US Citizenship General DiscussionCitizenship ---When???
I have looked at the USCIS site , but somehow I can not be sure. I need to know: I will have been married to my American husband for 3 years next October. My conditional greencard was approved on July 25th , 2005. I filed for 751 in mid May , 2007. When can I file for citizenship ? This year after my third year of marriage , or next year after my third year in getting my greencard?

Thanks in advance

In the "general tips on assembling applications" page of the USCIS website, you'll find the following:

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Signature_________________________________
Date Typed Name
Address

That page generally applies to any documents accompanying any type of petition being sent to a USCIS office in the US. (Slightly different rules may apply for foreign language documents presented to a consulate abroad).

Note that it says the translation must be certified, but that's not the same thing as saying the person doing the translation must be certified. Any person who has the necessary language competence can translate and certify. I personally did the translations for documents for our own case, and I have no formal language credentials or certifications. If you're concerned about avoiding the appearance of conflict of interest, of course you might want to hire someone else to translate and certify. But if the document is very uncontroversial, and if you're sure you can translate it without misleading, you might want to do it yourself.

I see the USCIS is revamping their site soon, and the link to that page is very long, so I won't post the full link here. But if you go to USCIS.gov, click on "Immigration forms", then click on "General directions on Immigration Forms" (in upper right of the page), and finally click on "tips for assembling applications" (in upper right of the page), you'll find that text. I suspect you'll have to use some different sequence of links to find it in a few weeks after the site is redone.

In addition to translating the text, a translator also makes notes to explain any seals on the documents. Adhering to the original text takes preference over employing proper English grammar, but with over 680,000 words in the English language, you do have a choice in selecting the most meaningful word.

We did pay to have our translations done for us doing the AOS phase, just had way too many other things to do, but as things slowed down, did those ourselves with no problems.

Hello
We are applying for my wife's citizenship this month. I have a question. My wife was married before and she has to state that she was married before in the application form. We have a divorce degree in her language. Do you we need to have it translated professionally , or Can she do that ?(Is it accepted?)

Thanks

Sent my wife's N-400 via Express to Lewisville,TX. Supposed to be delivered on Monday, but not yet. We called the post office in Lewisville,TX and was told that express mail to USCIS was transferred to a different location and our mail along with others is waiting for a pick up from USCIS. The post office person said they were getting a lot of calls regarding this. She said as soon as someone comes and picks it up it will show delivered online on post office's website.
Has this happened to anyone else?
It sounds strange to me.....

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 - Lockbox vs Express
For their Express address it means you can mail via UPS, USPS, and such
We sent my wife's N-400 via USPS express , but we were not satisfied with that. We sent her papers on 12/04. Could not track online , because USCIS had the mail forwarded to another address, and we are still unable to track. Fortunately, USCIS sent her a NOA , which made us know that her papers were delivered.

Hi All.

Any advantages in filing using Express over Lock box? Does Express meaning USPS only or can FedEx be used as well?

this happened to us, too. my wife was going crazy about this fw issue, but we were told that uscis had an automatic fw address so our package fwded to the new address. for weeks , whenever we checked our tracking number, and still, it says the same thing , forwarded. my wife went to local post office, and she even called the local post office in lewisville, tx. they told her that they were getting tens of calls regarding express mail to uscis.
we sent package on 12/04, and they received it on 12/7. ( which we later found out on the noa)they sent us a notice on the 8th. so no worries

US Citizenship General DiscussionFingerprint Related Problem During Interview - HELP!
Thanks. Very much-appreciated

Whether this helps or not is a good question, http://eczemasolution.com/, looking at my fingertips, had to work on my daughter's car last week in sub-zero weather, tips are all cracked from frostbite. Guess your wife from some of he causes listed would have to be careful for about three months. My wife gets some on her legs in this cold weather, but at least her hands were okay.

