Thank you so much for all the help. Yes it was so fast. I sent them an email last evening and today morning I found a reply already.

I am preparing for the interview and I will triple check everything.

You have to have the email from the Embassy stating that they have received your petition...you cannot schedule your medical without it. IOM will ask you for that email. Email the Embassy and ask them to confirm receipt of your file. Include your NRB case # in the subject line. Do not wait for them to email you first - it will take three weeks or more. Once they reply to your email (within two weeks they should reply), then you can schedule your medical and continue with the process. All the best to you and good luck with everything! :star: (F)

Thank you Ben and Jill. But God is so good and faithful. We received an email from the embassy today telling us that they received our file and the links to all the instructions and how to schedule an appointment.

I am so happy and nervous for the next step but I am trusting God to see us through this one.

Hello,

We received our NVC number last monday and they said our petition was on its way to the Nairobi Embassy. Do we wait for the embassy to contact us or do we just go ahead with everything else like scheduling the medical and interview date?

I think our petition got to Nairobi on Friday but I haven't heard anything yet. Do i wait for them or do i just go ahead?

Thanks everyone.

Africa: Sub-SaharanNairobi Embassy Thread!

My husband said he would if at ALL possible go in person to get the Police cert (not through the mail). He said when he went they took his photo and his fingerprints, and that he had to go back twice. This is what he did:

He went to Kibuli Police Station, and there they gave a bank slip. Then he went and paid around 50,000 UGX, then he went back with his receipt to Kibuli. Then they take finger prints, then they gave another receipt. Then they told him to go to Kololo Interpol after a week or four days (it depends).

So a week later, he went to Kololo, and he was given another bank slip which he went and paid again (around 50,000 UGX) and went back with his receipt, then they took his photo and told him to wait outside for an hour. Then they called him back, and issued his certificate.

Soooo...that's how he got it! Our lawyer said you could get it through the mail, but my husband says they had to take his photo to put on the certificate so he doesn't see how that process could happen through the mail. You could try the mail but it's much more certain if you go in person; that's what he did and he didn't have any problems.

Hope that helps~~ Just curious, what part of UG is your fiance from?

Thank you so much for your help. :) But i am the beneficiary..lol and my fiance is the American citizen. I am going to do it on Monday. God bless you.

My husband went for his interview in March, and he wasn't required to submit anything beforehand. The day of his interview he brought all the paperwork, and had his interview on the same day. I would plan on going the day of the interview with all your paperwork and having your interview that day. Keep in mind that everything you say once you enter the embassy can be used as part of the interview. The people you talk to before your formal interview will ask questions, and the final interview may follow up on anything you've said earlier.

Hello Beaulahluo,

There is something I want to ask that is related to the visa process since I see your fiance was from Uganda. How did you go about the police certificate? Someone just sent me a link and on the page, it says, we have to write to the CID, have fingerprints taken which will take about 2 weeks for that.. Did you also get your certificate from the CID headquarters here in Uganda?? Just want to start preparing before the interview.

Any information on this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Ann.

Hey everyone,

Thank you Ben and Jill, Katie and Sifa for the info you gave me about the vaccines. You guys are really lucky to be with your loved ones right now and I cannot wait for this part of the process to be over. The rest is not as hard when you are with your loved one.

Congratulations Mschana. Good luck to us all still in the hardest part of this process. I trust God to get us through this process to finally go and be with my husband to be. This is really not for the faint hearted. It even looks like the nairobi embassy was easier back then than it is right now...But I am trusting God to see me through just like he has brought me this far.

Thank you all again for keeping the thread alive for so many people to come. God bless you all. Will keep you updated and will come back here to get help from you guys.

On a different note, can i travel back after i get to the states and after i am married?? My sister will be getting married sometime towards the end of this year or early next year and I want to know if i have the option of attending her wedding because I would really love to.

Hello everyone,

We got our NOA2 last week on 21st June 2012, have been reading this thread for a couple of months and now i am preparing for the interview stage. A bit scared from some stories i have read but keeping my fingers crossed and praying for everything to go smoothly.

Getting together evidence of relationship, phone logs, chat logs, emails and anything else i can find. as I continue to read here. Also trying to get some vaccines done here. Is it a problem if i get my vaccines before i go for the medical in Nairobi? Will keep you posted. Meanwhile, I am reading and collecting info on what i will need for the interview as i wait for the NVC stage to be over.

Goodluck to us all and Thank you all for keeping the thread alive for us juniors and for those who will come. God bless.

