1, Fill in DOS case number, For child write "N/A"

2, Check of what applies, and dont check boxes that do not apply, like prison record, or military record.

3, DS-156K and DS-230 are simply fallible PDF files, you can fill them out in adobe reader and print them for neatness, they do not need to be hand written.

http://www.state.gov/m/a/dir/forms/

4, NO, most consulates want them brought to the interview, Montreal wants DS-230, DS-156 (2 Copies) and the check list returned to them. http://www.visajourn...mp;cty=Montreal

5, Anyway the is convenient for you so that you can easily and quickly locate things when asked for them at the interview.

Thank you very much for all of your help YuAndDan! What a relief, I was panicing that everything would have to go. Then I began worrying what If I dont get everything right away? lol. Anyways, I do have one more question... what about the I-134 form is that to be mailed as well?, or to be brought to the interview with the documents that are not being sent to the consulate?

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionPackage 3
hello fellow VJ-ers,

As you all know(from my previous posts)I have recently received package 3 in the mail. I have gone through it, and have a few questions regarding the information that needs to be filled in& submitted. I figured instead of driving myself crazy and attempting to do it on my own with the possibility of being wrong, that I would seek some help from all of you. My questions are:

1. the page where it says "dear visa applicant" do I fill in the case number that the montreal consulate has assigned to me? or is it something to leave blank for their offices to fill in? Directly under this statement it says "this petition includes the following child/children" Since I dont have any children I would leave this blank right?

2. the checklist states "check each box when the document is obtained" Does that mean all the boxes have to be checked? more specificaly numbers 7,8,9&11? (I have not been to court/prison or the military, i've never been married, and I dont have children)I was wondering if I would leave these blank, and sign off on it once I have the other documents?

3. I know that DS-156 has to be done online and printed once it has been complete(I have already done this). I was wondering if DS-156K&DS-230 are to be done online as well? in the document it states "this new electronic format does not apply to DS-230" and then goes on to explain the DS-156K. Does this mean they are to be hand written? since they have been sent in the package from the consulate.

4. Are the original documents (ie. long from birth certificate, police certificate, etc...) to be sent back to the consulate with package 3? or to be brought to the interview? Does this also include the medical?

5. I was wondering how others have put together package 3 after completion to be sent back to the consulate? folders, protectors, dividers, binders? how was it arranged? Just curious.

Thank you all in advance for your help. I greatly appreciate it!!!
If I have missed anything feel free to let me know.

Canadafly or take train to MTL?
I was thinking of taking the train as well to get to the interview...but I was also debating on driving. Right now the means of transportation seems to be higher in cost because of the rising fuel costs, well here in Ontario anyways. For the time being Im just anxiously awaiting to find out when my interview date is to begin with. Best of luck to you!

Nah, you don't need any money... that's what your fiance is for whistling.gif (hehehe)

Honestly, I drained my account tying off lose ends before I left. As a full time student paying her own way, there wasn't much left over after graduation, that's for sure.

The only question I was asked at the POE is if my fiance and I had married before trying to cross on the K-1. The guard flipped through the packet briefly but didn't really pay much attention to anything inside.

Thanks so much everyone! I know what you mean Hugglebuggles, Im almost at that point as well. It does become quite costly to take care of everything in order to take the next step in life. In the end it's well worth it though. Thats how I am looking at it! Its a relief knowing that Im not alone, and that there are others willing to help. And that some of you can relate to me or vice versa. I really appreciate it.

^^ The questions in secondary will be about the K1 Visa - She opened my package and looked through it and quizzed me about things like, how did you meet? when did he propose? what city were his parents born in? (i had no idea haha), if I've ever been married before. I am one of the only person who had all these questions though. Most people don't get any questions so I wouldn't worry about!

I was just more curious about if they would ask about money, because of the payments that have to be made before I leave I wont be going with a whole lot... therefore I wasnt sure if this would become an issue or not? Im just so excited that everything is finally happening that I over think things and worry. if that makes any sense?