US Citizenship General DiscussionFingerprint Related Problem During Interview - HELP!
Thanks so much. The reason I asked you is that my wife is suffering from eczema in her hands. while being fingerprinted, some of her fingers were fprinted a couple of times, it was on 01/6 and she is scheduled her interview on 2/24. that is why i asked you, but we did hear nothing from them.
Thanks for the info
All the best

Yes, they sent me a notice to do the second fingerprint.

I don't get the reason why they didn't inform me before my interview that my second fingerprint was still unreadable, so that I should have worked on that police clearance requirement that they want.

I don't have any idea if I was suppose to have my oath the same day if my fingerprint was okay. I didn't bother asking the IO since I was focused on the police clearance thing she was asking me to comply with.

The test was easy. It was all in the booklet they gave.

Anyway, here is my interview experience:

Today I had my interview scheduled at 8:20AM in Baltimore. We arrived there just on time and after passing through a long line, we immediately proceeded to Room 103. I then proceeded to the reception window and gave my appointment letter. After 5 minutes, I was called in.

The interviewing officer told me she will be swearing me in before I'll take my seat. She told me to raise my right hand and swore me.

She then asked me to show my passport, green card and driver's license. She then asked if my passport is the most active and current, and I said yes.

She started checking my application form and began asking and re-confirming everything I filled up on there, afterwhich she gave me the reading, writing and civic tests.

The first was Reading test. She gave me a sheet of paper and told me to read it loud item no. 1 which says; - "WHAT DAY IS COLUMBUS DAY".

The next was Writing test. She let me wrote, "COLUMBUS DAY IS IN OCTOBER."

Then for the Civics, she asked me the following 6 questions which I got them all right.

  • What does the president's Cabinet do?
  • We elect a U.S. senator for how many years?
  • How many justices are on the Supreme Court?
  • Name one branch or part of the government.
  • What did the Declaration of Independence do?
  • If both the President and Vice President can no longer serve, who becomes president?
She then told me I passed the test and gave me form N-652, Naturalization Interview Results.

Then she told me that my second fingerprinting was still unreadable by FBI and so I need to submit to them a police clearance before they can decide on my case. I told her, this was always the case that I had to go back 4 times to the USCIS just to do my fingerprints again and again...:(. She said my case is not uncommon, and many had been like mine.

It was encouraging to hear from her when she told me she doesn't see any problem with my papers and they are all OK.

She then gave me Form N-14 together with the instructions on how I can obtain the police clearance. That was all about it. I was in the room for 15 minutes.

US Citizenship General DiscussionFingerprint Related Problem During Interview - HELP!
Just curious..... When you had your fingerprints done the first time, and when they were unreadable did they send you a notice so that you had them done second time?
My wife's interview is in Baltimore, too. if your fingerprints were okay, would you have had your oath ceremony today or not?
What questions did IO ask ?

I hope someone with the information helps you.
Thanks,bradam

Hi all,

My interview in Baltimore went well, and passed my Citizenship test. However the interviewing officer told me to my surprise that my second fingerprinting was still unreadable by FBI. So, my case will still be pending not until I submit to them a police clearance.

I went to MD state police and they did fingerprinted me again. I got two sets, one with a purple color form and the other is green color.

The USCIS said I have to send the document to them but in the Form N-14 instructions that they gave me it says I have to send it to CJIS-Central Repository. I am a bit confused. And do I need to submit the original copies to both CIS and Repository?

Anyone had the same experience and had done this before?

Thanks.

US Citizenship General DiscussionI had my interview yesterday (Feb. 8th) in San Antonio TX
Congratulations........

I married to my hubby who is a U.S. citizen in 2003 and received the temp green card in July, 2004. I can't remember when i got my permanent GC. :bonk: Then i had been busy in my life (going to business school for an MBA and then trying to find a job, etc) and never put citizenship application on my agenda. Until last year, i decided it was time to apply for citizenship. I submitted the I-400 in the first week of Nov and was scheduled the interview on Feb. 8th which was yesterday.

