That's great you have it already.
If you have ever lived in another country for more than 12 months since age 16 you need one from that country too.

Yes,I need one from my born country.
And now I am bothering about"living" because I worked in Vietnam and total was near 2 years.
It's temporary and for business only.
I never stayed there six month periods at one time.

I post here about DS230 Question 30.

http://www.visajourn..._1#entry5491204

I think I should make this topic only for Australian pcc.
That's why I post another topic.
Thank you for your kind reminder.

The one you get in Victoria will be a National Police Check. It doesn't matter which state you go through (you go through the one that you are currently living in). They all use the same database to run the check. You don't have to get one from NSW as well.

Just make sure you get the fingerprints and name check.

Yes!!!!
I don't need to pay extra money for it.
Actually,I received my PCC 1 month ago with fingerprint check.
cost $ 137,only 1 day processing time and 3 days later got it, so fast!

Thank you for your reply!

Fingerprints are a requirements. I don't know who you spoke to but they're wrong. However if you don't want to trust us, feel free to just get the name one and see what happens.

I am a little confused. :help:
Now, I am in Victoria state.
And from my understanding,Australian police certificate is a national police check.
Does it represent only for Victoria state or national? no matter before I lived in Sydney for a couple of months? Or I have to apply another pcc for NSW? :crying:

Well for K-1 you need the full background/history with fingerprints, I assume it would be the same for most visa's. Don't know which state you're in but in SA there two different ones, you'll be wanting the more expensive one, it's about $150. Not sure about other states though.

Just to be Clear, im in Tasmania and my question is Do we need to get both Australian Federal and State Police C. or Just the State Police C. will Work for NVC or Consulate????

I did CR-1, so my experience with F2A visas is limited, but imagine that the PCC requirements would be the same.

This link is to the US Embassy Canberra website and details the process for obtaining PCC for each state.

They are valid for 12mths.

Hope this helps :)

Helpful, thanks !!!

Australia and New ZealandPerth Medical + Interview

I am currently waiting on my NOA2, in Perth, Western Australia (5.5 months now) but I was wondering about medicals. I have read before that they perform vision and hearing tests as part of the exam... I'm wondering how they go about (or what they do) dealing with someone with a hearing loss?? It is something I have had from birth and while it is classed as severe, I wear hearing aids & do not at all rely on ASL. I function just fine within the 'normal' community (I have a job, etc). I suppose my question here is, can they simply fail my medical because they don't like the fact I am hard of hearing??

Another question I had was about the Interviews. I've noticed pretty much all Aussies have to head to Sydney, NSW for it... Is this the case for those in Perth, Western Australia, too?? Because that would really put a dent in our savings if I have to fly all the way across the whole country for just a few hours! Of course, I'll still do it, but it would be nice to hear from any other Western Australians who have been experienced/been through this, so that I can prepare myself!

Thanks so much, I appreciate any responses.

Sorry, Can't help you with the medical but yes, the interview for a K-1 visa is conducted in Sydney only and will always be on a Tuesday for a K1 Visa. They give you approximately a month notice (unless you're successful in requesting an earlier interview.

Australia and New ZealandK1 Visa - To marry my girlfriend in the states, guidance needed!

My girlfriend and I have been dating for a very long time now, since 2007 - we met online and have been inseparable since. After 3-years of endless hour upon hour a day Skype calls, in 2010 I took my first visit there for Christmas for two weeks to finally meet her in person, and had a great time. Over the next couple of years we have had many continued visits - I've visited America three times now, for a total of about 4-months, and she has visited me here in Australia twice, for also a total of about 4-months.

She recently left from her trip here in Australia (less than 2-weeks ago) and we've both decided we would love to finally marry and for me to move to the US with her. I'm honestly a bit intimidated and overwhelmed on just where to start on the K1 Visa, and what's the best way of handling things.

I have a starter question first that I really need to have settled,

Are any education requirements needed to pursue the K1 Visa on my behalf? I did not graduate high-school.

