Do I read your timeline properly? You already have a biometrics appt? Is that normal?

Don't know what is normal when it comes on to USCIS, but I thank God, it's moving along.....nothing beats praying and waiting (of course anxiously  )

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresWill significant age difference pose a problem in interview date? Please help!

:( ... This makes me sad even though its reality and I do need to be patient... We have no paperwork of that sort, just records of him visiting me and the wedding photos... I will discuss opening a shared bank account with him.. Thanks so much for your response, much appreciated!

I'm not a picture person either, so I don't think we have 5 pics together, but your hubby's tickets ever 3-mths for the past how many years is a damn good evidence. As another person said get yourself a camera or phone and start taking pics all over the place and even get you added to one of his accounts. Don't worry...you won't have any problems proving something true.

CanadaFinding info about former spouses
Just heard back from vital stats office, apparently they can't help regarding birthdates....I found a blurb on a different province that says you CAN get a certified letter of birth info on a previous spouse so am printing that to take to town.
I have the courthouse right and there is some kind of child custody/support record there for the date of the divorce, and now I have a "probable" file number from Ottawa so back to the courthouse.
It's the 325a form that wants birthdates and is driving me insane! Even once I have both divorce certificates I still need these wretched birthdates. I bet if this was a less civilised country I could slip someone a hundred bucks to accidentally turn away from their monitor for a minute....

CanadaFinding info about former spouses
This is in Canada. I can't believe I'm so stressed and haven't even filed the papers yet!!Apparently the record of my divorce is somehow missing at the courthouse where it was filed so there will be some kind of archival paper chase. Meanwhile I have to stay home waiting for delivery by courier of my birth certificate. Government officials here are very nice but aren't allowed to tell you things that are on the computer screen in front of them....I never dreamed my soulmate would be in another country!

CanadaFinding info about former spouses

Has anyone else had this headache and what did you do? I'm trying to find birthdates for former spouses-from 20 and 30 years ago. I did manage to get the divorce certificate for one- which does not have the birthdate on it. I can't get a certificate from the other as it doesn't show up at the courthouse and the central registry needs a birthdate to find it! I've done the google thing to no avail. I wonder if I should go plant myself at vital stats office- with a bucket full of money no doubt.....

Canadaif you could have the same job, same salary, would you choose Canada or the US?
Hubby to be's business and huge family are in the states, but definitely my part of Canada has far nicer climate, way better food, and no pollution. We'll probably retire in Canada. We chose to live in US as I really think it would be tough on him to go from being so well known where he is to being just another person here. And definitely there's way more recreation type stuff here, but a lot of the differences are also Midwest versus coast. Our number one reason to live in Canada would be medical though.

CanadaGoing to miss Canada

I was so worried about missing the west coast of Canada, but as it turns out I don't care if I ever go back. I've been here in Iowa for about 7 weeks while waiting to go back to Vancouver for my interview. I've started saying I'm from "near Seattle" as often people don't know where British Columbia is. Sometimes Seattle doesn't ring a bell either. People who do know I'm Canadian sometimes get a funny look and ask "don't you speak French" .  In small town Midwest it's highly unusual to see a license plate from another state, let alone another country- people stop and stare. I have my dogs with me and take them lots of places and it's been a great ice-breaker, more strangers talk to me than without them.

Healthcare is definitely a big worry. My hubby to be is self employed and currently has no healthcare plan, but we absolutely have to once we are married so even though he doesn't really want me to work, I feel like I should get any kind of job just for the medical benefits.

Nobody has even heard of a perogy. A bag is a sack. A toilet is a stool. Bacon is bacon, there ain't no back bacon.  Prescription drugs are expensive, vitamins are cheaper. Mail gets delivered on Saturdays. The library has no such thing as a british murder mystery. Learn to say "huh" instead of  "eh". I would kill for some fresh fish!

Wine in the Midwest is sweet. If you like decent European wine, don't plan on buying it here. I got some Washington state white though and it reminded me of the beach.

The trains are so cool! Coming from Vancouver island, they're fun to see. It goes by here a couple hundred feet from the driveway, the engineer always waves.

Most of all, don't worry about missing things, just immerse yourself in the new life. I never thought it would be so easy, and I really was the most beach/fishing oriented person. Being with the absolute love of your life is great!

CanadaChanging Canadian Class 1 to US CDL license

This is a long shot but...I have a Canadian class 1 license, and was told by a DOT guy that I could just transfer it over to a CDL.  After calling an official they say no, I have to do the whole test thing. Has anyone had experience of this? To complicate things I just got a DL medical that has to be done in 45 days, and it'll be iffy if I'll be getting my US one by then. Obviously if it doesn't transfer over it doesn't matter. I can get a chauffeurs license but I suspect that won't get me a 1 if I move back to Canada at some point.  Yeesh!!