Africa: Sub-SaharanNairobi Embassy Thread!
Hello Nairobi Embassy Thread,

My name is Ann and I just got to know about this about 2 weeks ago. I didn't know that a Nairobi thread existed before but I am so happy it does because it seems like the toughest embassy there is...

WOW! I have been reading this thread from the beginning and the emotion here is overwhelming, its like I was there with everyone every step of the way and it is awesome how you can feel so much for people on here. Thank you everyone for the support you have given each other and I hope, you guys can be there for me as well...

We filed our petition in January this year and are hoping for approval in mid June. So we have started looking at what we need for the next step that's why I ended up here and I must say,i'm officially scared. My heart is in my mouth literally with this whole process especially for this step coming up...I think we have all we need but i can't help but feel something is missing...

I don't think my fiance will be able to make it for the interview because he has work and school...I am really scared of the blonde woman and I hope she doesn't interview me at all...I must say, before everything was a bit easy if i may use that and there were more approvals back then compared to today...There are approvals but with more hoops to jump through...I guess I'm just scared and since my fiance wont be here, makes my nerves a wreck...I am looking forward to the NOA2. I know this is the only way we get to be together but I wonder why they have to make it so hard on people who love and care about each other :(

Anyway, i will keep you posted on my journey but for now, we are waiting, waiting and hoping and waiting that our NOA2 comes on time as we gather all the paperwork/documents we will need...this is a great thread and thank you all for helping each other out. God bless each one of you and God see me through and others yet to come on this stressful and emotional roller coaster ride. We all should keep trusting him and hoping for the best.

Glory to God for everyone who has made it through this journey and Good luck and God speed on our side for those of us who are atill in this journey and those yet to come.

National Visa Center (Dept of State)Preparation for Interview after I-129f petition NOA2 for Uganda
Hello,

I decided to create this topic/thread specifically for Ugandans who have applied for the I-129f petition and are at the NVC stage. Its been hard finding out what I need to do, where I need to go and since I have gone through it, I have decided to share it with all Ugandans on here and anyone who maybe stranded in the future and have no one to ask.

FOR A POLICE CERTIFICATE.

Before you get your police certificate, you need to do this...There are two places to go to for the process to be complete so that you can get your police certificate/Certificate of Good conduct like its called... From my experience this week,

I went and had my fingerprints taken at Naguru Police fingerprinting headquarters. To get to Naguru Police fingerprinting headquarters...I used a taxi, you can pick up one anywhere in town, make sure it is going to Nakawa, I was charged 500shs because I boarded from Jinja Road but if you board from anywhere, it will cost between 500shs-1000shs. Get out at Game/Shoprite Lugogo and pick a boda boda. The boda boda will charge you between 1500-2000shs, tell the man to take you to Naguru Police fingerprinting headquarters. The offices shifted from kibuli to Naguru, therefore you will be going to Naguru.
When you get there, talk to the person and tell them that you are there for a certificate of good conduct, you will be given a bankslip to go pay at the bank with the amount on it. When you get back from the bank, make sure you have with you, a photocopy of your passport, 2 passport size photos and the bank slip.

You will write an application letter and you will be told who to address it to and then afterwards, you will have your fingerprints taken. Then the the letter, photocopy, the photos and the fingerprint form will be attached together and you will hand in a copy of your bankslip (the pink one) and keep the blue one.

You will be required to hand in your forms and pay a fee of 3000shs. hand in the forms and you'll be told when to go for the next step. Usually takes 4 days. I went to Naguru on Monday and I was told to go to Kololo on Friday.
This is the end of the first part of this journey and the second part will come on what happens at Kololo

Thank you so much for that Advice you have been offering me. I was able to speak to one of the people in Immigrant visa section Nairobi and he told me that I keep on checking that there is no Available appointment dates at the moment.

But following the numerous emails i have been sending to the consulate regarding Visa appointment, today in the morning I received an email that if possible I select another Consulate which looked not clear to me!
Can the file be transferred from one embassy to another simply because there is any appointment date/ If possible which would be the best alternative I am a Ugandan and Kampala embassy doesn't issue Fiance Visa May be Dare salam Tanzania.

Please Advise me on what to do.

Africa: Sub-SaharanNairobi Embassy Thread!