Thats pretty straight forward. Thanks again! I'm just so full of questions today...If Where Im flying is going to be different than where I am staying will this become an issue? can i specify this to them? We want to marry in California, part of his family are there and the others are in kansas(which is the address used in our files)but will be at the wedding, and then after 2 months we will be relocating again to texas due to his job training for the militairy. so its kind of all over the place for us for the first little while.

You will need to provide them with an address where you will be residing and where you can get mail. It can be a different address than the one you had originally submitted for the K-1. When you file the AOS you should use the address where you will be staying at the time because they will send the receipts there as well as your appointment for fingerprinting (bioimetrics). You do your biometrics at a local office so it needs to be close to where you are living. If you move after filing AOS you have to notify USCIS of your new address so you receive your mail from USCIS. Your file doesn't generally go to the Service Centers like CSC - it is generally transferred to your local office for processing. The reason for this is if you need an interview it is done at your local office so they are considered the ones 'in charge' of the processing. Files can and do get transferred however to other service centers for processing, most notably CSC, and such applications are generally approved without an interview. It can get confusing. You do need to keep USCIS informed about where you are living at any given time, especially if you have an application pending.

Thank you, your information has been very helpful to me. It has also put my mind at ease so to speak. Im still full of questions though. While going through the secondary inspection do they ask similar questions as they do at customs? as well as the basic questions that you have already mentioned to me? like how much money I would bring, pleasure/business for example. Or would it strictly be reagrding the K1 Visa and documents?
nathandaceFemaleCanada2009-07-11 16:28:00

or would it directly go to the CSC because that is where everything else went through at the beginning of the K1 process? wait the CSC and the USCIS are different places right? im going to stop now before I really confuse myself. lol. it has been a long day!

Basically if you are flying in you will go through US customs at the airport in Canada. You don't need to do anything different when you buy your ticket nor mention anything to anyone. When you go to board your flight you will be directed to US immigration. They are the ones you give your envelope and passport to. The questions they ask are general information ones - where are you going, is the address correct, when are you getting married, stuff like that. They may tell you that you can't leave the US until you get your AOS or your Advance Parole (AP) - some do, some don't.

VBG is a shortform way of writing "very big grin" - I always found it funny that they made us do the work to bring our own immigration files back to the US. After you turn in your file they will forward it to the USCIS office that has jurisdiction over where you will be living so it is waiting for you when you file for AOS.

Congratulations! Crossing the border on a K-1 is usually pretty painless. Are you driving in or flying in? Either way, you arrive at the border or immigration and advise them you have a K-1 visa that you want to use. They will direct you to secondary inspection. Your visa will be physically attached inside your passport and you will also receive a large yellow envelope with the visa that contains instructions 'Do Not Open'. The yellow envelope contains your whole immigration file - you are actually couriering it back to the US (VBG). At Secondary inspection you will hand in the envelope and your passport with the visa. They will open the envelope, review the documents, ask you some questions, fingerprint you, then stamp your passport and staple a piece of cardstock into it called an I-94 (entry-exit visa). If you are driving they will charge you $6 for the I-94. If you are flying it will be included in your ticket price. They will write on both the stamp and the I-94 a date 90 days in the future - this is the day by which you need to get married. They will keep the envelope and hand you back the passport and visa. Be sure to hold on to the I-94 -you will need it for AOS.

You can apply for AOS as soon as you are married and have the State issued copy of the marriage certificate. Ideally you will also want to file for AOS before the I-94 expires so you are never out of status, but if there are delays in getting documents you need, a few days over aren't going to be a problem.

You can get the 3rd HPV shot wherever you like. I believe you don't need to have completed the series before you apply for AOS but you do need to have initiated it. So, whatever works best in your timeline should be fine.

Good luck.

I was thinking of flying in, it would be a lot easier for me to get to my destination by plane. Do you know if when I book my plane ticket if there is an option that I select (online booking?) or if I let the person at the desk know when I go to check in? I have both the envelope and passport, but what does VBG mean? While they are reviewing the documents, what kind of questions do they ask? and how long does it take? The 90 day date they write wont be an issue, because Im planning a wedding for the 18th of July right now. you mean the passport with the visa in it right? So basically find a safe place to keep the documents:)Great!Thank you, your information was very helpful! That all seems pretty straight forward, and painless like you said.

