I just wanted to ask if anyone has done a walk-in biometrics? How open are they to it? I don't think it will be absolutely necessary for me, but it might be, depending on certain things.. My bio appt is at Cleveland, and I MIGHT have to go to a meeting in Akron too.. They're not terribly far apart, so hitting them both on the same day would be possible, but less stress is always better. Any ideas will be very welcome smile.gif Thanks guys.

I had mine done in the Philippines as well - just had the doc fill out a medical certificate. The Civil Surgeon just needed to see that, and all was good. No side effects on my part.. except maybe a throbbing ache on the shoulder where it was applied. I really wish I just scratched the stupid chicken pox things when I had em.. No scar = no evidence = 2 shots. Yak.

I got my one way ticket from an agent in Manila. It was way cheaper than anything we could find online at the time. I flew by Korean Air, from Manila to JFK (NY) with a layover in Korea. It was a great airport (6 hour layover, but I was able to chat with my now-hubby in their internet cafe lobby). I paid something like 600-700 dollars, when the cheapest I could find online was almost a thousand. I think it was peak season for flights to the US then..

I don't remember the phone number, but it was Sans Travel and Tours, in West Ave. Q.C. I had to pay cash, though. It wasn't a problem, as I had the cash on-hand, so now-hubby didn't have to pay money transfer fees.

Heh. Reading this thread is so fun! My husband just can't get Tagalog right, though he so wants to learn. The words he can remember are, of course, the "bad" ones. P.I. was the first.
He actually got a phrasebook, which I don't think works that well... When he's in the mood, we have a Tagalog swapping thing in bed before we go to sleep. He usually starts with the "Sa-an po ang kubeta?" biggrin.gif

Does anyone have an idea as to when tickets to the Philippines are cheapest? I know Christmas-time is out.. so what months are in? Someone mentioned to me that Feb ticket prices are lower, but when I check online, it doesn't seem to be any different.. I'd really appreciate input.

I did get a first time immigrant discount when I got my ticket to New York. It was through a local travel agent, and it was on Korean Air. It came out the cheapest, even though Korean Air's fares are unbelievably expensive, relative to other air lines. I must say, though, that after flying AA, I totally understand why some people would be willing to shell out extra for Korean..

Anyhow, I suggest finding an agent in the PI, and compare their rates to online booking.. Taking that route saved me half the cost of online booking. But during my vacation there this past Christmas, Expedia gave me the lowest fare available. Booking with expedia, though, I had to pay some tax thing on the flight back to New York.

Considering you live where Kent State University is located, there have got to be more locations for Asian markets. You could always ask people at the Asian restaurants too.


I have been there, and I saw some things like lechon sauce and sardines in tomato sauce, but not much else in terms of Filipino ingredients. They do have a lot of Japanese food, though, which is a comfort in itself (not a lot of Japanese restos here, unlike in Manila where there's Tokyo Tokyo, Teriyaki Boy and all that). I plan on going back one of these days in the hopes of finding tocino, but if they don't have any, I'll have to get some (or a LOT) from Chicago when I visit relatives tongue.gif

oh, I miss home as well. I get homesick a LOT. Last year, it was so bad that 6 months in, my hubby actually let me go on vacation in Manila. FOR TWO MONTHS! Heh. We missed each other terribly, but it was very difficult for me to be away from my family (we're very tight-knit, even compared to other Filipino families) and my husband is very, VERY understanding. He knew what I was giving up in coming here, even more than I did, and I guess he was prepared for the homesickness.

This coming August, I'll probably be going to Chicago for a relative's wedding, and I'm betting I'm going to be very homesick then as well, what with all the relatives around, but only a couple or so people who are close to the nuclear family. But then, knowing is half the battle, and I'll be prepared smile.gif

I'm so envious that you have Filipino stores, though! There's none in my area, and that just makes it all the more difficult to make Filipino food..

