friends & family enter the room and start taking photos. An officer comes out and starts the ceremony. She congratulates us, we sing the Star Spangled Banner, she tells us that there are 187 applicants from 50 countries present. She calls out the countries and we stand when we hear our country of origin. We take the Oath of Allegiance. We all say the Pledge of Allegiance. End of ceremony. We are told that we MAY make black & white copies of our Naturalization Certificates for our records. We start filing out and collect our Certificates of Naturalization.

3:19 I am back in my car, a United States' Citizen!

I hope I didn't leave anything out. Good luck to everyone still on their journeys!

Hi Ailema,

If you look to the top of the page of this site, there is a button 'Example Forms'. There are all types of example forms there, including an example affidavit and an example cover sheet to go with your petition ~very helpful star_smile.gif
My school has a notary but I think you should find one at your post office or police station, too? And the person who wrote the affidavit needs to sign it in front of the notary.

I hear you. Jamaica is considered international travel and like I said, I had no problem re-entering the USA ~ I stood in the US citizens' line with hubby and was told 'welcome back' and asked by the POE officer if we were playing "hookey" as we are both teachers & were traveling during the week laughing.gif . Don't sweat it & have a great time in Ireland. Will you be there for St. Paddy's Day? goofy.gif

I am in the same position as you ~ passport still in maiden name ~ and I never thought about it! mellow.gif My GC is in my married name and when I travel I just take my passport and GC with (and my driver's license for additional identification). My tickets are in my married name because my US credit card is in my married name. I don't travel with a copy of my marriage certificate although that does seem wise in hindsight. I have clocked quite a few domestic flights and in November came back from Jamaica without any incident.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionHow Many Photos??
Thank you for the replies.
I will be sending pictures from when we were dating, our travels together, our wedding, the house & pics with family & friends. Roughly, 10 - 15 should do, I hope. I have already started asking friends & family to send copies of anything they might have star_smile.gif
In addition, I will be sending copies of:

house deed
joint bank account & letter from clerk we always deal with stating when I was added to DH’s account
joint credit cards
'06, '07, '08 tax returns
joint gym membership
joint Sam's club cards
photos: dating –in Taiwan, USA & SA – wedding, post-wedding, with friends & family
3 affidavits
car insurance
health insurance
life insurance beneficiary (me as his ben.)
utilities (none are in both our names though)
family plan with T-Mobile
travel stubs & itineraries
random post with our names & address on it
donation receipt slips
our wedding invitation
letters to us as a couple from my father-in-law
AR11
W2s
Payslips with our address on it
Letter from Social Security addressed to me
Copies of front cover of magazines we have subscribed to with our address on
Copy of earnest money check when we bought our house
Copies of envelopes that contained letters addressed to me from DH when I was in SA and he was here
............................................................

Just might be too much but I think it is better than getting an RFE. The immi. site does say that you can submit as much evidence as you want. Watcha'll think? Too much??

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionHow Many Photos??
Something went wrong with my computer yesterday (an Apple IMac) and all my photos I had in Iphoto have been replaced with a huge gray exclamation mark. I do have some photos but I do not have the span that I had in a file for my application to remove conditions.
My question is this: to those who have submitted their petitions - how many photos did you include?
And anybody who has an Apple perhaps know how I can get these photos back?? unsure.gif Some of them are not replacable as I have since cleared my camera memory card of them as I thought they were safely stored on the computer!! crying.gif DH says that I am frantic and probably made a silly mistake that has erased the photos. While not yet frantic, I am concerned that we cover all our bases so that we do not get an RFE. This has never happened before with the IMac so I can't imagine what went wrong. We have had it for over a year now.

I just want to be done now with all the paperwork, legalities, keeping track, "evidence", etc. etc. & more etc....

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionHelp! AR-11
Lucky7,

I completed the online AR-11 after we moved house (this was a year before I submitted my I-751) and when I received my reminder about my I-751, it was sent to my previous address. With my I-751 petition I attached a copy of the AR-11 to the application form. There is a section you complete if you have lived in any other addresses during your time in the US.

(I hope that any future documentation from immi. doesn't go to the old address. Kinda worried about that.)

In my signature you can see my dates for I-751. VSC took a while to send me my NOA1 & I posted here too becauseI was getting worried. Another poster said if you have not received it after 1 month, then make an infopass.

Re. camping out at your mailbox ~ I definitely sympathise. yes.gif

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionHow Long Until I Hear From Them...
I have another question:

What is the deal with walk-ins regarding biometrics? I am considering trying this Saturday and if no luck, then no harm no foul. My students are testing during the period that my Bio. is scheduled and while I will be allowed to take a half-day, I would prefer not to.
Is there anything regarding this I should know about?

Thanks!

One of my concerns was getting an RFE. Is it safe to assume that because I now have a biometrics date, I won't be getting an RFE?

Thanks!

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionHow Long Until I Hear From Them...
Last night I received the I-797C, Notice of Action. Is that what is referred to on this site as the 'NOA1'?

I checked on my case online today with the receipt number on the letter and there is no record of my case.

But, I have a physical letter acknowledging that they cashed my check and informing me that my crs is extended for 1 year so I do feel a bit better.

The envelope was posted 3/23.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionHow Long Until I Hear From Them...
I sent my I-751 on the 03-03-09. VSC received it 03-06-09 and they cashed my check 03-10-09 but I have not received anything official regarding receipt from VSC. I am starting to get worried because it seems the average wait is 10 days. Or am I being paranoid?

Thanks.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionSo stressed out about blue form I-797E request for evidence
Don't panic. The advice given above is solid, try to follow it. I'm sorry for your situation but stay calm so that you can deal with it.
Can you add your wife's name to your car ownership?
Having a joint checking accout should not be hard to set up and you can request joint checks.
Look into that cheap insurance.
How about drawing up a will that states your wife as beneficary to your estate?
A joint Target, Macy's, Sam's Club account
Are you able to apply for a joint credit card? Even if you never use it.

Good luck ~ you can do it!

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionI-751 Documents
I think your list looks good just make sure that the evidence you submit spans the duration of your marriage. When I compiled my petition, I did it in sections: 2006 (the year we got married), 2007, 2008 & 2009 and then organized relevant info. in each section. I included a contents page with my cover letter.
I'm not telling you what to do but sharing what I did which may or may not be sufficient ~ I have not heard much yet from USCIS. What I got as most important from reading VJ was that your evidence spans the duration of your marriage.

Good luck! star_smile.gif

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionHow long?
Hi Joan & Roger,

Although I have since received my NOA & Bio. notice, it took a while before I received anything. I too posted here out of concern and was told if, after 1 month, I had not received any notification then to schedule an Infopass appointment. Hopefully others will respond to your post.

Good luck star_smile.gif

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionCan I travel - while I-751 is pending?
It's not paranoia when one has had unnecessary difficulties in the past.
I have certainly had the misfortune of dealing with people in power who were not as informed as what they should have been. All we are expressing is a concern.

And perhaps if you have nothing to add, then you should add nothing? yes.gif

I have the same concerns.

I am taking a trip to London this June to visit my sister. At that stage my actual green card will be expired and I will be traveling with the extension letter and my stamped biometrics notice.