Hi all,

I just got my visa yesterday, and I was wondering what it is like crossing the border into the US? and how soon afterwords would I have to apply for the AOS? Oh and for the immunization/3rd HPV shot, do I have to get it done in canada or can I get a note from my doctor to have it done within the US ( I still have 2 months before it needs to be done)I would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

If you wanted to mail your xray that is fine. You definitely won't require it at the POE. Your yellow sealed envelope has your immigration file in it, including your medical report. Part of the medical report is the x-ray report. Since immigration officers are not medically trained to review xrays they take the radiologists report's conclusions. Your x-ray is a nice souvenir that you can use as a baseline for your annual medical when you get a family doctor here in the US. You won't need it to enter the country.

Good luck at your POE.

Good to know, thanks so much Kathryn41.

hey all.

Everything went well for me at secondary inspection at Pearson. A customs officer took my folder that I was given before secondary inspection, I was told to take a seat, and I waited about an hour and a half (it was really busy there this morning). Then when my name was finally called the customs officer came over to me, asked me for my package, I gave it to him, asked me when I was getting married, I told him hopefully the 18 (this weekend) he said okay and that he was going to process my package and told me to take a seat and he would come back out to get me. He had also said when he came back that he would look through my bags, and then I would be on my way. He came back out, I put my bags up for him, he asked me standard questions that they normally ask at customs goods, alcohol, funds, etc...searched through my bags, had me pack them back up. He then gave me back the sheet of paper that was attached outside of my brown envelope, and my passport. Then he told me my 90 day dead line, and showed me the stamp and I-94. I thanked him, and he showed me where to exit. I didnt get printed, or my picture done. Im just really happy that it all went well. Now Im in Colorado awaiting my connecting flight to my final destination. Thank you all for your help and support.

Pearson is great for a POE i went thru there was so darn easy ... go for it won't be a problem

When i wnt thru there the place was empty and didn'n take too long .. they didnt even ask me any questions .. just took my fingerprints and a picture told me to have a seat about 15 minutes later i was on my way that was it.

All these positive experiences from people make me feel much more relieved. I do have one question while I am thinking of it though...has anyone ever mailed their xray to the address which they will be staying at, instead of bringing it with them? In the letter I got from the consulate it says that the xray is not required at the POE. Does anyone wish to share their experience regarding the xray? I am debating on what I should do tomorrow.

Toronto Pearson is a pre-clearance centre. So you leave the check-in area and go directly through Customs. Don't forget to fill out the I-94 form outside the Customs area first, as Sapphire says. When you get to the CBP Officer, tell them you are entering on a K-1 visa. They will direct you to the secondary inspection area, and that is where the processing will occur. There is no separate line.

Great! Thank you guys for all of your help! I booked my one way ticket this morning to leave on Tuesday. Im so anxious and Happy that things are finally falling into place. If I have more questions between now and then I will likely be posting them here:)

I crossed at Pearson on June 6th. My flight was at 4:15 p.m. and I got to the airport at around 12:30 p.m. I wanted to give myself about 4 hours or so because I wasn't sure how busy it would be and how long it would take. I also planned my flight so that I wouldn't have to be at the airport super early or on a busy day. Before I entered, I filled out the blue customs form and then also filled out a white I-94 form. They were both available at the little desk just outside of customs.

After a tearful goodbye with my Mom, I went through Customs in Terminal 1 (Air Canada). I told the 1st officer that I was moving to the U.S. on a K1 visa. He saw that I had been crying, asked me why I looked so nervous. I said I was just sad to be moving away from my family, and would be okay. He was really nice. Told me to relax a bit and make my way through to Secondary.

I went into Secondary and it was realllllly quiet. There was no one else in there. An officer took all my documents and opened up my envelope and started asking me questions and entering stuff in her computer. She asked me various questions all relating back to my packet. How did we meet, where I was moving, where my fiance's parent's were born(i actually didn't know the name of the cities and then she asked why my fiance had never taken me there [to the Phillipines] and I just said because we didn't want to go there at this point in time and she moved one) if we had married yet and maybe a few other questions that I can't recall. She was very stern and serious and a bit scary but mostly just serious. Then she took my fingerprints and the machine was having a hard time reading my fingers... she said it was because they were moist, but I didn't feel like they were moist... anywho, she got me some paper towels and then finally they worked. All this took about 25 minutes or so.

