Middle East and North AfricaInterview Casablanca 8/15 refused!!!!
mona_jamie...

That was a great link. Here's an excerpt.

Common Names

Of all of the security clearance delay characteristics, this is both the most surprising and sometimes the least predictable. Every FN goes through a name check clearance (“Visas Donkey”). The name is inputted into the system only with the consonants (not the vowels) in the person’s name. If someone else with the same name and the same or fairly close date of birth appears in the system, there is a “hit” which needs to be resolved in Washington. Through no fault of the FN’s own, other than that he might have a common name in his country, the sometimes long delay may prevent the FN from returning to the United States.

So...the Donkey is the name check .

Middle East and North AfricaLowest price phone card to Morocco cells?

I was always pleased with www.idt.net and their Global Calling Cards (not the 'Penny-Talk). I think the Morocco rates vary from 18 to 26 cents depending on where/what you are calling, but the service is faboo. You really get your money's worth. Not the cheapest of all rates, but I never lost a cent for bad connections, rounding fees, etc.

The IDT Global Calling cards have been my best experience. You purchase it online. We never have issues on our end (just his family's end). It is instanteous for recharging (and you can even set it to automatic). You can also print out a calling history (if you want documentation for the visa interview, etc).

We cheat. We buy the jar of preserved lemons for $3.99 at our local Arab market. There are usually about 10 lemons in there and it lasts us a month or two.

Middle East and North AfricaI gotta say Thanks to you all
I truly hope, regardless of what the outcome of your present situation is, that you, Dee, will find a good counselor. I am saying this from personal experience. I was with the most gigantic @sshole of all-time for four years. The stories I can tell. OMG. When I finally got up the nerve to leave him, it was the hardest thing I ever did. I cried for a day. The next day I immediately called and found a good counselor. I wanted to understand what exactly it was that led me to this crappy, emotionally abusive relationship so I would NEVER repeat it again. I wanted to break the cycle (as my dad was an abuser and my mom just stuck in there too). I want you to break the cycle for the sake of your children as well. I wish you all the best and just know there are a bunch of us here to support you.

Dee,

I am glad you made a decision for yourself and your boys this morning. Sometimes I think the "trying" to make a decision is worse than actually dealing with the situation afterwards.

I wonder sometimes why people revel in making others lives bad. I truly cannot believe this so-called-friend was behaving as she did. She is the one who has to answer to Allah.

Middle East and North AfricaEducation in MENA
Henia,

I am also a high school teacher. I am not from your home state, however. I do know that EVERY state has their standards online (because I was researching quite a few of them at one time).

Is your daughter coming back at some point in the school year? If so, you might want to make sure she stays current with whatever the grade level standards are in your state. With No Child Left Behind, I am sure your state probably has some sort of test they administer to determine grade level progress. You would want to make sure she keeps up with those expectations.

You could start out by emailing her school and asking for further guidance.

Middle East and North AfricaCoverts?
I totally understand. It is something that I have been contemplating as well. I have actually read the Quran with my husband last year during Ramadan. We would then discuss what we read and he would have me share what I was feeling. It was a VERY good introduction for me. I have also recently read...

The Heart of Islam : Enduring Values for Humanity by Seyyed Hossein Nasr

It was written for Westerners to learn more about Islam (I heard about it on Meet the Press of all places on Easter weekend).

The real issue I have is finding a muslim woman in this area to help me understand more. Most of the muslims in this area are Pakistani. I know some of them. They come from a totally different place (mentally and culturally) and I would not feel comfortable at all. I am still working on this one.

It has been my experience, on this board and off, that too many women will just be in denial and want to shoot the messenger rather than believe that they may have been taken for a ride.

Is it the right thing to tell? Hell yeah. Would I want to know? You better believe it. Will everyone want to believe it (even some of those who voted yes here) or even act up on it? No.

Middle East and North AfricaAOS INTERVIEW AROUND THE CORNER
Andrea,

We were so nervous as well. The guy who interviewed us was so serious. He flipped through my husband's case file to make sure EVERYTHING was there. He swore Hicham in and asked the obligatory questions (when did you get married? etc). Then he asked if we brought anything we would like to add. I told him what we brought and he said the tax returns were great along with the proof that both of our names were on the condo title. All in all it took about ten minutes. Afterward, I realized that this was one of the easiest parts of the whole journey. Just breathe deep and go in with your evidence. I am sure you will be fine.

