I received this email from the lawyer's office. I need to know what you think about the bank officer part (seems this is standard response for all countries (at least that's what we needed for US government mortgages...copies of bank statements no bank officer involvement necessary). What have you all done?

"Please also begin to compile the following documents, which will be submitted with your Affidavit of Support. A draft of your Affidavit of Support will be forthcoming.
A. Statement from an officer of the bank or other financial institutions where you have deposits, identifying the following details regarding your account:
1. Date account opened;
2. Total amount deposited for the past year;
3. Present balance.
B. Statement of your employer on business stationery revealing:
1. Date and nature of employment;
2. Salary paid;
3. Whether the position is temporary or permanent.
C. If self-employed:
1. Copy of last income tax return filed; or
2. Report of commercial rating concern.
D. List containing serial numbers and denominations of bonds, stocks, and certificates of deposit, name of record owner(s), and value(s).
You should receive a notice from the National Visa Center notifying you that your petition will be sent to the US Embassy Bangkok. The notice should also include a case number starting with ?BNK.? Please be looking for this notice and send me a copy via e-mail upon your receipt. Thank you.

I switched to Schwab (still have BOA) because 2 people here suggested it for the no atm fees in BKK and no nickel and diming...and they give the real exchange rate (BOA gets you coming and going, skewing the forex rate, as well). Just to change money here, it costs $45-$55 to change $1000....insanity! I've been using Schwab and taken the money access worries away (thanks for that valuable suggestion; now she uses one card, I have one) biggrin.gif

CONGRATS HYENA and welcome to the NOA2 club! You deserve some relief but now you get to deal with "The Man".

LOL! I'm really worried about "da man"
If I can "figure him out" then it may be easier but I have a feeling his personality is one of conflict....not impressed until a conflict is won (I need to look into that more) or the undying need to be right regardless of a perfect file. WOuld groveling or bowing help? Given 2 equal cases, they're certainly not handled equally. I'll definitely tell her to dress nice but try to look ugly (since that assistant will more likely than not 1. be prejudice against Isaan, 2. Be catty as hell.
You'll have to share what THE MAN does and how it all works. She's worried about him, too but I told her out file is soooo thick with pics, phone logs, emails, money, gifts, receips, boarding passes....I don't see how they could deny but they more likely than not will play with us (seem to get a kick out of it).

You'll be fine. You are K-1. They only seem to give married people a hard time.

that's good and bad to know (bad for the married folks)..maybe cause they're more of a slam dunk and his powers are less? who knows?
The guy I flew back with had similar stories I saw on the forum and he just got back from da man denying again. For him it's been 5 years and had 2 kids during his process(s) and he was saying his relationship isn't legit, told him to come back in a few months but he's in the military, had to go )da man was meeting with him directly). He was kind of a hothead, though so I'm not privy to what really happened.
Maybe I vent or flood worries out on paper but these are just thrown out thoughts late after a few--There's definitely a time and place to be appropriate and give the guy the respect he deserves and he will get.

You're putting MONEY in your file?? I sincerely hope you're not trying to bribe the CO? That will 100% get you denied, and banned for life!

thanks for your responses (I mean proof of support, gifts...not real gifts and real money)! That was good but I guess you never know!

I guess I can only do what I can do, try not to sweat it as Aaron says and put one foot in front of the other. I agree, many Bangkokians are very kind, pleasent and respectful regardless of who you are...it was just a reckless assumption why the assistant would repeatedly state items are not in files when some have large labeled tabs like "Taxes 2008, 2007" etc and she says "no have".

but now that you talk of bribes.....good idea! (LOL) not!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that when President Obama ready your inquiry, he got right on it! rofl.gif

Well, you know, .... that's actually why we had that low fly-by with the Air Force One plane over lower Manhattan yesterday.... Obama was pre-occupied dealing with I-129F petitions stuck at USCIS and wasn't paying attention to the naughty-naughty Air Force tongue.gif

That flyover was asinine; so they can sell key chains? I'm glad he made his news conference tonight tongue_ss.gif
In reading back posts, someone suggested squeaky wheel seems to get cases done looking thru the numbers and who does/who doesn't (I don't know--I only know I was frustrated with nothing happening).
I'm just happy I finally have the NOA2; that's something at least.