So an update...Dan's visa was refused this morning based on "missing evidence." Ten years ago Dan lived in Kenya for about 9 months (less than a year). He did not have a police clearance from Kenya, and so his interviewer refused his visa application based on that, and on the fact that I am attending Harvard and she said, since he had not completed University that "there's no way an American would marry you."

The questions he was asked - these are only a few, he was bombarded with questions and demeaning comments:

What countries have you visited? he said Kenya. "Where is your police clearance for Kenya?"

Where does your fiance work, how old is she, how did we meet, how many times we've seen each other Where does she go to school, "American's don't get married to people that don't have degrees" "why would someone who decided to go to that school ever decide to marry you?"

She said, "I am not convinced of your relationship, how can you do that, how can you marry someone from Harvard"

She said she was "Not satisfied with the relationship."

The personality of the interviewer was brusque, demeaning, rushed, ridiculing.

I had provided 100+ pages of additional information including wedding dress receipts, deposit for wedding reception, daily conversation logs from the day we got engaged, emails, phone logs... everything was well organized and clearly marked but she looked at none of it. They examined our financial documents and then the harangue ensued. We had plenty of photos and she did not request more.

He went directly to the Kenyan police and filled out the paperwork...two more weeks until he can pick that up. He also visited Tanzania ten years ago (also for less than a year) who knows if they'll want that police clearance too although the form they gave him says only that he needs to provide a Kenyan police clearance.

He was interviewed by the infamous blond...I am devastated but trying to keep my chin up.

I am not sure if she was the same blonde haired interviewer who interviewed me back in 2010 but if she is thin, then she is the one. After witnessing people getting humiliated (one student with a paid for scholarship got denied on grounds that her English was bad for an american school, yet she could communicate well and other applicants told to get into schools in Kenya and south Africa) all I remember doing was being super confident and looked her straight in the eyes without any smile at all lest I gave her a chance to demean me.

She was really so judgmental without even hearing the story or looking at the evidence. People choose who to love and marry unconditionally.

Though it doesn't sound like you were denied, it seems like a request for further evidence.

To all those with upcoming interviews, all the best and just be confident and well prepare your evidence.

Also. She never filled out a DS-160, but it looks like it is now required. Did anyone else have to have that form?

Seems so much has changed and now people applying for non-immigrant visas in Uganda have to go through a new system: http://kampala.usemb..._31032011.html. By the time we went for the interview in Nairobi, we needn't have to complete DS-160 (or the old appt form), we just called the embassy immediately after knowing the labs results and the interview was scheduled within the same week. The website also says the visa fees are from a commercial bank in Nairobi but when we went there, they told us they don't receive fees for K-1 visas and we had no problem paying at the embassy prior to the interview.

Asaante for the Information! My fiancee had to fly back a couple of days in advance to interview for a job in NYC so i will be flying in alone later. I now understand what you guys are going through while waiting for your loved ones from overseas because we have been insaperable for the last one and 1/2 years.

About the missing documents, they called me 2 or 3 days after getting back to Uganda and I couldn't imagine travelling back to Nairobi from Kampala. We were lucky that we never flew immediately after the approval so we had so much time to figure out when the best would be to go back to Nairobi for the re-packaging. I did a same day flight and had my whole visa re-packaged.

I am soon re-uniting with my mama bunny and the POE is JFK though shall be proceeding to Houston hence was worried about the waiting time at JFK given that its the busiest airport and my connecting time is approximately 4 hours. I will still carry the X-ray but in the check-in bag, you never know at the AOS stage it might be required.

How is Jack liking the US? Btw, I went skiing at the beginning of this year, you should consider taking him, he will like it i guess.

All the best for the rest of the process.

The lady who interviewed us was so stern, we couldnt get her to crack a smile when we first came to the window for the interview even with both of us grinning like silly monkeys to make the whole process less nerve-wracking. But albeit the not smiling, in the end she was very nice and understanding about us coming from Kampala and told us the visa would be ready in the morning.

So don't worry too much, it'll all work out :)

Hey guys! Is the police certificate the certificate of good conduct? Jack lives in 2 different cities and we just wanted to be sure that the one certificate of good conduct would cover the whole requirement. They say it will take between 2-4 weeks to be ready... Does that sound about right? Thanks :)

Hi Annie,

The passport should have a picture of him already so no need for other photos. Just bring 2 passport size photos to the medical exam (and make sure it's the right size!). As for the police record, it does take quite awhile to get. We got ours from Interpol and it covers for all police record in Uganda, so didnt matter how many cities my fiance lived in (though he was in only one). Not sure how Kenya does it but check into it. If they dont do a country wide it might be best to get good conduct report for both city he is living in. Just to cover your bases.

