CanadaMoney Money Money...
Hmph, when I negotiated my salary and moving bonus the Canadian dollar was at about 81 cents. Now it is 86.5. This sux.. but I was looking at 25 year mortgage rates in Canada today they are at 8.25% YIPES! whats going on up there??

Also, the house I sold when I left for 425K has sold again for 395K!!! Well, prices seem to be topping here too but I had 4 offers when I sold it.

Also, I used to roll cash over in TBILLS in Canada. These things paid about 3% interest and were fully taxable. Here I can roll over 28 day notes at ~4.5% and pay no state tax on them! Thats like 5% in my state.

If anybody has savings to invest here forget ING.. Use Treasury Direct, or Fidelity for the faint of heart. Thats where the best returns are right now.

I also like EmigrantDirect Savings bank if you want the same simplicity as ING. Actually, Emigrant Direct and Treasury Direct in combination will give the best yield for accounts > 30K. If you are < 30 K I think there might be better banks to use.

Anyone else have any input? There is a maze of options thats for sure. One thing I don't like about Treasury direct or Fidelity is that you buy the TBILLS at auction, usually on Tuesdays. Then they mature and you reinvest them on the next Tuesday after you get the money. It sure beats buying them on the secondary market with CIBC grabbing a point off the top for the privilege though.

CanadaQuick question!
I remember there being tape. I also remember that my wife placed it in her suitcase.. I said no way! and put it in the safe in our suite. We had to be very carefull with it so it didnt get torn or anything. It looked like it was about to fall open. But I dont remember exactly, it was a long time ago and they dont give it back to you when you cross.

CanadaCanada Post sucks

Hmm, I orderd a CD from the UK and it got to my home in British Columbia in 4 days. That was regular shipping. I think it was $4 or pounds for shipping.

I've always found Canada Post to be nice to deal with.

How the heck does the Royal Mail get here in 4 days when it take five to go from Montreal to Toronto lol.. probably cause it says ROYAL on it.

CanadaCanada Post sucks
I agree. I ordered something from the UK on Monday. I got it Yesterday. It had a value of 40.00.. if it was Canada I would still be waiting and when it did come Id have to go pick it up and pay duty and GST. Canada post blows.. I only use their Xpress post USA and it was efficient.

Hi all,
I sent my DS230 and supporting documents off to the NVC on January 20 registered through Canada Post. It has now been 20 days and they still have not gotten it to the destination. They refuse to put out a search until it has been missing 30 days. One operator at the Customer Service Centre told me that registering a letter does not guarantee delivery.... Don't you think putting a 50 cent stamp on an envelope and throwing it in the mailbox should guarantee delivery? Wow!

CanadaI-130 approved
Well, there is a slight risk that if you go back to Canada for the interview, and you are not approved, you cant go back to the US. That, and the additional travel, are the only drawbacks.

Now that your I-130 is approved it is a simple process to change your address. You only have to change it with the NVC who are infinitely more efficient than the service centers.

Yep, if you dont pay your international debts, Canadian companies are quite capable of and quite willing to ding your US credit. We have a treaty. It works both ways Hahahahaha

Actually, this is good stuff nice to see some country somewhere enforcing a few of their laws when it comes to immigration.

It was my understanding that nobody cares about the warrant except when you cross the border. These deportation orders are not enforced (still). Thats why everyone freaks out when a deportation order was issued for someone who commits a violent crime. Anyhow I find it strange that someone could get US citizenship with a Canadian warrant out for them unless they are somewhat unforthcoming about their past. Any port in a storm I guess.

Anyhow, If your husband tries to enter Canada they may arrest him. They may not simply turn him away.

Canadaquestion about moving to US
UPS will be the cheapest I think. Pack well and insure anything you care about. Some stuff may just not be worth moving. Like that old 21" CRT monitor you might be hanging on to. I moved by truck, it cost 6000.00 to move a 4 bedroom house. I thought that was fairly reasonable.

CanadaWhat about Canadian Public Service Pensions?
Well, your pension income is taxable in the USA. You will have to file a Canadian return to get your money back though. Its a bit of a chicken and the egg tyhing but basically, you need to notify the plan administrators that you now are a US resident then they will adjust the witholding to 25% from wherever it is now. Then you need to file a US return, claim the witheld tax monies on that income etc... Might want to get an accountant for it. I use David Sin at T1-1040 tax inc. Good Luck :-)

CanadaRCMP record check
You need the fingerprint deal if you have any history with the law. It takes like 6 months for them to run your prints. The consulate likes to see the RCMP check as recent as possible but I think the law makes it valid for 6 months. What I did is have my wife apply for both at the same time. The regular Name check came in a couple of days. The fingerprint one came just before her interview.

