CanadaQuick question about travelling back to Canada

Last time at Pearson Terminal 1, they didn't have a citizens line / visitors line. Just one main line. Anyhoo, to enter Canada just show your passport (the first time I went back, they asked a few questions as they saw my Visa in the passport) And every time I've come back to the US, I just show my GC they never ask to see passport

Oh well that sounds easy then!!!

thanks! smile.gif

Do you have an AP document?

I'm going back too for the first time in 2 weeks using my AP.

Going into Canada, I'm sure they'll ask me where I live and why I'm visiting. I will just give them my Canadian passport.

Coming back, I'll go through the US customs line for Permanent Residents and Citizens with my husband and show them my Passport and AP document.

I'm not sure how it works with just a stamp in the passport. Hopefully you'll have your GC by then and you can just show that to get back in.

I don't have an AP document. I didn't bother with it.

I always just assumed that I would show my passport re-entering Canada, and my passport with the greencard stamp upon returning to the US.

It just sounds too confusing to me so I want to double check!

CanadaQuick question about travelling back to Canada
I took a peak around and may have missed it, but I didn't see the answer to my question.

Sorry in advance if it's somewhere obvious innocent.gif

I just got my greencard approved yesterday and got the stamp. I'm planning to go back to Toronto for my birthday(which is thanksgiving weekend).

What do I need to do once I get to customs at the airport?

Is there a certain line I need to be in? Am I just going back into Canada as a citizen with my passport?

and what about when I return to the US?

Any other advice, for easy crossing is welcomed!

Thanks in advance!!!

Canada10 months to citizenship. I am going to do it.
I haven't decided what I'm doing just yet.

I'm not sure if I feel comfortable saying those words at the ceremony.

We'll see though. I'm still a bit away from even having the choice anyways. It'll be something I think about over the next year.

Thanks everyone for the help!! I'm super excited - it's been a long time since i've been home!!

One last question, do I need to declare anything? I mean I'm obviously returning to the US after, but I AM bringing a couple things with me
that were bought for our wedding (like favor boxes ect..) that I will be leaving there. I tried to find stuff on the customs website, but couldn't
find anything! I wasn't sure if I should treat this like I'm returning from a vacation, or entering as a visitor?

So confusing! lol

Thanks again everyone!

Star-You're welcome...Glad to be able to help...
And yes, it is not as hard as you think it is....As long as you have the proper documentation..You're good to go...:)
As for your passport.....
Unfortunately, they don't offer "married name notation" anymore...(they stopped doing this after 2007)
So for a passport in your married name....You have to apply for a new one.....$100 CDN and 2 weeks later....lol.....
In the meantime, you're going to have to book your tickets in your maiden name..(or whatever name is in your passport).....
Bring your marriage certificate, just in case.....That way they can see the "connection" between your maiden and married names..
Hope this helps too....Good luck...
Ant
P.S. By the way...When I travelled..They scanned both my passport and my green card in the machine, on both sides of the border.....So bring both with you!

Two weeks!?! That's not very long at all!!

Thank you again so much! I'm so excited to go back. It's been such a long time!!!

Whew thanks guys!

that sounds a lot easier then what I thought it was going to be!

I was going to get a new passport, but I had JUST got my passport before we got engaged, and now that I'm travelling up there in 2 months, I didn't want to risk it not arriving back again in time! So I was going to do that once I get back from that trip

Should I make a note or something in my passport about my married name?

Thanks guys guys!! :)

Hey Guys,

Well I'm about to book my first flight back to Toronto since obtaining my PR.

Quick Questions, just to double check.

1) My passport is still in my maiden name, so book it under this name, bring marriage licence to use with PR card on way back in
2) I enter in....any line? Canadian Citizens?

Should I plan on being questioned a lot when I re-enter Canada for the first time?

When I went for my interview, the IO told me to always expect being taken into secondary on my return trips to the US, usually
to "confirm" my PR Card.

Any other suggestions to make it easy and painless, would be awesome!