All the best to you guys in this journey!

Sorry Annie, i misread your first question so here's the more appropriate response:

From our experience, not a long wait for the medical at all. You can't call to set up the medical, you have to email nbomed@iom.int with
(1) NVC case number
(2) fiance's name
(3) date of birth
(4) preferred date of medical exam
(5) and a copy of your fiance's passport (I also attached the NVC letter that had our case number)

They'll email a confirmation in about two days, if not give them a call.
Due to work conflicts, I think I emailed about 10days before the date we wanted. They were super accommodating and told us we were scheduled for the date we requested.

Africa: Sub-SaharanNairobi Embassy Thread!
From our experience, not a long wait for the interview at all as long as you have all the paperwork ready.

Also to further what HI-UG said, the Embassy people can definitely be very confusing.
In our case, my fiance had no health issues, so when we came back for the results the next day, they gave us a sealed envelope with whatever they put inside and said we were supposed to take that to the interview without breaking the seal. That's the only thing we brought to fulfill the medical part, and they didnt ask us for anything else.

Yes, you will have to bring the medical exam with you to your interview. You pick up your medical results the day after your exam.

Once you have the case number from NVC, you can schedule your medical exam (bc when you schedule they will ask for the case number). I'd suggest not doing the medicals and interview too far apart though, just bc it might be time sensitive and you dont want them requesting you to get another exam. I have not heard of this happening, but just to be sure ... :)
taatabunnyFemaleUganda2010-10-11 01:05:00
Africa: Sub-SaharanNairobi Embassy Thread!
Hi Annie,

When you receive a letter from NVC, give it another 1-2wks to reach Nairobi.
After that, you can call Nairobi to see if the package has reached. Call 254 20 363 6000, which is the general line, and DO NOT let them transfer you to immigration bc no one ever picks up that line. Be persistent if it happens bc i got transferred like 5 times before someone would listen. Also dont even bother emailing immigration like they advise bc they never returned my email except for an automatic reply. Just tell the first person you talk to that you can not reach the immigration office (and even tried emailing), but you have a case number for your K1 and you want to know if they have received your file so you can schedule for an interview.

As for scheduling the interview, we called on a Monday and asked for the earliest possible date (bc we were coming from Uganda) and they told us to come in Thursday that week, so dont worry. Just make sure you complete the medical exam and have all the necessary paper work together.

If no major issues arise, I dont see it being a problem for you guys to get through this by the end of the year. Best of luck!!

Well, "UG" (not her real name, she's not a cavewoman!) went over to the Nairobi Embassy bright and early the morning of the 5th, only to be told that her printout of the electronic visa form was missing a page, and that she had to go pay some fee at some bank, and then the bank said she had to pay it at the Embassy, and... well, by the time she finished running in circles, they didn't have time to interview her, so she'll be back first thing the morning of the 6th.

(It didn't take me much time to Google up an instructions page for fiancées which explained the whole bank fee thing, but since the Nairobi Embassy tried to MAIL the info packet to her in Uganda, which is a bad idea, and then she had to get a packet from the Kampala Embassy instead, there's the possibility that the packet she got was missing that instructional page, or something!)

Her flight back to Uganda is the 7th, so we need things to move quickly now that she's been delayed a day. :(

Sorry to hear that HI-UG! We actually went to the bank the day before the interview only to be told that we had to pay at the embassy. Before doing the finger printing, we paid $350 (though the receipt had $210, guess its the old fee) and then accomplished everything in the following couple of minutes.
I would advise you go to the embassy page: http://nairobi.usemb...sa-packets.html and crosscheck with the K1 packet to make sure you have every document they want and also, for the affidavit of support, it should be the original from you, not a faxed copy. Download the instructions from the same page too. On some form you dont have to sign, i guess its the DS-230, she will sign after taking the oath.

We got the visa the following day but we actually have to fly back to Nairobi bc our package is missing some documents and it has to be repacked. Its better you get it after a couple of days than having a package missing necessary documents identified at the POE.

Wish you all the best!!

Thank you for all of your congratulations. We are now back in Kampala and here's the full story:

Travel and Accommodation We took Queens bus (queenscoach.com) from Nakumatt Kampala at 715am on Sunday 26th of September. They are a new bus company with very very good services, we recommend them to anyone who has to make this journey by bus. We booked at the Kenya Youth Hostel, walking distance from the IOM Medical Offices. The hostel was fair with nice staff and somewhat clean facilities. Most importantly for us, it was a very convenient location to IOM.

