WOW! Who quoted you that price???

I go to Banjul from Dakar ALLLLLLLL the time.

I have NEVER paid that much.

You must be getting "taxi quotes".

Just get to the bust stop in the morning. It leaves at about 6-7am. (i'll get the rate in a few)

It goes all the way to banjul.

I have a Delta pass to go and as soon as I get up $406 (my ticket cost), I will be going also. If I get it before you go, I'll travel with you and show you the way. (broke from this whole immigration process & calling hubby lol).

When are you going?

Thanks Leedah, I am leaving 12/16. I am going to PM you. heart.gif

So it turns out that a round trip ticket from Dakar to Gambia is 125,000CFA! YIKES! For two of us that's a 3rd of my budget for the trip. mad.gif

Does anybody know if the road from Dakar to Banjul is in good shape, or is it a hellish treck? Help!

Thanks Omoba! I am leaving 3 weeks from tomorrow and can't wait to get out of here. I'm really crabby with our gov't now and could use a vacation. We are praying we'll be able to come home together. I can't take much more of this (and neither can my wallet).

Leedah I'm so sad! Janice quoted me a price of £460 for 3 weeks and that converts to almost $700! Way out of my budget. Wah! She also did not have a double bed room available and, since this will for all intents and purposes be our honeymoon, twin beds for that price just won't cut it. crying.gif

If you have any other suggestions I am all ears.

Hugs...

Here is a loooooong read about security checks, sorry off topic but thought you may
like to know this.
In a nut shell ( page 11 ) checks back logged longer than 6 month are to be completed by April 2009, someone else said by February 2009.
Thought about you when I read that and hope you will be done with checks sooner than later. smile.gif

Thanks Omoba! I don't mind OT. smile.gif I'm really excited about this trip.

I wonder about this article. I only read page 11, and it talks about USCIS/FBI name checks, which are actually AOS name checks. We have an immigration attorney in our dance community and she's told me that the AOS name checks and visa security clearance processes are different. I could be wrong, and I would love to be wrong, and would love for our checks to be completed in April. It would at least give us a light and the end of the tunnel. We've been waiting almost a year since I filed the original petition, and for a K1 visa that is just ridiculous!

Insh-Allah.... we really want to come home together.

Hello Yardies,

I just wanted to once again thank every single person who had something to contribute (directly or indirectly) to assist Jay and myself through this process. We started in August and after lurking for a week or so I joined VJ.com. The information and tips I found here have provided immeasurable help and I don't think we could have done it all so smoothly without you guys. We got police records from 3 countries; I got immunized from scratch; and we had our interview and visa within 4 short months! No RFE's or hitches of any kind. I panicked a few times but there was always someone with good advice to help calm my stressed out nerves.

From the bottom of my heart, thanks.

Unfortunately, I think that this forum has outlived it's phase of positiveness and helpfulness (as far as I am concerned) and is now doing more harm than good. While I won't be coming back, I will definitely update my timeline as applicable so as to help those who follow after us.

Congrats to those getting married, getting approvals and getting pregnant! To those going through difficult times - hang in there. A wise lady used to tell me while cooking our dinner on a kerosene stove in our humble little kitchen back in Jamaica "No worry me child. Only God's salvation lasts forever".

One love.

Good morning, everyone. So the consensus seems to be that all of the shipping companies are reliable. That's good, because he didn't get the DS230 that I mailed USPS. I have found that USPS is not that reliable on that end. I sent something priority once, it was supposed to get there in about a week, it took more like three.

Good morning, waynegeraldine and welcome.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe that they can only deliver the package if the contents are all documents. Once you include non documents, your recipient may have to go claim it from Customs themselves.

Thank GOD that Craig loves ALL the food here. He's NOT picky....if he was, cheeeez to add onto all of the other stuff we've been through !!!!

Damien loves all food here too...not picky at all.