I am a bit confused about what type of record check I need. Does it need finger prints? I have always lived in one place (I lived in Banff for a few months about 13 yrs ago). Do I just go to the local RCMP and ask for one? How long does it take? How soon can I get it...how long is it good for?

CanadaFlying Air Canada to Rome
Toronto Airport clears you pretty quick. Usually 10 - 20 minutes 1/2 hour if it is tipped. As for Air Canada, picture your trip to Toronto.. then make it longer. Service depends more on equipment. I can remember flying to Gander, and switching to an L1011.. Those were the days. Fresh brewed coffe, free movies.. Now you get squat.

CanadaDual Citizenship...
For you to sponsor him, you must live or plan to live in the USA. Its called domicile. You need to be domiciled in the USA to sponsor an immigrant. Then he comes to live with you in the USA.. Maries you and applies for AOS. 3 years after being granted permanent residency he can become a US citizen. Then he can live in Canada or the US or France for that matter. He would be a tri-citizen. But he cant become a Permanent resident of the US unless he lives there. With you!

CanadaWorking for a Canadian company while waiting for EAD in USA ?
The taxes go out the frigging window.. Last year my wife made about 50K Cdn doing consulting work for her old Canadian employer. My Tax guy reported it as Canadian income and left her as a resident of Canada because the tax rate was lower due to the personal exemption and the fact that she would have to pay US socal security she made out about 500 bucks better that way.

I dont think it is kosher either. But I wouldnt hesitate to do it given the chance. I mean, who is going to know? And who are you hurting? This legislation is in place to protect American Jobs.. thats a bit of a joke since you can ship their work overseas without blinking these days. What do they expect? The Canadian firm to find a work authorized US person? Lol.. too funny.

CanadaGetting a new Can. Passport
My wife lost hers. She lost it on the day we were loading the truck for the US. I guess she threw it out. Too funny, she was crying! Anyhow, she just used her drivers licence and BC to get into the states. Then she went back and ordered a replacement no problem.

As for shots.. I dunno.. MMR, Tetnus.. check out the panel physicians website. They have a list. So does the department of State website. Bring that to your doctor. THis sis omething you should do now so its done and out of the way.

CanadaGetting a new Can. Passport
Umm.. passport office. There are lots in Toronto. They all have a lineup 500 miles long. Get there early. You hand the application in, pay your money, ask for expedited service and you have it in a week to 10 days tops.

Download the application now so you can get it filled out. Needs to be signed by a guarantor.

As for the medical. Go to your doctor, get the shots you need if any. Take your vaccination records to the panel doc and that will save you some money. Basically, Get the Canadian govt. to pay for your shots so you can leave the country :-)

You have so much lead time that I would do the DCF route for a CR1 visa and forget about the K3. When you get your Visa it is valid for six months. To keep this visa though you have to live in the US. you can travel back and forth but you need to spend most of the time in the US.

HP Sauce to be made in Netherlands, not Britain
Last Updated Wed, 10 May 2006 13:56:45 EDT
CBC News
Preferred by the likes of the Royal Family, Britain's beloved "brown sauce" will soon be manufactured in the Netherlands.

U.S.-based Heinz Co. has announced that it will shut the Birmingham plant that makes HP Sauce in March 2007, throwing 125 people out of work.

The American company, which bought HP Foods last year, said the move will improve productivity.

A spokesperson for the Transport and General Workers Union called the move a "savage decision," saying they had been told the workers' jobs would be safe.

Developed in the early 1900s and first sold in 1903 under the HP brand, HP Sauce holds a Royal Warrant, meaning the product has been supplied to members of the Royal Family. The Royal Arms insignia on the bottle reads: "By Appointment ... Outfitters to HM The Queen."

Made with tamarinds, dates and spices, HP Sauce is said to named after the Houses of Parliament, where it was served in the dining room.

If we threw the cigs in the garbage then there would be a lot of garbage fires :-)

lol.. too much.. I think its great they are putting more restrictions in place. I thought a total ban would be the way to go but they haven't done that. I think smoking, in general, is now an antisocial act for people who are just starting.

Long time smokers are of course just hopelessly addicted and even with a total ban will find a way to import them.

I cant wait till the holier than thou crowd zooms in on the next anti social behaviour. I wonder what it will be?

Correction, You HAD good credit in Canada.

Now with the late payment, through no fault of your own its probably sewered. You'll have to do some work to get the bank to change the data they sent to the credit bureaus about these payments.

The BC they want will have your parents names on it. Its a form basically that you fill in when you apply for a birth certificate. It has your mom and dads name on it and their place of birth along with other info. If you dont have that you need to get a certified copy from your province. It should be easy to google. New Brunswick birth certificate or whatever.
