K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresMarriage license requirements for K-1 holders
Hey RP....you asked about the Social Security number, driver's license, and ID card....

They would not allow Andre to get his Social Security number until he had his green card. We applied for AOS in August and received the green card in November. Immediately, we went to get a SSN. Then, I could add him to bank accounts and everything else.

From there, we went to the DMV and got him a state ID so he had something for Missouri. Plus, he took his driver's test to get a learner's permit. It took him a while to get the hang of driving.

Finally, on to the license. To get a state ID, permit or license in the state of Missouri, he needed to take his birth certificate, passport, green card, a piece of postmarked mail addressed to him, and social security card. I have read recently that they do verify the status of immigrants now, where before all they did was look at the green card and say okay.

There are some who seem to get their SSN and licenses faster then we did. Not sure exactly how they did/do it. No matter what I tried, this was the only order they would allow for us. In the end, it was no big deal.

Hope that helps you some.

The area you are moving to is actually in the city. Carla is right, it's beautiful (except for all the standing water in the park right now....darn spring rains!) Anyhow, you will have to go to City Hall to apply for your license since you reside in the city. Here is some info:

Marriage Licenses

To obtain a marriage license both the bride and the groom must apply together in person at the Recorder's Marriage License Department. The bride or groom may pick up the license three days after the application is made.
A fee of $48 in cash is required at time of application.

Applicants must present:

Current ID (drivers license or Birth certificate). If one of the applicant is not a US Citizen, he or she must present a valid passport and passport number.

Both must present proof of social security number (or a drivers license or pay stub). A three (3) day waiting period is required. The marriage license office can keep the license in the office up to 90 days.

Applicants have a period of 30 days to have the ceremony performed in the state of Missouri by any minister.

To request copies of old certificates:

$ 3.00 to request non certified copy.

$12.00 to request certified copy.

In order for the bride to change her name with various agencies , she will need proof of the marriage. Thus she will need to obtain the $12.00 certified copy as acceptable proof of marriage for the name change on her driver's license, social security card, etc.

Please note.........even though it said Andre needed a SSN, I called and explained that he was a K-1 visa and did not have one. They said they see it all the time with immigrants and would just use his visa number in the SSN slot on the form. It went just as they said. We had absolutely no issues with not having a SSN when applying.

Hi Realpi.

I'm in St. Louis City. When we applied for my the marriage license two years ago, all my husband needed was his birth certificate and passport with visa to apply. He did not get a SSN until the green card arrived nearly 6 months later. Our license took just 3 days to recieve after we applied.

Welcome to St. Louis. I hope you love it as much as I always have. Hopefully we'll meet at the next St. Louis meet-up that Carla organizes (HINT HINT CARLA!)

Good luck to you!

I did the same.

Funny thing about this is there is a sign on our copier that says it is illegal to copy money, passports, driver's licenses, checks,...............OMG.......besides the money part, I've broken the law way too many times. I hope nobody calls the copy police on me. I better start wearing those little glasses with the fake mustache attached, just in case!

According to the New Philippine Family Code, the child who was born out of wedlock (illegitimate child) cannot carry the name of his biological father and the father cannot have the custody of the child unless he marry the mother or he file a claim to the court to recognize the child as his. An unmarried mother legally has the sole custody of her illegitimate child. So no need of father's consent.

Really? Doesn't say much for father's rights! It makes it sound like unless he marries the mother, he has no say at all. Not very forward thinking.

In Jamaica, they don't even put the father's name on the birth certificate unless the parent's are married. Later, he and the child can undergo DNA testing and add if wanted. How crazy is that?

I always advise to be honest in every possible way. If you are uncomfortable with your answers, and it seems to me you are at this point, then you will reflect that in how and what you say.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresThose who are still waiting... When was the last time you saw your fiancé (e)?
I last saw my fiance in July and plan to go back in a month. He also applied for a Tourist visa but was denied and I know it will come up during the K1 interview. We have known each other for over 30 years but besides visiting for two weeks or three week when I go home, we have never lived together as a couple, so we both wanted a chance to try this before applying for a fiance or marriage visa and get to know each other's habits, etc. in order to avoid any future "thorns." C'est la vie! Regardless of what happens, he will continue to be my best friend, love of my love and my first (and last) crush (L)

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresStupid question?