I've tried to be open minded about the food. I even tasted a piece of deer meat. Yuck! But to be honest, I am worried about being in the USA and changing from my relatively healthy diet of fish, chicken and greens to all the cholesterol-laden foods and becoming over-weight and more prone to things like heart disease.

I'm sorry, but a big old slab of medium rare, blood-oozing steak on my plate with eggs for breakfast on a sunday morning is a bit too much. Jay's feelings were hurt but in the end he understood. I miss my callaloo and saltfish with plantain (and or porridge) on a sunday morning.

Does anyone here like (or know) who Gyptian is? I am listening to his song "Beautiful Lady." I know this song has been out for a while, but everytime I hear it, it makes me feel like I am at home (JA, that is.)

"She said oooohhh, and aaaahhhh, she never felt so right. I said yeeesss , oh baby, breathe on me tonight...." Just lovely.

He debuted (I think) with his big hit "Serious Times" which is a tuff song about the crime and socioeconomic situation in Kingston. He has a very interesting voice.

On a side note, what a pain it is to call USCIS? Even when you get a live person, they are so regimented that you still feel like you are talking to a machine. Damn!

So what's new?

Bonjour Juleali

I see that you filed for K1 so you will be getting married here. I suggest you and your fiance become involved in a Haitian church and the Houngan/Priest will certainly incorporate the tradition into your ceremony. What city are you in?

Yeah, we want to get married here in the states. I live about half way between Montreal and Boston, in VT. I lived in Boston for quite a while (8yrs) and there is a wonderful Haitian community there. If we don't settle in Boston after we get married, we'll defiantly be spending a lot of time there. Thanks for your response.

Bonsoir that is fabulous, you will definitely be in good hands within the Haitian community, they will be extremely resourceful. Aaah Jacmel, now you are making me homesick yes.gif I haven't looked at your timeline yet but do you have long left in your journey.

We've pretty much just begun. We sent in our K-1 application in November and have yet to hear anything about our NOA 2...I hope it will be very soon. Jacmel is the best. I spent almost two years living there and miss every minute away. I went back in February for a week to see my fiance and will be back this summer. Hopefully he'll have his interview while I'm there and will come back with me! Have you been recently?

Bonjour

Good luck on your journey I am sure that you will hear a response soon! I love Haiti but I have a pretty high profile family there and I;m sure you remember when the kidnappings were going and was barred from entering the country for my safety. I couldn't' even go to my grandfathers funeral 2 years ago! Although the situation has calmed down now I haven't traveled back to visit because I am now married and he is in Jamaica so I have concentrated on him and my family there. I wish to travel back to Haiti with my Husband so he can meet that side of the family but have no idea when that will be. I do miss home very much but I rather be safe then sorry you feel me!

So how was it when you went , still hot as can be I imagine. I never forget the hot sun I have been the darkest I have ever been in my life during my stays in Mariani LOL

Bonswa Phillyfashionista,
It is definitely better to be safe than sorry with things being so unpredictable/unstable there. But, you know what they say about the soil touching your feet, you'll always be back. It was hot while I was there, but anything is hot compared to VT in February! I hope things move quickly for you and your Husband, and that one day soon you will be able to visit your family in Haiti once more. Thanks for all of your help and advice, it's been very helpful.

I cannot add anything specific in terms of Haitian traditions. But it is great that you already know of a Haitiian Community in the area. That could be a big help.

I know that in our expereince my husband couldn't really think of "marriage traditions" that were specific to his country. So instead, we took the route of integrating more cultural pieces to make his friends/family/culture present. For example we had a bilingual/bicultural mass (including typical music from his home church, etc) and his family wrote a letter that was read during the mass (no one was able to make it for the ceremony because they were denied tourist visas...grr). Then, at the reception we invited a Chilean dance group to come to present the traditional dances from the regions (so that family and friends who had never gone to Chile could feel a bit more of the culture)...and we also got up to dance the traditional cueca. We also had some typical chilean food prepared, pictures and stories from Chile as part of our decorations, US and Chilean flags, etc.