CanadaImporting my Vehicle into the U.S.
Be sure to also check with your insurance agent. Coming from beautiful BC I had to cancel my private portion of insurance and get WAY more expensive ICBC insurance- something called "territory Z". Our insurance agent here (Iowa) would insure it if I put my fiancé's name on it, other than that they want SSN. It's apparently different from just visiting because you are permanently leaving the country. Just when I thought the money drain had slowed down....

CanadaOrdering Canadian Food Products Online

It's not a food product but...I've found in this small Midwest town it's impossible to get a skin lotion that does not have mineral oil or petrolatum in it. I'm really allergic to both. I normally use Herbacin in Canada, in the unscented but it looks like you can only get the scented one here, and have to go to the big city for that. Will be checking out getting that online.  It's all an interesting adventure.

Also, I got a different brand of cinnamon, problem solved.

Does anyone know what's with the American cinnamon? It tastes very different from what we have in Canada. It's like it's sweeter or something. My fiancé notices it too so it's not just me. Gives my pies and turnovers an odd taste. Another thing to bring in huge amounts when we come back permanently!

CanadaOrdering Canadian Food Products Online

I never thought to look at Amazon for that stuff.  the VH stuff i miss so bad especially the dry garlic spare rib sauce.  Luckily some of the little ethnic stores carry my 5 roses flour yay.  i was soo excited to see that cuz the flour here sucks lol.  they only use soft wheat whereas up north its all hard wheat = higher protein=more gluten = better fro baking vol au vonts etc. smile.png

I'm glad I saw this, couldn't figure out what was wrong with the flour down there, the texture is just weird. The biggest problem I find in the Midwest is the lack of organic produce, I guess they don't have greenhouses going locally all winter like on the coast. It's good to know about the coffee crisp, I'll send a bunch with my red rose tea! Ooh, and coffee, I'm coming from a town that has a couple dozen coffee roasters....

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresDivorce decree cannot be found?
I'm having this problem right now. Went merrily down to the courthouse and got divorce certificate from 10 years ago but not the one from 20 years ago! Am trying the national registry tomorrow, but I'm wondering if this is due to changing to electronic stuff, the child support record was there but not the divorce. I paid for the original event so I know it happened!
As a side note Oh my goodness Canada has the most expensive documents- 60 dollars for birth certificate, and 40 each for divorce....

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHelp with phone records?

Has anyone else had this issue....I finally got all my paperwork to send in our I129, and when I tried to print off the record of texts it wouldn't show up, apparently this is some kind of built in privacy thing. I've talked to managers at Telus- this is Canada- and there's nothing they can do. I have pay as you go and I buy unlimited texting to US. I can see the darn thing on the screen but there is no way to get it on paper, I've tried clipping and copying. Same deal with my landline, I have unlimited so it doesn't show calls, but they can send me a log in two weeks. Hopefully sweetie will have more luck with his provider. Cuz other than that we have NO proof of ongoing relationship, for someone I talk to minimum 2 hours a day!! We rarely email, he wears a headset all day so can call when he's doing other stuff. I swear to god I'm gonna lose my mind over this.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresGetting engaged without a big proposal?
Our "proposal" was simply a part of a conversation as well, but the big shocker was 2 days later when he pulled up in front of a jewelry store and insisted on buying a ring- and the one that we both really really liked actually fit-that was the unforgettable moment for both of us. Hmm, I bet those interviewer guys could tell some interesting stories!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresDS-160 help. I am not in my country of residence.

re: the criminal record check When I called my local RCMP the nice lady on the phone did a quick check of the records to see if I could get the check with no prob. Apparently what happens is if somebody else has your same name and birthdate and a record then it takes longer. I seem to think it was going to be around 65$ and they print it right away. Because the ds160 is all online you can be in Timbuktu and it wouldn't matter. Thank heavens. You know, you could probably give your home rcmp a call and just get verification from them so you know for sure. There's enough stress to this process without the unknowns.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresDS-160 help. I am not in my country of residence.
I'm also in the US waiting til it's time to go do my interview. I've been chipping away at the DS160 online. I already checked in Canada before I left that I could get my police report over the counter so that's ok. I emailed the consulate asking them to send the packet 3 by email, there was a post on here in the Canada section with the exact wording that someone else used. They did reply but haven't got my stuff yet. Absolutely everything seems so confusing and I end up overthinking and feeling like an absolute numbskull!

