Just had to share a funny story. I got my interview date for Dec 4th - Woo hoo- and with the medical coming up I thought i'd try to get my photos taken. I work in New Kingston and have really long days so I thought I go around to the Embassy (yes, the US embassy) and have one of those street-side photogs take my pics.

There was this big belly dread with one of those old time cameras hanging around his neck. Apparently he isn't a photog but the most obvious attention-grabber for the real guys who operate a wooden stall studio further down the sidewalk. I was led to them by Dreadie, after negotiating a price for 6 pics with him. He held up a white sheet behind me while one of the others position my head with not so clean hands and took my mug shot with a digital camera.

They are very enterprising, that lot, they have a printer - an honest-to-goodnes HP printer hooked up to some kind of fancy looking car battery. Unfortunately, the battery needed charging. Junior unplugs the printer and sprints off down Oxford Road with it and disappears for a good 15 minutes with Dreadie cursing and swearing the whole time about how Junior is spoiling his business. Another set of dreads in the bun and cheese stall further up wind are smoking weed and killing me with second hand smoke. All the time I'm thinking"Yep, I've failed my medical after this".

Finally Junior sprints back with the printer and runs off my pictures. I look like ####### - I know that. But there is this big red spot right beside my head in all six of them. Apparently there's a big stain on the sheet that was used as a backdrop. I mean, after all the money they extort from those poor VJ'ers who turn up for interviews without pics, you'd think they could go to Pablos and buy piece-a white claat?

Now after all that sprinting and waiting and loss of business, neither Dreadie nor Junior want to take my pics over again - and they have already pocketed my $1000.00. They argue that my face is clear in the pic, what does it matter if there's a red blotch beside it? I had to dig deep down and find the Buttu in me to match their fierceness and hold my ground. I'm quite a soft-spoken lady and not very believeable when I try to "ack ghetto on people's a$$es " as my girlfriend from Jersey would recommend. Somehow though, I got through to them.

I'm happy to say, I now have a perfect set in my purse and 5 days to detox for my medical.

Thanks for reading! One love!

If I was the Jamaican fiance and you came to me with a proposal like this............you will get a rather rude crash course in Jamaican patois and it would not sound good.

Why are we able to find humour in the most serious of circumstances? I love this thread.

Can anybody give me a few pointers on how to steam fish

Season it up 'good good'. Make sure you use some pimento seeds (allspice), escallion and scotch bonnet pepper if you can find it. Add some okra, carrots and other veggies if you like that stuff. Place it all in a pan with butter on a very low heat and a 'tups' of water. Leave it there covered until it looks and smells cooked.

Mail me some when it's done!

Call your local police station and ask them. They're the ones who are going to give you the ticket if it's NOT accepted! So they should know. I would think you could drive on your Jamaican license for a while. (Do NOT call 911! Call the non-emergency number ;) )

Called the local police for the heck of it (and because I really need something to do) and I quote"

"Ma'am, that's a really weird question that no one here can answer for you. Please call the DMV."

What did I tell you? I may as well have come from Mars.

Ok Guys..

After getting some new inspiration from all of you (thanks my VJ sisters) I called another branch in Montpelier and told the underling who answered the phone that I needed to speak to a supervisor.

She acknowledged that their website is correct and that all I needed was my I-797 (NOA2), passport, marriage certificate and a piece of mail to show my current address. With that I can get a permit and also a non-drivers photo ID in my new married name. Unfortunately, I can only drive on a Jamaican license for 60 days and I have been here for over 3 months. I will be going back to my own DMV and I will be quoting this supervisors name and I will not be leaving the building until I get some results - or until security removes me bodily.

Come to think of it..this process is not unlike trying to get something done in Jamaica.

Do you have a license from Jamaica? I am not sure if it varies from state to state but there are time limits, usually 6 to 12 month that you can legally drive on it.

It must be that no one in their right mind comes to Vermont (except me, go figure). It always appears to me that the person I am in front of has never seen a foreigner in all their lives and has no idea what to do with my situation. I may as well have landed from Mars. No one seems to know if I can drive on a foreign license here.
JayandmarsFemaleJamaica2007-04-04 08:51:00

Why would you tell them you are visiting? They tried to do that to my husband saying he needed an international drivers permit. We went back to the registry, got into the learners permit area and it was a bit difficult there because of the 4 forms of ID but we gave her his birth certificate, SS card, passport and they allowed a copy of his AOS NOA1 as something as proof of address. Be persistant....

I have been there twice before. Despite the contradicting info on their website, they now claim that they cannot issue me a VT license until I have proof that I am a legal resident. NOA2 notwithstanding. They claim that a new law has been passed in VT to that effect. So I am now technically a visitor and going that route. I just need to be able to drive..however that comes about.

Good morning,

Congrats to Ms Nyseness! Good luck to everyone else.

I called the DMV this morning and asked for info on an international driver's license...explaining that I have a Jamaican on and am here 'visiting' the US. They told me to call AAA. The AAA rep. says that they only issue those to US citizens who want to visit a foreign country. So I call back the DMV who says that they have no clue how to help me. Someone suggested calling a jamaican consulate here in the US. Wish me luck.

On a happier note...I got 2 touches! 1 yesterday and one this morning! They can feel me up all they want. Woo Hoo!

SAME HERE!

OK...here's a little tip from a born Jamaican. ALWAYS ask what's in the soup or, if you've already taken a few sips, DON'T ask what's in the soup. I grew up in the city (Kingston) and took my first trip to the 'country ' when I was about 9 years old. The family welcomed us with open arms and a kerosene pan (ask your spouses about this) on an open wood fire in the front yard bubbling with soup. I have to admit it smelled delicious...and I was presented with a steaming hot bowl. I had to take my time and skim from the top because it was so hot. When I finally got down to the meat of the matter...there was a completely intact jawbone staring back at me..complete with molars, premolars and inscisors embedded in the blackest gums I had ever seen. I think the goat was suffering from gingivitis. I dropped the entire bowl and all but puked.