Thanks Guys!

Hey Everyone,

So I have a quick customs question! When I got back to Toronto to have our big wedding, do I have to pay customs/duty on my wedding dress? It won't be staying in Toronto because then we're coming back here for our second reception.

Does anyone know how it works?

many thanks!

Rhiann - congrats on finding your dress!!!
TimandJoyce - you guys are adorable! congrats!

Also could I get re-added to the date list? I got deleted! sad.gif (June 19th,2010)

Last update from me was when I got the call from the bridal place about my dress!

So I went, and I just LOOKED at her and knew she was mine. I love her so much!
I tried her on again though and danced around knowing she was going to be mine!

So, my good friend took pictures of me in it,but she's been so busy with school,
I haven't talked to her in over 2 weeks! Stupid grad school!

So here are the two pictures I DO have of her!

Love her! Anyways so I ordered her on the spot, she was A LOT more then I thought. The price on the tag was right
but who knew they had all these other charges. Like shipping and a bag fee! Anyways she came in at 1,009.65 - OUCH

Oh and I got shoes!!! They are fantastic!!

And I guess that's about it! Oh I mailed the STD's last week. I'm exciting for everyone to get them!
I also went and got pricing for printing our invites(my bro's g/f is designing them) and turns out it's
going to cost me less then $1.00/invite for everything (deal!)

I hope everyone is well! I'm going to try and be around a lot more! smile.gif

Thanks guys for all the support!

I HAVE GREAT NEWS!

Today, the store owner called me at work, and told me that the sales rep that helped me yesterday came in today and begged the owner
to try and find me a dress to try on. So they called the dress maker, and turns out they were picking up my dress from another store (the sample)
but instead of just taking it back, would express ship to my store to try on! It's my exact size and the color I wanted too!!!!

I'M SO HAPPY!!!!! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

I'll post pictures next week when I go there!

Wedding dress ordering can be nerve-wracking, because then it is a DONE deal! I know I was nervous, although I loved my dress. I kept thinking, what if I see another dress I like more or what if something goes wrong with what I want... but, all in all, it is a great experience. Have fun! good.gif

Well,

Today was the worst day.

I was all excited to order my dress, and then I arrive and find out that they have pulled my dress from the store.

So while I can order it, I can't try it on again to make sure it's "the one".

The sales lady convinced me to try on some other ones and while I found one that was nice, a part of me can't stop thinking about my dress.

I would go to another place to order it, but the closest place that sells it, is 3+ hours away from here and I can't get time off work to go
and drive that nor can I afford all that gas money.

I'm devastated. I don't know what to do. cray5ol.gif cray5ol.gif cray5ol.gif cray5ol.gif cray5ol.gif

2 days until the wedding!! kicking.gif My fiance and I are both nervous, but I think its just all the pressure of family and friends flying/driving into town and trying to spend time with all of them... My stomach is in knots! But we are both excited and can't wait until Saturday!!

Unfortunately the weather report keeps getting worse.....the temperature for Saturday...38F......and the chance of precip (ie snow) went from 10% to 50%!! crying.gif

It was only 2 - 5 inches. smile.gif I haven't seen it snow in Nebraska this early in the year before.

I hope you had a wonderful day!

Hello everyone! The wedding day was such a beautiful day, full of nerves and excitement but everything worked out great! I woke up and looked out the window and screamed when I saw all the snow on the ground and flying around! They were calling for 70% of snow showers for the rest of the afternoon. By the time the ceremony came though @2:30 it had cleared up and the sun was shining...alot of the snow had melted. But there was some nice pictures with snow in the background! I didn't want to get my dress wet so we were quick to do some park pictures!

Everyone kept on saying that the Canadians brought the snow down with them! LOL! They probably did! I actually needed my snowbrush on the day of my wedding! This week and next Nebraska gets back to average October temperatures....not 30's and 40's....go figure....