Then she told me to go over to the guy at the table so he could search my bag. I had 2 large suitcases, 1 EXTRA large duffle bag and a carry on suitcase. The agent was pretty friendly, but mostly just down to business. He asked me to take everything out of my bags... and I was a bit annoyed because it was a lot of stuff, so I just said.. well it's all clothes, shoes and purses and accessories and so he just sort of sifted through things and that was that. I fixed all my bags and then was on my way. That took another 25 minutes or so.

Overall I was in there just under an hour.

And that was that. It was definitely not easy, but I'm pretty sure they were so thorough with me because it was dead in there.

thank you for your help! How does one go about getting a letter of compliance? I believe the car is 1997-1999 Ford Sable or Mecury. Or would my dad (the owner have something like that when he purchased the car?)

I'm going to move your topic from Working and Travelling to the Canada forum. There are tons of threads there on this subject if you do a search. Also at the top of the forum is a pinned topic - Canada Immigration Guide - links there to info as well.

Basically - if it is a U.S. or Canadian made car all you need is a letter of compliance from the manufacturer, when you cross back over the border, present it and say you would like to import your car.

Hey all,

I'm finally beginning to plan a trip to visit my parents in Canada around mid May(I have received my AP, EAD AND SSN, just waiting on my GC now). I was wondering what it's like leaving the US, and re-entering once the vacation is done? I will be flying to Buffalo NY where my parents would pick me up at the air port and drive over thr boreder (it will aslo be the same thing on the way back)... unless my husband and I choose to drive. The only way we would be driving back is if my husband and I buy my dad's car. He has been looking to sell it for a while now. Since my husband and I need a car it would be the perfect solution for us and my parents. The only thing is I know nothing about bringing a car to the US and what kind of documentation I would be needing? or if there are any fees? or if it would pose a problem at the border? (my dad's car is paid off, great condition and passed all testing for smog, oil and etc.) If I can get the information needed down, it would be extremely helpful.

Sincerely, C&N

You haven't recieved your packet 3 yet?? And you got approved in July?

I would be calling NVC to see if it had left in July, and if it had, I would be emailing Montreal or Vancouver (whichever you are going through)

I got our NOA2 on Sept 1, and had my packet 3 by Sept 20....

You and your SO need to make some calls to see if it is in Security checks or something at NVC, or to see if your packet 3 got lost in the mail from Montreal or Van...that seems like a long wait.

Did the USC get a letter from NVC saying that your case had been forwarded to the US Consulate in Canada?

<3 Jen

I thought that it is a long wait as well. We have been making calls as well as our lawyers. My fiance and I received a letter saying that the NVC received the approved petition, and within a few weeks will be forwarded to the Montral Consulate. Since, I received that letter, I have been in contact with my lawyer every 2 weeks or so(sometimes sooner). Last week I e-maild my lawyer, and he got back to me right away saying that he would contact the NVC and Montreal to see whats going on. On the same day I got a phone call from his assistant saying that it has left the NVC, Montreal has received it and are pocessing it. Montreal has not given them(my lawyers) a date as to when I will get the info, but told them (my lawyers) not much longer. So, I know the petition/information is in montreal...Im just waiting on them. I still can't help but worry(I hope it has not gotten lost), and I wanted to see if anyone else out there was in a similar situaton. What do you mean by security checks?

I have heard that some March 2008 applications have been approved, but was unsure about locations and if they play a roll in how long a visa takes to get processed? Im just curious to know if this timeframe is normal(march-sept)? Hi to all,

I sent off our I-130 today and started our Visa journey. Anyone else mailing theirs this week good luck to you and wish me well also. I used an attorney through Catholic Charities immigration law clinic. Their fees are based on your income. It is an hours drive from my home but to get help with this process it is well worth the drive. My husband and I have 2 problems we needed to address. First there is a huge age difference and second I married him close to when I divorced my ex-husband. The lawyer advised us both to write letters describing our relationship, how we met, etc. We also sent pictures of us together during my first visit, wedding pictures that also include his family, phone bills, emails and letters from friends. I had friends come to my house at different times to meet and talk to him on the web cam. I was legally separated from my ex-husband for 3 years and I sent a copy of my Judgment of Separate Maintenance as proof along with the actual divorce papers.