My interview went very smoothly and lasted 20 minutes. THe officer was super friendly. It was a very informal conversation. He did not ask me to present any document except my Green Card, Passport and DL.

The speaking question was "Why do people want to become U.S. Citizenship" (very classic question, ha! :)) The writing part is "Because people want to vote." (Bingo!)

The six questions were:
1. What the name is the national anthem?
2. What does "rules of law" mean?
3. Which ocean does west coast face?
4. What happened during 9112001?
5. When is u.s. citizen able to vote?
6. Why does national flag have 13 stripes?

Now i am waiting for the oath ceremony date to be set up.

BTW, when i submitted my application, i did not include a lot of supporting materials. I only gave them copies of 3 years tax proof, one copy of join account b/w my and my hubby, one copy of medical benefit for both of us, one copy of house insurance with our names on.

Hope it helps. Good luck with the folks who will have their upcoming interviews.

Cheers,

pureland_tx

US Citizenship General DiscussionAfter being naturalized...
I must have made a mistake in adding a reply. I did not mean to reply to this post but wanted to share what happened to my wife.

My wife was naturalized on 2/24/2010, and she went to SSA office a couple of days later. She was sworn in( she was told that she was being recorded) and she was also told that it would take for SSA 4 weeks to issue a new card and to update her status. I still do not understand why she had to swear in. They got a copy of her certificate , and I should say that my wife mentioned that she had felt so restless at the SSA office in Rockville, MD. Has this happened to anyone else?

She was told that she could apply for her passport anytime and she did so on the same day which is 02/26/2010.
We will see when she will get her card .

Thanks

Hello my friend, this is my comment. You not only need to go to the SSA Social Security Administration to update your record. You need to update your record of your ID/Driver's License of the State you live, too. Besides, I recommend you to enroll right away in the Voter's registration and Please try to get your U.S. Passport right away. Why? the answer is sample. The only evidence that you are going to have that you are a U.S. citizen is updating all your important records; in a case of a loss of a record, that had happened before (nothing is perfect), you have plenty of evidence that you have U.S passport and Indeed, you are a U.S. citizen. Besides, it is important to update your SSA record, because that is the most important record with the ID/Driver's License, too. It appears there everything about your life; In case a problem, the police or any kind of application to any of the benefits to U.S. citizens can be verified right away, and it is easier to get a benefit. Remember that the 2 biggest databases in the U.S. are SSA, USCIS, and FBI. So you have updated with all this all your important records, you are done with all the things; I recommend you to update the bank records, too. It is a fact, that in case you want a financial loan or mortgage, it is easier if you are a U.S. citizen, of course, you have to have that on bank records. U.S. resident alien people can apply for any loan or mortage, but the thing is that the fact that they are not citizens that have more risk of going back to their home or origin country and not to pay back nothing, that is the assumption of the banks; so, U.S. citizens are not deportable people, and hence, there's less risk of giving a loan or mortgage to a U.S. citizen. Now, I can explain you what would happen in case of a very bad scenario which a person does not update his/her records and committ a crime that the person remains in prison for more than 6 months (I don't think that is going to happen to you of course); in that case, the person goes to prison, and because he/she doesn't have updated none of the records, he/she is going to go to an ICE deportation prison until the person can probe with evidence that he/she is a U.S. citizen; everything would have been saved if the person that goes to prison updates the records. You can now realize and watch all the advantages of being a national or citizen of this amazing country. I'm pretty sure that many people do not know all these things that I'm telling here. Thanks and bye,

US Citizenship General DiscussionRFE - what do I do?
Did you get your biometrics done? It could be your biometrics date. People get RFE for biometrics, that is what happened to my wife...

Long story short. Sent if off Feb. 5th. On the 24th they mailed off the RFE. We moved and they sent it to the old address. Won't resend it, since she said it can take up to 90 days to get here ( Yeah, right ). I am assuming they want this year's tax return. I sent 07,08 and the lease agreements and bank account statements. But I am not sure though. I do not want to waste 2 months. How would I do it if I decided to send them this year's tax return? Just send it to the address I sent the N-400 to and put the NOA number on it?

