Do you feel being a scientist with an official government job to be equivalent to the average Russian laborer? Who has no official job and gets paid cash on the side.

So what visa do the parents have to apply for?

One more thing: has anyone changed their name on the green card and was able to enter the US with the new card and a passport with the old name? do these two documents have to have the same name?
Yes, no. My wife did it successfully two times.

QUOTE (Lyuba @ Sep 19 2007, 02:33 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
as long as you take a copy of your marriage certificate which shows change of name with you.
Most US documents including marriage certificate are worthless in Russia unless they are translated, appostiled, and certified by a Russian consulate abroad. A better approach is getting an official amendment to the Russian international passport at a Russian consulate which will state this bearer also go by this (greencard) name.

The question was whether it is possible to enter the States with a passport and green card which have different names and I said yes, take a copy of your marriage certificate to show to the immigration officer at POE. I did it twice. Nobody was talking about using it in Russia.
You didn't understand the question.

So what visa do the parents have to apply for? I have a conditional green card - I know I cannot file for them yet so what visa do they need to come here?
One more thing: has anyone changed their name on the green card and was able to enter the US with the new card and a passport with the old name? do these two documents have to have the same name?
Thanks a bunch!

They can apply for a tourist visa.

Yes, you can enter the US with different names on your green card and passport as long as you take a copy of your marriage certificate which shows change of name with you.

Scientists at public institutions in the U.S. don't make a lot of money either.

So it proves the point that you don't need to be an executive to get a visa to America.

Well, that's not true.

My mom is a scientist and she works for Russian Academy of Science. She doesn't make any money. She got her visa a couple of weeks ago with no problem. It was her first visa ever, she has never been abroad.

The name on the ticket should match her name on the passport!!!! That's the rule.

I travelled to Russia two times and I didn't have any problems. Just take a copy of your marriage certificate and the green card.

AO Medicina is a very nice place. Very quick, efficient and polite. I had a good experience there.

And so many people want to come to America because they think that America is a paradise. But once they actually get here, they see that it is not. After all, any place is good if you have money. No place is good if you don't.

I am still registered in my Moscow apartment and I am almost a citizen in US. I renewed my Russian passport through the Houston consulate this year. It wasn't a big deal. They just consider you to be a temporary residing in the US Russian citizen. That's fine with me.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusRussian traditional condenced milk
If she wants the "brown" one, she just needs to boil a can of ordinary sweetened condensed milk for a couple of hours in a big pot. Doesn't she know this? All women is Russia know this trick. There was no "brown" one in the Soviet Union, you had to boil it. Now you can get anything of course.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusSending items from Russia to USA
There are a few companies in Moscow that can ship big stuff for you. I contacted them when I planned to move to the US 4 years ago. It isn't cheap but it can be done. I ended up sending everything by mail, everything arrived safely but I paid 500 dollars for shipping. I did bring some books, I am an interpreter and I need my dictionaries and specialized literature.

You don't need to notarize anything or to translate anything. Let her send copies of all the documents ptoviding ties to Russia together with the application.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusNotarizing russian document
I notarized my signature in the bank with no problem.

Bank of America is known to be difficult.

Tell them that they are just notarizing your signature, not your affirmation or anything.

Do you have a notary at work who can do it? Or try a translation agency, they usually have notaries.

I would notarize your signature myself (as I am Russian and I am a notary) but you live way too far from me.

I always send my mom barbecue sauce, peanut butter, maple syrop and popcorn. She loves all these things!

I also buy her cute Christmas socks and pijamas, she always appreciate it. Clothes is always a good present since you can get good stuff on sale in Macy's while in Russia you will have to pay the full price for everything. Baby clothes is always appreciated by my Russian girlfirends.

Your ticket should be in your maiden name as this is your primary travel document. When you enter the US show them your GC and your paasport. Have a copy of your marriage certificate on hand for any questions. I did it twice and had no problem.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusMarrying in Russia
I can tell you how it is in Moscow which will give you an idea what to do. I was researching this subject before we decided to go on K-1. Your fiancee should go to ZAGS which registeres foreign marriages. Not every ZAGS does that so she has to find out whihc one. They will give her a list of required documents (it isn't long or difficult) and voila.

She isn't going to lose her propiska in Russia if she renews her passport in US. These things are not connected.

I have renewed my Russian passport in my maiden name (why bother with the name change?) and I am going to get a US passport with my married name (as I am a citizen now).

I handle all the finances in our house because I am just better at that then my American husband. innocent.gif

And yes, Russian people say things bluntly as they are. That's how we are. I can't get used to American sweet talk even after 4 years here. It is just culture. What is considered rude in America is perfectly fine in Russia and American extreme tactfullness is perceived as hypocrisy in Russia.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusJobs teaching . . . or translating?
Let me share my experience in the field. I have master's degree in linguistics and I taught college in Moscow while being a translator for an oil company. I speak 3 languages (including Spanish).

I had VERY hard time looking for a job. In order to be a teacher you need to be certified to teach and the only way to do it is to go back to school. Another 4 years of college. I was told I had to take Russian classes taught by an American professor! That's ridiculous.

Russian departments are not really big in the universities and there are plenty of candidates for those few jobs available.

Being a translator is an option. BUT! Many people believe you need just to speak a foregin language to be able to translate. WRONG. I spent 7 years studying translating and interpreting and there are a lot of things you need to know before becoming a good translator.

Let her try anyway. Maybe she will get luckier than me.

Why does she need her Russian middle name in America? Nobody will be able to pronounce it anyway. It is rarely used and she will be just fine with her first and last name.

You can't register with the consulate until you abandon your residence in Russia. If you still have property and propiska in Russia, you are considered to be temporary residing in the USA by Russian authorities.

Yes, it takes that long. Russia is know for its red tape even abroad.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusVisa for my son
I have dual citizenship (Russian and American) and I want to go to Russia to visit my family with my son who was born here and is an American citizen.

What would be the best way to get a visa for him? I don't want my mom to deal with OVIR in Moscow because it is hell to get an invitation issued. Is there any other way for us to go?

Thanks!!!!
LyubaFemaleRussia2009-03-25 09:17:00
Russia, Ukraine and BelarusOkay, dammit...
You don't have to wait until they deliver her visa to her, she can pick it up at DHL office herself and it will save her a day or two that can make all the difference.

Don't get discouraged, when I went through K 1 process, my fiancee booked me a ticket even before we got NOA 2. Everybody called us crazy but it worked out just fine. I had interview on December 2 and flew to the US on December 24. Had plenty of time to pack and finalize everything.

Good luck!!!!

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusDual citizenship and travelling
Hi guys,

I hope you can help me. I have dual Russian and American citizenship. I renewed my Russian passport in the Russian consulate here in the US.

So how do I travel with 2 passports? The problem is that I read at the US embassy in Moscow site that Russian authorities won't let you leave the country if you have a Russian passport issued by the consulate in the US. This doesn't make much sense but it is what it says at the web site so it makes you wonder...

Did somebody travel with 2 passports to Russia and how did it go?

Thanks in advance!!!