Aside from this, what are some of the first steps as an Australian do I need to be prepared (or should be preparing for) while filing the K1 Visa application?

-Thank you very much.

She will do the I-129F (petition for Fiance visa), which can take 3 to months.

Once that's approved, you will do the K1 (fiance visa).

Read up on the links mentioned above and come back to the site for questions.

And there is no education requirement on either side.

As long as you guys are legally able to marry and she (US Citizen) can prove that

she makes at least 125% of the poverty guideline income.

If she doesn't make that income, then she can try to get a co-sponsor

like her parents or other relatives.

Be sure to save all the airline travel records, communication logs, pictures, etc.

to prove that you met at least once in the past 2 years and that you guys have a

bona fide relationship.

Also, the entire cost for going through the K1 visa and following processing could cost

$3000+ so keep that in budget as well.

Australia and New ZealandPerth Medical + Interview

Hi charlottelizabeth,

I too am in Perth, and yes we have to got to Sydney!

About your medical, I am certainly no expert but I am confident your hearing loss wont be a big issue, use the search button (top right) to refine your information search - use key words.

I attended the Altone Medical Centre for my medical - Dr Elizabeth Sinclair. She was wonderful and the staff there were more than helpful.I suggest you might be able to phone the centre to ask your question also. Tell them you are calling about American Visa requirements and they may be able to check with the doctor and call you back.

best wishes,

Gabby

Thanks so much for the reply, I was leaning towards seeing Dr. Sinclair for my medical, so it is a relief to know that she and her staff are nice!
Well, assuming my NOA2 arrives ok, then I guess I am Sydney bound! Think they need an American consulate in Perth though! Going to be quite a trek! Hopefully all is approved.

Good luck to you in your endeavours
Charlotte.

I am a bit confused..

I am also getting an Australian Police certificate for my CR-1 visa, and contacted the NVC in May of this year to ask if I need fingerprint checks also and they said no.

According to the Australian Federal Police website:
Fingerprint checks

"Fingerprint checks may only be conducted where there is a legal or regulatory requirement for such a check to be conducted."

So, it appears that it is not a requirement to get fingerprint checks in addition to the name check?

Australia and New ZealandShipping boxes from Melbourne... What company???

Thank you.  Yea, I was recently there and brought a full suitcase back with me.  He is gonna bring two big ones himself with a carry on.  Lots of it is his clothes lol-  band t shirts and what-not.   :P  He won't part with them, and I wouldn't even ask it.

I guess we just pay the outrageous price.  Aus Post has quite a monopoly going over there.   Boo.

They really do. Their prices are pretty outlandish. And understandable about the band t-shirts; we've all got something! You can fit a lot in a suitcase, though (as I'm sure you know). It took me an afternoon to utilise all my space, but it ended up being 74.7lbs on the airport scale. ;) It can be done.

Also, consider saving things that aren't vital for relos visiting. My mum is coming out this year to visit and I'll be sure to give her a suitcase of more stuff to bring over, bless her heart.

Australia and New ZealandShipping boxes from Melbourne... What company???

I couldn't find anything reasonably priced. Freight costs were $200+ and AusPost was much the same. In the end, we took a trip to Australia to visit my family (we figured two birds with one stone), and had four suitcases between us weighing 75lbs each. I was AOS though, and not K1, so I'm not sure how viable this is for him, or how much he has to take back with him. I figured in the end that most clothes were replaceable, DVDs had regions, and a lot of things could be rebought over time.

Australia and New ZealandIR1 and domicile
Our situation is similar... Re-establishing domicile rather than proof of existing domicile. A couple of things I sent:

- Statement that I had lodged my tax in the US - proof was last 3 years returns
- Letter from my aunt and uncle stating we could live with them indefinitely until we find our own place
- Emails with real estate agent over there enquiring about rentals
- Quote for storage of our goods here along with shipping them to the US
- Contract for sale of our house here in Aus
- Emails with accountant here discussing status for tax purposes (resident/non-resident)
- Bank account statements from the US

All was accepted by NVC, hoping the consulate will also accept it at the interview.