Our cake unfortunately did not make it to the cake cutting sad.gif That was the only mishap, but I think it was because it was too warm in the room! When my hubby and I dropped by the room to check it out before the cocktail hour it was leaning a bit. Well it kept getting worse....We had pillars in between the top and middle tier. By the time the dinner was almost over a staff member came over to say its getting worse...it looks like the leaning tower of pisa.... laughing.gif They boxed up the top tier for us before the cutting of the cake! The cake was delicious and we have ALOT leftover!

Slowly recooperating on sleep! and enjoying married life before more paperwork and errands!

We are both in absolute shock with our wedding gifts.....we have enough to file for AOS, start planning a honeymoon, and feel comfortable in case anything unexpected happens while I cannot work, we both feel like we don't deserve it, everyone travelled so far, then to be so generous, we are both so thankful and shocked.

TimandJoyce-congratulations! Hope your roadtrip adventure was wonderful!

I have no pictures yet! My family has a bunch, hubbys family has some and of course the professional ones will take a little bit! I'll be back with pictures when I get some!

Congrats Minne! I can't wait to see pictures!!!

I'm going to order my dress today - so nervous! ( I don't know why either!)

I was looking around trying to think of what I wanted my party favours to be, and I remembered something really cool from a while ago.

Personalized M&M's!

http://www.mymms.com/

I looked into the costs. Just say I'm having 35 people at my wedding, and I want to give them 2 oz of the M&Ms. I would need 70 oz of them.
I chose to get the dark pink and white with messages on them. One with the wedding date and the other with our names.
5 7oz bags of the personalized ones cost 59.95. 5 7oz bags of just dark brown ones are 34.95
That would give me 70 oz of M&Ms at 94.90. That's without the bags/cases to put them in and with no ribbon.

On the other hand, if I were to buy their pre-wrapped gift ones, they're 139.65 for 35 of them @ 1.75 oz each.
I can easily count out, weigh and package them myself, since I would guess the bags/ribbon would be about 20 bucks if I could find nice looking inexpensive ones. That way I could also get the ribbon colour I wanted.
(I can be a real cost freak when it comes to saving money just by making stuff myself.)

And it's not something that would just sit around forever either.
They taste awesome and you can use the bag for something else.

Not sure if about 130 dollars or so is too much to spend on just the favours, but it doesn't seem so bad to me.
I'd even tag the favours with the people's names for the fun of it.

We're doing mnm's however, I went to our friends wedding where they had some on the tables for people to eat, and the custom writing on it, is not worth it at all. They are faded, hard to read ect...

What we are doing, is buying the pink breast cancer mix they sell every october in stores and then I'm going to store them until next June. I talked to the person at mnm's and they said they save for a long time as long as they are put away properly. I bought little favor boxes for mine and to fill one, I need half a bag of normal mnm's. So I'll need approx 50 bags (I'll prob get 60 just to be safe). I'm going to clean out the cash area at walmart when they come in smile.gif

Also one more thing, shipping to Canada from mnm's directly is INSANE. It's really really high. If you want to do a couple mixed colors, look online at a couple of the candy places. They ship for a lot less (without the customizing it) or like Huggles said, michael's sell them now!

Starburst - Etsy is a really good resource for wedding stuff!! A lot of letterpress shops charge in the thousands, but on Etsy, it is a lot more reasonable.

I also plan to get cute little labels for my favours, my garter and a few other cute things I've found on Etsy.

I use the StyleMe Pretty blog as inspiration, and then I do mad searches on Etsy to see if I can replicate for less.

I loveeeeee the styleme pretty blog!!!!

There is a new letterpress machine that is coming out next month. It's like $150 for the entire kit. I'm been looking at it for a while now but not really sure if it's worth the time it would take me to learn it and then create the invites.

I bought cufflinks off etsy for the boys!! Transformer ones! Hubby loves them! good.gif

Oh letterpress invites are soooo pretty! A bit expensive though sad.gif Shop around and maybe you can find them cheaper!

