Yeah, I've been doing round trip (we both live in the U.S. and we're flying home to see his parents), from Detroit to Kyiv. I'm noticing that there definitely aren't as many flights to Kyiv anymore and it's making me nervous!

WHAT is going on with flights to Ukraine? I used to get them all the time for about $800 or $900. I honestly can't find anything under $1700 or $1800 (without being 27 hrs long). I actually checked on British Airways and was quoted a price of $7400 for ONE ticket?! I was hoping some of the other Ukrainie visajourney-ers had some advice! I've tried Delta/KLM, BA, kayak, momondo, tripadvisor...

I just got back from Ukraine...lived in a village there for a little more than 2 years...and the average price of a ticket is about $854-$900. The prices must just be higher temporarily or something (hopefully) but all these quotes I've been seeing seem ridiculously high! Good luck, and if you have anymore Ukraine questions, just ask. As someone previously said, trains very often do the odd/even day route. It's very easy to purchase tickets 'on the fly' and there are actually limits as to how early you can purchase a train ticket. I definitely DEFINITELY would not get in the morning of an interview, unless you were taking a taxi from Kherson to Kyiv. Your fiance should be able to get the number to the train station, especially if she is located in a big city. Don't bother making an appt. based on transportation, as it is extremely unreliable! Just get there a day in advance. (You have to get to the bank (ProCredit) early anyways to pay the interview fee). They do have appointments at different times of the day...but still, having to go to the bank in the morning, I would make sure you are there the night before. Apartments are very cheap to rent in Kyiv ($80/night) and they're nice. If you'd like a number (for an English speaking company I could give you one). Good luck!

hey...

i just got done living in ukraine (27 months) there are def. trains from sevastopol...they both get in at 11:20am though. (I didn't search very well). Your best bet (especially with an early flight) is to just get up there the night before. Transportation in Ukraine is REALLY unreliable...and it will take you awhile to get from the bus/train station out to Boryspil airport. Definitely wouldn't take any chances with a flight. I doubt a train from Sevastopol would cost you any more than $35-50 (and that would probably get you better than the lowest type of fare). Good luck, and if you need something else, just ask.

Thanks for that information!

Right now the gryvna is weak in Ukraine (so that's good for Americans). My fiance told me right now it's 8 or 10 gryven to one dollar. When I was living there it was 5 gryven to a dollar. It makes it a lot harder on Ukrainians though...

As for our timeline, thanks for asking!

I'm trying to plan out grad school and a job here, so we want to wait a little for the interview. We're going to do it sometime around the end of April. I'll be giving the embassy a call sometime this week. I'll be in Ukraine from 4/17-5/11 (and I'm SO excited)! We (my fiance and I) don't want him too arrive and have us stuck at my parents' house. I feel like that would be a little irresponsible. I know sooner is almost always better but in this case we're being a little more cautious. It's not easy to be young just starting out...

Hmmm

We just had one done back in late August. I don't think we had the option of expediting it. It took about 2 months. There might be some 'under the table' sort of payment you could do. But then again, Donetsk is a huge city, much larger than our oblast center, so you may have more luck! Plus, you might have more options since she's now living in the U.S. (They could try to expedite it for you because of this).

So I sent an email to the embassy in Kyiv and I just wanted to make sure they knew that I'd be attending the interview with my fiance.
They sent me this reply:

Thank you for your inquiry of March 25, 2009. Please be informed that your presence at the interview is optional and will not influence the decision of the Consular officer. Although you may accompany your fiancé to the interview you will not be able to attend it in full.

Almost sounds as if they'd rather not have me there

yes i'm definitely going to be there! for me, i feel better knowing that there are two of us double-checking everything rather than one...especially with all the paperwork, fees and i've heard stories about waiting in line at the embassy (even though you can jump the line). should we have to fix something on the paperwork, i wouldn't want him scrambling around by himself. every situation is different, depending on your fiance/ee's level of english and comfort in going alone. i think i get around kyiv better than my fiance does smile.gif but that's just our particular situation! haha. plus, it's a good excuse for another visit to my future in-laws and my village where i taught english! good luck and keep us all updated!

I appreciate everyone's responses, but I also know that you only need an employer's letter or bank statement if you're using your job or checking account as proof for the income requirement. It is definitely NOT necessary. For example, my dad is retired, and has enough money, we don't even need to bother with employment letters and bank statements. You only need that if you have to use a combination of assets/sources of money to prove you are over the poverty level.

Basically what I want to know is WHAT am I trying to prove, if I know I'm ineligible. That's why I need a co-sponsor...

Yes I understand that, my father is my co-sponsor. That wasn't my question. I still have to file MY I-134. He's wrong. As a US Citizen you are not "sponsored". Your father's household size is four.


I stand corrected. However it begs a clarification. Somewhere the US citizen must be "counted" though I agree that you should not be counted twice. Sorry. In retrospect, YOUR I-134 would be for TWO (you and your fiance) and your father's would be for FOUR (himself, mother, sister and co-sponsor of fiance). I have made the error of mixing taxes with sponsorship. Your fiance will not be a "dependent" on your father's taxes (or should not be), but he WILL be counted in the family size as he is being sponsored by your father. Being counted on the I-134 does not make one a "dependent" in the eyes of the IRS, and that is where I gave a confusing answer. I never intended to say you would be a "dependent" on your father's taxes, but my garbled words would be the reason you thought so. smile.gif


Of course the USC is counted. They are counted in their own household.

Pardon my whining, but I just cannot BELIEVE how long this takes. I'm a federal employee myself and I can't understand what takes 6 months or more to get these applications processed?! If I had work sit for that long I'd have a whole lot of questions being asked...

I find it extremely frustrating that we only have an 800-number to call...only to receive the same canned answer that appears on the USCIS case status site.

So this problem has yet to affect me and my fiance, however in reading other filers frustrations with USCIS's 'name check excuse' I decided to search for information about the name check process. I found this link, which is a congressional testimony, from the Records Management Division of the FBI. It's old, from 2003, and it might not answer anyone's questions, but I thought it was kind of interesting to read and thought some of you would be interested as well!

UGH. already problems. I called NVC (i know it's a little early) but the woman i spoke with at the NVC said that we should wait 90 days for them to receive the information from immigration?! What the h e l l?!?! 90 days? I have never read that on this site before! I asked...even for a K1 visa? and she said yes. Please tell me this isn't true?

You actually don't need a letter from your employer. You need to prove to the government you make over (is it 125%?) the poverty level for your household size. If your W-2s and tax returns show that you do, then you need no other proof. However, if you don't make that much money, then you need to submit other documents (like stocks & bonds, bank account statements, etc)

As funny as all that sounded, it really is how the letter goes - I think I have three of them.
I dont have a manager or supervisor I dont think, but here is a list of about all the top management all over USCIS (Director in Washington has changed though. Beyond that, "officers" names within seem to only be last name. And from talking to one, I think it was some kid they hired for minumum wage that wasnt able to make it out of Jr. High School (maybe even elementary).

Anyway, here is the file with names.



The Voice...? Is that the Voice as in the newspaper? I did a double take and then saw you're from the Detroit area! haha ..we're (kind of) neighbors. (but then again i think..why would the Voice be on a USCIS document?) haha