Edit: I should note, we opted to send a combination of documents showing that I am re-establishing domicile in the US as much as "cutting ties" with Aus. Hope that helps.

Yes, CR1 applicants do send their police certificates to NVC. But a fingerrint check is still not required. I am a CR1 and got my Australian police certificate based only on name check. No issues.

I got a name check only which was accepted at my K1 interview.

BUT! I have noticed that CR1 applicants need to send their police certificate to the NVC (is this correct?) and that NVC only accept police certificates based on fingerprints.

K1 seems to be different cos we take ours to the Sydney consulate itself.

If he gets his passport back by Friday which is often the case for Sydney, the flights don't vary too much in price! The ticket I purchased has hovered around the same price or within $100. Ps. TSC has suddenly transferred HEAPS of petitions!

Australia and New ZealandApproved at interview! My Sydney consulate experience...

Hi all

I had my final visa interview on Tuesday morning and it went well - only took about an hour all up and I've been approved. Here's how it played out for those who are preparing for theirs:

  • My appointment time was 8.30am but I showed up at 8am since I was in the city already. I went up to Level 10 (reception) where you need to go through security.

  • Security is similar to at an airport - you put your bag/s through a scanner and go through a metal detector yourself. You can't take any electronic devices, USB sticks or even CDs with you... in my case the clinic that did my medical included a CD with my chest x-rays and as a result I wasn't allowed to take the envelope up to the interview. More on that later.

  • I took all the docs requested in the interview letter as well as copies of the forms I'd submitted previously, just in case I needed to refer to any of those. I should have taken a book or magazine because in the interview room there are only women's mags :-P

  • The first step once my number was called was a bunch of admin stuff - handing over my passport, prepaid envelope and the two US passport photos, doing fingerprints etc. I basically stood at the window while the lady looked through documents for 10-15 minutes.

  • I had to go back down to reception to get my medical envelope because of the security issue I mentioned earlier. They made me open the envelope and take out the CD, then take the rest of the materials back up.

  • After the admin stuff I sat and waited for 15-20 minutes for my interview. This was with an American officer who literally asked me 6 questions: when did I marry my wife? How did we meet? What does her dad (my co-sponsor) do for work? Why are we moving to the US? What do I plan to do for work there? Where do we plan to live on arrival? Our discussion lasted maybe 6-7 minuets and then she said "congratulations, you've been approved".

I had brought relationship and domicile evidence with me but wasn't asked for anything. But I saw another guy getting grilled quite a bit for his interview so it depends on individual circumstances. My case was about as straightforward as they get: Australian by birth, married to my American wife 5 years, already have 2 kids, moving to be with family. The other guy was Pakistani and had an arranged marriage to an American girl he had never met before etc. etc.

Once my interview was done the lady explained the next steps. The next day I got the email re. dispatch of my passport with visa and my entry package. That should arrive today and then I'm all done!

Many thanks to the VJ folks who helped me fill out forms and avoid common mistakes. Happy to answer any questions about my experience.

Awesome and Congrats :)

Australia and New ZealandShipping boxes from Melbourne... What company???

I think the most cost effective shipping is going to be purchasing additional suitcases through the airline.

Purchasing two additional bags will be $175 a piece through Qantas (above and beyond the two which are included in the ticket). This will give an additional 46kg/101lb of items which can be shipped, all at a reasonable price.

There are very few companies which do economic air shipping to the USA. This is mainly because of the air handling/customs/inspection charges which are imposed on freight which arrives/departs the US. The remaining companies will not offer any tracking/assistance/insurance/care whatsoever.

There are a few places which do cheaper shipping if you are willing to ship via sea, but this is a 3 month process and it's usually only 20% cheaper.

Friends/Family are also a great way to get the "Australia Only" goodies cheaply, so if they come you can kill two birds with one stone.  :joy:

I thought Qantas only allowed a maximum of 3 pieces of luggage per passenger? and the first 2 being free.