I wish I would have thought of this when I submitted my packet. I got my husbands name on my ring finger :D

Awesome. I am not the only one. This will be my third marriage and I have no one else's name tattooed on me so it means the world to me.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresStupid question?
I have a number of tattoos but the most important ones are on my wrists back and front. My late mother, my current fiance, my daughter and my son (my fiance's son I adopted about a year ago). Will it be a stupid idea to include a picture of the tattoo of my fiance's name, in addition to other evidence for his interview? Thanks in advance for your replies.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresPre-NOA2 prep? (for my GH folks, esp)
I happen to be going to see my fiance in two weeks and we do not expect the NOA2 until May/June but I have a beautiful personalized binder (with pictures of us on the cover)filled with the replica of the petition, my tax returns for 3 yrs and the W2 for 2012, a letter from my employer, more photos of us together, and a list of questions that I have gleaned from here from other people's Ghana Consulate interview and our corresponding answers, divorce decrees, etc. which I am going to take to him. I also have a summarized version of the steps for him to expect. Police record, vaccinations, etc. I am still hoping to make it for the interview but just in case it is not possible, he should be ready for the next step with this information packet. I hope this helps

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresYOU WON"T BELIEVE THIS

After all the time and money it has taken my fiance and me to get our K-1 visa from the embassy, some IDIOT at the embassy misspells my middle name on the visa. I am not kidding !! My middle name is BERRIEN and it is spelled out on EVERY form submitted, BUT..the mental giant at the us embassy in Manila spelled it BRIEN...UNBELIEVABLE..YOU CAN"T MAKE THIS STUFF UP.
My fiance recieved her passport yesterday and today she is at the CFO seminar and they tell her the passport needs to be sent back to the embassy for correction.
Has anybody else had this happen to them? and if so what was the process to get this corrected so she can get on a plane and come here?

I am sure everything will be fine. On my previous K1 journey my then fiance's visa said female instead of male and he did not catch it until POE. They just took him to a room and asked him a few questions, including has he had a sex change, etc but he was not hassled. I am glad we did not realize this mistake earlier because we were both nervous enough without that additional worry.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHaven't seen for two years now

I have filed for my fiancee and waiting on decision, hopefully a positive one. I have kwown her since high school but we went our seperate ways and each got married and divorce. We met again when I was in Ghana in June of 2010 and decided to get back together again. I went back again in 2011 to spend the valantine day with her. I was a green card holder so I couldn't file for her. But I became I citizen in November of last year and filed k-1 for her a month after. I am wondering if not visiting her in 2012 will be a problem during the interview? I have all the evidence to prove that we have been talking and providing for her. I plan to to be with her during the interview

I just love your story. Best Wishes to You and I am sure if you show evidence of remaining in contact you should be fine. Once again, good luck!

Why do they need DNA proof for a K1? Is that part of your proof of relationship for the visa? Did you submit other proof of meeting besides that? Just wondering.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresK-1

I understand your position and appreciate the candor. I am the organized one and happen to be the petitioner and the "nagging" one also so I am taking the lead in this process. My fiance has a laid back attitude and waits untll the last minute for everything so this has truly been an exercise in patience for me so far. As previously suggested by the other posters I suggest whomever is the organizer and task-oriented one should take the lead on this one just for the sake of peace and to avoid any headaches. My fiance is great at talking me "off the ledge" when I am overwhelmed so it balances out in the end.