Medical Exam We had to be at IOM at 730am on Monday morning, so we started walking from the hostel at 7am. It took us less than 10mins to get there and by the time we came the whole place was already crowded with many others waiting for the same exam. At around 8 they had a short counseling session. After counseling they called each person by name to do their blood tests, then xray, exam, then vaccinations. It definitely does take one whole day and the cost for us was $255 ($143 medical exam, $112 vaccinations). We got the results the following day without any problems.

Interview We called the Embassy to schedule an interview on the same day we got the Medical Exam. I had to be very persistent in order to speak with someone, but when I finally got through and told them our coming from Uganda they had no problem scheduling the interview for us the same week. Since it was the last Wednesday of the month we were scheduled for Thursday 7am. At around 730 we were called to turn in all the necessary paperwork. At 8 we were called for fingerprinting. Then at 845 we were called for the interview. I went up to the window with my fiance, but the consular lady told me I could go sit down. During the interview, they asked my fiance these questions:

(1)What is your fiancee's name?
(2) Are you married?
(3) How long have you known your fiancee?
(4) What does she do?
(5) What do you know about your fiancee?
(6) Have you been to the US? (bc my fiance has a visitor's VISA and had come to the US earlier this year to visit my family)
(7) How long were you there?
(8) Any photos of you and your fiancee?
(9) When did you propose?

It took about 10-15 mins, and seems like there are not so many K1 cases that go through Nairobi. We were probably one of two K cases that day. After these questions, she said she knows we were coming from Uganda and that they would try to get it to us by the following day. We were told to come back at 10am, which we did, and at around noon they had the visa ready for us. YAY!

One thing not clear to us is about vaccinations. We got what they told us, but they said my fiance would still have to get booster shots before leaving or at the port of entry. Any insight in this area for us?

Otherwise, we're just so happy to be done with this phase. For those who are still on this journey, please feel free to email us if you have any questions. Sometimes it was very unclear to us and if we can help make it clearer to any of you, we would be more than happy to help!

God bless!

Africa: Sub-SaharanNairobi Embassy Thread!
Hi All,

So i finally got through to the Embassy and this is what happened:

I called 020-3636492 as LNK2000 had suggested. Again no one picked up, so I called 020-3636000 which is the main line. I spoke nicely saying that I was a US citizen and have been trying to get through but with no luck, and that I have a case number for my K1 application. I think saying you have a case number is the key to getting information. Because almost immediately they said ok let us get you someone who can help. Seems the current method is once they have your case at the Embassy:

1. you collect all the necessary papers
2. fill out all the necessary forms listed on the Embassy website under K1
2. schedule the medical exam and have results in hand
3. then with all the above ready, schedule for the interview by calling the Embassy using the same numbers above (and she said the interviewed can be scheduled for the next day even for those not living in Nairobi and wanting to do it all at once)

It's so good to know at least what is expected of us to complete the process.
Thanks for everyone's help thus far, and hope this helps those who are embarking on this journey!

Thanks so much LNK2000!
I've been trying to call the Immigration office for the last week and no one seems to be answering the phone there. Let us try to call the number you suggested above again today and see what they say. We'll keep you all posted on our process.

Good luck to everyone on this journey as well!

Thanks, AnnieMugaya!

We're still waiting for the interview date but pretty sure that Nairobi should have our package from NVC by now (it was sent on the 30th of August reportedly). It's a bit confusing how the interview date is going to be assigned, some of you said you called and scheduled it yourselves once they got your package but seems now that is not how it works anymore ???? I called Nairobi but the people who know answers to my questions isnt picking up the phone...

Anyone who has recently gone through this process have any insight for us??

Thanks so much!

A visitors Visa has less than 50% chances compared to the K-1 visa with close to 99% approval rate. Taatabunny had high expectation of getting a visitor's visa since he had all the necessary documentation only to be denied but on re-applying after almost a year, this time with very low expectations, it was approved and he was able to meet my family.

Since our case left NVC for the embassy, we are soon getting onto the bus to Nairobi for the interview and medical check up, yayyy!!

The Nairobi thread has given us great insight of what happens in Nairobi, we appreciate all the contributors' efforts!

We are soon starting to put together our package and make bookings.

I Wish all those that are waiting the best of luck!

Cheers