Australia and New ZealandConfused by email from Sydney Consulate-Anyone else get one of these recently?

Hi All,

Last week we received an email from the Sydney consulate informing us that they had received our approved petition. The email was simply addressed to "Visa Applicant", and provided us with an appointment time. We are bit confused because we thought we needed to complete the DS-160 and mail back some forms (packet 3?) before they'd schedule us for our interview. The email contained a long list of instructions for K1 visa with lists of things to do (medical, background check, paying visa fee) and the DSL-1076 checklist.

The email said not to follow the instructions on the website because they are currently updating their site. Has anyone else received this type of Packet 3/Packet 4 combination email? The email doesn't really specify what to do with all of the documents (e.g., mail back before interview) except that the DSL-1076 checklist should be completed and submitted at the interview...

Thanks for your help!

So there was no attachments to the email with the checklist or further instructions? Just a notification with an interview date?

I haven't heard of this before but i'm keen to find out if others have experienced this!

Hi all,

Not sure what the final verdict on this was. We're currently going through the I-I30 visa process and the police check is next on the list. We're in Queensland and I'm not sure if we do the check with or without prints.

What's the word?

Australia and New ZealandTemporary health insurance for first month after we arrive in US?

Look for 'catastrophic' or 'new immigrant' health insurance plans, which will offer some basic coverage for emergencies. These are probably the best options until you can sign up for an employer provided plan, a marketplace plan or a private plan.

I just received an email from Sydney consulate and they said, yes the email was intended for us, and not to mail anything in before the interview, just bring in the documents. They must be overhauling their process! I guess this saves us some worry and extra work : )

Thanks for posting the update - that's great that it now involves fewer stages and means the interview gets scheduled sooner. I guess I will most likely see you at the Consulate on the 8th :)

Interesting to see they're cutting down on time nowadays. Feels like I must be one of the last few that went through Packet 3. The only slight annoyance I see here is a lot more cases going through to Administrative Processing due to insufficient supporting evidence. I know I'm pretty OCD about making sure EVERYTHING is there. Hope this doesn't make too many people's lives go on hold. On the other hand, much faster if you have everything ready and to their satisfaction. No stressing about sending original documents in the mail. (Something I really didn't want to do.)

Australia and New ZealandAustralian Passport & Name Change process

Ah it's my turn, originally I don't wanna change my surname but now I have to (don't ask why)

- Im an Aus citizen by naturalisation (in 1998)
- then in 2002 I officially changed my first name, so I got a NSW "Change of Name certificate" from RBDM. and later on changed every documents, except my birth certificate of course.
- Me getting married this month (June 2012) and will return to Australia for my wedding in Nov. and stay for 2-4 weeks then back to US for good.
- When I was in Sydney earlier this year, i renewd my NSW drivers licence for 1 year (since i won't be living in Aus)

We will be getting married next Monday in SF city hall. then i will apply for my SSN, AOS, EAD and AP under my new married name. in this county, we will have to buy the 'certified copy of marriage certificate' they don't give the original (e.g. in MA they do).

So after reading this wonderful thread (Thank you Vanessa again~ :oD) i'm thinking...
- this Nov when i go back, when booking ticket, i will use my maiden name. name on passport yes
- i'm not sure if i will change my AUS passport to my new name on this trip, i know it will be free. It originally will expire in Jan 2015, i shouldn't wait til 2014 right? When you do the free change it keeps the same expiration date of your original passport. So if yours is expiring soon anyway, just change the name then (if you don't mind keeping it in your maiden name for a while)
- If i don't change my passport during this Aus visit. I change it later (after 1 year) in US California, is showing the marriage cert enough as proof? No unfortunately. Because you got married in the US you will need to get a name change done with BDM (which you need to pay for) and then you use the name change cert to get it. If you were doing it in the "under a year" you would show the marriage cert to get the passport fee waived
- Thought I will change my AUS bank card and Medicare card during this trip? With the certified marriage cert (CMC)? You can try... but it's unlikely they will let you without an official name change. They wouldn't accept my US marriage cert. I tried VicRoads and ANZ. both said they needed something official like an Aussie marriage cert (but you're married in US so you can't marry "again" here) or an official name change. I needed the name change for the passport anyway so not a big deal.