I've actually done extensive research on them since I want them so badly. The cheapest I found them is on Etsy. There is also a printing press that does them pretty cheap, but I need to have the actual text designed first, so that might end up increasing the cost so I'm going to go with an Etsy seller. My inital budget was around $300 for invites, but I'm thinking about seeing if i can swing $500-$600 so that I can get exactly what I want.

I'm turning into a Bridezilla, I swear, haha. I want everything to be perfect and what I envision in my head. I refuse to compromise... hahaha (although I know I will have too because I'm not made of money).

That's actually cheaper then I thought they were! Maybe I need to look through etsy more tongue.gif

Ours is going to be a non-denominational ceremony outdoors. Luckily my husband's family is supportive, since they are Catholic and all.

Ditto. I'm an atheist and hubby is agnostic!

I'm already dreading the time when we have children, and his family is going to want the kid(s) to be baptized Catholic. That won't be happening, just not sure how to break the news to them when the time comes laughing.gif I was never baptized, I turned out pretty well tongue.gif

Thankfully my fiance and I are on the same page about this too.
He's Christian (Did I spell that right? laughing.gif) and I'm not religious.
Baptisms are done at the person's will in Christianity, not done when they're young and have no choice.

We're also not getting married in a church either nor by a pastor.
I'm still considering a wedding on the Queen Mary though, get married by the captain instead.

I am getting really excited about the details of our wedding.

We're doing a photobooth save the date, so we need to go take some photos soon so we can create one and send it out. I'm thinking we will send it out by the end of October.

I've also decided that I definitely want letterpress invites, so I just need to convince my hubs that they are worth it. I'm going to order a bunch of samples so that I can show him the differences between regular printing and letterpress

Peachey - If you don't mind me asking, what was included in your $1500 quote? I'm looking to spend $3000, but I feel like that might be a little low for what I need. It would be nice to compare with someone.

I can't wait to go dress shopping again! I'm not going until December, but I know exactly what I want, so hopefully I will find it!

We wanted to do the photobooth ones, but just settled with photobooth drawings instead!!

We are making our own bouquets so we are going to be spending prob $300-500 on flowers. Our centerpieces are going to look like this

But in our colors (so pink ect..) I think they are like $10ish each (x 16 tables..ack!) so we figure it'll be a lot cheaper then having to do full out centerpieces (before I wanted 6-7 gerbers per table...SO expensive)

Oh and letterpress invites are amazing but I can't spend that much on invites. My hubby (and parents) will kill me!

thanks for all the comments on my dress ladies smile.gif

And don't worry, I'll be wearing spanx under that baby to you know..suck in all the parts that need sucking! rofl.gif rofl.gif rofl.gif
Believe me, I am far from a perfect body!

Oh and my save the dates were designed by my younger brother! He's a graphic designer. His girlfriend and him will be custom designing
all our invites too (if he ever gets around to it!!)

Weddings ARE expensive sad.gif It's so hard to gather enough money to pay for them. We aren't having anything super super fancy and yet it's still costing us easy $15,000. I wouldn't be able to do it at all if it wasn't for my parents. They don't have tons of money, but they are helping out the best they can.
Hubby's parents offered to help a while back, but haven't said anything since so who knows now.

Hope everyone's week is going well! good.gif

I got my greencard in the mail today - it's so nice to have it now! I still have my EAD card so I just put it

Anyways I plan to catch up tomorrow but for now, I have to head off!!

Have a great weekend everyone! good.gif

EAD and AP approved! I got the e-mail tonight at 10:15 mountain time. How late are people in Chicago working these days?! laughing.gif

So, at this point should I assume that I'm going to be having an interview? Its looking that way.

Huge congrats to you!! smile.gif

Hi everyone, we are finally married kicking.gif

So after getting married, applying for SSN, importing the car etc, we are now filing for AOS and need a lil bit of help, there are some "unclear" questions (or maybe it is just unclear to us .. lol) whistling.gif

1: So on form G-325a, there is the following question
- "This form is submitted in connection with an application for:", (and we have the following choices) : Naturalization, Status as permanent Resident, Other (specify) -> 129f petition .. we are not too sure which one to pick
- Also, who should be filing out this form ? The US citizen or the Canadian citizen ?

