Africa: Sub-SaharanTime between Case Complete and Interview in Ghana

Thanks for your reply.

My fiance (now husband) waited about 1 month from case complete at NVC until his interview date in Ghana.  If I remember case complete at NVC was the middle of December 2013 and his interview was the end of January 2014.

Africa: Sub-SaharanHow to Pay K1 Visa Fee in Ghana

I just went through the Accra embassy in January 2014.  Once you get the call-in letter (it is supposed to come by mail, my fiance never got it though so we e-mailed the embassy and we were allowed to come with the e-mail reply they sent), it will instruct you to go there on Wednesday morning.  You will then have to come back later in the day to pick up the paperwork, which will also have your interview date and time.  Our interview date and time was about 5 weeks from the date the packet was picked up.

You pay the fee in Accra on the day of your interview.  If I remember right, we were told to pay in USD, it should say in the packet of paperwork you pick up.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresAOS/tax returns - not living in US for 8 years/with joint sponsor
Not really the answer to your question but...If you're a US citizen I think you were still supposed to file US taxes...As a US citizen you're taxed on income you earn anywhere in the world.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresWhy did you file a K-1 over a CR-1?

This makes no sense to me but perhaps it's based on individual terms.

My health insurance adds benefits whenever a qualified change happens. So I added my Wife effective a month after our marriage date.

Yes, my insurance works the same way.  But what's the point in adding my husband on my insurance and paying for the premiums if he's not in the United States. So I'll have to wait for the enrollment period at the end of the calendar year in which he comes to the US.  That being said, if he comes to the US in February, i would have to wait until January the following year to add him.

Please explain further why you think health insurance reasons would affect your CR1.

If we file for the K1 and get married in the US, then i can get health insurance right away for my husband.  If we get married in Ghana and file the CR-1, if for example his POE is in February, I couldn't add him to my health insurance until January 1st of the following year.  Most health insurances have an enrollment period towards the end of the year for the next calendar year.  So we could potentially go almost a whole year with no health insurance, unless I look for individual health insurance which is very expensive.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresWhy did you file a K-1 over a CR-1?

I am in the same boat, in a high fraud consulate, Ghana.  I'm trying to decide what to do, K-1 or CR-1.  We initially were going to get married and do the CR-1, as the filing is cheaper.  But now we've switched to the K-1, mostly because of health insurance reasons.  My insurance only allows me to add people at the time of being married or at January 1st of each year.  In all the reading I've done, I'm worried about all the processing time for the K-1 and then end up getting denied.  When we file for either one, we will have visited each other 2 x's, as that's all we can afford.  I don't know what to do....:-(

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresLegal documentation needed for K-2 visa?

Suggest that you get the child's immigration authorization letter notarized.

Do you know what sort of authorization letter we need?  Is there any specific document?  Or will any notarized letter from the mother stating that she is giving permission for her son to permanently immigrate to the US with the father suffice?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresLegal documentation needed for K-2 visa?

Hello,

I am the US citizen and am petitioning for my fiancé and his child who both live in Ghana.  I?m wondering if anyone knows what legal documentation will be required at the embassy in Ghana then applying for the K-2 visa?  My fiancé obtained custody of his son in June of 2013.  The mother lives in Liberia and he traveled there in June and brought his son back to Ghana.  In order to bring him from Liberia to Ghana he obtained a signed affidavit from the mother giving permission for the son to travel to Ghana, but it does not state permission to bring him to the US. They were never married and have no signed custody agreement to provide to the embassy.  The mother has agreed to sign whatever is needed to allow the K-2 visa.  Any input will be appreciated!  Thank you.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresK-1 Fiancee mailing address.. Could i use my address?
We used an in c/o of as well as my then fiancé's mailing address since there was no mail delivery where he lived. As it turned out, when our case made it to the embassy they mailed the letter and he never got it anyways. We ended up emailing them and they let us come to the embassy with their email response

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresK1 and K2 coming Oct 14th. Go over my checklist please? and, health insurance?
Yes apply for the EAD for both of them, it's free when applying along with AOS. Print off the I94 for both of them after they enter the US, you'll need that at the SS office. For the K2 you'll have to go back to the SS office after they both get their work authorization cards. I asked them when I was there why a 2 year old needs a work authorization card to get a SS card and they couldn't really give me an answer but that's how they do it. If someone knows the why I'd be curious myself.

Thank you guys! This all helps so much. They arrive in 2 days!

Regarding SSN, the K2 is 9 years old. Get him an EAD anyway?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresK1 and K2 coming Oct 14th. Go over my checklist please? and, health insurance?
When my K1 and K2 came I bought an emergency policy for them until we got married. It was like 100 bucks for 45 days. Then my work insurance covered both of them when we got married. I didn't have to adopt my step son.