I drove around for about 3 months using my Phil. license before getting one from the Ohio BMV. It was in english, so the BMV people said it was fine. When I asked for how long I could drive with it, they said, generally a year! I didn't want to be driving a whole year without a US license though, so.. I got one after I got my GC.

When we went for my AOS interview last November, the CO told me that I should not have changed my middle name (from my mother's maiden name to mine) because things are different in the US. That if I wanted to change it to my maiden name, it should be during the naturalization process. Also, that he would be crossing out my maiden name and changing it back to mother's. However, when I got my green card, my maiden name was used as my middle name. So.. I really don't know what happened tongue.gif I'm just relieved because I had records changed and such, and if the officer had his way, I would've had more name-changing problems!

I know there's a forum for bringing relatives to the US, but I'm just more comfy asking in the Phil. forums..

My cousin's mom is a USC, and is planning on petitioning for my cousin. Cousin is unmarried, just turned 21, has a daughter.

Does my aunt need to file just ONE I-130, and list my niece in it as well? Ganun ba? The relatives guide is not as comprehensive as the fiancee/spouse guide, so I'm kind of lost.. And is this one of those petitions that's going to take like 6 years to be processed? tongue.gif

PhilippinesAmerican-Filipino couple...How are you adjusting in the 1st month -1yr of Marriage?
We just crossed our first year line last month (although technically, I haven't been here a whole year, since I went back for a two-and-a-half month vacation due to extreme homesickness).

As a couple, we didn't really have any difficulties. Our biggest problem so far was when he was being stubborn about procrastinating, and I went into major tampo mode. biggrin.gif That was it.

Adjusting was more of a me-thing! Slightly major was the climate - I came here summer, but I was wearing a jacket. Come fall, I was in full winter regalia. By winter, I was back to my shorts and shirts - because I was also back in Manila! laughing.gif Biggest problem for me was the lack of family. In my family, everyone's around - my lola, my mom's siblings, their families, and so on. Even without being a social girl, I lived a technically social life. I didn't have to go to bars and such to have fun - fun was at home. When I got here, there was just me, my sweetie, and his parents. Ai, boredom was my bitterest enemy. How did I cope? I got a job, then went on vacation. Hehe. Now, I'm back, we've moved out, so I just got a job. The next vacation will have to wait.

Hay! This is my current frustration. We're both having fun cooking and experimenting, and especially eating! Kaya lumolobo na ako.. I try to take the healthy diet route, kaso ayaw ng asawa ko. Gusto daw nya yung masarap. Bata pa kasi kaya malakas ang loob na deep-fried ang chicken imbis na baked..

I think I'll drink more green tea. Sa ngayon, totally banned na ang soda sa diet ko! That was one major contributor.. hindi kasi ako mahilig sa tubig. And in the next few weeks, I'll be putting in more fruits & veggies, and less meat sa diet. Also, borrowed some dvd's from the library - dance and yoga.

Thanks for the advice! I totally agree, it's very good. My husband and I did talk about it, and we have moved out (he was insistent, actually. Our other option was that I would either a- go back to Manila and get my Master's degree, and come back afterwards, or b- I go to New Jersey and live with my Tito Boy (for free tongue.gif) and get a decent job there, get us a place, and he'd follow.. I guess he really doesn't want to leave Ohio, so we opted to rent an apartment elsewhere). Things were actually looking good, until the phone bill issue came up. Hay naku.. But anyway, yeah, I really am hoping that time will make things better. But for now, I just simmer.

I wish I had your foresight! Thing is, my MIL visited us in Manila as well way before the marriage, and we got along just fine. I just didn't expect it to be different in the long run. Otherwise, I probably would have insisted on an apartment elsewhere.

I'm enjoying being independent of the in-laws, although I still miss the family closeness I had back in Manila. That's the major cause of homesickness in my case tongue.gif Buti na lang may internet na, and my mom has learned how to chat via YM.

Nakakainggit naman! Things really were going well with the in-laws, until money matters entered the picture. I guess I was just really disappointed with the lack of support they gave, and the mapagsamantala aspect of the relationship. Even my husband's cousin was shocked at the way they were treating us.