In Maryland, one needs to show two primary sources of ID. One can be a Passport and the other can be:
QUOTE
Out-of-Country driver?s license, with an international driver?s license,
or a translation into English, if required

It seems as though they want both.
There are other acceptable primary sources, such as a marriage certificate, but we'll use that for proof of MD residence, and sources can't be used twice.

I can say all this ended up to a good thing! She started taking classes yesterday (550 baht)! It's for 20 hours. She's learning manual transmission (I told her not to bother since we wouldn't use manual)...but on the other side of the coin, it gives her something to accomplish and be proud of. She said her brain needs to wake up (last school was 5th grade since she had to work to support her family when her dad left) so her learning opportunities have been slim and I cannot say enough- the tone of her voice, she actually sounds happy for the first time in a long time (she's got a sad life story and somehow believes her life was destined not to be "lucky"). Once she gets that, I'll have her get the international DL (whether needed or not, better to err on the side of getting..and keep her busy).

She's doing work for our business over there but that's a huge headache. This type of learning (aside from the ez cart go-carts we drove when I was there) seems like it would be fun for her. I'm so proud of her! I told her she could drive me everywhere once she gets here and she seemed quite happy. THis whole journey will be life changing and things are starting to happen in her life; something i've been wanting for so long. It's one thing to have a fiancee "husband" but have to stay homein Thailand and not much changes in her life after I go; except for a/c, learning and using computer and financial stability (reduces fear of not having enough) for her and her family, I imagine this is a real and tangible enough step for her to be smiling for some time (at least it's a good time consuming thing that's good for her while we try not to go nuts awaiting our NOA2!

I couldn't be happier for her! I'd LOVE to see her jerking around in a stick shift the first time. I asked her if her instructor needed to go to the hospital from whiplash yet! LOL! Life is just getting exciting..real things are happening!

My fiancée drives a big ole pickup truck. However, she's so short she needs to sit on a pillow to see above the steering wheel. The biggest adjustment for me was shifting gears with my left hand.

I can picture that! LOL! I love hearing the stories of what happens once they get here. I'd love to be a fly on the wall to see a lot of these transitions. Some of the stories are hilarious and their humor is so original. I look forward to experiencing some of these unique moments, too (If I can at least get a NOA2) Uggh!

Yes. Earlier discussions talked about difficulty switching sides (left to right) but I think your method and reading US websites this may be easier. Thanks!

It has been very difficult for Nam to remember what side of the road she is suppose to drive on. She had 10 hours of lessons in Bangkok, and grew up riding motorbikes in her hometown. I have a feeling if they don't have solid years of actual driving experience count on them not going out by themselves for quite some time.

I'd agree with that completely. Several months total abroad and it's still a reaction training thing to tell myself LEFT side...if I need to swerve, do it left not right. She hasn't ridden cycles much in the past 10 years so her transition should be easier (I did all my driving up north)...just trying to figure out the most efficient way to get her on the road without our laws backfiring ie: Apparently the motor vehicle offices aren't accepting USCIS documentation as "permanent" or "legally in the US" enough to issue a license and I learned a temp green card expires so the short duration of a provisional license cannot be renewed...although the paperwork shows it, a work permit or an actual green card seems all they'll accept from what I read. I'm glad I' learning this now. This info is all useful...this website is invaluable!

In order for foreigners to get a driver's license in Maryland they need:

1) DL from home country (Thai licenses have English on them, so no need to translate)
2) International DL
3) Take the knowledge test
4) Take the road test
5) sit through a 3 hour drug and alcohol awareness class and pass the test
6) take an eye exam

I am not certain what additional criteria would be necessary if she didn't already have a Thai DL since she'll have to take the tests regardless.

I had my fiancée get the international DL, so she can legally drive from the day she arrives.

I've been reading through VJ about drivers licenses and it appears most are getting hassled until they get their green card (if it's a temp gc, they can't renew once they're in between temp/perm gc, it appears they're outta luck.

Would you suggest an international DL (since it will be many months till she gets here, obviously at this rate)?

I was reluctant at first since it would be difficult to be a new driver then switch sides...but then again, I do OK in Thailand after some time. What does the peanut gallery think?