US Citizenship General DiscussionNew Social Security Card
It looks same to me . She never had restrictions on hers before while she had her greencard.
It is still strange to me why she had to swear in.

Thanks,
bradam

Some social security cards contain a restrictive statement on it. That's all... there shouldn't be any difference between them.

However, your status will be different once you inform them of becoming a citizen...

Ant - didn't you post a nice thread on what you did after becoming a citizen??? you actually had a list of things you did... :D

I need to find that thread.....

Just wanted to share.

When you go and apply for your passport , they ask you if you want the routine service( takes between 4-6 weeks) or expedited which is faster and you pay $65 extra for that expedited service. Just go to any post office with a sign that says passport applications accepted , fill out the form , show your ID and your naturalization certificate ( they keep your original cert.) along with money order and 2 passport pictures ,that should be it.

Good Luck,
Bradam

How did she apply for that routine service? Where is that at?...pardon my innocence, lol. I live in Carroll County. My husband works with the SSA so no problem for that :).

Sorry for the late response. IO did not ask any documents, as my wife told me. IO did not want to see passport. She just wanted to see my wife's ID . No questions about travels or etc. Her interview was less than 10 minutes. My wife applied for U.S passport on 02/26 via routine service and received her passport and certificate at the same day in 2 separate envelopes on 3/21/2010. She also went to SSA to change her status on 2/26, and she received her new SS Card in two weeks. Where do you live in MD?

Hope this helps

When submitting the application we included the copies of tax returns, transcripts. IO had those already, but she kept checking on them .

Today, we also went to the social security office, my wife had to swear that the naturalization certificate was original , and she was telling the truth. I did not know that she needed to swear on the truth. she was told that she was going to be recorded, too. My wife was given a paper saying that it would take SSA at least 4 weeks to verify the information that we submitted today.

The employee at SSA also said that we could go and apply for the passport anytime we want.

Thanks, but I still don't understand... where did the tax return come from? Did your wife bring it to the interview or did the IO pull it from IRS computer or ...?

no we had already submitted tax returns , but IO asked and looked at tax returns
in yellow letter she was asked to bring her divorce decree for her previous marriage in turkey, today IO never asked about it. we had also sent a copy with our application

I kept hearing about the tax returns, but in my case, I get the yellow letter asking me to bring my driver's license only.

So did your wife get a letter asking her to bring the tax return to the interview?

I'll really appreciate if anybody else can confirm if they also get a letter asking for the tax return.

Thanks.

yes she did
she had her interview and oath today

did your wife get the oath on the same day?

It was a long day. There were at least 50 people . It took almost an hour.
The questions asked were:
1.Name a state that borders Canada
2. What is the name of the ocean on the east coast?
3.What is freedom of speech?
4.Number of Senators
5.When was the constitution written?
6. she was asked to read a question and asked to write the answer
What my wife said is IO was so fast checking the information. IO did not look at passport, or at any supporting documents. IO checked tax returns a couple of times to make sure everything was okay. No chit-chat, almost no facial expressions. IO verified the name , address, names of our children, cell phone numbers, that was it.

I would appreciate it if someone could update our information
Congratulations to everyone who became citizens, and good luck to our vjers in line ...

It looks like it:)
We also received the yellow letter on 1/19. My wife was married in Turkey , and they are asking her to bring her divorce decree, which we already submitted with N-400. Fortunately, we have it in original language and in English. I wonder how long , approximately, it takes to receive an interview letter after the file has been sent to the local office for scheduling?

Thanks,

Wohooo! Smooth sailing so far.

Yes , we are definitely in the same situation. We sent our papers on the 18th, you did yours on the 19th.We got that finger print receipt at the same time. What a coincidence?

Goodluck....