Now that the I-130 is in the mail I can relax and let God do the rest.

I forgot to mention the lawyer feels that in our case it is very important that I go to his interview so I will be making my third trip to Pakistan when the time comes.

hi everyone
i have a questions for ya
i want to know how many emails and how many pictures we should send to uscis with the 1-129f from
i was reading guides here and it says two to five pictures so can we send more ? and we have been thinking that we can send about two eamils for each month since we met till the day we will send the form
what do you think about that ?
have a blessed day rose.gif

Hi tenderheart,

I have recently sent in my I-129F to my lawyer/immigration specialist (they then send it to the USCIS) I was unsure about the same thing...so I included an amount which I felt comfortable with. My fiance and I have been together for 3 1/2 years. Needless to say I had alot of e-mails and pictures to sort through. I ended up sending in 29 e-mails, it worked out being 15 from me to my fiance and 14 from my fiance to me. We decided choose a selection from each year (it worked out being 5 a year each). As for the pictures I too printed mine from my digital camera 4-6 to a sheet and there were about 30 total. I also decided to label them. Hope this is helpful to you. By the way, your idea sounds fine to me! Good Luck smile.gif

hi mohamed and trina,

I printed mine off, signed and dated it. As far as I know the letter of intent does not have to be notorized, but im not a professional:p

My fiance is filling out his G-325a, but he knows nothing about his biological father. Can he just put "none" or "unknown"?

my fiance's parents are divorced, so he had similar questions. We ended up filling in the information that we knew, and the information that we didnt know about his father we looked up(birth cirtificate, through other family members, etc).We eventually got in contact with him. However, for your situation I would have to say that Unknown sounds more professional/apropriate. That's just my opinion though.

i posted a topic about hire a lawyer or not
my fiancée wants to hire a lawyer and we were talking about that for more than 10 months
but after i posted the topic and asked you about what you think
and most of you guys said Noooooooooooooooooo lawyer
and after she read that topic she changed her mind and we will file for the visa by our selves kicking.gif
and we will save the money kicking.gif kicking.gif
so i want to thank all of you for your support
have a nice blessed day rose.gif

My fiance and I were debating this topic as well. We decided upon retaining a lawyer, and they have been very helpful in answering all of our questions and walking us through each step along the way.It was alot of money upfront, but woth it for us.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresabout k1 timeline
I was unsure if you wanted others to post their time lines or not? So I took a chance and posted mine thus far. I'm in the early stages of filing. I sent my I-129F on Feb 29, 2008 and my lawyer reviewed and sent it to the CSC on March 6,2008... so i'm anxiously awaiting for a confirmation. I was told 4 to 6 weeks!

why not seeing each other again ? can't do any bad anyway !

I know that I could not go that long without seeing my fiance... Im use to visiting him(or him visiting me) every four months or so. Its hard with him being in school and with both of us working as well. Every scenario is different, we can just hope for the best! Hopefully everything will go well for you salman1:) Best of luck to you.

hey guys

i met my fiancee about 2 and a half yrs ago....is that acceptable?

i know that the requirement is 2 yrs...but wat if its only a little bit more? will they accept it ?

I met my fiance as a pre-teen. We have been together now for 3 and 1/2 years now I am currently going through the first step of my K1 visa, and have a lawyer representing me. As long as you have proof(ie. plane ticket stubs, pics and etc...of you and your fiancee together) and that you have at seen(/met) each other within the 2 and 1/2 years you have mentioned when you file for your K1 petition then things should be fine. Hope this helps.

It is a meeting within the past 2 years. It doesn't matter how long you have known each other.

Sorry my bad, I should have phrased it differently... I meant As long as you have met/been together in within the 2 years time frame things should be fine. It also doesn't hurt to state that you have known each other longer if you can provide proof for it as well. my apologies.