Good luck

Thanks for the inspiration! You've given me some great ideas.

Len is right. If you are filing for a K-1 he cannot be married to receive the K-1. If he gets married then the K-1 becomes null and void and you would have to start the visa process all over again from the beginning with a spousal visa (CR-1). Having some sort of an engagement party or reception on the date - as long as there is no ceremony that can be interpreted by USCIS as a wedding - is possible but still very risky. You cannot have any type of officiant to swear the words - and I actually doubt you would be able to find an officiant who is willing to give a 'non-legal' wedding ceremony. Your best options are either to hope you can get an interview soon - or consider putting off the date of the 'wedding'. Good luck.

Our officiant has actually done so before and doesn't have a problem doing that if we need her to...but we're only using that as a worst case scenario option.

In general, trips to the US are no big deal, even if you are denied entry. But when you go between packet 3 and the interview, you may force them to re-review your travel history and thusly delay your visa.

I can understand how you might be stuck on your wedding date of October 10th (I'm certainly stuck to mine!!). As I was getting ready to plan our wedding, I kept saying, "Well, if we don't have the visa by then, he's coming over here for the party, so THERE!!" I understand a little more about the process, so your plan of coming over for the ceremonial bit would be a case of last resort...If you feel uncertain and panicky, have you considered selecting a different day? Can you afford to eat the cost of a reschedule?

8 weeks is still quite a while. If you stay on top of things, you may still make it. Is there anything you can do to minimize any hold-ups? Medical complete? All documents in hand, etc?

Hope things work out.

I can't afford to reschedule, no. The only thing working in my favor is that I haven't sent invites out yet, but everything else has had deposits put down, etc. Ugh.

So, am I right in reading from your reply that you think he WOULD be allowed to enter the US even if he was between packet 3 and interview? We're totally find with just doing the ceremony but not signing anything official until the visa actually is granted, but it does me no good to plan on that if he gets turned around oncehe gets to Boston...lol

He hasn't had his medical done yet because he wanted to try and schedule it the same day or a day before the interview so as to only have to make one trip down to London and back. Everything else is ready to go, though. He has a copy of all the stuff I've ever sent the USCIS, he's got his police certificate (in duplicate), and he's got extra copies of all the forms we filled out from the packet 3 letter (even though he sent copies of them all in with the checklist).

Do you think the fact that we sent another whole packet 3 response 6 weeks after we sent the first one might have mucked things up somehow? It wasn't maybe 3 days after the embassy rec'd the 2nd packet 3 response from us that we were suddenly showing up in their system when I called.

I also would not plan on entering and "marrying" on the VWP. London can be pretty accomodating in terms of rescheduling interviews so don't worry about that until you actually have a date.

Try calling DOS (202)663-1225, press 1 then 0

Not sure how much they'll be able to tell you but they can let you know if you've been qualified for an interview or if you're missing any paperwork or if they've for some reason invented some new kind of AP to put you on even before the interview (doubtful of course).

I call the DOS number about once a week. I actually called today before I called the $16 number, and they are closed today for some reason. They never tell me anything except "your packet 3 was received into the system on July 14th and that no interview has been scheduled, and to call back in a week. It's super frustrating.

Alright, so I just got off the phone with the Embassy phone service...the one that charges you $16 just to give you an email access code...and I was told that there's something holding up the scheduling of Mark's interview, but I have to email to find out what. I've sent the email, but I've heard they don't reply too swiftly. Our wedding is planned for 8 weeks from now, and I'm panicking. Worst case scenario, if his interview is scheduled after Oct 10th (our wedding date), would he still be able to enter the country on a visitor's visa before then, be here for the wedding (though not sign the license), and then go back to the UK for his interview? Or will that not work? I'm so sick to my stomach over this. Everything went so well right along this whole process until now, and I'm so afraid that all this planning I've done and money we've spent is going to go down the tubes!

Any help anyone could suggest would be most appreciated...