2: on form I-485
- They are asking for the "A#" .. Is it the one at the back of the I94 in my passport ?
- They also ask for the non immigrant visa number .. which number is it on the visa ?

3: on form I-864
- At question 21, there seem to be a conflict in what they are asking .. they ask for our household size, and specify (do not count anyone twice) .. So if we enter 1 for "Persons you are sponsering in this affidavit", then 1 for "yourself", then 1 for "if you are currently married, enter 1 for your spouse" .. That makes 3 in total but we are only 2 .. so how should we go about filing this one ?

Thanks very much in advance for your help everyone smile.gif

Congrats on the marriage!!!! good.gif

Good job Starbust that is awesome!!

I'm off to get my 3rd shot of gardisil. I know we're supposed to only start the process but since we have our interview in a month and if they ask to see the proof that i got the 3 shots, then i will be able to show them smile.gif

Also, we moved out a months ago so i changed our address thru USCIS and it worked.
However for the proofs, half of our stuff we owe together are still to the former address (which is his brothers house, in the same city)
Like the car title and DL are still on our first address but the new lease, bank account, different insurances, phone bill are on the new one.
Does it matter since we both each time listed on the papers?

thanks!!

And I wouldn't even worry about that. Just explain it if they ask that you moved since gathering stuff.

Congrats on getting the interview Laure! It might be scary, but I bet you'll feel great when everything is done and you don't have to worry about USCIS for a couple years!

Congrats on the approval Starburst! Random question: Did you submit an I-693 with your AOS application or did you just give them the vaccination worksheet? I've just been hearing stories from a lot of people who didn't submit the I-693 and were asked for it at the interview.

Thanks everyone!!!!! kicking.gif

And to answer you Huggle, yes I did submit it. I was actually worried they might make me go back and get the other HPV shots but lucky he didn't say anything!!

Also for the july spreadsheet, you just have to log into a gmail account. it doesn't do anything. It just gives you permission to view it smile.gif

CanadaAOS'rs...
I'm home!

We got to the building at 8:35 for our 9am interview. Went through security and went to the third floor.
Put our letter in the box and then went inside and sat down and waited.

I was honestly surprised how casual people were dressed!! I saw lots with lawyers.

Around 9:10am a man name Jim called us. He introduced himself and told us to follow him through the maze of hallways.
As we walked, he said he appreciated that we had taken the time to dress up a bit. He said people don't really take the interview
serious sometimes.

Finally we got to his office, he swore us in and we sat down. He said he was going to go over a couple things with us. He asked
my husband for his ID, social number, address. Then asked were we met, when we got married, and if he had any children.

He turned to me, asked for my passport and social number. I still haven't remembered my number yet so I had to get my card out and read it.
He asked me all the questions on the AOS page 3(i think it's page 3). checking everything with a red pen. He asked us for letters from our jobs so I handed those over as well as a letter from our bank stating we have join ownership in our bank account.

He asked us if we had a lease, but I explained that we weren't able to add me to it until it expires, which isn't until the 30th of this month. We showed
him a copy of that lease. He flipped through a scrapbook I made and then looked through the back part of the file.

Finally he said he was going to approve our application!!! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

He didn't ask for my EAD or even explain about applying for removing of conditions. He just told me I would get my card in 2 weeks!

I asked him for a stamp, which he gladly gave me and sent us on our way! I couldn't believe how easy it was!

I just got the email saying my card was ordered - I can't wait to have it in my hands!!!

Good Luck to everyone! I'm sticking around this topic to cheer you guys on!

Congrats on all the recent approvals!

My husband and I are leaving in an hour. Our interview is tomorrow!

Since it's at 9am, and the place is 4 hours from here we didn't want to have to get up at 4am to get up there so we got a nice posh hotel!