- So there is absolutely no trouble to go back to US (after Nov) with my maiden name passport and new name AP? No problem. In this case you just show your marriage cert to link the AP to your new name.

- Later on i will do a master degree here in US under new name, and when applying to professional organisation, where i need to show my AUS bachelor degree document in my maiden name, I just need to send a copy of the CMC? When doing my interviews and stuff I showed my quals in my maiden name and never thought about how it looked... can't hurt to take your marriage cert just in case
- what about transfering money from AUS to US, with paypal its not an issue? (Vanessa knows more about this I suppose) Not a problem. I have a US paypal and an AUS paypal and do it that way. Takes about 10 days but the cheaper (and in some cases no) fees are worth it.
- another thing, later on I got green card with new name, when I want to sponsor my dad from China to visit me, i need to show both the NSW change of name cert and the US CMC to prove that he is my dad? Hahaha. Fun stuff. Actually you'd probably have to show your birth cert which lists him as your father, as well as the name change and marriage cert... but you don't actually "sponsor" your dad to get a visitor visa. He applies and is approved or denied on his own merits. The fact he has a daughter here (though he needs to say it) willing to "sponsor" him doesn't matter. You'll see on the application form that there's not anything required from you, it's all him. He need to show strong ties to his home country to be approved. Like a mortgage, car loan, family etc

Sorry I took a while to reply. I'm getting sick and my brain is muddled :S Replies in red above.

If i take her, she will have her US passport plus the ETA thingie ... visitor thingie that australia requires ....

Yep yep like the VWP. She isn't treated as an Aussie. She has stay requirements and all that but I don't know if that's against the rules 'cause technically she's an Aussie, she just hasn't got her passport or all that. Just give the Aussie embassy in the US a call, without giving identifying info, and ask them whether it's okay for her to do that. I know for the US it's not okay and if she was born in Aus she'd need her US passport before travelling to the US

No she has her US Passport only (or will have as soon as i apply for one) ... i havent even started on the citizenship by birth decent for her ... shes only 3 and i figured i had time

You might want to look into the rules. I know for USC children if they are eligible for USC they cannot enter the US on visitor visas etc, they need their passport first (friend of mine got into a little bit of trouble for it). I don't know if the same rule applies for Australia. Your child would be entering as a visitor with visitor restrictions.

I don't know how long you're home for but I would look into applying for your child's citizenship and passport while you're there. It would be a lot quicker.

my aussie passport still has 2 years on it till it expires ... and i have to visit australia for my mother who is really sick ... but im not travelling alone, i will have my 3 year old daughter with me who was borne in the US AND will have her own passport ...

so my question is this ..

i will have my maiden name passport, marriage license, and green card with me, .... do i book the tickets in my maiden name? or my married name .... ?

thankyou in advance.

I'm sorry you're going home for a sad reason and I hope your mum is okay.

Well I was told that your ticket just needs to match "government issued photo-ID" which is a GC but that was in 2010 and I believe things have changed since then 'cause of fraud or whatever. As you are entering with your passport and not changing it while there (I entered with maiden name and changed it to married while there) i would get your ticket in your passport name, and you'll need to take your marriage certificate (not licence) with you and GC and you'll be fine :)

Also, your daughter has her US passport and Australian passport correct?

Australia and New ZealandAustralian Passport & Name Change process

hi there...
I have booked my flight tickets under my maiden name...(in my Australian passport)
However all of my AOS, AP AND EAD is under my married name...
I have given enough time for my AP to be done before flying...
so when I go there/come back...should i just show my marriage cert. to prove my last name change...which will be on the AP?

Showing your marriage cert to link to the AP is great. Will you be changing your passport while you're there? You know it's free if changed within a year of marriage right? Or will you at least be starting the name change process while there? (the official name change in Aus will make getting the passport easier).