Help! When I filled out my I129 I only listed my youngest child, who is 17. The others are most definitely adults. Now that I'm doing the DS160 I'm wondering if they want to know about the adults too? Has anyone else gone through this? I figured they aren't children anymore. What happens if they all the sudden appear on the 160 and weren't mentioned before? Yeesh this is stressful!

I'm not very computer literate- I'm trying to upload my photo, I scanned it, then it was tiny so I made it larger, but it still says it isn't big enough. Is the pixels something to do with the person who took the photo? I had it done at walmart and I'm wondering if that's what it is. No matter what I do it just keeps saying it isn't big enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresCost of immunisations in US!
Good grief, here's thinking I did my research when I called the local clinic to find out where to get them. I have a feeling they saw me comin....The quote over the phone was only 100, then after the fact it was more. It's taking me a bit to realise that medicine is a money making enterprise here. My travel insurance only covers emergencies unfortunately, it's not like a regular insurance plan.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresCost of immunisations in US!

A heads up for anyone else waiting out their k1 in the US and planning on updating shots here- I just had my MMR at a cost of $199. Yikes. Was trying to get all my ducks in a row, they are very expensive ducks.

Sometimes I fear we're going to go through all this nonsense and then we'll end up moving back to Canada due to the cost of health care.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresWhy is medical examination so expensive in London??

Is there a comprehensive list of expenses somewhere on this site? I'd like to prepared for it as much as possible. I had no idea the medical alone would be so much!

We've found it's not the actual fees that are the killer, but all the little stuff that adds up- like getting the proper copies of certificates, papers and shots if moving pets, criminal record check, not to mention travel expenses if you're visiting in between. If you live a distance from the medical clinic, and/or the consulate then factor in travelling for that as well. And don't forget about clothes and stuff if moving to a different climate!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresNever Met My Fiance
Wow, these folks have some challenges ahead!
Unfortunately, I'm a huge advocate of PD as it DOES enable people to live close to normal lives. I spent a YEAR travelling with my 16 year old son, and all his PD equipment. Suppliers can and will ship supplies to most any destination. You can drive and take your stuff with you. You can do the exchanges manually and don't need to plug in. We went hunting and had to warm the bags of fluid in our sleeping bags. It's as close to freedom as you get with kidney disease.
Hopefully whoever makes the final call on their case doesn't know this.
I agree, the petitioner maybe should consider a short trip to see his lovely fiancée, sounds like a great excuse for a romantic getaway.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresYes, you can visit!
Well, was I ever surprised when I came back to Canada after 3 and a half months. They grilled me as to why I hadn't brought any purchases with me (I'm just back in Canada for my medical and interview), hadn't brought any gifts with me. Accused me of not declaring my engagement ring on last trip, and THEN searched my vehicle. I had an oil change and alignment done while there and were peeved I didn't realise I needed to claim that. All this with my dog who just had her eyes removed- and I'd been driving 22 hours at this point. The guard also wanted to know if I also had all my papers in order for my interview (this is Canadian officer, what the heck business is it of hers!), and why isn't my fiancé with me, where is he and what is he doing there. They were neat with my stuff though, and didn't even look into the dog's bag of prescription meds. Then "you can go now" , no welcome home or anything. Maybe fallout from the full moon on Friday the 13th??

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresYes, you can visit!

Well, my fiance and I are in sunny cold Iowa. Border guys weren't even interested in the dogs rabies papers. When you cross from Victoria BC to Port Angeles in Washington state you go through the grilling on the US side. The guys are somewhat under shelter but it was 4 pm, freezing cold, blowing rain. The officer asked where we lived, how we met and then how long I was going for. When I told him 2 and a half months he actually groaned. Then he looked through the rain at the toolbox in my truck box, asked what I do for a living (landscaper) and if I was carrying anything he should know about and then told us to go on through. So, for what it's worth the guys on Vancouver Island do definitely seem to be more low key.

I know, I've visited several countries and it never entered my mind that I would be questioned, and I never have been. Now, all the sudden I feel like a criminal. We're going to try border crossing tomorrow- me, my American fiancé, both my dogs, I'm self employed so no letter from employer. All I have with me is utility bills (no mortgage or lease as I own my house), I have an email from dog insurance company that we're covered on vacation, 2 months emergency medical for me, and they can call my kids who I'm going to visit on my way home, or they can call the housesitter. Hmm, also carrying flour, Coffee Crisp, Red Rose tea, Rogers porridge....