Regarding the humbling myself part.. I actually did that, and I'm tired of it, to be honest. One of my biggest shortcomings, as some people see it, is that I have a great big giant ego tongue.gif It was difficult for me, but I did it. However, it seems to have backfired in that she thinks she can walk all over me now. I don't have any issues with the FIL. He's fine. Really, there's more to this than I can relay to y'all, but there're sensitive issues.. Let's just say I did what I could, but I'm fed up.

I'm just glad (and yes, inggit) that y'all have great in-laws!

I should've done what raquel did.. Akala ko kasi, transition would be easier when I have more family around me, even if they're in-laws.

I'm just wondering, how are you all getting along with the in-laws? There's this stereotypical in-law relationship where you just don't get along (we see it all on TV!).. is your relationship like that?

In my case, I thought we were all getting along fine.. until money matters came up.

Hubby and I are both in our mid-twenties, so when I got here, they were still a major part of the picture. We actually rented the basement from them and lived there for a year. Our phones were part of a family plan, but we paid them for part of the bill. We were an independent household, but we shared some things.

Now, we're in a different apartment, and we're breaking off from the plan because they (in-laws) were charging us way more than they charged strangers for rent (they rent out the upstairs too), and are making us pay for more than half the phone bill when they use 80-90% of the minutes. I won't mind paying for the fair share, but this is just too much. Lalo na, considering I grew up where you don't charge family rent and all that. I keep telling my husband we should just move back to manila where the house is in my name, and he won't have to work a day in his life, but syempre, it's no go..

Anyhow, because of the above-said situation, my relationship with my in-laws just took a nosedive. I know there's a culture difference, but there's also the fairness of it all. I might be being melodramatic, or overacting, but I guess that's the way I am. My husband understands my side of it though, so it hasn't affected our relationship at all. Maybe after some time has passed, we'll test the in-laws waters again..

Ate Cora, have a safe and enjoyable trip! We have a very similar post-approval time line. We got married 7/7/07 as well!

Can't say I was waiting for the thread to die.. I was being optimistic that people were just busy. But not having seen familiar faces (or names), I didn't want to "intrude" on the "new group". I'm still shy and insecure that way. But! I'm really happy to see activity on the thread now. The length of the list(s) surprises me though... it seems to be a whole lot shorter than it used to be.

I have been terribly, TERRIBLY homesick. When Sean is around, and we do things together and stuff, all's good. But when he's off to work, or I find myself alone, or.. well.. let's just say that this happens a lot.. I get very depressed. There aren't a lot of Filipinos in these parts, it seems. There was this one girl I met at friendster who's like a few blocks away, but she blocked me from her list. i guess she's not interested because she apparently has family somewhere nearby. There are no Filipino stores, and the nearest Asian one is half an hour away, and the only Filipino stuff I found were Mang Tomas, Mama Sita packets, and Ligo sardines. I got several cans of the sardines. So.. yeah. Homesick. And this, despite having been in Manila for like two months during Christmas Season. Would you people suggest therapy? My mom suggested I go if insurance covers it.. I'm still unsure.

Sorry for the rant! I just don't have a whole lot of people to talk to about this, and the VJ family has always been great. And you're probably the people who know what I'm going through the best.

I also think that the list of expenses/fees is a good idea. My removing of conditions is still a year away, but it's better to be over-prepared than under-prepared. No?

I've definitely been trying to keep up now, Mae smile.gif It's like getting in touch with old family. Which is what I'll be doing for real on the end of the month. We'll be driving (rather, I will be driving, and dear hubby Sean will be on the passenger seat) to Chicago for a wedding. I think it's where about half of my relatives in the US are, and it'll be my first time meeting some of them (the cousins, mostly).

Great hearing about all the good news! Approvals, babies.. hee! So excited for you all. Congrats Gary and Fely! We're not planning on having babies soon, so I have to live vicariously through other members. biggrin.gif