I do need to get her driving as soon as possible here...just trying to figure whether or not to have her take driving school there, then get intl DL there so she can drive here. My state is MD.

Thanks!

after NVC sends the package to China, your package is probably stored somewhere in a warehouse, because Guangzhou Consulate is not ready for you, after NVC sends it, expect another 2-3 months wait, if your lucky sooner, but usually 2-3 months, check out my timeline.

ok, i understand the waiting period, i am referring more specifically to some sort of confirmation that they have actually received it though. my USCIS period was over 5 months but I got my confirmations right on time and pretty much immediately.

ok, this is what you do

Call the National Visa Center to make sure that it actually left the US for China

then after you get that confirmation, call the department of state (DOS) to check the status, DOS gets the status from Guangzhou Consulate, so it's current information.

Hi

I also looked through FAQs, pinned posts and respective websites, and I do not have correct phone numbers. Well, the NVC maybe, just to confirm 603-334-0700 is this correct ?
What about the number for DOS to the appropriate department ? Could anyone post it please ?

Thanks

Hey there

for both NVC and DOS make sure you speak to a live person

This is DOS# 202-663-1225 and the number you have for NVC is correct.

All right, so I called the USCIS about the NOA2 today. Their records didn't show the NOA2 ever being sent out. I was told that an agent would look at my file and that I should get the NOA2 by June 2 or so (maybe quicker she said). Unlike other people, there is no charge (I'm guessing this is because according to their records it wasn't even sent out a first time).

My situation seems different than others, in that it sounds like the USCIS doesn't even show my petition being approved (still says pending online, etc). So hopefully when they review my file all goes well and I will get the NOA2 and there wasn't some type of other mix-up.

I keep thinking maybe it really wasn't approved yet (considering it's been so quick), but considering my fiancee has already received the packet, hopefully that isn't the case.

call NVC and check... because that is where your petition would go after USCIS...

Ask if you can fly back for the service and get a recertified visa to come to your fiance here and get married.

don't think it's that easy.... K-1 objective is to get married in the US..... you have to complete the objective....

Never said it was easy but others here have done it. Also, others have gotten married and wanted to go back for an emergency and failed to get it approved.

Idea is to not be already married when you ask.

logically speaking, it's better to marry, file Adjustment of status with AP and EAD, while these are PENDING, then you can ask them to expedite the AP, because they already have you in the system.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresLegal Responsibility of Sponsor/CO-SPonsor
it's tough to find a co-sponsor. i was in your shoes before, it doesn't matter how you explain or show them forms to read, because they don't understand the process, they are not going to trust you. you need to find someone who really trust you, instead of just asking anybody. because you are wasting your time. Immigration is difficult alot of people know this and does mis-understand the process.

during the interview, your birth certificate is no longer needed, you should send her a certified copy of the divorce decrees, thats the only thing that is needed to be original from you. if you plan on leaving your financial docs with her then the only original needed is the I-134 because it requires your signature also for your financial, you can order tax transcripts for free to go along with your I-134.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresthings we can do now while waiting
generally police checks are valid for one year, birth certificates last forever, and affidavit of support should be the most recent as possible for the interview, you might need to send that to her. K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures1-134 co-sponsor and retirement income

This all seems a little bit confusing. So will my income not be counted at all? That doesn't seem to make any sense. I thought the point of a co-sponsor was to make up the difference for what the petitioner can't take care of himself/herself. Also, the K1 visa income requirement should be 100% of poverty from what I've read, as the 125% only applies to K3 visa applicants or immigrant visa applicants (since the K1 is technically classified as a non-immigrant visa). In this case, am I also counted as part of my grandfather's household, or not (since I'm not his dependent)? My grandmother is in assisted living, so she's technically a dependent. In this case would his total household size be counted as 3, then? (My grandfather, his wife and my fiance?) If that's the case, then his income is enough. Any clarification is much appreciated! Thanks!

if you came here to the states with intent to marry then you can marry now, go back home and file for CR1 if you had no intent to marry when you came here and suddenly fell in love and decided to marry, you can marry and file for adjustment of status which does not require you to go home. Reading your post it sounds like you knew your boyfriend prior to coming here, so I think Cr1 would be the better choice. Remember, keep it honest on the forms.