Middle East and North Africacontacting your senator or rep for help, was it helpful ? pros/cons

How helpful it can be depends on the aide who handles immigration issues for the office. You have three reps you can contact - 2 senators and one US representative. If one office does not seem capable of handling it well, try another aide in another office.

This is very true. This is where VJ becomes another great resource. I found some other members from my state who had to contact one of our senators. All were helpful, suggested one senator, and told me how his office deals with these cases and what exactly to do. So...rely on the experience of others!

Middle East and North Africacontacting your senator or rep for help, was it helpful ? pros/cons
We got one of our senators involved when my husband never got any information from the consulate after his petition was forwarded. We waited about four weeks (which at that time was SO abnormal). The senator's office was so helpful!!! The same day they found the response, the consulate finally emailed me AND my SO finally got his packet (amazing what things a pretty influential senator can do).

Middle East and North AfricaMENA men and the great job hunt
My husband started out working at a local grocery store for the first 90 days he was here (thanks to temp EAD). That experience was enough to help his English, help him acculturate some, give him some US work experience, and to give him some confidence. When he finally was able to work again when he got his EAD, I had him go on such sites as Monster.com and submit resumes to positions that were of interest to him. It did not take him long at all to find a position (maybe two weeks at the most).

Middle East and North AfricaLooking for work... Driving me crazy!!!!!!!

Student loans are usually really easy to get and you don't have to pay them back until you've been out of school for 6 months, and you can always request extensions. Also, the rates are tiny, like 2% right now, below prime, and the pay back monthly amounts are low, usually just what you can afford to pay, so this might be just $50/month and the interest is tax deductible. Oh, and they don't approve you based on credit, either. And depending on the time of year, there are Pell Grants, etc. You just fill out the FAFSA (federal student loan app) and you submit it, and you get back a list of what you qualify for. Grants normally you don't pay back. Of all my debt, my student loans are the least of my worries, plus I get a tax deduction on the interest every year. Plus, you aren't just approved for school fees, you can potentially get enough for living expenses, too.

Thanks peezey for stating this. My husband has been going to the local CC for a year now. He takes out minimal student loans to pay for furthering his education. One thing I would like to add...they really need to wait until they have their greencard before going to college. Why? Because it makes the whole financial end much easier. They can actually qualify for grants that way or, in the case of here in FL, can actually be considered as in-state residents because they are married to someone who has lived in the state for 5 years.

Twila

Everyone check out their state/county because in CA you are considered a resident after 6 months, married or not, green card or not.

That's why I made sure to put FL in my post. However, the grant information, etc, is true nationwide. The local community college said it is MUCH MUCH harder to deal with a student who didn't come on a student visa and is not an LPR yet.

The group is ISNA (The Islamic Society of North America). Not every imam in the US goes with their decisions. I know our local masjid does not -- they await news from other masjids around the US as to if the moon was sighted. The ISNA goes based on scientific/mathematical calculations.

Hicham and I were in the local Arab market. I was looking at the halal marshmallows. They wanted $7.99 / bag!

Hicham wanted to know what they were. I told him to wait and see and that I would get some and make him some fudge during Ramadan. He was excited at the idea of chocolate. :)

QUOTE (amira_ordonia @ Sep 10 2007, 05:14 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
If I was living in Jordan, I wouldn't take his last name because its not so common to do so and there is really no emphasis placed on it. However here, I am taking his last name because there is always so much emphasis placed on it daily life.

Also in the US, living with someone and having kids doesn't always mean you are married and I don't want anyone to have that impression of us so I prefer to make it clear that we are married. No offense to anyone but that's just my personal belief for MY life.

We discussed this before we got married. My husband said it was up to me...he wasn't going to influence me. I told him I was going to insist upon changing my name because it is what is traditionally done in the US (and I come from a pretty traditional family-- although I like to break the mold). Also...I couldn't imagine in the future confusion / questions that may arise if I did not have the same last name as our potential children.