I am SO nervous unsure.gif My husband is calm and fine! He doesn't think it's a big deal!!!

Earlier I was putting the last of the new pictures we took into our album and I was shaking from thinking about it!

Ahhhh I need to relax!

Alright I'll post after we get home tomorrow and let you guys know how it went!!!

WHOA!

Has anyone been on the USCIS online case status thingy lately? They changed it! Its all colorful and interactive... And they sorta explain to you what your case is doing at any given stage. Funky.

Yup! It's new now!

I love they have the little circles showing what step your on. mine still says "review" when I have my interview next week! rofl.gif

They need to keep that site updated in real time!

Huggle, I saw your interview is this week! GOOD LUCK! good.gif

Got my greencard in the mail today! A lot faster than I thought it would be..the back is super shiny (lol the things I notice)..

So next week I need to:
Go get my name changed on SSN
Get my license printed in my married name
Get them to change my work stuff to married - oh, yeah - I got a job as the operator at Best Buy tongue.gif Temporary while I look at what I need to get in my field
Go to the bank to change the name on the account

NOT DEAL WITH USCIS FOR 21 MONTHS! YAAYY biggrin.gif

Yea for you!!!! GGGGCCCCC!!!!!

Good luck on changing your name... I'm STILL trying to get everything changed over! LOL BUt, then again, I haven't been trying very hard. Oooops! I SOOO need to get on that for the AOS interview!!!

That's a good idea....some stuff can take a couple of weeks to receive in the mail....SSN, DL etc... You wanna give yourself enough time to receive them.

OMG, I went to SSA office yesterday, she noticed an error in my marriage certificate!!!!! The minister dated 'date of marriage' as 'July 7, 2007'... I guess she was thinking '7's'???? And they never caught it at office...OMG, Does this mean we have been married 2 years and we get a 10 year GC???? haha!
Wait, i'm worried now, if USCIS sees this error, I will get an RFE, and I will have to drive to OCNJ to get it fixed....it will then have to be refilled by minister and certified by city clerks office...this could set me back weeks!!!! I wonder if I should just wait and see what happens???? I mean, so far, my EAD and AP got approved and name changed with USCIS with this document...the document acutally shows issued July 6th 2009, and certified July 8th 2009, only error is where minister hand wrote at top July 7 2007. hmmmm. I don't want to unecessarily run around to fix this right now if I don't have to (I don't feel like driving 3 hours back and forth to OC) will be out there in 4 weeks or so, maybe I deal with it then?

UGH...I hope it's not an issue sad.gif

I went to get a copy of mine today (I sent in a certified one, but I wanted another one just incase) and they put my birthday wrong!!! They put 08/10 instead of 10/08! I got the form to fill out to fix it, but it won't be done before my interview so I'm just going to bring that form with me and explain the situation if it comes up. It would suck if it holds us up!

I hope everyone is well! I've been super super busy with my new job and preparing for the interview!!

I finally finished getting everything together and booked our hotel room for the night before!

Here's what I'm bringing - let me know what you think! (or suggestions)

1) Copy of original package + extra copies of important documents
2) Copy of new lease
3) Birth Certs, SSN's, EAD, Passport, marriage licence
4) Our new lease (we just renewed it)
5) Cards, emails, letters, chatlogs
6) a new affidavit from our good friends
7) copies of contracts for our "big wedding" next summer
8) health insurance, life insurance forms
9) our bank cards, void check, letter from bank stating we are joint-owners
10) updated letter from hubby's work + paystubs since last october!
11) letter from my new job (no paystub because I get my first paycheck day of my interview!)
12) Tax returns from last 3 years, W2's

I can't think of anything else? Suggestions?!

We don't have cell phones or credit cards and I'm not able to be on the cable or electric bills because when you rent here, only 1 person's name may be on the bill.

I'm so nervous! Only 5 more days!!

I'm going to catch up on all the posts I've missed tomorrow!