Good Luck!dancin5hr.gif

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresEmbassy location has been changed

Not every embassy is equipped to deal with K-1 visas.  A lot of people have to travel to another embassy.  Iranian applicants go through Ankara, Turkey.  Many African countries go through Kenya, I believe, and have to travel far there.  Even within the same country, people have to travel far sometimes. Most Canadian applicants have to travel to Montreal, an Russian applicants to Moscow.  There are good reasons for this... do you think the US should use more of their money to have year-round embassies in every city so that K-1 visa seekers, a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing, have slightly more convenience?

ranting33va.gif This is just mean. What was the point of responding to the post if you have nothing constructive to contribute to the OP's question.wow.gif His issue was having  to obtain a visa to go somewhere for an interview to obtain a US visa.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresBe at the Interview with Fiance ??

No no red flags

We were high school sweet hearts . Went different ways for 24 years after my divorce we got back together and now engaged many years of history together and many trips to Argentina to be together. Since our engagement in Dec 2012 I traveled 3 times to Argentina

Many many pics together and our families

Your story is a little similar to mine. I have known him since we were kids, rekindled our relationship 3 years ago, have been to visit 6 times, sent enough evidence (in my opinion), went to interview without me and he was asked to come back for a second interview and bring further evidence. I am going this time.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresI-129F Petition for Alien Fiance(e) Part 1 Question 14a - 14h

Back in 2005, I had applied for the Petition for Alien Fiance(e), I-129F, for my fiancé from Colombia.  Due to various circumstances, we had to break off the engagement and never went through with the process.  I did receive a letter from immigration stating that they had received the form.  Since we were no longer in a relationship, I didn't feel a need to keep the letter, never thinking that I would need it 8 years later.

In Question 14 of the I-129, it says:

Have you ever filed for this or any other alien fiancé or husband /wife before?

Obviously, I have, but now I'm having a problem answering the follow-up questions to question 14 because it is under "Part 1 Information About You."  It states:

If you answer "Yes" provide the following for each alien:

14(a)*  Alien Registration Number    *Do these refer to my (ex)fiancé or myself since this question is under Part 1 Information About You?

14(b)*  Family Name

14©*  Given Name

14(d)*  Middle Name

14(e)  Date of Filing>>>>>>> What if I don't have it?

14(f)  City or Town>>>>>>>> City where I previously filed for the petition or city where she is from?

14(g) State

14(h) Result>>>>> Should I just state that I filed a petition 8 years ago and that I do not have that information and send the current petition without filling all questions in Question 14?

I requested the date of filing through the G-639,  Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act Request, but I've heard that it can take up to 4-6 months to get a response (almost the same time it takes for the fiancé visa.  Do I really need to wait for them to respond for the filing date or can I just attach a separate letter corresponding to Question 14 to let them know why I didn't continue with the petition?

I hope this all makes sense.  Please let me know if I need to clarify. Thanks!

I hope someone more experienced with the process than I responds to you but I think you can 1. send an addendum with the application explaining that you applied previously but no longer have the details or 2. make an info pass appointment at your nearest USCIS office and request the information you need in person (that's what I did). Good Luck!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresJust received NOA2 in 24 days? Now I'm confused about the Guidelines?

For Ghana

Once you get your NOA2 wait a week and call NVC (1-603-334-0700. Press 1 for English. Press 5 for an operator) for your embassy number which starts with ACC. Once you have that wait a week or so and email the Ghana embassy (IVDVACCRA@state.gov) for your pickup date. Include Petitioner and Beneficiary birthdays, names, ACC number. They will eventually email you back (this could take upwards to a month after you have received the NOA2) with a date to pick up packet 3 (which is also packet 4-- with interview date). They schedule the interview not you. They also mail the interview letter but it takes about two months to arrive at the beneficiary?s address.

Tip for Interview ? Please give your information/evidence to an officer before you get to the final interview window because the CO at window will not ask for it and is possible to have made a decision before you get to window.

Good Luck!!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHelp! Sealed Envelope Arrived Damaged (pics, what to do)

Solution

Just as you declare what embassy you wish to be interviewed in, you should also declare your POE.

Then embassy sends to the POE and you get email/text notification that it's there and you can now POE. This resolves the missing, wrong person, stolen, ripped DNO envelopes.

But knowing this whole immigration process it will just turn into another epic clusterfrenchpie.