Middle East and North AfricaWhat is your personal feeling why AP is taking so long in many cases?
I remember a while back someone calling Casa after their SO's interview when it was said their petition was being returned to the States. The CO in Casa told this person that it all boiled down to a funding issue. I truly believe (and this is speculation on my part) that Casa would behave just like Egypt when it comes to cases they suspect (months of AR, home visits, etc) if they had the funds (manpower) to do so. Since they don't, they feel they can best serve the petitioner and get their point across by returning numerous petitions.

Like Sarah, I don't feel the CO's are being unfair. I think they are trying to serve their employers (the US citizens) in the best way they can. Do I think they are inept? YES. I work for my local county and the red tape and inability of people drives me crazy.

I rarely post here anymore because a lot of the opinions I see expressed on this board are nothing short of absolutely ridiculous. However, I really felt the need to comment on this one.

Direct quote from another thread:

"You had it easy getting **** here and most of the women are struggling to get their husbands here. You truly have no advice to offer because you haven't been through anything. You haven't struggled to get **** here."

We all know that immigration is a pain in the @ss and no walk in the park -- even if your SO is from a Western country. This line of conversation that has gone on repeatedly is just plain absurd! If someone managed to get through a difficult consulate quickly, then they have MUCH to offer -- and I think much of it is common sense.

I found out that my fiancé had another woman as his fiancé at same time as me. Apparently he used or shall i say used myself for $$, relationship and gifts as well as using her for same. This is a very hard thing for me to do but feel she needs to know as i do. i was with him for over 2 years and i had no clue until recently what he is capable of. I caution ALL ladies to visit many times as you can to really know what you are facing. Listen to your friends i should have listened closer but i did listen before it was tooo late. This man can become abusive as i came to find out my last trip to Marco. Please be careful. He hurt my kids and my self. He has lied and used. I really loved him despite the craziness of our ages (which i found out a yr later he lied about) for he never acted his age at all he acted a lot older than my self but i will NEVER do that again. Much valued and learned experience. I could HATE him for having me to love him and his family but i do not. I have tooo much love in my heart to have my hatred for him tear me up. I know now he wanted easy entry into the USA and that is all, no matter the consequences. Be careful means do not file for your guy till you have visited him a few times first and ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR instincts. If you know the woman in this pic on my page, plz let her know. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and it is my opinion that my timeline would not be helpful to anyone. Those who believe that your timeline is helpful to others, I'm happy for you. Personally, I rarely look at anyone else's because I haven't found individual timelines to be relevent to my case. It seems, also, that people get real negative about them if theirs doesn't compare favorably to another. Posting a timeline is not the price of admission, and if some folks are suspicious of or prejudiced against members who don't post theirs, well, there are plenty of other helpful folks who don't care if you have one or not. I'm one of them.

You are right. Posting a timeline is not the price of admission. By doing so, however, you help to keep the stats on the board for a given consulate more accurate.

Maybe your case is not like others. That is fine. However, if some part takes forever or is arduous, it may help others to see when they visit here that not everything is walk in the park.

I look at providing our timeline as the LEAST I can do to help the board that has provided me with so much information.

Finally, who cares if people get negative when they compare their timeline to yours. Some on this board right now get negative saying we got the visa quickly. I look at that as their fault. If I saw someone's timeline was so quick, I would want to get in contact with them and find out what was it they did or what made their situation so unique to get through more quickly than others.

Middle East and North AfricaMonday- New Years Eve!!!
We are inviting the neighbors up for a mini-party tonight. I am making chicken pastilla and some gazelle horns. The neighbors are making enchiladas and salsa. We are just going to hang out and enjoy the coming new year together.

Middle East and North AfricaDoes applying for the visa lottery count against you?
My husband had applied for a student visa a few years prior to us filing for the K-1. It did not affect him getting it.

Actually, I have been waivering between Obama and Edwards. I was happy with both of their showings. I need to read more on their stances on certain issues before I make my final decision. It won't matter much, however, as the Democratic National Party has decided to not allow any delegates from Florida as the state moved its primary up and they were not pleased.