The other usual culprits for turning any non-jamaican off our cuisine are:

Chicken foot soup...also curried chicken foot

Cow foot..sometimes the skin of the cow (not the hide) is added to this dish.

Cow cod soup (which is the ####### and ####### and, incidentally, come from the bull - not the cow)

My girlfriend's mom used to deep fry chicken heads for her ..beaks, eyes and all. I kid you not.

Tripe..as in intestines..with broad beans.

Cow head...as in the brains...with broad beans

Light...which is the heart of the cow

Cow tongue...I hear it is delicious when smoked

The USA has a nasty habit of deporting turkey necks to our shores...so we cook those up with broad beans too.

Some people buy fish heads only because the rest of the fish can be too expensive for their meagre budgets.

One thing I must say about my people...no matter what it is...they season up their meats and marinate them to perfection and when cooked and served with some good rice and peas or yam, green bananas and cornmeal dumpling... if you close your eyes and forget where the meat came from...you are in for a culinary masterpiece.

My 3 cents!

Mars.

Can't you guys get Jamaican food where you are? We have only one restaurant (that I know of) that cooks any decent Jamaican food. But, we have 2 international grocery stores and our local farmer's market where we buy everything we need. Andre is the cook in our family and cooks Jamaican dishes nearly every single night. We have saltfish, oxtail, goat, fish, mackrel, ackee (thank God that is back in the stores even if it is big $$$$), callaloo, yam, plantain, coconuts, breadfruit, etc. The only real issues we've had are that he doesn't like our pork and beans.

I have to search long and hard to find another black person let alone a Jamaican. No, no Jamaican stores or restaurants in sight. My hubby found some frozen beef patties on one of his business trips that weren't too bad. He still can't get over the packets of Grace "#######" coup. He took them to work to show his friends. They had a good laugh and I even made some chicken soup for them. I really miss ackee and callaloo and breadfruit....and fried fish and festival on hellshire beach. Sigh!

I have to agree with the not letting babies sleep in the bed with you. While it is done frequently and with no consequences, I wouldn't risk it. The possibility you will roll on them is always there. And, every toss and turn you make could potentially wake up the baby. Same goes for the baby tossing and turning. And, the issue that they could just roll right off the bed. Think of a baby learning to roll over or crawl.

You two are going to have gorgeous babies. Awesome picture!

Hi...one of the "Lurkers" here.

I am the Jamaican wife and I have been in the the US for 3 months now. A lot of you women are not going to like what I am about to post but like everyone else, I am being honest about my feelings.

I had a job in Jamaica that barely paid all my expenses with a child to support. I worked extra jobs at night (whenever work was available) and depended on neighbours to watch her while I was gone because I could not afford child care. My ex - her father - moved to the US and remarried and made no effort to support her. He wasn't much of a father when we were together either. He had no real sense of responsibility or commitment and thought that he could/should have anything he wanted, whether fancy cars or women.

I made a decision along the way after going through my own struggles and seeing my other girlfriends go through all the issues that some of you are mentioning now - the irresponsibility, the lying, the infidelity, the abuse etc., that I would NEVER ever find myself in a relationship with a worthless, good-for-nothing, no-sense-of-values Jamaican man again. (this is where you can all cuss me now).

I am now here in the US and going through the adjustment period. I am at home most times because I am still waiting for my EAD. Having known what it was like to have to choose between the electricity bill or food for my daughter, I am VERY APPRECIATIVE of the new life that Jay has offered me and would NEVER abuse his generosity. He treats me like the most important thing in his life and I try to make sure he feels the same way. I chose only the simplest of things for our very modest wedding - to cut down on the expenses and I refuse to put him through any unnecessary spending. When I get a job, I will feel at liberty to get any extras that I may want so I must be the rare JAMAICAN who understands that money doesnt grow on trees.

I feel for all those who are going through rough adjustment periods with their partners...just remember that there are a few of us who have a conscience and respect the fact that our partners have to get up and go out in the cold everyday to support us.

My 2 cents!

Mars.

Hi,

When I received my packet in November I was confused about that fee too. I called the embassy and was told it was an error (I applied for a K-1 visa) and that I should only pay the US$100.00 fee at Paymaster. I don't know about the I-864...I used a different one for my interview in December. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

Hello to all,

I have a few questions... I will spend some time trying to research the answers myself, but I could use a little help from you - the veterans.

First of all..Am I the only female, Jamaican beneficiary who uses this forum? It seems that way.

Here are my questions:

1) Where do I find my 'A' number?

2) Is there anyone here who sent their AOS, EAD and AP at the same time to the Chicago lockbox? If so, how was the EAD handled from there? Did you then have to go to your local USCIS office to do follow-ups?

3) Question 16 on the I-765 asks for an Eligibility Category. Since I am sending the EAD in with the AOS at the same time...is my category then (a) (6) ... If make an mistake here, will the application be rejected?

4) Will I be better off waiting until I get a receipt notice from my AOS application and then applying for the EAD at the local office here in Vermont under category © (9)?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

M.

P.S. Re Partners....I usually avoid them unless I am getting a very early draw. There's always some fool who tries to take the money and run and I don't want to have to hurt someone  for my hard-earned money. That's my 2 cents.

Yup, you sure do. Depending on the timelines for where you are filing you might not need to file for the EAD -- if the interviews for the AOS are moving quickly. It could save you some money -- but -- if the interviews get pushed back for any reason you won't have a work permit.
